Our September program greets spring with a blossoming of new courses. Our Dharma

program features a much-requested Shamatha Practice retreat weekend and the precious opportunity to formally enter the Buddhist path by taking Refuge with Geshe Tsultrim. The Chenrezig Institute community humbly offers the Refuge course freely. Also this month, we are blessed with a visit from internationally renowned Thangka painter Andy Weber, who will teach us about Tara’s mandalas. Our popular Wellbeing program is awash with choices for yoga, wellbeing and creative expression, with many new courses and workshops on offer. We warmly welcome you to come along and join in one of our courses or upcoming social events this month.

Meet our Sangha Chenrezig Institute is home to our resident teacher Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim and a community of ordained monks and nuns: the sangha. These spiritual friends have made the lifelong commitment hold the vows given by the Buddha. They generously help us all to understand the Buddha’s profound teachings. You can make an appointment with one of our sangha through reception. [email protected]

Welcome

Gubbi Gubbi

The Gubbi Gubbi people are the

traditional custodians of this land. We pay our respects to the Elders of the past,

present and future. They hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and

hopes for Aboriginal Australia. We remember that this land is, was and

always will be traditional Aboriginal land.

Thank you for your support Chenrezig Institute exists due to the kindness and generosity of our community . The Dharma itself is priceless, but running a Dharma centre involves many expenses, even with mostly volunteers. Facility Fees allow us to make offerings to our teachers and staff, pay the bills and maintain our infrastructure. But they should not be a barrier for anyone. Please contact [email protected] if you need to make arrangements to attend our courses.

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim (left) was specially chosen as our resident teacher by our Spiritual Director Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Buddhist Teachings

Venerable Thubten Damchoe enjoys welcoming new students with her trademark warmth and humour. She assures us there are no ‘silly questions’.

Venerable Lhagsam has over 15 years of experience working in palliative care. She combines her insight into Buddhist teachings with her experience of modern medicine.

Buddhism in a Nutshell with Ven Damchoe This course presents an introduction to the core principles and philosophy of Buddhism from the Tibetan Buddhist perspective. If you want a gentle introduction to Buddhist teachings, or have wondered about Buddhist beliefs, this course is a great start! In one day you will be introduced to the Buddha’s life and teachings. The course will explore what it means to be a Buddhist today and how this ancient philosophy can help you lead a happier, more peaceful life in modern times. Saturday 30 September 9.00am to 4.30pm, held in the Gompa at Chenrezig Institute. Facility fee $55

Anger, Patience and Forgiveness with Venerable Lhagsam Ksanti, which is translated as both ‘patience’ and ‘tolerance’, is the Buddhist art of being able to maintain a positive approach when things go wrong. It gives us the opportunity to choose beneficial reactions that are not driven by our usual compulsive mental habits of anger and jealousy, and helps us move towards forgiveness. It is one of the most essential skills we can learn to help us lead a happier, drama-free life. Saturday 2 September 9.00am to 4.00pm, held in the Gompa at Chenrezig Institute. Facility Fee $75.

Buddhist Teachings - Sponsored Course*

Refuge in the Three Jewels: becoming a Buddhist with Geshe Tsultrim Taking refuge is the first step on the Buddhist path to inner

freedom, but it is not something new. We have been taking

refuge all our lives: some in money, some in drugs; most of

us in a relationship. These may offer temporary relief but,

in sober truth, seeking refuge in physical possessions and

transient pleasures merely deepens our confusion rather

than ending it.

Buddhist refuge is a process of turning inward which begins

with our discovery of our own unlimited potential. This

generates tremendous energy for the development of our

own wisdom. Perhaps the word ‘Buddha’ conjures up a

remote and oriental image. But ‘Buddha’ is just a word, and

it means totally opened mind, an ‘opened lotus.’ When we

realise our human potential and arrive at this total

openness of mind, we become Buddhas.

Lama Thubten Yeshe, 1978

Join Geshe Tsultrim as he explains what it means to be a Buddhist and how to start the process of turning inwards by taking refuge in our own Buddha nature; the Dharma teachings; and our community, the sangha. A Refuge Ceremony will be conducted for those who have attended this preparatory course and are ready to make this meaningful commitment to enter the Buddhist Path, identifying Geshela as one of their teachers. If this is the first time you have taken Refuge please register via our website so that we can prepare the necessary materials for your Refuge Ceremony. Saturday 23 September 9.00am to Sunday 24 September 3.30 pm held in the Gompa at Chenrezig Institute. This course is freely offered by the Chenrezig Institute community when you register via www.chenrezig.com.au

*Meals and accommodation are available separately.

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim was born in Tibet in 1969. At 14 he became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He spent a further two years studying tantra at Gyume Tantric Monastery. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Geshe Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community.

