Welcome
Mossbank School is an integral part of our local community and our
Wraparound care facility supports parents from the locality and
beyond. This booklet is to help you find out what childcare and
Nursery education our school offers. We provide care for children
aged 2-5 years from 8.30 am. – 5 pm. This includes a morning Nursery
session for registered children.
We aim to offer a welcoming and stimulating learning environment
where children’s needs are paramount. The staff firmly believe that it
is important to build strong, positive and open relationships between
home and child care. We feel this is the most successful way to help
each child develop to the best of their ability.
Starting at Mossbank
Nursery places are available following the child’s 3rd birthday. When a
child is registered for a Nursery place an indication of the start date
will be given, which will be confirmed later.
Many parents choose to combine a place at Daycare with their Nursery
session, as other children come just for Daycare. Parents are
encouraged to visit our setting to familiarise their child and we
welcome parents to support their child during the settling in period, if
necessary.
Nursery sessions follow the school term dates. Daycare is open for 50
weeks a year, being closed over the Christmas period. There are some
days, of which you will be notified, when Daycare is closed for staff
training.

There is a security system in place in the school. To be admitted within
school times please press the button situated inside the front door and
wait for admission.
If possible, we would prefer that a Parent or a child’s main guardian
accompany and collect their child to and from Nursery and Daycare,
however if there is to be someone else collecting your child you must
inform staff. Anyone collecting a child should be over 16 years of age.
Children and accompanying adults should come into school through the
gate and not through the car park.
Daycare
At Mossbank Daycare we provide care for children from 2 – 5 years
from 8:30 - 5:00pm. The Breakfast club in school takes children from
age 3 at 7:30am and any children needing care after 5pm could also be
booked into KidZone. A separate registration is needed for this.
Snacks are provided three times a day and parents are asked for
donations of food, fruit or money to help contribute to a healthy snack.
Parents are asked to book children into Daycare 24 hours in advance as
we cannot guarantee a place at short notice. Details of current fees
are in the Appendix.
A rest/quiet time is planned for after lunch but children may rest
whenever they need to. Comforters are usually kept in the children’s
boxes and there use is generally discouraged throughout Nursery time.
We follow the ‘Pre-birth to Three National Guidance’ and the
‘Curriculum for Excellence for children aged 3-5 years’. Daycare staff
work with the children and follow child led planning together to provide
play opportunities through which children learn and are cared for. A
record of the two year olds chosen activities and their personal daily
routine is kept and copied for parents. All Daycare children have a file

for parents to look at which includes photos, observations and evidence
of their activities. ‘Take a Look Books’ are sent home termly. This
gives a pictorial record of activities to share at home. Parents are
encouraged to make comments and sign before returning them.
Nursery Morning
If possible, we would prefer that a Parent/s or a child’s main guardian
accompany and collect their child to and from Nursery, however if
there is to be someone else collecting your child you must inform the
Nursery. In addition, anyone collecting a child should be over 16 years
of age.
Children from age 3 are offered a 3 hour and ten minutes Nursery
session every morning from 9:00am – 12.10pm. A Nursery teacher is in
the Nursery for two sessions a week and works with staff to provide a
stimulating learning environment based on the Curriculum for
Excellence. Children are encouraged to learn by doing and we promote
active participation. Nursery staff follow the child led planning
together to provide play opportunities through which children learn and
are cared for.

The weekly timetable and a record of the previous day’s activities are
displayed on the parents notice board. As well as planning for the
class, individual targets are set and reviewed by the staff in the
Nursery and sent home termly. Observations are made by all staff and
kept in ‘Personal Learning Plans’. Our ‘Personal Learning Plans’ and ‘Take
a Look Books’ provide regular insights into progress. At the end of the
Nursery year an opportunity is provided with the Teacher to disscuss
your childs progress in the areas of the Curriculun for Excellence.
We have regular Open Mornings when parents and other family
members are invited to spend time seeing what we do and meeting with
staff. Often these are combined with a charity fund raising event.
We also frequently produce a newsletter called ‘Nursery and Daycare
Notes’.
The Nursery Curriculum is divided into 5 areas:
Literacy and English
Children are encouraged to listen to stories, talk about their
experiences, develop early writing, including correct letter formation
of their name and to look at and share books.
Numeracy and Mathematics
Children learn numbers through singing counting songs and through
active participation in structured and free play activities.
Health and Wellbeing
By learning about healthy lifestyles children are active, environmentally
friendly and aware of their own and the needs of others.
Expressive Arts
Children are encouraged and taught to express themselves through
Art, Dance, Drama and Music.
Social subjects, Sciences, Technologies and RME
By earning about the world around them children are able to
understand how the world works and their place in it.

