In dealing with the winter cold, if you don’t remember anything

else, remember this: A clean and dry hair coat is essential for the animal to maintain body heat.

Beth Doran, Iowa State University Extension beef program specialist, explained in a news release with most winter hair coats, there are longer guard hairs. These keep snow from reaching the denser undercoat that insulates the skin and muscle.

If moisture reaches the skin in the winter, the animal will lose body heat. Likewise, if the hair becomes matted with mud or manure, body heat will be lost. This is why a clean, dry area is essential for the animal. Providing bedding is a good way to help keep the animal

dry and warmer. Both oat straw and corn stover are common bedding materials that have good absorbency.

In a North Dakota trial, researchers looked at the effect of the amount of bedding (wheat straw) on the winter performance of open feedlot cattle. Bedding treatments were none, modest amount (385 lbs. per animal) and generous amount (674 lbs. per animal). Bedding increased average daily gain, dressing percent and percentage of carcasses grading Choice. All are good reasons to provide bedding.

Another way to increase warmth is to provide a windbreak. An 80 percent solid fence for 20 percent open space reduces wind speeds for a greater distance and spreads the snow out for

faster melting. A minimum height of 10 feet for this fence is recommended for better wind control. Windbreaks can be constructed with wood, metal, or forage bales.

The Association is seeking items to be donated for the benefit auction. In the past there have been a wide variety of unique and interesting things donated, as well as food items. There also have been cattle supplies, embryos and semen donated. The money raised from this auction goes to support the travel expenses of the HLA Executive Secretary. unfrozen water is essential for dry matter intake. As a rough rule, plan on approximately one gallon of water for every 100 lbs. body weight of the animal. Increased heat production by the animal during cold stress also requires increased energy in the diet.

The energy needs of the beef animal increase 1 percent for every degree below 32 degrees for a beef animal with a normal winter hair coat.

Think of what you prefer in winter weather. Good housing, a nice winter coat, and plenty of food and drink sound pretty good. Your cattle deserve the same!

The Heartland Limousin Association has booked a seven-

night cruise on the Crown Princess, sailing from Seattle, Washington, July 23, 2016, to several ports in Alaska before returning to Seattle July 30. We invite anyone who might be interested to join us on this adventure to the “last frontier”.

The ship sails on Saturday on its way through the Inside Passage. It makes stops in Juneau, where you can see the famous Mendenhall Glacier; the historic town of Skagway, and Ketchikan where you can observe all the interesting totem poles. In addition, the cruise also takes you past Glacier Bay and makes a stop in Victoria, British Columbia.

The rates for the cabins include all government taxes and port fees. The inside cabins are $1,318 or $1,348, depending on location on the ship. An ocean view cabin is $1,918, and a cabin with a balcony is $2,218.

Document All Livestock LossesProducers with excessive livestock

losses due to adverse natural and environmental conditions may qualify for compensation under the 2014 farm bill, according to North Dakota State University Extension Service Livestock Stewardship Specialist Gerald Stokka.

This compensation would be for losses above and beyond those that occur under normal circumstances.

“For example, spring snowstorms that result in excessive death loss of newborn calves due to hypothermia may be eligible for payments if farmers and ranchers keep documentation of losses.” Stokka says. “This does not mean estimated losses, but actual numbers or tag numbers of older calves and cattle.”

Losses indirectly due to adverse conditions, such as calf scours and respiratory disease, also may be eligible for compensation. These losses may be due to inadequate colostral intake and absorption as a result of the environmental conditions.

“Keep records of losses of calves or cows so that eligibility can be determined.” Documentation with calving books, inventories of cows at pregnancy checking time or calf-working events, and date-stamped images would be useful.

“Contact and maintain a good working relationship with your veterinary clinic and extension agent to assist in recordkeeping and causes of losses,” Stokka advises.

We are entering the 15th year of service to the Heartland. The

one constant ingredient to our time is “change.” Our breed has changed. Our demographics are different. Our service to the Heartland has evolved

from one of survival to one of genuine promotion of Limousin genetics. We have always had promotion as a priority. Events, issues, and philosophies have impacted what and when we do it.

Our breed has improved tremendously, thanks to the sincere desire on the part of breeders who recognized our weaknesses and improved on them. Docility has changed 1,000% from wild and nervous attitudes to one of non-aggressiveness and calm for the most part. That, in itself, is a great advancement for Limousin. We need to keep working to resolve some lingering attitudes.

