Greetings from the Ambassador

Greetings from the Maldivian Embassy in Berlin, Germany.

Welcome all readers to the first issue of our quarterly online newsletter. In the newsletter we will feature significant events, news and stories of the past quarter and give a glimpse of the upcoming events. I trust that this digital newsletter will also pro-vide the readers with the much needed information about the Maldives Embassy in Berlin, Germany and the kind of work that we are engaged in and the developments.As Maldives is a popular tourist destination the world over and perceived as Paradise on Earth, we will also be happy to indulge you with the much needed information and scenic visuals of the “Sunny Side of Life”.

Deutschland ist in Europa das beliebteste Ziel der Malediven und wir hoffen, dass diese Statistik unverändert bleibt. Mein Hauptaugenmerk liegt auch auf der Förderung von Tourismus und Investitionen auf den Malediven und es wird ein Vergnügen und Privileg sein Sie alle in unsere Arena zu begrüßen.

Willkommen alle Leser zur ersten Ausgabe unseres vierteljähr-lichen Online-Newsletters. Im Newsletter werden wir wichtige Ereignisse, Neuigkeiten und Geschichten aus dem vergangenen Quartal vorstellen und einen Einblick in die kommenden Veran-staltungen geben. Ich vertraue darauf, dass dieser digitale News-letter den Lesern auch die dringend benötigten Informationen über die Maledivische Botschaft in Berlin und die Art der Arbeit in der wir uns wir engagieren und dessen Entwicklungen bietet.

Official Opening of the Embassy

The Maldives opened its first Embassy in Germany on 15 August 2016. The Embassy was officially opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mo-

hamed Asim on 28 September 2016.

Speaking at the function held on this occasion, Foreign Minis-ter Asim highlighted the close bilateral relations that existed between Maldives and Germany, and stated that a permanent presence in Berlin will go a long way to further strengthening relations between not only the governments but also the peo-ples of the Maldives and Germany. Minister Asim expressed hope that the partnership between Germany and the Maldives could be further expanded and consolidated in the coming years.

The partnership between Maldives and Germany has witnessed tremendous progress to date, particularly in the socioeconomic sphere. Since graduation from a Least Developing Country to a Middle Income Country, the Maldives has been striving for ma-jor economic development and social progress. To this end, we are grateful for the immense contribution Germany has made to-wards economic development in the Maldives, particularly in the field of tourism. Tourism is the largest economic industry in the Maldives and Germany has always been a key tourism market, with tourist arrivals amongst the highest from Europe. Indeed, the German travel market continues to remain strong and robust for the Maldives with nearly 60,000 German tourists arriving so far this year - an increase of more than 10% over the same period last year.

Our collaboration is not limited to the arrival of German Na-tionals as tourists however; in fact, hundreds of German na-tionals are employed both directly and indirectly in the tour-ism sector. Additionally, the quality and quantity of economic and trade links between Germany and the Maldives have in-creased in recent years. Over, 150 million euros of investments have been made in the Maldives by German companies in the last 4 years alone. And over 10 million euros of goods are im-ported from Maldives to Germany. And, over 35 million euros of goods were exported from Germany to Maldives last year.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany , open-ing of an Embassy in Berlin in 2016 is a significant milestone. Such a momentous anniversary year not only provides us with the opportunity to view our relationship with Germany through the lens of history but more importantly provides us the oppor-tunity to set the tone and direction of our relationship to come

During the past 50 years of formal diplomatic relations, both countries have maintained strong and friendly relations with each other, sharing parallel views and interests on a num-ber of international issues, such as climate change. However, we believe that there is scope for so much more. The partner-ship between Germany and the Maldives has enormous po-tential and we strongly believe that our partnership could be further expanded and consolidated in the coming years.

Die Malediven öffnete ihre erste Botschaft in Deutschland am 15. August 2016. Die Botschaft war Offiziell eröffnet von dem Minister des Auswärtigen Amtes, Exzellenz Dr.

Mohamed Asim am 28. September 2016. Sprechen auf der Ve-ranstaltung bei dieser Gelegenheit statt, Außenminister Asim unterstrich die enge bilaterale Beziehungen, die zwischen Mal-ediven und Deutschland existierte. Darüber hinaus stellte er fest, dass eine ständige Präsenz in Berlin wird einen langen Weg zur weiteren Stärkung gehen Beziehun-gen zwischen nicht nur der Regierung, sondern auch die Völker der Malediven und Deutschland.

