Welcome to the 2016 WBFI Annual Meeting in beautiful Clearwater Beach! Once again, we have an exciting and informative meeting agenda, which you can peruse on the next few pages.

I’m pleased to report that our membership continues to be strong and ever-changing with the many acquisitions and consolidations that have taken place in our industry over the past year. We’ve also been honored to welcome many newcomers during that same time.

As our mission states: The Wild Bird Feeding Industry is an association dedicated to the progressive expansion of the backyard wild bird and backyard wildlife feeding industry.

We continue to support that mission by informing, uniting and advocating on the behalf of all of our member companies and the industry as a whole so that we all continue to have opportunities to grow.

I’m excited to tell you about some new initiatives your Board of Directors has taken over the past year to improve the value we offer to our members.

• We created a new committee called “SIR” to address foreseeable threats and create an immediate responsive action plan. An example would be identifying potential disease threats like salmonella and having resources available immediately to our members to combat negative public relations.

• We created a new Research Committee that will work hand in hand with the WBFI Research Foundation to identify relevant research opportunities that will further benefit the industry association. An example of this would be adapting our consumer market research to again include Canada as well as learning more about the consumer opportunity that exists with people who currently don’t feed wild birds.

• We’ve been further solidifying our Legal Defense Fund so we have adequate resources if an industry threat arises in which we need immediate resources to respond to, like excise tax legislation or something similar.

We would love for you to get involved in the industry association. We have several working committees that cover many topics and are always looking for more enthusiastic folks. I guarantee that you will get more than you give.

I want to thank all who have put in incredible time and effort to create this event: the members of Event Planning Committee; Sue Hays, WBFI’s Executive Director and all of the meeting sponsors that have graciously contributed toward creating another successful and memorable event.Lastly, I want every attendee to know that the WBFI truly values your feedback. Please take the time to fill out the surveys when invited throughout the event. I promise that you will be heard.

Enjoy your time here in Clearwater Beach and thank you for participating in this year’s WBFI Annual Meeting.

Sincerely,Dave Netten, President

SPRESTON BUFF

Preston Buff, Ph.D., Dipl., ACAN is the American Feed Industry Association’s director of regulatory affairs. He joined the association in March 2016. Buff is responsible for medicated feed, the veterinary feed directive, AFIA’s Equine and Nutrition committees, technical science issues and assisting with the legislative and regulatory efforts with the Association of American Feed Control Officials, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, state legislative and regulatory concerns for the southeastern U.S., and the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Buff earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Southwest Missouri State University, and his master’s and

doctorate degrees in animal sciences from the University of Missouri. He is a professional animal scientist and is board certified in equine nutrition by the American College of Animal Nutrition.

TODD J. UNDERWOODDepartment of Biology, Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA

My research interests are in the behavior, ecology, and conservation of birds. My long-term research has examined avian brood parasitism, which is a reproductive strategy where females lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and leave all parental care to these hosts. Here, I have focused on the interactions between the parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird and its hosts – especially egg recognition and ejection behavior by hosts. Although I continue to work on brood parasitism, I have developed additional research areas in the past ten years that include bird feeder hygiene, the reproductive biology of cavity-nesting birds that use nestboxes, and

the impact of alien plant species on native birds. My focus for bird feeder hygiene has been to test the effectiveness of seed feeder cleaning methods to develop standard cleaning recommendations for the public to reduce the spread of disease at feeders. My focus on the impact of alien plants has been to document the occurrence of birds becoming entangled in the burrs of burdock (Arctium spp.) plants and determine the causes of this unusual phenomenon. Finally, my work on bird reproduction in nestboxes has examined a number of different questions involving the biology and behavior of birds, such as House Wrens, Tree Swallows, and Eastern Bluebirds, that breed in nestboxes.

DR. DAVID J. HORN Dr. David J. Horn is an Associate Professor of Biology at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. Dr. Horn’s research interests include wild bird feeding, and the impact of wind turbines and windows on bird populations. Since his arrival to Millikin in fall 2005, David has received over 20 external research grants or sponsored research projects, and he and his students have given over 70 invited lectures or presentations at professional meetings, and published 10 manuscripts in science journals. For over 15 years, David has published numerous

scientific articles and given dozens of presentations on wild bird feeding. He served as Principal Investigator for PROJECT WILDBIRD®, a 3-year, $1 million study funded by the WBFI Research Foundation and hosted at Millikin University, and he and his colleague, Dr. Travis Wilcoxen, recently completed a four-year study examining how wild bird feeding influences the bird community and health of individual birds. His current research in bird feeding centers around product testing and development, and the creation of educational materials promoting the hobby. Dr. Horn grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. He earned a B.A. in Biology at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, a M.S. in Biological Sciences from The University of Mississippi, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Iowa State University.

Dr. Horn teaches a wide variety of courses. Among his favorite are a non-majors science course – Biology of Birds, and an upper-level course for biology majors – Ecology. Every other year he teaches a course that travels to the Galapagos Islands. David currently serves as a Coleman Entrepreneurship Fellow. Faculty fellows promote entrepreneurship activities across the disciplines, and he teaches a course titled “Creating a Scientific Business Venture.”