Our ability to grade choice has increased to above industry averages. Although perceptions and reputations die hard, we should not have the stigma of high percent standards and no rolls anymore. This is not to say that Limousin has eliminated all problems, but our percent of standard grades is continuing to decline because of improved genetics and a understanding of where Limousin fits best. Limousin and implants are antagonistic in producing a quality product. If we can increase quality grade and maintain higher percentage of yield per carcass by not using implants or artificial growth hormones and at the same time, take advantage of the growing natural market, it is a win-win for Limousin.

It is apparent to me that what works best in the upper Midwest may not work as well in the southern cattle growing regions. While purebred and the color red are more popular in the upper Midwest, Lim-Flex and black is probably more acceptable elsewhere. Either way, we have a product that can fit the environmental requirements better than most other breeds. Our ability to cross on English based cattle is phenomenal. We add muscle, growth, and efficiency to the feeder industry, which will increase

the bottom line profit for producers, feedlots, and packers.

The Limousin breed needs to continue to unite behind the breed and produce what is needed in the beef industry. Acceptance of Fullblood, Purebred, and Lim-Flex needs to be embraced by all Limousin groups. There is room for improvement in every sector of Limousin. In general, I would like to see consistency improved in the Lim-Flex area. I would like to see a little more depth of body and capacity increased in the purebred sector. I would like to see more improvement of polled Fullbloods along with bit more docility. Never think we have reached the pinnacle of success. We are still working to improve our product. But we have come a long way in the last 15 years.

We hope to see you at Denver for the NWSS and at Limousin bull sales this spring. Buy with confidence that we are on the right track. As Kevin Ochsner often says, “On the road to the future of the beef industry, he will be driving a Limousin.” We all need that vehicle.

Mission Statement of theHeartland Limousin Association

The purpose for which the HLA is organized is to serve as a service organization designed to promote and further enhance the Limousin breed of cattle in the seven state area comprised of IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, SD and WI.

The goals for the Association shall include promotion, strengthening state and junior associations within the region; development of a regional publication; improvement of communication and a unified attitude of breeders; to provide market information and expertise; to serve as a coordinator of events between the Association and the industry; to increase breeder involvement; and to strengthen ties between the NALF and the Heartland Limousin Association.

As I write this column in the middle of November, we are

experiencing our first flakes of snow here in Minnesota. This has been an unusual fall for us with warmer than usual temperatures, sunny days mixed in with plenty of moisture, and lots of wind. If the temperatures had been colder, we would have lots of snow on the ground by now.

By the time the paper comes out, the holiday season will have come and gone. We are blessed to be able to spend the time with family and friends. Thanksgiving always gives us time to pause and reflect on the many things we have to be thankful

for; faith, family, friends, good health, and the ability to travel for the Heartland.

It is always fun to celebrate Christmas through the eyes of a child. Dean and I are grateful that we have four wonderful granddaughters (ages 13, 9, 9, and 7) who help us see the wonder of the season.

We have had a busy fall attending Limousin events and sales. One evening that we will remember for a long time occurred in Nevada, Missouri, at the Double A sale. We had traveled to the sale in the afternoon of November 7 with Jerry and Pat Meek of Parker, Kansas. We had a great time visiting with the many Limousin breeders who attended the sale.

When the sale was over, we were busy taking photos when I heard Pat talking to Dean. Right away I realized there was a problem. Jerry has two artificial hips, and the left hip popped out (this is the fourth time in 15 years this has happened). He was in a lot of pain and we knew that we had to get him to a hospital.

Several people came to our rescue. Dennis Alt had an office chair on wheels, strong young men helped get Jerry moved from the folding chair to the office chair, and they pushed him out to our new Town and County

vehicle. We were fortunate to have that car because of the large, sliding side doors.

The closest orthopedic surgeon was in Olathe, Kansas, so we set off for the 120-mile trip. We hit a skunk on the way. We tried to think of funny things that have happened over the years to help keep Jerry’s mind off the pain.

We arrived at the hospital around 9:00 p.m. X-rays were taken to ensure the hip was “out of place.” He was prepped for surgery; they twisted his leg so the hip went back into place, and he was ready for the ride back to Parker once he came out of the anesthesia. We arrived back at their farm at 1:00 a.m.

It was a very short night for us. We had to be on the road by 6:30 a.m. in order to be in Leon, Iowa, for the Linhart Sale. Needless to say, Dean and I took turns driving on the way home, which gave us each time for some much needed rest.

Directions:• Whisk first 6 ingredients in a large slow cooker.

• Add roast, turn to coat.

• Add 1 cup water and bay leaf.

• Cover and cook on low until tender, 5 to 7 hours.

• Remove roast from slow cooker, shred meat.

• Skim fat from liquid.

• Strain, pour into 8 small ramekins.

• Place a rack 5 inches from heat source, preheat broiler.

