SKERRYHead CoachHead Coach7th Season • Tufts, ‘927th Season • Tufts, ‘92 When Pat Skerry was announced as the 13th men’s basketball head coach at Towson University on April 5, 2011, he took over a program that had endured 15-straight losing seasons. The gritty Medford, Massachusetts native has revitalized the Towson men’s basketball program, leading the Tigers to consistent success in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Towson enters the 2017-18 season having won 20 games in consecutive games. It’s the fi rst time as a Division I program and the second in school history that Towson has won 20 games in consecutive seasons. Overall, Towson has won at least 20 games in three of the last four years under Skerry. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Towson leads the CAA with most conference victories at 53. The Tigers have participated in a postseason tournament in two of the last four years, including the Vegas 16 in 2016. Skerry was the recipient of the 2017 Gene Bartow award, which recognizes outstanding achievement and contributions to the game. After winning just one game during his fi rst season, Skerry led the Tigers to an 18-13 record in 2012-13. Not only was it the fi rst winning season since 1995-96, it was also the largest single-season turnaround in NCAA Division I history. The achievement did not go unrecognized by his peers as Skerry was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year. He became the fi rst coach to receive that honor since Terry Truax earned back-to-back Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1992-93 and 1993-94. The success continued during the 2013-14 season as the Tigers won a Division I record 25 games. This includes winning their fi rst two postseason games as a Division I program in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The 2013-14 season saw the Tigers end the year ranked 84th in the RPI, marking the fi rst time Towson fi nished the season in the Top 100. The Tigers also received their fi rst votes in the national polls when they were receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The successful season was made even more special with the opening of SECU Arena. The Tigers opened the building with a 72-45 victory over Navy on Nov. 8 in front an arena-record crowd of 4,262. Less than one week later, Towson defeated Temple, 75-69, on their

new home fl oor. The Tigers fi nished their fi rst season in SECU Arena with a 15-1 record. The staple of success during the Skerry era has been defense and rebounding. In three of the past four seasons, the Tigers have led the CAA in fi eld goal percentage defense and rebounding. Skerry has done an outstanding job of mixing in transfers to his recruiting classes. In his fi rst season, Skerry landed Georgetown transfer Jerrelle Benimon. In his two seasons at Towson, Benimon led the conference in scoring and rebounding. He was twice named the CAA Player of the Year, while also earning All-America honors following his junior season. Skerry’s fi rst recruiting class at Towson was ranked as the best in the CAA and sixth among all non-BCS schools, according to CBS Sports. Hardwork is not just limited to the court under Skerry. Since taking over as head coach, the team GPA raised to 2.881. Since the Fall of 1999, six of the top eight semester GPA’s have occurred under Skerry’s watch. During the 2014-15 academic year, the men’s basketball team had fi ve players with at least a 3.0 GPA during the fall semester, and six players with a 3.0 during the spring semester. Skerry has a perfect graduation rate since he became Towson’s head coach with 19 players earning degrees. This past season, the Tigers had a perfect APR multi-year score of 1,000. Skerry has used his platform as a head coach and teamed up with University of South Florida assistant coach Tom Herrion to start Autism Awareness in college basketball. What started as two guys with an idea fi ve years ago, has turned into a national event where hundreds of coaches where the prominent blue puzzle piece pin. The eff ort put forth by both Skerry and Herrion were recognized as the duo was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Guardians of the Game Service Award. Since taking over as head coach, Skerry has mentored 17 players that were honored as all-conference, all-rookie, all-defense or all-academic by the CAA.

2017-18 TOWSON TIGER BASKETBALL

Last Time Out For TowsonZane Martin scored a career best 24 points as Towson defeated Division III St. Mary’s, 90-57 on Monday. Martin was 9-for-12 from the fi eld and 5-of-7 from 3-point distance. The fi ve 3-pointers were a career best for Martin. He was one of four Towson players to reach double fi gures. Justin Gorham added 13 points, Mike Morsell scored 12 points and Jordan McNeil fi nished with 10 points. Towson made a season best 12 3-pointers.

