2015 pREviEw: GRACE BASEBALL to foCuS oN thE pRoCESS

The 2015 season will be as much about the journey as the destination for Grace’s baseball team.

The process of building a champion-ship contender under head coach Bill Barr took another step last spring. The Lancers seemed to peak late in the season, winning 12 games in the Crossroads League season. Grace also qualified for the Crossroads League Tournament for the first time in re-cent memory.

But becoming a nationally recognized program doesn’t happen overnight. It hap-pens one practice and one pitch at a time, according to Barr. He hopes the Lancers will be defined by hard work, consistency and a resolution to overcome adversity.

“This is the most focused team I’ve had. They’ve been very coachable, and they work hard. I’m hoping we can play as a team and that we focus on doing the little things really well,” Barr said. “If we follow the process of playing Grace Baseball and get our focus off the wins and losses, we will have a successful season. If we are consistent each day with our approach to practice and games, it will lead us to our ultimate objective which is winning base-ball games.”

Grace won’t rely on one or two players this season with a balanced lineup. How-ever, the Lancers will need to replace the run production from Jacob Bloom, who finished his sterling Lancer career ranked in the top 10 in seven offensive categories.

Barr believes Grace will be a hard team to scout thanks to its steady contribution from 1-9 in the batting order. “We don’t have those one or two guys to focus on and pitch around in our lineup,” he com-mented. Aaron Christenberry returns the biggest bat to Grace’s lineup with eight extra-base hits and 13 RBIs as a freshman.

On the mound, Grace boasts an impres-sive arsenal of pitching talent. Barr has the luxury of being able to start a number of Lancers this spring, including returners Tim Weber, Austin Green, Joe Dougherty, Lo-gan Grigsby, CJ Swartz and Jason Stevens as well as Goshen College transfer Alex Mosbarger. Each pitcher brings a unique blend of speed, control and movement that should make opposing hitters think twice at the plate.

Green and Weber each tossed over 30 innings last year, and Swartz posted a 3.57 ERA against CL opponents.

“We’re deeper than we’ve been in the past. We have arms in our bullpen that can spot start and do a good job in relief,” Barr said. “Everyone has different games based on how they throw, and I think we can re-ally cause other teams to have fits.”

Behind the Lancers’ pitching rotation will be a much-improved defense this spring. After finishing seventh in 2014 in team fielding percentage, the Lancers have spent much of the offseason improving their defensive techniques. While pitching and offense can vary from game to game, Barr is hoping Grace can provide a consis-tent defensive effort each day.

Jared Lemler was Grace’s starting catcher in 2014 as a freshman and is poised for a breakout year in 2015. According to Barr, Lemler is “exactly what you need be-hind the plate. He is a leader who under-stands the game, is trusted by the pitching staff and works closely with the coaching staff to manage the game.”

Paul Blankley was Grace’s starting shortstop for much of his freshman season, but he will be making the switch to center field as a sophomore. Swartz also provides a crucial role for the Lancers defensively with the versatility to play nearly any posi-

tion on the diamond. Freshmen Noah Fol-lett and Colton Ferrand also figure to start defensively for Grace.

“We have to be pretty balanced this year. We don’t have a team who will domi-nate any one aspect of the game, but we’ll need to play good defense to carry us. That’s one of the controllables that we can manage,” Barr said.

Leading Grace’s team is the senior class of Brook Vosler, Matt Morgart, Weber and Tim Young. The seniors, along with junior Frank Rocchio, have provided a source of leadership and vision for the team.

Barr has organized a challenging non-league schedule with the hopes of getting Grace better prepared for the Crossroads League season. “The Lord has definitely had his hand on putting this program to-gether. We’ve got challenges like we do any year, but I like where we are as a team. We’re energized and working hard,” Barr said. “We still enjoy coming to practice and getting better every day. If we focus on the process and take advantage of each opportunity to get better, the results will come.”

Bill Barr is set for his third year at Grace College, serving as the Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director.

Barr has tremendous coaching experience at the collegiate level, amassing 295 career coaching wins. In 2014 the Lancers clinched a spot in the Crossroads League Tournament for the first time in recent memory. Grace earned three players on the All-League Team in the process.

Barr came to Grace from Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, W.V., where he experienced much success over two years as head baseball coach.

Overall, Barr’s résumé includes 24 years of experience coaching baseball, including 16 at the col-legiate level, and seven years of experience as an athletic director.

In Barr’s first season coaching Alderson-Broaddus in 2010, he directed the Battlers to one of their most successful seasons in program history.

Alderson-Broaddus, an NCAA Division II school, was expected to finish fourth in their division of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), but Barr guided the team to its first division title in school history and a 27-14 overall record.

Barr was named the WVIAC Coach of the Year as a result, and the Battlers were ranked in the top 10 of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for the Atlantic Region during the season.

Prior to his work at Alderson-Broaddus, Barr coached the baseball team at Oklahoma Wesleyan University from 2005-09.

In the year before Barr arrived at Oklahoma Wesleyan, the team finished 4-51. In Barr’s final season at Oklahoma Wesleyan, the team broke the school record for wins with a 29-26 season. Barr also nearly doubled the baseball roster during his tenure.

Barr, who is nearing 300 career wins as a head coach at the collegiate level, had a successful stint at Indiana Wesleyan University. Overall, Barr took the Wildcats to four consecutive appearances in the NCCAA National Tournament and set the school record for wins when the team finished 32-21 in 1994.

While at Indiana Wesleyan, his teams averaged 22 wins per season, and he was awarded as an NAIA District Coach of the Year twice and an NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year twice.

Barr graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education in 1983. He then went on to obtain a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Ashland University in 1992.

Barr is married to Jacki, and the couple has two daughters named Bethany and Brittany.

The newly named Crossroads League (CL), formerly the Mid-Central College Conference, underwent a name and logo change in the summer of 2012, but its values remain the same. It is the purpose and function of the CL to promote intercollegiate ath-letics in a well-rounded athletic program. The CL seeks to main-tain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The Crossroads League is a 10-institution athletic conference in the NAIA. The CL offers 15 year round sports throughout Indi-ana, Michigan and Ohio. The league will continue to be a pioneer

in academic excellence, competitive athletics and a faith-driven focus on and off the field.

The CL consists of 10 colleges and universities: Bethel College (Mishawaka, IN); Goshen College (Goshen, IN); Grace College (Winona Lake, IN); Huntington University (Huntington, IN); Indi-ana Wesleyan University (Marion, IN); Marian University (India-napolis, IN); Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, OH); University of St. Francis (Fort Wayne, IN); Spring Arbor University (Spring Arbor, MI); and Taylor University (Upland, IN).
