grace’s baseball team has an optimistic outlook toward the spring season, due in large part to a core of upperclassman lead-ership.

grace, who finished 14-31 a year ago, mixes experienced starters with an influx of talented newcomers for the 2016 sea-son.

The team’s mission under head coach Bill Barr hinges on Colossians 3:23-24 — focusing on doing everything as a team for the glory of god rather than for men. The Lancers are dedicated on building a broth-erhood that fulfills that mission daily, start-ing with the team’s captains and working down to the freshmen.

“Every team and season is different. But this team stands out in how they have bought into our mission. They have taken ownership for their personal responsibility and understand the importance of com-mitting to the process,” Barr said. “Based on their work ethic and level of commit-ment to the program, this group will take their talent as far as it will carry them. Our expectations are pretty high that we’ll be improved in every aspect of the game.”

Centering the squad is the leadership core of seniors Frank rocchio and Wesley gensch and juniors Austin green and Lo-gan grigsby. rocchio was the Crossroads League batting champion in 2015 after hit-ting .405 for the season. He has “made a huge impact” on the team, in Barr’s words, and has earned the respect of his team-mates for his work ethic and vocal leader-ship.

gensch, green and grigsby have each “contributed mightily to the growth and commitment level of the team.” All three have experience on the mound and will be

counted on to produce in 2016.The Lancers’ pitching will be led by a

number of new arms. Blake Converset, a junior transfer from indiana Tech, has established himself as grace’s ace in pre-season. Freshmen Xavier Harris and Scot-tie Clark will join junior Jason Stevens to round out grace’s starting rotation. Harris was the Ohio division iii player of the Year as a senior at Mount gilead High School.

Also returning to the bullpen are gensch, green, grigsby, Joe dougherty and CJ Swartz. Freshman Aaron Voirol may also see time on the mound or in the out-field. The pitching staff consists of strong competitors who know how to handle pressure, according to Barr.

Behind the mound, the Lancers’ de-fense aims to improve its execution and speed. Barr credited first-year assistant coach Cam Screeton for preparing the de-fense.

The outfield will likely include several newcomers. Shay Hepler, a junior trans-fer from Ancilla College, has impressed in centerfield, and Jakob radjenovich, Hunter Ackerman and Harris add enhanced speed to the squad. William Swisher and Chase Baker both earned starts during their freshman campaigns, adding experience and depth to the position.

“Our defense takes pride in improving every day. We will have to field the ball to be successful, and the guys are ready for the challenge,” Barr said. “Cam [Screeton] has done a great job preparing the de-fense, and the team has bought into what we are doing.”

Barr maintains that grace’s bats will be improved and more balanced than in pre-vious seasons. rocchio boasts the biggest

bat among returners after hitting .405 as a junior with 11 doubles and 24 rBis. green drove in 17 runs in 2015, often starting as a designated hitter.

“We will have more power at the plate this year, but we will also be deeper across the lineup. it will be hard for teams to pitch around us from no. 1-9.”

From top to bottom, from pitching to batting to defense, Barr believes the Lanc-ers have improved in the offseason. The squad is more cohesive than ever and is grounded on a deeper calling than simply running the basepaths.

“This is a close-knit unit. We have strong leadership which starts with our captains, and the guys should be commended for the coachability they have demonstrated,” Barr said. “Their commitment and desire has defined them through the preseason. They are playing with courage and deter-mination and are on a mission.”

Barr has tremendous coaching experience at the collegiate level, amassing 309 career coaching wins. in 2014 the Lancers clinched a spot in the Crossroads League Tournament for the first time in recent memory. grace earned three players on the All-League Team in the process.

Barr came to grace from Alderson-Broaddus College in philippi, W.V., where he experienced much success over two years as head baseball coach.

Overall, Barr’s résumé includes 25 years of experience coaching baseball, including 17 at the col-legiate level, and seven years of experience as an athletic director.

in Barr’s first season coaching Alderson-Broaddus in 2010, he directed the Battlers to one of their most successful seasons in program history.

Alderson-Broaddus, an nCAA division ii school, was expected to finish fourth in their division of the West Virginia intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WViAC), but Barr guided the team to its first division title in school history and a 27-14 overall record.

Barr was named the WViAC Coach of the Year as a result, and the Battlers were ranked in the top 10 of the national Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for the Atlantic region during the season.

prior to his work at Alderson-Broaddus, Barr coached the baseball team at Oklahoma Wesleyan university from 2005-09.

in the year before Barr arrived at Oklahoma Wesleyan, the team finished 4-51. in Barr’s final season at Oklahoma Wesleyan, the team broke the school record for wins with a 29-26 season. Barr also nearly doubled the baseball roster during his tenure.

Barr, who is nearing 300 career wins as a head coach at the collegiate level, had a successful stint at indiana Wesleyan university. Overall, Barr took the Wildcats to four consecutive appearances in the nCCAA national Tournament and set the school record for wins when the team finished 32-21 in 1994.

While at indiana Wesleyan, his teams averaged 22 wins per season, and he was awarded as an nAiA district Coach of the Year twice and an nCCAA regional Coach of the Year twice.

Barr graduated from Mount Vernon nazarene university with a Bachelor of Arts in physical Education in 1983 then went on to obtain a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Ashland university in 1992.

Barr is married to Jacki, and the couple has two daughters named Bethany and Brittany.

Commissioner Tom Seitz | www.crossroadsleague.com

The newly named Crossroads League (CL), formerly the Mid-Central College Conference, underwent a name and logo change in the summer of 2012, but its values remain the same. it is the purpose and function of the CL to promote intercollegiate ath-letics in a well-rounded athletic program. The CL seeks to main-tain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The Crossroads League is a 10-institution athletic conference in the nAiA. The CL offers 15 year round sports throughout indi-ana, Michigan and Ohio. The league will continue to be a pioneer

in academic excellence, competitive athletics and a faith-driven focus on and off the field.

The CL consists of 10 colleges and universities: Bethel College (Mishawaka, in); goshen College (goshen, in); grace College (Winona Lake, in); Huntington university (Huntington, in); indi-ana Wesleyan university (Marion, in); Marian university (india-napolis, in); Mt. Vernon nazarene university (Mount Vernon, OH); university of St. Francis (Fort Wayne, in); Spring Arbor university (Spring Arbor, Mi); and Taylor university (upland, in).
