President’s Message

Although the calendar indicates that June is here, it is hard to believe that we are already almost halfway

through the year. Field Day is right around the corner and our chairman, Al KB2AYU is busy making final

preparations to help insure another successful event.

As if Field Day isn’t enough, there are several other events this month, with something happening almost

every weekend, making June a very busy month for our club.

Kicking things off is the Ham Cram License Class on June 3rd at the Clubhouse in Mullica Hill. Urb

W1UL has been working for the last few months to coordinate the volunteers and prepare the candidates

for the dual-session event. Occurring on the same weekend is the Museum Ships Weekend Event. The

event comprises nearly one hundred ships, one of which is the Battleship New Jersey callsign NJ2BB

(more information is available at www.nj2bb.org). Perhaps there will be an opportunity for a demonstra-

tion during the cram sessions.

The Wednesday following the Ham Cram is our regular monthly meeting at the Pfeiffer Community Cen-

ter in Williamstown. On Saturday at the cram, Urb will be inviting the Ham Cram attendees to the club

meeting, so look for several new faces and let’s all make an effort to welcome them to our club and the

hobby.

Another favorite among a growing number of club members is Tech Saturday. This month, Tech Saturday

has been postponed until July 8, 2017, because on June 10th, we will be having a work party to rebuild the

shed at our Clubhouse site.

And falling on the same weekend is the ARRL June VHF Contest. The contest runs from Saturday June

10, 18:00Z – Mon, June 12, 02:59Z.

Unless I have missed something, there are no major events planned for the club on the third weekend of

June. Father’s Day is Sunday June 18, making this a good weekend to relax and prepare for Field Day.

This month our Board of Directors Meeting on Wednesday, June 21 coincides with Summer Solstice; the

longest day of the year (with regard to daylight hours).

The fourth weekend of June is Field Day; need I say more? Okay, maybe a little more. HIHI

If you are interested in Field Day, but have not reached out to AL KB2AYU, I encourage you to do so as

soon as possible. There are plenty of things to do and that need doing; there is something for everyone.

If you don’t have an interest in Field Day I encourage you to reconsider. The ARRL has some good infor-

mation available on their website at: www.arrl.org/field-day. One particular statement from a PDF publi-

cation linked to their information page seems to do a good job at summing it up: “Field Day is a picnic, a

campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN!” Prior experience is not re-

quired; Field Day is an experience!

Our Section currently has 1,218 Full Members and 35 Associate Members

Thanks to everyone who became involved in the Gotham Shield Exercise and the accompanying COMEX

Drill. These events served to remind a great many governmental and non-governmental agencies of all that

Amateur Radio has to offer in a true emergency. Special thanks go out to Art N2CPR for running the Nets

related to these events.

Heading to the Hamvention? While there will be some nostalgic thoughts toward the Hara Arena, the new

Xenia, OH location looks like it will be quite a venue. I will be assisting at the ARRL EXPO in Building 2

throughout the event. Please stop by and say hello if you make the trip.

Field Day is just around the corner. I am looking forward, as always to visiting as many of the Section Sta-

tions as I can get to. Please keep me in the loop with your group plans.

Remember to keep September 10th open on your calendars for the New Jersey State ARRL Convention

being held as part of the Annual Gloucester County Hamfest this year on Sunday September 10th. It has

been a few years since we held a State Convention so this should be a great gathering.

Gloucester County Amateur Radio Club will be holding a W1UL Ham-Cram License Class on Saturday,

June 3, 2017 at the GCARC Clubhouse, adjacent to the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds, 235 Bridge-

ton Pike (Rt. 77), Mullica Hill, NJ 08062. Technician prep is scheduled for 8:00 AM with a VE testing

session being held at 11:30 AM. The General prep is scheduled for 12:30 PM with a VE testing session

being held at 5:30 PM. The VE test sessions are held immediately following the prep session while the

material is fresh in your mind. Both the prep sessions and the VE test sessions are open to anyone, not just

GCARC members.

Advanced registration is required due to limited space. Please contact Urb LeJeune W1UL at urb@ham-

cram.com or call Urb at 609-937-5487 to reserve your spot or if you have any questions. Additional in-

structions will follow listing material to be studied independently before June 3rd.

Sadly I must report that Joseph Arsenault WA2KDV, became a Silent Key this month on April 4th. Joe

was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and a former Gloucester County Amateur

Radio Club member.

Eyeball QSO - Część 2 (Part 2) By Jim Wright, N2GXJ

In the May Crosstalk, you may have noticed a simple article called “eyeball QSO”, and the

question “have you had any eyeball QSOs recently?” This month, I would like to give an up-

date.

About a month ago, I found out I was going to be traveling on business to Gdansk, Poland. Gdansk is lo-

cated in northern Poland, near the Baltic Sea. I’ve never been to Poland before, and don’t speak the lan-

guage. My Uncle didn’t help my anxiety over the trip either when he suggested I look out the window

when the plane landed to see if I could see the Russian fleet. Yes, the Russian border was going to be less

than 50 miles away.

