the 2014 season for Grace College’s softball team was a groundbreaking one in many aspects. the Lady Lancers racked up the program’s most wins (29) since 1994, won its most league wins ever (19) and advanced to a national tournament for the first time since 1997.

Grace reached the final day of the 2014 nCCaa world series, placing fourth under head coach heather Johnson.

But there was still room for improve-ment last spring, setting the stage for what Johnson hopes will be an even more mem-orable 2015.

“i think this year is about taking an-other step forward as a program. we have the talent, ability and depth in positions to get better as the season goes on,” Johnson said. “we aren’t the underdog anymore which is a huge switch for us. this year our expectations are to pick up where we left off last year.”

Grace stumbled out of the gate last year, losing 12 of its first 16 games. But the Lady Lancers hit their collective stride after the rough start, posting a 25-18 record over the final two months of the season.

Johnson has decided to test Grace early in 2015 with a daunting nonleague schedule. the Lady Lancers will play nine games against teams either ranked or re-ceiving votes in the naia top-25 Coaches’ Preseason Poll, including a doubleheader against no. 2 william Carey on March 13.

“My philosophy is that you play the competition of the level that you want to be at. taylor and huntington were picked ahead of us in the preseason Crossroads League poll, and they both went to naia’s [last year] so we are right at the door,” Johnson said. “if your goal is to be nation-ally ranked and recognized, then you have to play teams at that level.”

For Grace to reach its potential in 2015, the squad will look to its senior all-amer-ican Brooke shell. the speedy outfielder was First team nCCaa all-american and

honorable mention for naia all-american in 2014, setting three single-season re-cords including most hits (94), most runs (64) and most stolen bases (38) in team history.

shell already sits at first place among Grace’s career leaders in stolen bases with 59 and is poised to become the program’s career hits leader. she has 171 hits entering the season and needs 29 more to pass ol-ivia winget for first place.

“every time i fill out my lineup card, there is one position i know every time – Brooke shell at leadoff,” Johnson said. “she sets the pace and competitive course for our team. she’s hard on herself, and her teammates now have that same drive. she wants to go out with a bang as a senior.”

Joining shell’s offensive prowess is a potent lineup. sophomore Clarissa Knight set a single-season record with 56 rBis as a freshman and batted .386. hannah ad-ams (.311) and samantha Johnson (.301) also return for their sophomore seasons.

Freshmen Kati Gregory, who originally signed to play at the university of evans-ville, and hannah herbster add a pair of powerful bats to Grace’s lineup. herbster batted .690 as a senior at LaVille high school, ranking third in the state for bat-ting average.

Grace’s offense tied for sixth in the Crossroads League last year with 5.1 runs/game. But Johnson is hoping the Lady Lanc-ers’ offense transforms into a formidable force in 2015 with its new additions.

“in the past, we couldn’t afford to make mistakes on defense because we weren’t scoring runs. But this year we just want to be frustrating to teams,” Johnson said. “i don’t think we rely on one area this

year. we aren’t all power, all slappers or all contact hitters, but we’re trying to put all of that together and have a lot of offensive weapons to throw at teams.”

adams and freshman Chandler elliott are expected to anchor Grace’s pitching ro-tation this year. adams posted a 2.54 era in 17 league games. alex shipley (3.20 era), amanda Bowman and allison Franklin pro-vided much-needed experience and depth to the pitching rotation, and herbster also looks to earn innings on the mound.

Brittany Melzoni, Chelsea whitesell, Morgan Cody, Morgan hutcheson and Mari-beth strong all return from last year’s post-season run at the nCCaa world series. and Johnson has revamped Grace’s lineup with talented freshmen ashley Kleinbub, Brit-tany turner, herbster, elliott and Gregory.

while Grace is hoping for growth on the diamond this spring, Johnson is excited for the personal growth she’s witnessed al-ready within the Lady Lancers.

“this team has really grown off the field as much as they have on the field. they are growing in their spiritual lives and in their relationships with one another,” Johnson said. “i’m excited for what this team can do physically, but their love for one another and commitment to the team excites me even more.”

heather Johnson (everhart), one of the most decorated athletes in the history of Grace College, is set to start her sixth season at the helm of the softball program.

Johnson has patiently worked at rebuilding Grace’s program. the Lady Lancers experienced a break-out season in 2014, enjoying the team’s most wins (29) since 1994 and a fourth-place finish at the nCCaa national Championships. Prior to Grace’s run at the 2014 nCCaa nationals, the Lady Lancers had not reached a national tournament since 1997.

her successful recruiting has produced the program’s all-time leader in hits (olivia winget) and the program’s second naia all-american in school history (Brooke shell). Johnson, who was Grace’s first naia all-american in 1994, has the unique distinction of both being and coaching an all-american. Johnson’s strong recruiting pedigree can be seen in Grace’s recent revision of the record books. of the top six players on Grace’s career hits list, five of the Lady Lancers have played under Johnson.

in her four years playing softball at Grace, Johnson was chosen to every all-tournament or all-Conference team that the Lancers took part in. heather reserved her spot in Lancer history by setting career records such as 783 innings pitched and 727 strikeouts. she averaged 6.5 strikeouts, per seven inning game for her career. her final pitching stats boast a career record of 86 wins, only 29 losses, and an outstand-ing career era of 0.92 runs per game.

in her senior season, she was named an naia all-american and took the Lancers on their first-ever trip to the national tournament in Columbia, Mo. during their Cinderella postseason run, Johnson and Grace picked up four victories, including a win over naia no. 1 ranked and no. 1-seeded Kennesaw state (44-2) of Georgia. after her senior season, heather was honored by usa softball when she was invited to the olympic tryouts in June 1994.