• Slice rolls in half, butter insides and place on a baking sheet.

• Toast rolls until light golden, 30 seconds to 1 minute.

• Pile beef on bottom halves of rolls, cover with top halves and serve with sauce.

Congratulations to NALF Executive Vice President Mark Anderson and his wife, Tammy, of Eaton, CO, on their first grandchild. Cole Michael Anderson was born October 19, 2015, and weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz. His parents are Cooper and Dani Anderson of FL.

Megan Wieczorek and Bradley White were married August 15, 2015, in Mitchell, SD, at Mitchell Wesleyan Church. The bride is the daughter of Curt and Leanne Wieczorek of Wieczorek Limousin, Mt. Vernon, SD. The couple is presently residing in Marion, IN, while they finish their

college education.

Get well wishes are sent to Charlene Doyle of Eddyville, Iowa. She was hospitalized at the beginning of November with a low sodium count. It was great to see her at the ILA annual meeting in Ames November 21.

We wish a speedy recovery to Phil Shipman of Girard, Kansas. He was

injured when he fell from a tractor this fall.

Our sympathy is extended to Cindy and Ed Bergler of Cripple Creek Cattle Co., Dakota, Minnesota, on death of Cindy’s father. He passed away in the middle of November.

Fullblood Limousin Alliance News…Annual Meeting for Fullblood Alliance to be Held in Arkansas

The annual meeting of

the Fullblood L i m o u s i n Alliance (FLA)

will be held in Harrison, Arkansas, January 23, 2016. The location will be

announced on the Fullblood website. The alternative date is January 30 if there is inclement weather.

Among the items to be discussed are the place and date for the 2016 National FLA Show, advertising and an Online Sale in the spring. In addition, the

results of the voting for members of the board of directors will be announced.

We hope to have a large group of Fullblood members attend this annual meeting. We appreciate everyone who took the time to mail in their ballots. Members who attend the meeting can

vote in person. In addition, the ballot also included voting for president of the FLA. Randy McCutcheon, Arkansas, vice-president; Kim Kosmicke, Missouri, secretary; and Joe Latendresse, Oklahoma, treasurer won their offices by acclamation.

L a n d o n Josten of Forest City won the $500 Iowa State Fair/Beef Expo Heifer Award. He purchased his heifer from Vorthmann Limousin of Treynor at the 2015 Limousin Beef Expo Sale and returned to show at the Iowa State Fair. He had the highest placing heifer at the Iowa State Fair show.

Bacon Bomb Winner at Iowa State Fair

The “Ultimate Bacon Brisket Bomb” was unveiled as the winner of this year’s New Fair Food Contest at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

The bomb’s creator, Joni Bell of the Rib Shack, explained that she “just played with the recipe over the winter” to assemble her contest winner.

Ultimate Bacon Brisket Bomb is smoked pure ground brisket, diced jalapenos, a few onion, infused with a pepper cheese, all wrapped in bacon, and served with a sweet and spicy chili glaze.

Iowa Beef Expo Hotel Headquarters

The Quality Inn Motel has set aside a block of rooms for the Iowa Beef Expo Limousin events in February. The hotel is located at 4995 Merle Hay Rd. in Des Moines. The rate is $64 + tax. Call 515/278-2381 and mention the ILA block when making reservations.

The Limousin show is scheduled for Tuesday morning, February 16. The Heartland Limousin Association annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction will be held at 5:30 p.m. that evening at the FFA Building on the fairgrounds. The sale takes place the following day, Wednesday, February 17.

Iowa News…Members Meet in Ames

Members of the Iowa Limousin Association held their annual meeting Saturday, November 21 at the Iowa Cattleman’s Building in Ames.

The day began with a meeting of the senior board followed by the junior board meeting and the annual members meeting. Due to the snow and ice covered roads, the meetings were pushed back an hour.

There was a time for socializing before the delicious barbecue meal catered by Hickory Park.

Thanks to Bruce Walrod for serving as auctioneer. Awards were auctioned for the Iowa Field Day as well as a wide assortment of donated items on the benefit auction. In addition, juniors devised a unique way to raise funds, they were “auctioned off ” to work for members.

Moorland and Joe Brewer of Dallas Center for their service on the board. We welcome Bruce’s daughter, Bailey,

and Dana Duckett of Grimes as the newly elected members of the ILA board of directors.

Josh Guttau and Rick Fox of Guttau-Fox Cattle Co., Treynor, Iowa, were selected as the ILA Commercial Producer of the Year. They will be given their plaque and honored at the Iowa Beef Expo February 17, 2016.

