LAST TIME WE MET - Mercyhurst at Gannon - October 1, 2016Running back Richie Sanders had three total touchdowns -- running in two and throwing for another -- and kicker Dylan Kondis connected on a 39-yard game-winning field goal as the Lakers claimed a 38-35 overtime victory at cross-town rival Gannon.

Sanders rushed 22 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a 69-yard touchdown pass on a trick play in the back-and-forth battle, but it was Kondis’ kick in overtime which sealed the win for the Lakers. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Jakob Plonski terrorized the Golden Knight backfield, recording 4 1/2 tackles-for-loss, including 3 1/2 sacks.

Quarterback Doug Altavilla finished 16 of 24 for 144 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. His top target was tight end Bryce Mostoller, who totaled five catches for 20 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Brad Novak had four grabs for 111 yards and one TD as he caught the pass from Sanders. Wide receiver Zach Smith also had a touchdown reception.

Defensive back Dorian Stevens led the defense in total tackles, ending with 10. Plonski and defensive backs Akeel Marsh and Rocky Owens had nine apiece. Defensive lineman Benji Abercrombie had 1 1/2 tackles-for-loss and fellow DL Austin Brooks tacked on a half-sack.

The teams traded blows for the majority of the contest. Gannon took a 7-0 lead on the first of three rushing touchdowns by running back Tyler Johnson.

Mercyhurst then answered with three consecutive touchdowns -- a 23-yard pass from Altavilla to Smith, a 1-yard run by Sanders and a 5-yard hookup from Altavilla to Mostoller -- and took a 21-7 lead into halftime.

The Knights pushed across touchdowns on their first two drives of the second half as quarterback Zach Phillips throw a 47-yard TD pass to running back Nico Law. A 12-yard run to paydirt by Johnson helped the hosts even the score at 21-21 late in the fourth quarter.

Momentum swung between the teams in the fourth quarter -- first, on the side of Gannon, when defensive back Foster Reznor intercepted an Altavilla pass at the GU 2-yard-line to eliminate a Mercyhurst scoring threat.

The next time Mercyhurst had the football, Sanders scored on a 46-yard touchdown run. Gannon answered on its next drive when Phillips threw a 30-yard TD pass to tight end Will Davis, evening the score at 28-28.

Then, on MU’s next possession, Sanders took a pitch and threw a 69-yard scoring strike to Novak down the sideline as the Lakers took the lead with 2:37. But, once again, GU responded and eventually pushed in a 1-yard Johnson run into the end zone.

Another Altavilla interception ended regulation as Gannon defensive back A.J. Satcher was thwarted on his return effort, sending the game into overtime.

The Lakers won the coin toss in overtime and elected to defend first. A sack by Plonski during Gannon’s possession forced the host Knights into missing a 47-yard field goal. Then, after the Mercyhurst offense gained three yards on three plays, Kondis converted the game-winner.

Johnson had 21 carries for 140 yards for the Golden Knights while Phillips had a 18-for-26 game with 228 yards. Wide receiver Quad Law added seven receptions for 67 yards and Nico Law made three grabs for 61.

For the GU defense, defensive back Christian Carpenter had 13 total tackles and linebacker Anthony Howard totaled 11 tackles.

Gannon at Mercyhurst - Sept. 30, 2017LAKERS’ LAST TIME OUT - Mercyhurst at Clarion - Sept. 23, 2017Good things came in twos for the Mercyhurst football team -- quarterback Doug Altavilla threw two touchdown passes, linebacker Kaz Struna had two sacks and defensive back Emmanuel McDowell made two interceptions -- as the Lakers defeated Clarion, 21-18, in PSAC West action.

Mercyhurst never trailed, but needed a late stop to hold on to victory. McDowell finished off the host Golden Eagles with an interception at the Mercyhurst 5-yard-line. The Laker offense then kneeled down three times.

After recording only two sacks through its first three games, the Laker defense had a strong outing with six quarterback takedowns. Struna’s two sacks led the way; he finished with three tackles-for-loss and 10 total tackles.

Also for the MU defense, linebacker Alex Zacharyasz totaled 12 tackles and a half-sack. Linebacker Corbin Kessler added eight tackles, including one sack, while fellow LB Joseph Scro made eight total stops.

Linebacker Chris Peluso and defensive lineman Austin Brooks added sacks. Lineman Andrew Welton was credited with a half-sack.

On offense, Altavilla completed 20 of 31 throws for 224 yards. Running back Garrett Owens rushed five times for 76 yards and one touchdown. Fullback Theophilus Blackston III had a TD reception while the Lakers’ top two receivers were Brad Novak, who had four catches for 95 yards and one TD, and Zach Smith, who made four grabs for 67 yards.