For her athletic efforts, Johnson was elected into the inaugural 2008 class of the Grace College Lancer hall of Fame. in her senior season (1994), heather set school records with 238 innings pitched, most wins in a season with 28, most strikeouts in a season with 253, and the lowest era for a single season at 0.56 runs per game.

upon graduation from Grace in 1994, she served under the late Coach Phil dick as an assistant softball coach on the Lancers staff for one year before taking over as the head softball coaching in the inaugural season at Montreat College in Montreat, n.C. during her first season as a head coach and the first year for the softball program in 1996, Montreat finished fourth in tVaC while knocking off four top-10 naia teams during the year. Johnson was named tVaC Coach of the year after going 20-26.

in 1997 Johnson moved to nCaa div. ii Lenoir-rhyne in hickory, n.C. she served on the volleyball staff for one year before getting into administration where she com-pleted her master’s degree in business administration and served as the director of facilities. in 2001 Johnson returned to coaching at her alma mater, northwest high school in Canal Fulton, ohio, as the head softball coach. Johnson directed the soft-ball program at northwest from 2001-05, taking over a struggling program that went 6-19 during her first year at the helm. in 2003 they went 12-12 and in 2004 the team finished 17-9 while advancing to the school’s first regional championship.

the Johnsons are the proud parents of three beautiful children: Grace, taft and Mack.

ASSiStANt CoACh jAy johNSoNJay Johnson arrived at Grace after residing in Canal Fulton, ohio. as a business owner and former pharmaceutical sales rep, Johnson brings a high level of ambition and professionalism to the program. Johnson will take an aggres-sive approach toward recruiting which will be a primary focus for returning Lancer softball back to a championship program. along with recruiting, Johnson will oversee strength and conditioning, outfielders, hitting and individual skills improvement.

the Johnsons coached together at northwest high school where Jay’s primary responsibilities included instructing hitting, catching and outfield. Johnson was also the strength and conditioning coach for Lenoir-rhyne university’s

volleyball team and assisted heather in her second season as head coach of Montreat College’s softball team in north Carolina.

while earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration/marketing, Johnson played four years and was a two-time all-Conference standout outfielder for Montreat College.

ASSiStANt CoACh BRi fLANEGANBri Flanegan is set to begin her fourth season assisting Grace College’s softball program.

Flanegan was a four-year player for the Lady Lancers until her graduation in 2010.

she increased her production nearly every season in Grace’s program, culminating with 28 hits and a team-best three home runs as a senior in 2010.

outside of the athletic realm, Flanegan was also a two-time naia scholar-athlete.

ASSiStANt CoACh GENEviEvE StoLLGenevieve (Benson) stoll joins the Lady Lancers’ coaching ranks fresh off a standout career in a Grace softball uni-form. stoll graduated from Grace College in 2012 after playing her final three years under Coach Johnson.

during her time in a Lady Lancer uniform, stoll graduated with the second-most hits in program history (128) and proved to be a steady infield defender throughout her career. as a senior, stoll became Grace’s first Cosida all-district winner as a result of her athletic and academic accomplishments. she was also a two-time naia academic all-american.

stoll currently works at BrandPoet, helping the marketing efforts of Grace College.

ASSiStANt CoACh tiffANy fEAthERStoNtiffany Featherston joins the Lady Lancers’ coaching staff for the first time in 2015. she was a four-year starter for Grace’s softball team until her graduation in 2014.

Featherston improved every year under Coach Johnson’s watch, batting .135 as a freshman and .324 as a senior. she graduated no. 5 on Grace’s career hits list. her senior season was Grace’s finest season in nearly two decades. the Lady Lancers finished the 2014 campaign with 29 wins (most since 1994) and a fourth-place finish at the nCCaa national Championships.

Watching you grow from a little girl to the wonderful, thoughtful, and caring person you are today has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I am so proud of you.Love, Mom

Sam,As I’ve watched you grow from a little stinker to a beautiful woman, from beginning to learn how to tumble to balancing on a 4-inch wide beam, and from a small gymnast to an all around athlete, I’ve seen you learn how to take life’s tumbles and continue to walk down God’s narrow path. I couldn’t be more proud of you. Let no one define who you are or speak of what you are. Let your voice always speak for you. Looking forward to seeing you move forward to great success in your endeavors this year. Love you.Your biggest fan, Grandpa

Sam, You are an amazing person with a beautiful heart. We are so thankful and feel blessed that our paths have crossed and we get to know you. Best of luck to you and the Lady Lancers this season. We are praying for health and safety for all of you.Love, The Mitzelfelt Family

Good luck, Sam! Go Lady Lancers!