Traditional Arts and Rituals

The Beautiful Mandala of Tara: A workshop with renowned Thangka artist Andy Weber This year Chenrezig Institute welcomes Andy Weber to share with us the beauty of Tara’s mandalas. We hope that you will join us for an inspirational art retreat in the welcoming and conducive environment at Chenrezig Institute. What Andy says about the Tara Mandala: (Tib: Droljang khyil.khor ) Born from the tears of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of compassion, Tara grants protection

and relief from suffering. According to the myth, Green Tara appeared to the right of Avalokitesvara as the principle of active compassion that overcomes obstacles. White Tara, whose devotional practices overcome illness and extends one’s life span, sat to his left side. Called the ‘mother of all Buddhas’, she promises assistance when called upon. The three outer rings (fire, vajras, petals) of her mandala protect the inner sanctuary, her palace and the practitioner. Viewing the mandala is regarded as a blessing. About the course: Andy will support you through the process of drawing the mandala by creating a peaceful and inspiring environment with the recitation of mantras and prayers. He'll provide hands-on tuition to help you draw the mandala and will share insights into painting techniques used to complete the works. Students of all levels are welcome and you do not need to have artistic talent or previous experience to join in this beautiful experience. Saturday 16 September 9.00am to Wednesday 20 September 5.00pm, held in the Art Studio at Chenrezig Institute. Facility fee $200 for the weekend, or $300 for the entire retreat. Please note that food and accommodation are available separately. After the course: Garrey, Krissie and Carolyn — our Art Studio team — will be on hand throughout the course to make sure you have everything you need. At the conclusion of the course you'll be welcome to join other artists who regularly use the space to complete your mandala, or join in with regular workshops on drawing, mantra rolling, stupa making, tsa tsa painting and sutra writing.

How To Change Habits: Turning Aspiration into Action with Corey Jackson It can be surprisingly hard to change our habits – even when we know it’s in our best interest. Unused running shoes, gym memberships, maybe a yoga mat or meditation cushion gathering dust might be evidence of this. It can equally be as hard to act on bigger issues that are important to us when we feel overwhelmed and incapable of making a difference. Join us for a one-day workshop that presents a modern psychological understanding of habits, combined with some ancient techniques we can use to gain control over them. Saturday 9 September 9.00am - 4.30pm at the Wellbeing Centre at Chenrezig Institute. Facility fee $75

Empowered Eating with Lou Coles What is your ‘go-to’ food for when you are feeling blue or stressed-out? Do you use food to make yourself feel better? The reason these diets don’t last long-term is because they overlook the missing link in the weight management puzzle - your mental and emotional wellbeing. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to look a little deeper into your relationship with food and learn the tools to release your cravings and let-go of your reliance on food as a temporary fix. This is an opportunity to let go of unhealthy cravings and create healthy habits that will stick. Sunday 10 September 9.00am - 3.30pm at the Wellbeing Centre at Chenrezig Institute. Facility fee $75

Return to Stillness: Yin Yoga with Annie McGhee

Yin yoga is a perfect counterbalance to our busy lives. It allows us to drop into ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’ by holding poses longer and passively. Yin practice is deeply nourishing and has myriad benefits for both body and mind.

Yin sequences improve the flow of energy into the internal organs and tissues around the joints where it may have become stagnant. Through the practice of Yin yoga, we can successfully combine both asanas and meditation into a deeply transformative practice. Friday 15 September 6.30pm – Saturday 16 September 4.30 pm, at the Wellbeing Centre. Facility fee $75.

Yantra Yoga with Emily Choeling

Each yoga sequence performed in Yantra Yoga aims to guide the breath into natural harmony with mind and body. Synchronizing every movement with conscious breathing we find ourselves in a perfectly relaxed state.

Yantra Yoga was first introduced to the West in the 1970s by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, one of the foremost Dzogchen masters of our time who wanted to share its immense benefits.

In this day-course you will learn: The Nine Breathings — LungSang, to purify prana Loosening the Joints — Tsigjong The Eight Movements

Sunday 17 September 10.00am - 4.00pm in the Wellbeing Centre at Chenrezig Institute. Facility Fee is $75.

Creativity to Replenish Ourselves with Juliette Kalifa We live in a busy world where we take little time to pause or reflect. I invite you to spend the day with me using arts as therapy. Art therapy differs from traditional art in that the emphasis is on the process of creating rather than on the end product. No experience with arts is necessary. Create the space and take the day to follow your heart spontaneously with colours, shapes and images, you may find another way to express how your life is, and consider other possibilities.

Animals at Chenrezig Institute

Benefiting animals at Chenrezig

Institute We love having animal day visitors here at Chenrezig Institute and recently we’ve been thinking of ways we can make them feel more welcome. You may have noticed our new dog water bowls, bird baths and bird feeders around the grounds.

We’ve been looking after our native wildlife too, as we plant new varieties of native plants to support bird and butterfly populations - including the rare Birdwing Butterfly that is native to our property. Pictured here are some recent visitors to our nuns community. German Shepherd Maya is enjoying listening to the Sanghata Sutra recitation and our neighbourhood cat Gustav joined Ven. Kartson for several sessions of our Lama Tsongkhapa Retreat. If you are looking for practices to benefit your pet or other animals there are a variety of resources in our shop from FPMT. May all animals experience perfect peace.
