2016 pREviEw: GRACE REtuRNS hiGh-powEREd offENSEThe 2015 season was a banner year for

Grace’s softball team. The Lady Lancers earned their second

straight trip to the nCCAA world Series, and Grace finished with its first 30-win season (32-27) in 21 years.

Grace’s potent bats averaged over six runs per game in 2015 under head coach heather Johnson and ranked no. 13 in the nation in hits. Grace will lean on their attack again in 2016, according to Johnson.

“Our offense puts a lot of pressure on the opposing defenses. we have an athletic, fast team which should produce a lot of runs,” Johnson said. “if we put the ball down, we can run it out. normal singles could be dou-bles, and doubles could be triples. Our goal is to put pressure on the defense.”

Grace returns 65 percent of last year’s hits and 70 percent of the team’s rBis de-spite graduating Brooke Shell, the most pro-lific offensive player in team history.

Clarissa Knight highlights Grace’s offen-sive returners. Knight earned All-American recognition in 2015 after pacing the Lady Lancers with a .425 batting average. She pounded out 76 hits, 10 doubles, 6 triples and 5 home runs with 51 rBis.

Chandler elliott and Ashley Kleinbub en-joyed strong freshman seasons in 2015 and return to add power to the middle of Grace’s lineup. elliott tied the program record with 56 rBis and hit .402; Kleinbub batted .340 with 14 extra-base hits.

Several returners will look to have en-hanced roles in 2016. hannah herbster missed time at the start of last year but re-turned to post a batting average of .415 in 46 games.

Kati Gregory platooned in the catcher position last year. But she will be leaned on heavily this spring to provide leadership be-hind the plate and to guide a crop of fresh-man catchers in Paige hlutke (wawasee hS) and emily Bobb (Seymour hS).

Sam heim practiced with the Lady Lanc-ers in 2015 but did not play as a redshirt. She will be an important addition, according to Johnson, providing a strong arm from the

mound and solid defensive range in the out-field.

infielders Brittany Turner and Brittany Melzoni and outfielder Morgan hutcheson add experience and depth to bolster Grace’s roster.

Grace’s primary question in 2016 will need to be answered on the pitching rub-ber. elliott was a workhorse as a freshman, tossing a team-high 166.2 innings while no other player topped 70.0. while elliott will likely again hurl the majority of Grace’s in-nings this spring, the Lady Lancers will need a conglomerate of arms to aid elliott.

Allison Franklin and Amanda Bowman are the only regulars to return to Grace’s bull-pen. The pair are hard throwers with experi-ence both starting and relieving. heim, han-nah england, elaina McClellan and Kyleigh Garner will hope to add depth to the pitching rotation as they gain experience. “Our pitch-ers will have to hit their spots this year. we are teaching the staff to be smart and work to minimize what hitters can do. we’ll be aggressive pitchers, but we need to grow in mental fortitude to reach our full potential,” Johnson said.

nearly half of Grace’s roster (9 of 20) will be new contributors this spring. Abby Moz-ingo has impressed in the preseason as a slap hitter and as a smart, speedy outfielder. Mariah roman and Michaela Lee have also shown flashes in training and will have opportunities to earn time as fresh-men.

The motor of the team will be driven by Grace’s two se-niors — Morgan Cody and Amanda Bowman. The se-niors, according to Johnson, are moti-vated to end their careers on a high

note. “Championships are won by seniors. Amanda [Bowman] and Morgan [Cody] pro-vide great leadership and are hard-working examples for the rest of the team. They are driven, and our team feeds off that.”

The Lady Lancers have additional incen-tive for a successful spring — sending Coach Johnson out on a high note. Johnson an-nounced before the season that 2016 will be her last with Grace, and interim associate head coach Genevieve Stoll has added more duties to share in the load.

“i would love to hang up a banner up in the rafters; that would be a nice bookend on my time here. But even more importantly, i want this program to continue growing,” Johnson said. “we have made a culture shift with Grace Softball, and i want the players to own that culture. i’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, and the Lord has blessed this program. it’s in a good position, and i want these young women to compete, fight and finish every season like it’s their last one.”

Stoll added: “The Johnsons have taken this program to a new level, creating a core culture for the program and laying the groundwork for future success. This team has worked hard to prepare for the season, and now it’s time to see the payoff. The team is very focused and cohesive.”

heather Johnson (everhart), one of the most decorated athletes in the history of Grace College, is set to start her eighth season at the helm of the softball program.

Johnson has patiently worked at rebuilding Grace’s program. The Lady Lancers had a season to remember in 2015. Grace (32-27) posted its first winning season in 18 years and eclipsed the 30-win plateau for the first time in 21 years. Grace tied a program record with 19 league wins and had two players earn All-American accolades.