That’s when I thought of amateur radio. Like you, I keep a log of my DX radio contacts. Surely, there’s a

contact or two that I’ve had with Poland, and perhaps with someone from this area? I’d had around 30

contacts with stations in Poland. Thanks to looking up addresses for a while on QRZ.com, I found one of

the hams I’d had contacts with from a few years ago was in the Gdansk area. And even better luck! There

was an email address listed with the entry. So, with nothing to lose, I set about sending an unsolicited

email. Who knew if I would get a reply?

Thank you for our contacts back when 10 meters was good! The reason for this email is

that finally I get to travel to Poland for business. I will be in Gdansk area week of May 8,

2017. It would be an honor to meet you in person after having had contact on radio! Just

The very next day, I got a positive reply, asking me to give info day before, and he might be able to meet

me, and perhaps welcome me to their small radio club, SP2KDS. Excellent! www.sp2kds.pl

Fast forward one month, to just a week ago. There I am, in Poland, having contacted Stan, SQ2NNN, and

now waiting in my hotel lobby. Sitting, in patient anticipation, waiting for someone I’d never met before,

in a city over 4,000 miles from my NJ home. In my hand was a copy of his 2011 eQSL card that I’d

brought with me from home, hoping he’d recognize it, and thus recognize me. A couple of visitors en-

tered, and went straight to the elevators, and then to their rooms. Then Stan entered. We shook hands and

laughed. I’d come a long way for a face-to-face QSO!

It was all good. Stan was great, and his English was very good, though he doesn’t get a chance to speak it

very often. It turns out he’s somewhat of an amateur radio contest enthusiast, and is fairly well known in

amateur radio circles in Poland.

He graciously offered to take me on a short drive to visit a place called Westerplatte. I agreed, and off we

went. Westerplatte is a former military area that is the site where, on September 1, 1939, German naval

forces attacked and began the invasion of Poland, which led Britain and France to declare was on Hitler’s

Nazi state in retaliation, starting World War II in Europe.

over the world. Stan’s amateur radio club has run a spe-

cial event station from here, on the anniversary of the

invasion. He tells me they’ve strung up antennas from

Later that evening, over dinner, we talked more about ham radio, our clubs, and other things until the sun

went down. And then he picked up the bill. I owe you Stan! Thank you for making me feel so welcome in

What an enjoyable once-in-a-lifetime experience. And to think, this would not have happened but for the

Meet Your Club Officers : From the March 1979 CrossTalk

Ray Martin WB2LNR - Club President 1979

Ray has been in Amateur Radio for the past 16 years. First licensed in 1963 as a novice. Ray has continued

to upgrade to the class of Advanced Class. Ray enjoys rag chewing, VHF and HF contesting. His main

interest is in the promotion of CW. Ray is always willing to make a sked with anyone to work some CW

on the bands. He first got interested in ham radio from listening to his grandfather's Philco Radio, on 40

and 80 meters. You can find Ray on just about any band, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6, and 2 Meters. If you hook

up with him, he will be on one of the many rigs that he has. Swan Cygnet 300B HF Transceiver, SB-200

Linear Amplifier, Clegg FM-DX VHF Transceiver, Drake TR-6 6 Meter Transceiver, Allied AX-190 Re-

ceiver, 440 Transceiver, Cooks ADT mobile phone. To add to the list Ray is getting a Teletype ASR-28

and a HAL ST-6 RTTY demodulator. That sounds like a very nice RTTY setup. Ray is a life member of

the ARRL and also is active in 78-18 Barnsboro, 66-06 Radnor, 265-865 Pine Hill repeaters. Ray also en-

joys hunting, gun collecting and SCUBA diving. When not an the radio, he puts some time in at Bell Tele-

phone, in the Operations Department in Voorhees, NJ. Ray's YL is Virginia (Ginny) and they are expect-

ing their first harmonic in April. Ginny is also studying for her ham license. Ginny did a very good job for

the club last year on the fundraising committee. We all hope the best for the new family.

Growing the Ranks vs. Growing the Enjoyment By Dan Romanchik, KB6NU

Because I teach amateur radio classes and publish a series of popular amateur

radio license study guides (www.kb6nu.com/study-guides), I often get

kudos for "growing the ranks." In fact, Gordon West, WB6NOA, told me

this just last week, when he stopped by the booth I was in at the Dayton

Hamvention. I’m paraphrasing a little, but after telling me that he’s heard

good things about my study guides, he said something like, “You’re doing

good work in helping get more people into ham radio.”

People say that as if this is - or should be - the ultimate goal of teaching a

license class. While this may be one of the goals, if that’s your primary

goal, I think that you’re barking up the wrong tree.