Mercyhurst opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 7-yard TD pass from Altavilla to Blackston. That play finished off a short field for the Lakers, who had started their drive at the Clarion 40. Altavilla was 4 of 4 for 31 yards on the drive.

The Eagles answered in the second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Asiantii Woulard, completing a 16-play, 80-yard drive.

Each team had an opportunity late in the second quarter to score, but CU was intercepted by McDowell and the Lakers ran out of time with the ball at the Eagles’ 1-yard-line.

Mercyhurst took the lead for good in the third quarter. A quick three-play drive -- highlighted by two passes to Novak -- helped the visitors to a 14-7 advantage. Altavilla found Novak for 37 yards and then 19 for the score.

A 38-yard field goal by Clarion kicker James Metzger cut the Laker lead to 14-10. Then, for the second straight week, came a momentous run by Laker running back Garrett Owens.

After a 38-yard hookup from Altavilla to Novak, and then an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Owens broke off a 70-yard TD run for the Lakers, helping push the lead to 21-10.

Clarion closed its deficit to three points on a TD and two-point conversion. On the touchdown Woulard connected with wide receiver Greg Leonard on a 39-yard pass.

After a Mercyhurst punt, the Eagles had one final attempt to tie or take the lead, but McDowell snuffed it out with his pick.

STRUNA PSAC-W PLAYER OF THE WEEKMercyhurst linebacker Kaz Struna was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.

Struna, a redshirt-junior linebacker, set the tone with sacks on each of Clarion’s first two drives in a game that Mercyhurst never trailed. The Mentor Lake Catholic product also had a third tackle-for-loss, two tackles on special teams and a third-down QB hurry.

McDOWELL ALSO IN THE RUNNINGDefensive back Emmanuel McDowell could also stake a claim in the running for PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week honors.

A junior from York Suburban, McDowell recorded two interceptions during Mercyhurst’s 21-18 win at Clarion. His picks came near the end of each half; his second INT sealed the victory for MU.

McDowell became the first Laker with two interceptions in one game since Dorian Stevens had two picks in a 38-28 win against Edinboro on Oct. 22, 2015.

The 2015 season included a total of four two-interception games: Stevens, Joe Dever (W, 20-14, Bloomsburg, Sept. 19); Tevin Stewart (L, 13-16, Gannon, Oct. 10); and Stewart (W, 35-20, Bentley, Sept. 5).

SACK ATTACKMercyhurst’s defense went without a sack in its first two games, which were played at home. When the Lakers took to the road, they recorded two sacks against East Stroudsburg.

The following week, Mercyhurst tallied six quarterback takedowns -- the highest total by a Laker team since MU had six sacks in a 49-7 home win against Millersville on Sept. 14, 2013.

The last time that the Lakers had six sacks on the road was the previous year during a 45-7 victory at Millersville (Sept. 8, 2012).

HOME, NOT SO SWEET, HOMEThe Niagara Cup rivalry has not been kind to teams playing on their home campus. The last winning team on its own campus was Gannon in 2010, when it claimed a 14-10 victory.

The Lakers’ last win at Tullio Field against Gannon was a 27-17 triumph on Oct. 10, 2009.

ABOUT TULLIO FIELD...The Lakers started their 2017 campaign with two home losses, which they followed up with two home wins. That means MU is still in search of its first home win of the season.

Mercyhurst’s last home win came in its season finale of 2016, when it bested Lock Haven, 49-14. That was the Lakers’ only home win of the year.

MU’s last home victory in PSAC play was a 41-13 win against Seton Hill on Oct. 31, 2015.

FOURTH AND OWENSLaker running back Garrett Owens was named PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week after his week three performance. He led the Lakers to a 25-20 victory at East Stroudsburg.

The redshirt-freshman from North East, Pa., had 16 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns against ESU, but what was even more impressive was his fourth-quarter output that alone eclipsed the century mark: he had 13 runs for 120 yards and both of his scores.

The fourth quarter has been feasting time thus far for Owens:

Quarters 1-3: 14 carries, 49 yardsQuarter 4: 19 carries, 215 yards, 3 TDs

MOST 4Q POINTS SINCE...MU’s 19-point fourth quarter in its 25-20 win over East Stroudsburg was its most fruitful final period since a 21-point effort on Nov. 8, 2014, when the Lakers claimed a 59-49 home victory against California (Pa.).

MOST 2H POINTS SINCE...The Lakers had 25 points in their comeback win against East Stroudsburg last week. That was their most productive second half since they accumulated 38 points in a 55-45 defeat at Seton Hill on Oct. 22, 2016.