Long & Sons Limousin Inducted into ILA Hall of FameVernon and Deva Long of Long

& Sons Limousin, Afton, Iowa, were inducted into the Iowa Limousin Association (ILA) Hall of Fame November 21. The ceremony took place in conjunction with the Iowa annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction.

Service to the ILA and promotion of Limousin genetics are the basis for the selection of inductees to the Hall of Fame. Vernon and Deva’s service to the ILA began in 1976 when Vernon was first elected to the board of directors.

Over the years, Vernon served as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. In his 18 years of service, he missed only one meeting. At that time meetings were “formal” and members wore business attire.

Deva assisted with the officer duties, attended events and is remembered as the piano player for the 1988 and 1996 National Junior Limousin Shows held in Des Moines.

They began in the Limousin breed in 1970 and have used genetics

from France, Ireland, Canada and the United States to build their purebred Limousin herd. The Lismore Joueur bull, a Fullblood yearling imported from Ireland, was a cornerstone herd sire for many years. They raised Polled Punchline and sold semen internationally.

Long & Sons were named the ILA Seedstock Producers of the Year in 1983. Vernon’s innovative ideas launched the International Polled Congress, a separate Limousin show and sale at the Iowa Beef Expo. At one time, 200 head of Iowa cattle were featured on this sale.

Promoting Limousin genetics is a family affair. Vernon and Deva’s children; William, Kristin and Darren, actively showed cattle at the local, regional and national levels. William and Darren served on the IJLA board and William also was a NALJA board member.

Kansas News…KLBA Hosts Commercial Program at Kansas State Stout CenterThe Kansas Limousin Breeders

Association (KLBA) hosted a program titled “Beef Profits on the Prairie” for seedstock and commercial producers. It was held at the Stanley Stout Center located on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan November 14.

Over 50 people attended the event that included time for social conversation along with the program. Several speakers highlighted the use and promotion of Limousin genetics. This first-time event was a success and the KLBA is planning to expand the venue in 2016.

Speakers on the program presented a variety of subjects concerning the Limousin breed. Dr. Bob Weaber of Kansas State University had a PowerPoint presentation on Genomics and how they enhance and validate EPDs when selecting future Limousin genetics.

Frank Padilla of the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) presented methods for

increasing a customer base through improved customer service and offering a quality product.

Dean Summerbell, representing the Heartland Limousin Association, was optimistic on the future of Limousin in the Beef Industry. He related recent trends in the industry that give Limousin an advantage producing what the retail consumers desire.

Clay Schilling, Schilling Cattle of Edson; Cole Smith, Liberty Ranch of Plainville; Alan Eggenberger, Eggenberger Limousin of Berryton; and Gene Raymond, GV Limousin of Garnett, presented an overview of their Limousin operations.

John Havens and Craig Kerbs, representatives of Zoetis and New Generation Supplements (Smartlic) respectively, gave talks on their

products, had displays set up and invited the audience to look over their products.

The meal was sponsored by Randy and Nancy Corns, Super C Limousin of Eureka. Thank you! Door prizes were also given out throughout the afternoon and evening. Thanks to everyone who donated the prizes and attended this informative event.

The social will begin at 11:15 a.m. followed by a junior meeting at 11:30 a.m. and the banquet at Noon. Please let any members of the Minnesota Limousin Breeders Association board of directors know what you will be donating to the benefit auction. If you are unable to attend, they would appreciate your bid (you can leave it with any board member or be on the phone during the auction).

We appreciate the support of our members who attend the banquet, donate and purchase items on the benefit auction, and participate in the Limousin events throughout the year. The money raised goes to support activities of the junior and senior associations throughout the upcoming year.

Moser Farms Donates HeiferMoser Farms, located south of

Morris, consists of 1,500 acres of cropland, an 80-head cow-calf operation and finishes 3,000 head of feeder pigs a year. Jon and Lori, along with the four children; Jenna (Moser) and Reed Kampmeier, Jacob, Joanna and Justus, have a strong passion for agriculture and especially the beef industry.

Their beef enterprise started when a neighboring 4-H’er offered her help by saying, “Jake, if you’d like to be in the beef project, we’ll help you.” Jacob decided to pursue his interest in beef by exhibiting a steer in 4-H the following year.

The Limousin breed has brought the family to regional and national Limousin shows, local jackpot shows, and the Minnesota Beef Expo, as well as county and state fairs. Their herd currently consists of Limousin, Lim-Flex and Angus registered females. The Moser’s are active in their county 4-H and local

Branstyn Peterson Receives MYBEP Limousin Heifer

Branstyn Peterson, son of Daryl and Marilee Peterson of Gibbon, Minnesota, received the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP) Limousin heifer donated by the Moser family of Morris, Minnesota, October 17. A total of 11 heifers were awarded to juniors during the Minnesota Beef Expo. Branstyn is a ninth grade student at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW) High School.