A Look At La SalleMembers of the Atlantic-10 Conference, the Explorers are coming off of a thrilling 87-83 victory over Big 5 rival Temple on Sunday. The Explorers were led by Pookie Powell’s 29 points and B.J. Johnson’s 25 points. Johnson, a Syracuse transfer, has scored 20 or more points fi ve times this season. He leads La Salle in scoring (22.7) and rebounding (9.7). His scoring average is tops in the A10. La Salle is third nationally in FT percentage (82.6). Powell also averages double fi gures (16.4) for the Explorers. La Salle has three players averaging at least 37 minutes per game.

Common OpponentLa Salle and Towson each defeated Penn this season. The Explorers beat Penn, 75-71, in double overtime at the Palestra on Nov. 13. Towson rallied from a 10-point defi cit to beat Penn, 79-71, in the semifi nals of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Nov. 21.

Shining StarrBrian Starr has started 29 consecutive games. Towson is 19-10 during that span with a pair of six-game winning streaks included.

Morsell Free Throws Eff ectSince the start of last season, Towson is 11-1 when Mike Morsell attempts at least six free throws.

Three For AllTowson has made at least six 3-pointers in every game this season. The last time Towson had a stretch under head coach Pat Skerry in which it made at least six 3-pointers in six straight games was during the 2013-14 season against New Hampshire (6-21 on Dec. 30), Coppin State (10-24 on Jan. 4), UNCW (7-23 on Jan. 11), Drexel (8-16 on Jan. 14), Charleston (6-12 on Jan. 19) and Northeastern (6-25 on Jan. 22).

Lighting Up The ScoreboardTowson has scored at least 70 points in six straight games. It’s the longest streak of off ensive production under Towson head coach Pat Skerry. Believe it or not, this is the fi rst time a Towson basketball team has scored at least 70 points in six straight games since the 1996-97 squad hit 70 points in its fi nal eight games of the season. The Tigers were members of the America East Conference at the time. Vermont (81 points

A travel agents dream, Towson competed in the Gulf Coast Showcase in southwest Florida and returned to campus on Thanksgiving morning. The Tigers hosted St. Mary’s College on Monday. Towson made the 3,333-mile trek across the Atlantic Ocean to Belfast, Northern Ireland on Wednesday. This will be Towson’s second journey outside of the United States in six months. TIGERS RECORD WHEN...Carleton VictoryNot that it means much in the big picture, but it’s still worth noting that Towson defeated seven-time Canadian national champion, 76-64. That same Carleton team has defeated Vanderbilt twice, Alabama and Providence.

20 And CountingLast season was the third time in the last four years Towson won at least 20 games. It’s the fourth time since Towson has been a Division I program (fi rst year was 1979-80) that it won at least 20 games in a single season (1993-94, 2013-14, 2015-16 & 2016-17). The last three have been under Pat Skerry. It was the fi rst time that Towson posted consecutive 20-win seasons as a Division I program. Towson had consecutive 20 win seasons during its time as a Division II program in 1976-77 (27-3) and 1977-78 (26-4).

CAA Wins Since The 2012-13 SeasonSince the start of the 2012-13 season, Towson has the most regular season Colonial Athletic Association victories. The Tigers are 53-30 over that span.

SECU SuccessTowson is 47-16 all-time at SECU Arena after fi nishing the regular season with a 12-3 home record. Over the last three years, the Tigers are 26-6. The Tigers have won nine straight home games.

Working OvertimeTowson has won four consecutive overtime games dating back to the 2015-16 season. The game against Drexel on Feb. 2, 2017 was Towson’s fi rst double overtime game since it beat William & Mary at home, 99-86, on Jan. 9, 2013.

Marvelous MartinTowson sophomore Zane Martin has scored in double fi gures in six games this season. He

Towson has shown a spurtability charac-teristic early in the season. The Tigers have had runs of at least 10 or more points that have been fueled by their defense.

He will have four years of eligibility starting in 2018-19. “Quinton and I have decided to use a redshirt year on him for this season,” Skerry said. “We are very excited about his long term impact for us and with some upperclassmen at his position we want to make sure we maximize his career. We expect him to really improve this season and follow a similar suit like Jordan McNeil and Dennis
