The Messiah Stradivari comes back to Cremona

1716-2016

September 15th | December 18th

Beautiful, but unapproachable: unlike many violins built by AntonioStradivari, famous for their extraordinary timbre features, theMessiah violin has hardly ever been played. Its celebrity arises fromits exceptional state of preservation, with its nearly untouchedvarnish, as if it had just come out of Stradivari’s workshop. For thisreason it is a symbol and a stylistic reference point for violin makersworldwide.

This violin is believed to have been purchased by the collector Cozioda Salabue directly from Paolo Stradivari, son of Antonio, in 1775.It was then sold to the trader Luigi Tarisio in 1827: sale details werewritten inside the top plate by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, who boughtthe violin in 1855.

Tarisio often boasted about owning this outstanding instrument, somuch so that the soloist Delphin Alard is supposed to haveexclaimed: “Your violin is like a Messiah. Always awaited, neverappearing”.

It was later acquired by the London firm “W. E. Hill and Sons” andfinally, in 1939, entrusted to the Ashmolean Museum, with therestriction of not being moved nor played, in order to be preservedas a model for future violin makers.

Today it is displayed in Oxford, at the Ashmolean Museum, next tothe prestigious University. Since 1939 it has hardly been moved butin 2016, on the occasion of its 300th anniversary, it is returningexceptionally to Cremona, on exhibition from September 15th toDecember 18th at the Museo del Violino.

On December 5th, 2012 UNESCO registered the “traditional Cremonaviolin making know-how” into the Representative List of the World’sIntangible Cultural Heritage. Cremonese makers have been buildingbowed and stringed instruments since the 16th century. An indissolublelink connects late-Renaissance to contemporary workshops. AntonioStradivari’s method reveals itself not only through his instruments buteven more through the artifacts coming from his workshop – woodenmoulds, drawings, patterns, tools – currently exhibited at the Museodel Violino. Through the analysis of these materials we can understandeach step of the building process used by the master as well as itsdesign phase. The seminars are held by masters from Cremona, winners of the Concorso Triennale, teachers of the Scuola di Liuteriaand heirs of a great family tradition: Vinicio Bissolotti, Stefano Conia,Marcello Ive, Dante Fulvio Lazzari, Simeone Morassi, Marco Nolli,Primo Pistoni, Giorgio Scolari, Francesco Toto.

There is a connection between celestial bodies and the length of stringswhich make citharas and harps vibrate, as Pitagora observed a longtime ago. Talking about music means talking about numbers, measures, notes. The universe is music. In her exhibition at the Museo del Violino,Gabriella Benedini pays homage to Sofonisba Anguissola. It is an en-counter between two women and two artists. “Relating music to Sofo-nisba Anguissola” - said Benedini – “means making the deep stringsof time reverberate in a place that has become the temple of violin ma-king, a precious place bringing together the creativity, knowledge, ma-nual skills, calculation, elegant precision of our violin makers”. Thesculptures of Cremona-born artist Gabriella Benedini metaphoricallyecho the shape of musical instruments. Gillo Dorfles once wrote aboutthe latter: “Maybe these are not sounds but ultrasounds emitted not bymaterial objects but by immaterial forms conceived, designed and thenmysteriously shaped by the artist assembling material he/she hasfound, handled and bent according to secret aims”. In the “Concertoper Sofonisba” exhibition, the artist – just like a violin maker of old –creates a multitude of imaginary musical instruments that have beenenriched, over time, with shapes, with materials and synthesis in thequest for the ideal metamorphosis, with poetic resonance and with theart of the much-admired Sofonisba.

Two catalogues about the extraordinary heritage currently exhibited inthe Museo del Violino have been published over the years. The first cata-logue, edited by Simone Fernando Sacconi, was published in 1972, andthe second one, edited by Andrea Mosconi and Carlo Torresani, appeared15 years later. In both cases, the catalogues included only the technicalfiles of the 709 objects considered as coming from Stradivari’s workshopthat were previously exhibited in the Museo Civico. In this new volume, the complete catalogue of more than 1.300 artifacts that come from theworkshops of Antonio Stradivari and Enrico Ceruti will be available for thefirst time. The accurate historical reconstruction, the study of the previoustwo catalogues, the paleographic and scientific investigations will cast anew light on this extraordinary heritage that is indissolubly linked to the workof Stradivari and to the traditional violin making craftsmanship recognizedby UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Only at the Museo del Violino it is possibleto listen to the sound of Stradivari’s, Amati’sand Guarneri’s magnificent instruments, re-living in the hands of expert soloists, toexperience moments of unforgettablepoetry. The natural stage for thesemasterpieces is the Giovanni ArvediAuditorium, a unique place wherearchitecture tries to “catch” the sound to turnit into images; music, naturally intangible, takes shape, becomes material: theeverlasting and the evanescent mergetogether in an eternal exchange in the placethat celebrates the great violin makingtradition of Cremona.

There are just a few instruments inthe world having the same symbolicand historical meaning as the “CarloIX” violin made in 1566ca by AndreaAmati. The definition of masterpiece

could not be more appropriate: itwas its maker who developed, in the

mid Sixteenth century, the mainfeatures of the violin family that, except for some changes in the

proportions of violas and cellos, arestill the same today.

On the occasion of its 450th

anniversary, the Museo del Violinopays homage to this precious

instrument and its brilliant maker inthe same year when the city of

Cremona is to dedicate an exhibitionto the engineer and inventor Janello

Torriani, also an eminent figure inSixteenth-century Cremona.