He has shown beef projects at the county, regional, and national level. In addition, Branstyn won first place in public speaking, took grand champion honors in the intermediate beef showmanship, and competed in the cattlemen’s quiz bowl. He has also led the Sibley County consumer education display called “Speaking up for Animal Agriculture” at the Minnesota State Fair.

Branstyn is a member of the Blazin’ West Stars 4-H Club, the GFW Pioneer Express FFA chapter, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church men’s and bell choirs. He also plays football, basketball, and golf.

His goal is to be able to start his own herd of cattle and become a breeder so he can donate a heifer back to the MYBEP program. He takes care of his animals and enjoys showing them at the various competitions. Branstyn hopes to attend college majoring in Ag Communications or Animal Nutrition.

Kuehne’s Hold SaleDave and Glynis Kuehne, Kuehne’s Rocky Creek Ranch, held a Bred Female

Production Sale on Sunday, November 22 at their farm near Long Prairie, Minnesota. They decided to scale back their registered operation, selling approximately 45 females. A nice crowd of commercial breeders, friends, and neighbors gathered in their sale facility on a chilly afternoon for the sale.

The Van Santens of Battle Lake, MN, purchased cattle at the Kuehne Rocky Creek Ranch Herd Reduction sale.

Minnesota Beef Expo Held at State Fairgrounds

The Minnesota Beef Expo, one of the premier beef industry

events in the region, enjoyed one of the highest attendance numbers in the 15-year history of the Expo. It was held over the Minnesota Education Association Convention days October 15-18 at the state fairgrounds in St. Paul.

The Expo focuses on junior activities with seminars, shows, sales, and a special program that awards qualified youth a heifer for one year. The program is in its 11th year and is known as the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP). Breeders and sponsors presented 11 juniors with heifers at the MYBEP awards ceremony Saturday night, October 17. Members of nine breed associations, plus the Minnesota Cattlemen’s Association, donated open females born in 2015 to qualified juniors. The 100th female of the program was donated by the Minnesota State Fair Board.

If the juniors meet all the requirements, including staying in touch with the family who donated the heifer, keeping records on feeding and maintenance, and bringing the heifer back the next year to show in the Expo, they will be able to keep the heifer to start their own cattle herd.

The Minnesota Limousin Association has participated in the program every year. Jon, Lori, Joanna and Justus Moser and their family donated a purebred Limousin heifer from their herd. This year’s recipient of the Limousin heifer was Branstyn Peterson of Gibbon, Minnesota. He exhibited his donated heifer on Sunday at the Minnesota Junior Show, winning his class and drawing positive comments in the Limousin champion drive.

Junior ShowJuniors from Minnesota and

Wisconsin exhibited 18 Limousin females in the junior show October 18. Over 800 head of registered and commercial cattle were shown in two rings.

Judge Gary Crow of Franklin, TX, selected CHFF Bling, a 10/12/14 64% Lim-Flex daughter of EF Xcessive Force out of CHHF Xtra Sweet as the grand champion Limousin female. She was exhibited by Laura Church of Hastings, MN.

Reserve grand champion honors went to BHAT Breanna 420B, a 3/19/14 purebred daughter of WLR Direct Hit out of JWBL Wendy 55W exhibited by Joanna Moser of Morris, MN.

The champion Limousin prospect steer weighed 670 lbs. and was exhibited by Paige Janke of Hixton, Wisconsin.

This large group of donors over the past 13 years have generously given heifers to the MYBEP program at the Minnesota Beef Expo. The 100th heifer was donated by the Minnesota State Fair Board of Directors.

Missouri News…

The Missouri Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) will host

the 2016 Heartland Regional Show at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield June 10 and 11. The show will be held in conjunction with the annual MLBA field day shows.

It will be a busy weekend with three shows in three days; the Missouri Junior Show on Friday, the Heartland Regional Show on Saturday and the Missouri Open Show on Sunday. Additional information will be printed in the March/April Heart Beat along with the HLA entry form. We hope to have a large participation of Missouri members attend these events in Springfield.

Ty and Susie Heavin along with Ed Pinegar, the Pinegar crew, and members of the MLBA will serve as hosts for the field day and Heartland Regional Show. We appreciate the work and effort you put in to make this a first-class event.

Members Had Busy FallMembers of the MLBA junior and

senior associations were busy this fall holding production and consignment sales, traveling to sales, and taking part in the American Royal and NAILE Limousin Shows.