Die Partnerschaft mit Malediven und Deutschland machte bis heute enorme Fortschritte, vor allem im sozioökono-mischen Bereich. Seit dem Abschluss des LDC-Status be-mühen sich die Malediven um große wirtschaftliche En-twicklung und sozialen Fortschritt. Dafür sind wir dankbar für den großen Beitrag, den Deutschland auf den Malediven gemacht hat, vor allem im Bereich des Tourismus. Touris-mus ist die größte Wirtschaft Industrie auf den Malediven und Deutschland war schon immer ein wichtiger Tourismus-markt mit touristischen Ankünften unter den höchsten aus Europa. Der deutsche Reisemarkt ist nach wie vor stark und robust für die Malediven mit fast 60.000 deutschen Tour-isten, die bisher in diesem Jahr ankamen - eine Steigerung von mehr als 10% gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum.

Wir gehen davon aus, dass die Gesamtankünfte in diesem Jahr 110.000 überschreiten werden. Unsere Zusammenarbeit bes-chränkt sich nicht nur auf die Ankunft der Deutschen als Touristen; In der Tat sind Hunderte von Deutschen sowohl direkt als auch in-direkt im Tourismussektor beschäftigt. Darüber hinaus haben sich die Qualität und die Quantität der Wirtschafts- und Handelsbezie-hungen zwischen Deutschland und den Malediven in den letzten Jahren erhöht. Über 150 Millionen Euro wurden auf den Malediv-en von den deutschen Unternehmen allein in den letzten 4 Jahren investiert. Und über 10 Millionen Euro werden aus Malediven nach Deutschland importiert. Und über 35 Millionen Euro wurden im vergangenen Jahr von Deutschland nach Malediven exportiert.

Als wir feiern den 50. Einrichtung Diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen den Malediven und Deutschland, Eröffnung einer Botschaft in Berlin im Jahr 2016 ist ein bedeutender Meilenstein. Ein solches Jubiläumsjahr bietet uns nicht nur die Möglichkeit un-sere Beziehung mit Deutschland durch die Linse der Geschichte zu sehen, aber vor allem bietet uns die Möglichkeit, Um den Ton und die Richtung unserer Beziehung festzulegen kommen.

Während der letzten 50 Jahre der formellen diploma-tischen Beziehungen, beide Länder beibehalten starke und Freundschaftliche Beziehungen zueinander, teilen parallele Ansichten und Interessen auf einer Reihe von internation-alen Themen wie Klimawandel. Wir glauben jedoch, dass es Raum für so viel mehr gab. Die Partnerschaft zwischen Deutschland und den Malediven hat enormes Potenzial und wir glauben fest daran, dass unsere Partnerschaft in den kommenden Jahren weiter ausgebaut und konsolidiert werden.

Während wir in einem so bedeutenden Jahr vorankommen,

bin ich zuversichtlich, dass die Beziehungen zwischen Malediven und Deutschland weiter gedeihen

Maldives at a Glance

Capital: Male’Poulation: 407,660 (2014 Census)Official Language: Dhivehi (Official), English

Location and GeographyThe Maldives consists approximately 1,190 coral islands clustered in a chain of 19 geographic atolls in the IndianOcean. The atolls are scattered along the north-south direction over an area covering roughly covering 90,000km². However approximately, only 1% of this surface area costs of land.

Weather & ClimateThe Maldives enjoys a tropical climate and has two distinct seasons; the dry season- April to December, and the wet season - Jan - March. The dry sea-son, as the name suggests, is a period of regular sunshine with little or no rain showers. This is also the best season for scuba diving. The wet season is a period in which the whole of Maldives eperiences torrential rain showers. This is the best season for surfing due to good swells and wave gneration. The Maldives enjoys year long sunshine. The temperature normally ranges from 23° C- 31°C.

Wetter & KlimaDie Malediven genieBen ein tropisches Klima und haben zwei verschiedene Jahreszeiten; die Trockenzeit von April bis Dezember und die Regenzeit - Jan.- Marz. Die Trockenzeit. wie der Name schon sagt, ist eine Periode von re gel-maBigem Sonnenschein mit wenig oder keinem Regenschauer. Dies ist auch die beste Jahreszeit fur Geratetauchen. Die Regenzeit ist ein Zeitraum. in dem die ganze Malediven. starke Regenfalle auftret. Dieses ist die beste Jahreszeit fur das Surfen wegen der guten Schwellen und der Wellenerzeu gung. Die Malediven genieBt Jahr lang Sonnenschein. Die Temperatur reichtnormalerweise von 23° C- 31°C