In a way, creating more hams is selfish. If there are more licensed amateur

radio operators, they say, then amateur radio will have more political clout

with the FCC and with Congress, making it easier to pass legislation like

the Amateur Radio Parity Act. While this may certainly help the new ham

down the line, its main thrust is to reduce restrictions on those who are cur-

rently hams.

My goal in teaching amateur radio classes isn’t to create more hams. Instead, my goal is to help more peo-

ple have fun with ham radio. The first step in helping people have fun with ham radio is, of course, help-

ing them get their license. I do that by publishing my study guides and teaching ham classes.

The next step, and I’m only really getting started on this right now, is to help people learn what they need

to know to become better ham radio operators. That’s why I got a little excited when I saw the article,

“Making a Good hobby Better Through Post-Licensing Enrichment” by Tim Busch, N0CKR in the lat-

est issue of Radio Waves, the ARRL’s email newsletter for amateur radio instructors.

In the article, Tim describes several activities that his club encourages, including a “new ham net” and the

Field Day GOTA station, but he also details a program of “mini classes” that will teach specific skills re-

lated to ham radio. These include:

Programming Radios and Getting on the Air

Soldering 101

Multimeter 101

Build and Use a Roll-Up J-Pole Antenna

Build and Use a Satellite Antenna

Foxhunts

Operating Digital Modes: IRLP, AllStar, D-Star, EchoLink, etc.

Tim writes, “Each class is intended to be no more than two hours at a sitting, so they can be held before a

monthly club meeting. The variety of subject matter allows many club members to get involved in leading

a topic. Materials kits are prepared in advance, so students walk away with practical items they can use at

home.”

I think this is a great set of classes, and I plan to try some of these in the fall. A couple of other topics that

occur to me are:

ARRL 101

RFI/TVI 101

Helping new hams—and old hams—have more fun with amateur radio is a lot more satisfying to me than

just “growing the ranks.” It would be nice to say that we have a million licensed radio amateurs in the

U.S., but I think it would be a lot more valuable to the hobby to say that a larger percentage of licensed

hams were active and enjoying ham radio. I know that, for me, increasing the number of active, engaged

hams would be more personally satisfying than simply creating a lot of new licensees.

Bike MS: City to Shore is an event sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Dela-

ware Valley Chapter designed to raise money for MS research and treatment programs for those affected

within the chapter. This event is the chapter's largest and generally brings in over $5 million every year.

Amateur Radio operators are needed to provide communications along the route at designated intersec-

tions, rest stops, and in certain support and staff vehicles. Usually about 100 hams are needed, but more is

always better. We had an excellent turnout in 2016, but still came up a little short of this goal, so everyone

who can help, even for just a few hours, is needed.

GCARC members have given overwhelming support over the years for this event.

SB QST ARL ARLB013 Important Notice - New MF and LF Bands are Not Yet Available to Use!

The new 630-meter and 2200-meter bands are not yet available for Amateur Radio use. The effective date

of the recent FCC Report and Order (R&O) granting these allocations has not yet been determined, and

until the start date has been set, it is not legal under an Amateur Radio license to transmit on either band.

The R&O can be found on the web in PDF format at:

https://apps.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-17-33A1.pdf.

The fact that the new rules contain a new information-collection requirement - notification of operation to

the United Telecoms Council (UTC) - complicates the matter of determining an effective date. According

to the FCC R&O, the Office of Management and Budget (under the Paperwork Reduction Act) must first

approve the information-collection requirements in Part 97.303(g)(2), which must be in place before radio

amateurs can use the new bands.

Once that happens, the FCC will publish a notice in The Federal Register "announcing such approval and

the relevant effective date."

ARRL will announce the UTC notification procedures and the effective date to use these new bands as

soon as these are known.

GCARC <at> Mailman <dot> QTH <dot> Net e-mail reflector guidelines 1. No attachments (e.g. pictures, files) are allowed on the reflector.

2. If you have Club-related pictures that you would like to share, you can send them to the webmaster, he

will put them on the website and he will send out a general e-mail to all the members.

3. Otherwise, the pictures will have to be sent to the members’ addresses.

4. URLs/Hyperlinks are acceptable on the reflector.

5. Do not send any messages with e-mail addresses in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field. The mes-

sage will be rejected. Use only the To: or CC: fields.

6. Members are subscribed to the reflector using the member's e-mail address from the roster database.

You must use that address when sending an e-mail via the reflector.

7. If you use another address on the reflector, the message will get rejected or "bounced", because the re-

flector does not recognize that address.

8. Whenever a message sent to reflector is rejected or "bounced" for various reasons, the administrator

has to log-in to the Mailman.QTH website and approve the message. If the admin recognizes the address

as belonging to a Club member, the message is accepted and passed on to the reflector.

FYI...If you use Comcast e-mail, you are limited to 100 addresses per message.