The Heart of Missouri Sale took place October 11 in Lebanon followed by the American Royal Limousin Show October 29 in Kansas City. The Double A sale in Nevada took place November 7, and the NAILE Medal of Excellence Level I Show was held in

Louisville, Kentucky, with the junior Limousin show November 14, and the open Limousin show November 18. In addition, members took part in Ak-Sar-Ben held in Omaha the last weekend of September.

It was great to see so many Limousin breeders, their families and junior members participate in these activities. Many will be headed to Denver for the National Western Stock Show in January!

Juniors have an opportunity to judge the Fancy Heifers Saturday, February 20, there is a Showmanship Blow-n-Go competition, and the youth judging contest awards are presented. The youth compete in the Breeding Heifer, Market Heifer and Steer Shows on Sunday.

Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Headquarters Hotel

The Country Inn & Suites has been selected as the headquarters hotel for the Nebraska Limousin Association (NLA) for the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney February 17 and 18. The hotel is located at 105 Talmadege St. in Kearney. To make reservations, call 308/236-7500.

Grayhm Beck, 7-year-old son of Jamie and Alycia (Beck) Watts of Fairfield, Nebraska, has been diagnosed with Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease (BAVD). The main artery in his heart has two flaps instead of three, and Grayhm’s does not open or close right.

For the past three years, the family has made regular trips to see a team of doctors at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Grayhm’s symptoms have

worsened, and they will now meet with a pediatric cardiologist and their team at Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

The 2016 show will be held January 26-30. The Limousin events begin with a show at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, January 28 followed by the sale at 2:45 p.m. Chisum Peterson of Pukwana, South Dakota, serves as the auctioneer. The Supreme Row judging takes place Friday followed by junior activities on Saturday.

Elementary Students Learn About Healthy Beef

This past summer elementary students had the opportunity to learn more about where their food comes from at the Ground Works-Midwest Youth Eating Smart (YES!) Summer School Day Camps.

The YES! Day camps were held at Hayward Elementary, Lennox Elementary, Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum, and Dell Rapids Elementary, all in South Dakota.

Holly Swee, RE, LN, South Dakota Beef Industry Council director of nutrition and consumer information was on-hand at the day camps to offer recipe ideas for including healthy beef in the diet of active, growing kids.

“During the camp, the kids made a wrap that included deli roast beef, vegetables, hummus, and a whole wheat wrap,” said Swee. They also deconstructed a cheeseburger, and learned how each ingredient in the burger comes from agriculture.”

Limousin Steers Excel In Carcass Competition

The South Dakota State Fair held an ultrasound carcass competition during the fair the first week of September where 74 head of market steers and heifers from all breeds competed. They were evaluated on a retail value per carcass weight basis.

The top carcass award went to Jacob Prouty of Vienna, South Dakota, with his Wulfs Xclusive X2458X son purchased from Symens Brothers of Amherst, South Dakota. This steer weighed in at 1,485 lbs., had a carcass weight of 935 lbs., a 20.7 sq. in. ribeye and graded Choice with a 0.6 yield grade.

Taking fourth-place honors was Mikayla Prouty of Vienna, South Dakota, with her steer sired by Wulfs Urban Cowboy 2149U, also purchased from Symens Brothers. Her steer weighed 1,290 lbs., had a carcass weight of 812 lbs., a 16.4 sq. in. ribeye and graded Choice with a 1.5 yield grade.

Wisconsin News…

Blane Keyes, son of Jeff and Cheryl Keyes, of Knapp, Wisconsin, donated part of the proceeds of the sale of his steer to his former elementary school. He is a sixth-grade student at Menomonie Middle School in Menomonie. His donation went to help the Knapp Elementary School, grades K-5.

He purchased a steer to show at the Dunn County Fair and named him Bocephus. At the time of the fair, the steer weighed 1,420 lbs. Blane’s steer won his class and sold during the Meat Animal Auction. It brought $2.75/lb. at the auction.

Blane wanted to give a portion of the money from the steer to the elementary school to be used toward a new playground and/or field trips for the students. The rest of the money earned from the auction went to his college savings account.

Over the years, Blane and his sister, Jordyn, and brother, Del, have donated money to the preschool they attended, to their church, to their 4-H club, to school clubs collecting for Christmas charities, and they have bought a gas card for a family driving to/from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for treatments.

Juniors Travel to Minnesota for the Beef Expo

Several Wisconsin juniors traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota, October 15-18 to take part in the 16th annual Minnesota Beef Expo.

The event included a variety of activities in addition to the junior show which was held Sunday, October 18. Four Wisconsin juniors took part in the heifer show and one exhibited a steer.