The Lady Lancers experienced a breakout season in 2014, enjoying the team’s most wins (29) since 1994 and a fourth-place finish at the nCCAA national Championships. Prior to Grace’s run at the 2014 nCCAA nationals, the Lady Lancers had not reached a national tournament since 1997. The 2014 and 2015 campaigns marked the first back-to-back national tournaments in team history.

her successful recruiting has produced the best offensive talents in Lady Lancer history. Johnson, who was Grace’s first nAiA All-American in 1994, has the unique distinction of both being and coaching an All-American. Johnson’s strong recruiting pedigree can be seen in Grace’s recent revision of the record books. Of the top seven players on Grace’s career hits list, six of the Lady Lancers have played under Johnson.

in her four years playing softball at Grace, Johnson was chosen to every All-Tournament or All-Conference team that the Lancers took part in. heather reserved her spot in Lancer history by setting career records such as 783 innings pitched and 727 strikeouts. She averaged 6.5 strikeouts, per seven inning game for her career. her final pitching stats boast a career record of 86 wins, only 29 losses, and an outstand-ing career erA of 0.92 runs per game.

in her senior season, she was named an nAiA All-American and took the Lancers on their first-ever trip to the national Tournament in Columbia, Mo. during their Cinderella postseason run, Johnson and Grace picked up four victories, including a win over nAiA no. 1 ranked and no. 1-seeded Kennesaw State (44-2) of Georgia. After her senior season, heather was honored by USA Softball when she was invited to the Olympic tryouts in June 1994.

For her athletic efforts, Johnson was elected into the inaugural 2008 class of the Grace College Lancer hall of Fame. in her senior season (1994), heather set school records with 238 innings pitched, most wins in a season with 28, most strikeouts in a season with 253, and the lowest erA for a single season at 0.56 runs per game.

Upon graduation from Grace in 1994, she served under the late Coach Phil dick as an assistant softball coach on the Lancers staff for one year before taking over as the head softball coaching in the inaugural season at Montreat College in Montreat, n.C. during her first season as a head coach and the first year for the softball pro-gram in 1996, Montreat finished fourth in TVAC while knocking off four top-10 nAiA teams during the year. Johnson was named TVAC Coach of the year after going 20-26.

The Johnsons are the proud parents of three beautiful children: Grace, Taft and Mack.

ASSiStANt CoACh bRi fLANEGANBri Flanegan is set to begin her fifth season assisting Grace College’s softball program.

Flanegan was a four-year player for the Lady Lancers until her graduation in 2010.

She increased her production nearly every season in Grace’s program, culminating with 28 hits and a team-best three home runs as a senior in 2010.

Outside of the athletic realm, Flanegan was also a two-time nAiA Scholar-Athlete.

iNtERim ASSoCiAtE hEAd CoACh GENEviEvE StoLLGenevieve (Benson) Stoll continues on the Lady Lancers’ coaching ranks for her fourth season. She is fresh off a standout career in a Grace softball uniform and will serve as the interim associate head coach alongside heather Johnson.

Stoll graduated from Grace College in 2012 after playing her final three years under head coach heather Johnson.

during her time in a Lady Lancer uniform, Stoll graduated with the second-most hits in program history (128) and proved to be a steady infield defender throughout her career.

As a senior, Stoll became Grace’s first CoSidA All-district winner as a result of her athletic and academic accomplishments. She was also a two-time nAiA Scholar-Athlete.

Stoll currently works at Brandpoet, helping the marketing efforts of Grace College.

GRACE SoftbALL “fAmiLiES”An integral part of Grace College Softball are our “Families.” while no one can

replace your true family, you will always have a softball “Family” within #GCSB to help you navigate your first year and help you grow as a woman of Christ.

As a freshman entering Grace, you instantly become a “Little.” entering into

the experience of college can be challenging, especially as a student-athlete. So as a Little, you are given a “Big” (AKA - sophomore) to walk you through the pro-cess and mentor you as an individual.

Our goal is to surround you with a unique relational community, becoming your family away from home.

As you are mentored and learn the ropes of college from your Family, our goal is to grow you into a leader so that you can help a Little next year. eventually, “generations” of Bigs/Littles are formed to create a “Family” within our program.

Frankie,You are so so strong. You are strong because of the path that has brought you to this day. You have overcame some of the biggest events in a life, and you have never given up on yourself.  You stood up, and you fought.  Frankie, you fight hard for relationships. You love others so well that you will do anything to build and grow that rela-tionship.  i cannot tell you enough how admirable that is. You are a boss on the field, you take the young ducks un-der your wings and guide them, you love them, and you respect everyone.  You are such a big supporter and work hard in whatever role you have. Keep it up! i love you :)Chelsea whitesell

Commissioner Tom Seitz | www.crossroadsleague.com

The newly named Crossroads League (CL), formerly the Mid-Central College Conference, underwent a name and logo change in the summer of 2012, but its values remain the same. it is the purpose and function of the CL to promote intercollegiate ath-letics in a well-rounded athletic program. The CL seeks to main-tain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The Crossroads League is a 10-institution athletic conference in the nAiA. The CL offers 15 year round sports throughout indi-ana, Michigan and Ohio. The league will continue to be a pioneer

in academic excellence, competitive athletics and a faith-driven focus on and off the field.

The CL consists of 10 colleges and universities: Bethel College (Mishawaka, in); Goshen College (Goshen, in); Grace College (winona Lake, in); huntington University (huntington, in); indi-ana wesleyan University (Marion, in); Marian University (india-napolis, in); Mt. Morgan, MY TWIN!! Where has the time gone? It’s already your senior year, and I am so thankful for the time that we spent together at GC. I am so proud of the girl you have become. You are not the same as you were as a freshman, but God has molded you into a woman who cares deeply, whose loyalty stretches beyond all bounds, and who always sacrifices herself for the sake of

others. You are the first one to lend a hug, the first one to volunteer, and the first one to always point your friends in the right direction. Thank you for all the laughs, the jokes, the good good times. You are just an amazing woman. You work hard and

you love hard, two amazing traits. I am so proud of you! I love you Twin! #TwinNation #WeArentTwins ~Chelsea Whitesell