Transition
During the second half of the school year we introduce a transition
programme for children moving to Primary One. This helps children to
understand the routines and curriculum of their new class and is
supported by Nursery and school staff.
Attendance during Nursery sessions
Children should attend Nursery on a regular basis so that they can
benefit most from the place allocated to them. All children benefit
from a regular routine. If your child is going to be absent from
Nursery then you must inform the Nursery.
Parents should ensure that the Nursery has an up to date emergency
contact phone number in case there is a problem and you are
unavailable.
General Information
Policies and documents are available for all parents to access in the
Nursery and Daycare.
We are inspected regularly by the Care Inspectorate and adhere to the
Care Inspectorate Standards.
Child protection
Under local authority procedures, staff are obliged to pass on any
information received regarding children in our care to the appropriate
agency. All staff are trained in child protection procedures. A copy of
the ‘Shetland Inter-agency Child Protection Procedures’ is held in the
Nursery office.
Childsmile
The Nursery and Day care take part in the “Childsmile” tooth brushing
scheme. Permission Forms can be signed at enrolment.

Medicines and 48 hours notice
If your child is having medicine or has a medical condition, please
inform us, as staff need to be aware of this. A form, available from
staff, must be filled in if a child requires medication within Nursery,
e.g. inhaler.
Children suffering from sickness and diarrhea should remain at home
until fully recovered. It is policy that children should not return to the
Nursery until 48 hours after symptoms have ceased. This advice is
offered to alleviate unnecessary distress and prevent further spread
of infection.
Clothing
Children will engage in active learning, so in order to feel free to
participate in all activities, it is preferable if children wear suitable
clothing. Aprons are supplied for messy play and baking activities.
Clothes that are easy to get on and off are best. Please put names on
your children’s clothing. We have outdoor suits for use in inclement
weather but children should come with a jacket at all times. Please
provide a sunhat for sunny days and apply sun protection.
Comforters
Please discourage your child, as far as possible, from bringing toys from
home. There is a box outside the Nursery for any that do make their
way to school. There are named pigeonholes for children and parents to
place items. Children have their own boxes in Nursery & Daycare where
spare clothes, nappies, wipes etc. can be stored.
Parents Area
We have a seating area available to parents directly outside the
Nursery & Daycare door. Parents can also use Room 1 across the area
if they require during the settling in period. There is also a selection of
toys for children to play with if waiting with Parents. The Health

Visitor can arrange meetings with parents in the school medical room or
room 1 as well as other visiting agencies.
Room 1 is available to give children a quiet time and for a change of
environment.
Book bug and story pack
At some time during the year a story pack loan system where children
can borrow packs on a weekly basis will be available. We may also have
Bookbug sessions where parents can also take part in a short singing
and story session each week. This encourages their interest in books,
singing Nursery rhymes with them, and by helping them to notice
numbers and mathematical language in the environment.
Trips
Parents will be informed of details of all trips and Daycare parents will
need to sign to give permission. A small donation towards trips may be
required.
Severe weather
In the event of severe weather, parents will be contacted if the school
is not opening or if the weather deteriorates during the day.
Complaints Procedure
Should you have any concerns regarding the Nursery, please speak with
the staff. If you feel the matter needs further discussion, please do
not hesitate to contact the Head teacher and Wraparound Care
manager, Mrs J. Nisbet.
Any matter will be discussed in confidence and your concerns given due
consideration. Any complaints will be dealt with within 2 weeks of
receipt.

parents are asked to pay 50p per snack. We ask for a donation for
Daycare. The weekly snack menu is displayed on the parents notice. As
we have no other source of income to supply snacks, we are solely
dependent on this weekly donation. Lunch money is collected on Fridays
and costs £2.20 per day.
Handwriting formation
Children are taught the correct formation of lower case letters in
Nursery. Capital letters are used only for the initial letter of your
child’s name. The starting place for each of the letters is important
when children learn the correct formation. An example of the letters
are attached.