The Iowa junior board held their meeting at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Building in Ames.

Iowa juniors who attended the annual meeting in Ames November 21.Laura Church of Hastings, MN, receives the grand champion plaque at the Minnesota Beef Expo Junior Show.

Missouri juniors had a great time at the Double A Land & Cattle Sale near Nevada, MO, November 8.

Zane Reed and his sister, Morgan, purchased their heifers from the Linhart sale offering in Leon.

The Iowa Juniors offered a day’s work to the highest bidder. All were hired by the senior ILA Limousin members.

Konrad and Kacey Boyer from Weldon, IA, looked over the Bosch heifer offering before eating lunch at the Bosch sale in Indianola, IA.

Anna and Amber Johnson of the Sebeka, MN, FFA chapter, competed in the Agronomy contest at the National FFA Convention in November. Their team placed ninth and Anna placed fifth individually.

Two scholarships are available to Heartland Limousin Association (HLA) juniors. Application forms can be obtained by contacting

Dean Summerbell, HLA Executive Secretary, at 612/963-3799 or sending an e-mail to bjsummerbell@gmail.com.

The Leonard Wulf Memorial Scholarship will be awarded at the Heartland banquet February 16. This will take place at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Expo.

Scholarship winners will be required to complete a 3-5 day work study with a farm/ranch or industry related company. The winner will also need to write a short article about their experience for the Heart Beat. The $500 scholarship will be awarded to the selected candidate, upon acceptance to a school or college, and will be given directly to that institution.

Applications must be received by February 1. The HLA board will review the applications at their winter meeting and the winner will be announced at the HLA banquet. Last year’s recipient was Ashlee Corns of Altoona, Kansas.

The Ron and Carolyn Holland Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving junior member at the end of the school year. Applications for this scholarship can also be obtained by contacting Dean Summerbell.

The money from this scholarship will be given out for the four years the student is in school; $500 per year for a total of $2,000. This is a limited-time scholarship and we appreciate the generosity of Ron Holland who funded this award.

Applications must be received by June 1. The HLA board will review the applications at their summer meeting and the winner will be announced at the HLA Regional Show. The winner of last year’s scholarship was Anna Johnson of Sebeka, Minnesota.

Prepare For A SuccessfulSpring-Calving Season

Someone once said, “success occurs when opportunity meets with preparation”.

Planning for spring-calving season can help increase the chances of success.

There are several steps that would be good to conduct this winter to ensure success in February, March and April according to an Oklahoma State University Extension news release.• Equipment: Before calving season starts, do a

walk-through of pens, chutes and calving stalls. Make sure all are clean, dry, strong, safe and functioning correctly.

• Protocol: Before calving season starts, develop a plan of what to do, when to do it, who to call for help (along with phone numbers), and how to know when you need help.Make sure all family members or helpers are

familiar with the plan. It may help to write it out and post copies in convenient places.

Talk to the local veterinarian about the protocol and incorporate his/her suggestions. Your

veterinarian will be a lot more helpful when you have an emergency if you have talked a few times during regular hours.• Supplies: Always have the following: disposable

obstetrical sleeves, non-irritant antiseptic, lubricant, obstetrical chains (60 in. and/or two 30 in. chains), two obstetrical handles, mechanical calf pullers and injectable antibiotics.Many lubricants have been used and one of the

best lubricants is probably the simplest—non-detergent soap and warm water.

Do not forget the simple things like a good flashlight with extra batteries and some old towels or a rolls of paper towels.

their new sale facility near Leon, Iowa, November 8. Charles, Heather, David and Lana Linhart greeted the large crowd who traveled from several states and aggressively bid on the set of quality females. When the final gavel came down, cattle had been sold to buyers from 21 states.

Wulf Cattle of Morris, Minnesota, held their second annual Fall Female Sale Tuesday,

November 24. C.K. “Sonny” Booth was the auctioneer for this online event.

They offered a quality set of Limousin, Lim-Flex and Angus heifers direct from their replacement groups. In addition, they also sold a set of commercial females that were raised in their program at Sandy Ridge Ranch in Atkinson, NE.

The top-selling Limousin was Wulfs Bellbrook 4832B, a 5/13/14 homozygous black, homozygous polled 50% Lim-Flex daughter of Wulfs Yogi 1020Y out of Wulfs Xtra Curricular 0552. She was purchased by Vorthmann Limousin of Treynor, Iowa, for $5,700.

Another popular lot was Wulfs Bethany 4784B, a 4/13/14 homozygous black, homozygous polled daughter of Wulfs Yankee K689Y out of Miss Wulfette 7028T. Josh Lensing of Lewistown, Montana, had the final bid of $5,500.

