annual report2017 2018

Dear WES Community,

The 2017-2018 school year was a successful year for WES. We welcomed 60 new students, completed the writing of a new Strategic Plan, implemented the new STEM rotation, created a common lunch environment for Grades 2-5, renovated the playground, refinished our gym floors, and upgraded all of our gym lighting to LED.

These and many other accomplishments were made possible because of the amazing community that generously supports us. Their commitment ensures that the school stays strong.

This Annual Report recognizes and celebrates those who have given time, treasure, and talent to our school. Your investment in our school directly supports the incredible faculty, and enriches the experience of all of our Dragons.

The 2017-2018 Annual Giving Campaign raised a total of $413,000 all of which was used in the operating budget and to support student learning. Nearly 98% of our parent body and 100% of our faculty and staff donated to the Annual Giving Campaign this year. For the second year in a row, our Annual Giving Campaign was led by WES parents Alison and Jonathan Dickey. I want to express my gratitude to Alison and Jonathan, the 27 members of the their committee, and all of those who donated so graciously.

On March 2, the annual Auction Gala, There’s No Place Like WES—An Evening in Oz, was a remarkable success. Co-Chairs Nicole Miller, Sandy Vogelman and their creative Auction Committee threw the party of the year while raising $233,000 in net proceeds. The Raise Your Paddle appeal brought in a record $162,700 (included in the net amount) that was used to renovate our playground spaces.

I want to extend my appreciation to the Board of Trustees and in particular Frank Knott for serving as Board of Trustees Chair. He has done an outstanding job. We welcome Les Carnegie as the school’s eleventh Board of Trustees Chair in the coming year.

The cumulative effort of the community’s generosity allowed us to offer the kind of education that our founders envisioned – one that ensures that academic excellence and happy children belong together. You are making a true and lasting difference in the lives of these young people, and we are deeply grateful.

Sincerely,

Danny VogelmanHead of School

report from theboard chair

Greetings WES Community,

What a remarkable year! During the 2017-2018 school year WES continued to thrive with the enhancement of its administrative leadership, the generous support of our community, and the dedication of our faculty, staff, and volunteers. Thanks to the tenacity of Jonathan and Alison Dickey, our Annual Giving campaign raised over $413,000 with exceptionally high levels of participation from all constituencies. With equal resolve, Nicole Miller and Sandy Vogelman led the incredibly successful Auction Gala, There’s No Place Like WES—An Evening in Oz, raising over $233,000. While these events and efforts are critical to the fiscal aspects of WES, they more importantly demonstrate the commitment of the entire WES community to our shared mission and values. I cannot thank our faculty and staff, volunteers, attendees and donors enough for your continued support of these vital WES functions.

While the results of development efforts do reflect the dedication and creativity of their leaders, they also demonstrate a widespread community belief in WES’s overall direction and leadership. During Danny Vogelman’s tenure as Head of School, the Board has continued to see growth in the faculty and staff, new and enhanced academic programs and, most importantly, a community belief in Danny’s vision for the best Episcopal-based education experience and its implementation. It was with this in mind that at the beginning of the academic year, the Board and Danny mutually extended his term through the 2024-2025 academic year. The stability offered to WES with Danny at the helm will promote and buttress the endearing qualities and aspects of the educational experience afforded our students.

Although energetic teaching and visionary leadership create the public face of a successful independent school, behind the scenes, fiscal prudence provides an equally-important barometer of success. During this past year, WES’s investment portfolio and fiscal management have continued to shine due to Kelly Nelson’s and Anastasia Gekis (Piris)s’ leadership of our Finance Committee and Investment Committee, respectively. Their efforts, along with those of the parent volunteers who serve on these committees, provide WES with an unparalleled level of financial expertise, invaluably assisting the Board in its financial planning function.

Among the Board’s long-term planning responsibilities is the crafting and implementation of multi-year strategic plans to guide, enhance, and further develop the WES experience. This spring, the Board approved a 5-year strategic plan which will empower, enrich, and elevate WES for the future. I am grateful to Stacie DeRamus for chairing the Strategic Planning Committee and for all of the diligent work performed by the host of trustee, parent, faculty and staff, and administrative members of the Committee.

As the needs of an independent school continually evolve, so too must its core stewards, the Board. During the past several years, the Board has recruited additional parent and non-parent members with specific areas of expertise required for WES’s continued development as a leading Episcopal day school. I am more enthusiastic about the Board’s composition than at any time during my seven years of service. As a collective, and particularly under the leadership of Les Carnegie, WES will continue to be well-represented by exceptional people with unique skills relevant to WES’s needs and mission—all focused on the education of our children.

As I retire from the Board, I want to thank the entire WES community for your support during my tenure. Whether you’re a past or present student, parent, grandparent, member of the faculty and staff, trustee or WES supporter, you have made WES an inclusive, comprehensive, and supportive community that provides our students with an environment in which to thrive and grow. On behalf of the Board, please accept my thanks and gratitude for your past and continued support.

Sincerely,

Head of SchoolDanny Vogelman

ANNuAL GIVING By Class thAnk YouWES Faculty and Staff100% ANNuAL GIVING!

WhyI GIVE

When recently asked why I give to WES, I realized I had never given it much thought. I have consistently given to our school since graduating in

1998 – originally through my parents and then directly – but it wasn’t until now that I considered why. Thinking about it, I can justify my giving for many reasons: the school has always supported me, the teachers and aca-demics at WES are fantastic, I enjoyed my time as a student, because it is the right thing to do, and so on.

However, the real reason is that I wouldn’t be where I am today without Washington Episcopal School and for that I will be eternally grateful. Grow-ing up, my mother used to always say, “How can you excel in Calculus without first understanding why 2+2=4?” She always insisted that to succeed, you needed to have a strong founda-tion to build upon. WES provided me that foundation and I have been able to grow and move forward through school and my career thanks to that foundation. I want others to have the same opportunity to build a strong and enduring foundation; this is why I give to WES.

I enthusiastically support WES because I have seen what a WES education has done for my three grandchildren, all of whom are very different from each other. At WES, each student is recognized as an individual with his or her own approach to learning and social in-teraction. WES students know that their school work will be highly valued; their intellectual curiosity will be nurtured and stimulated at all grade levels; and what they learn at WES will reinforce the skills and tools students need to becoming life-long, active, engaged learners.

WhyI GIVE

I have been lucky to experience WES not only as a parent, but also as a staff member. I was so impressed from the start by the enthusiasm of the admission staff and faculty members that I met when my children applied to WES. The school had such a feel-ing of community that it was much more than just a place to learn and grow. Now, my children are juniors in college. Each day I see firsthand the dedication of all the faculty and staff to make WES the best it can be. To witness this commitment makes me proud to support WES.

WhyI GIVE

Both of our sons have thrived at WES and have been able to explore so many interests - from history to the sixth-grade musical to team sports and band. We feel that our eldest son, a high school sopho-more, was well-prepared by WES. This strong foundation has given him the confidence and indepen-dence to embrace new opportunities and experiences. We make WES a philanthropic priority to ensure that WES continues its outstanding program for all students.

Michele Sumilas (Carney), Parent of a WES student and graduate

Kind. Confident. Prepared.

It was a remarkable year, thanks to our donors and volunteers who make projects such as our playground renovation possible.