John Petritti of Whitehall, Montana, bought Wulfs Bonnet 4184B for $4,800. She is a 4/12/14 black, homozygous polled daughter of RUNL Stetson 850S out of Wulfs Ready Made 5093R.

Dan and Melinda Hunt, along with their children, Adeline, Jenna and Houston, of Hunt Limousin Ranch, Oxford, NE, purchased the top-selling bred heifer.

Bob and Mary Bosch of Bosch Farms held their annual “Private Treaty Making ’Em Right”

Sale Saturday, November 28 at their farm near Indianola, Iowa. They have been raising Limousin cattle for 35 years.

Bosch Farms calve 100 head of purebred Limousin cows each year, focusing on traits that are meaningful to the commercial industry—disposition, calving-ease, and growth in an eye-appealing package.

The sale began at 10:00 a.m. with the bid-off at 2:00 p.m. When the final bid had been accepted, 21 lots sold into Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Utah.

The top-selling heifer was JGLT California Girl, a 6/1/15 black, homozygous polled daughter of JGLT Zorro 205Z out of CJSL Xtra Special 0355X. She was purchased by JLX Limousin of Elk Point, South Dakota, for $5,600.

Moser Family Farm of Morris, Minnesota, had the final bid of $5,000 on RMKR Candy Apple 508C, a 3/5/15 red, double polled daughter of Wulfs Sirloin 3172S out of RMKR Yum-Yum 104Y.

RMKR Cher 561C, a 3/29/15 black, double polled daughter of JGLT Zorro 205Z out of RMKR Miss Heritage 306N was purchased by Vorthmann Limousin of Treynor, Iowa, for $4,000.

Three bulls brought $4,500. Copper Tone, a 1/2/15 red, double polled son of SLVL Xerox 023X out of RMKR Athena 324A was purchased by Glen Roberts of Corning, Iowa.

Danny Cobb of Chariton, Iowa, took home RMKR Columbo 536C, a 3/19/15 black, double polled son of JYF Zeek 151Z out of RMKR Miss Serenity 623S.

The third $4,500 bull was RMKR Coach 567C, a 3/31/15 black, double polled son of Wulfs Xistance V638X out of RMKR Y-Fi 107Y. He was purchased by Randy Sessions of Morgan, Utah.

Volume buyers were Glen Roberts with four head and Emily Puck of Muscatine, Iowa, with three.

As a college agriculture student at Fort Hays State University, I acquire

the opportunity to tour and learn about organizations and establishments that strive to continuously move our industry forward and provide research for producers.

Touring the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC; part of the USDA Agricultural Research Service—ARS) in Clay Center, Nebraska, with my genetics class opened my eyes to upcoming opportunities their research has provided for the beef industry, and especially the Limousin breed.

USMARC was authorized by Congress in 1964 with a mission to conduct research using large populations of livestock. They are now responsible for much of the animal research that is done to improve meat quality and genetics.

Limousin cattle are used extensively in germplasm evaluation research. This research, which utilizes Limousin cattle and 17 additional cattle breeds,

is an evaluation of different germlines, or breeds.

“When it was originally conceived, six to eight breeds of sires were mated to a base female cow (usually Hereford, Angus or a maternal derived composite from USMARC) over a period of two to four years,” said Dr. Larry Kuehn, scientist at USMARC.

These two-four-year periods were termed a ‘cycle’ of the program.

The steers from these matings are harvested for growth, efficiency and carcass evaluation, and heifers are retained for several years to evaluate maternal characteristics.

“This system had a huge impact on the breeds we see in the United States today. It helped to establish

the commonly held notion that Continental breeds are faster growing with higher lean content relative to British breeds, although these notions have changed due to selection programs,” Dr. Kuehn said.

“As the system progressed, cattle producers began to give us feedback that they were more interested in how breeds were changing due to genetic selection rather than focusing on new or novel breeds that could be utilized. We have changed the program to continuous evaluation of 18 breeds (rather than cycles) to address these concerns.”

The goal of germplasm research is to develop genomic predictions of novel traits to improve selection programs

for the overall industry. USMARC hopes to have around 100 graded-up Limousin females in the project.

“Ideally, we will be able to predict Limousin specific breed and heterosis effects for all of the traits we evaluate at USMARC,” Dr. Kuehn said.

So far, scientists and producers are both pleased with the results.

“Limousin is a high-yielding breed with low fat content. While their yearling weight is a bit smaller than some of the other breeds, they seem to make much of that discrepancy up in their carcass weight, likely due to higher lean yield and dressing percentages. We have been evaluating other trait complexes such as calving-ease and feed efficiency as well.”
