...is a peaceful little town that less than 300 peoplecall home. It’s one of the last stops on SR-903 astravelers head west to visit recreational sites such
as Speelyi Beach on Lake Cle Elum, Salmon La Sac and the many vacation rentalhomes in between. Ronald offers year round recreational activities with sprawlingmountainsides to snowmobile on in the winter and swimming, fishing and boat-ing opportunities within easy reach during the summer. Within the town itself aretwo of the state’s oldest landmarks: the old Ronald School and Hawthorne Hall, which host several events each year like the Halloween Haunted House.
RONALD...is a town without equal. With even amounts offriendly folks and entertainment on hand, there’s alittle bit of something for anybody. It grew out of a
history of coal mining and now is a portal for a wealth of outdoor recreation, aspirited nightlife and a variety of stores that offer everything from bicycles tobeer growlers. Keep your eyes peeled for special events throughout the year aswell as for some fun sightseeing such as the massive mural of Marlon Brandopainted on the only movie theater in the area.
ROSLYN
... is another old town withplenty of history and is ashort drive across the
Yakima River from Cle Elum. It has a couple of parks to relax in, including the IronHorse State Park, which features the historic Milwaukee Road train facilities at theSouth Cle Elum Depot. The park also features an ADA-accessible trail that tells thestory of how the railroad helped develop the town and the surrounding area. Anew feature along South Cle Elum Way since fall 2015 (the road between Cle Elumand South Cle Elum) is a colorful mural depicting an underwater scene from thenearby river complete with several different species of salmon by artist Don Brown.

THORPor “Rodeo City” as many like to call it, wasonce intended to be the capitol ofWashington State, but now it’s known
for its world class Timothy Hay, Central Washington University campus and ofcourse, the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair held every Labor Dayweekend. The historic downtown district offers a huge variety of stores andrestaurants – some housed in buildings older than the state itself - and featuresseveral street festivals over the summer such as Jazz in the Valley.

Twice a year in the spring then summer, Tony Davey, an artist and owner ofFused art gallery in Roslyn, carefully crafts then hides small, rectangularglass ornaments all around town and asks locals and visitors to do theirbest to find them. Davey said it’s just a way to get people more interestedin exploring his town. “It’s just to kind of encourage people to hang aroundtown, look around a little bit more and open their eyes to a bunch ofthings,” he explained. “It’s something to really have fun with.” The piecescome in a wide variety of colors and are decorated with the word ‘Roslyn’in stylized text along with the date to remind people of their stay in town.If you spot one of these ornaments, it’s yours to keep – Roslyn’s gift to you.Besides getting people to explore the city, Davey also hopes seeing andfinding the ornaments gets people inspired to create their own art, espe-cially at his shop where he teaches glass art.

Traditionally, Cle Elum’s Carpenter House Museum has focused on the Carpenter family, in-cluding Frank Carpenter, a mayor of Cle Elum who built the house in 1914, but on July 4, 2015,the society opened an all-new exhibit on the third floor to widen its scope and feature more ofthe local community’s history, including the Prohibition, early pioneers, businesses, education, transportation, the fires of 1891 and 1918 and Cle Elum’s red light district.
The rest of the museum has plenty to offer, as well. Visitors can examine the Carpenter family’sclothing, furniture, books, paintings, dinnerware and many other artifacts that have been pre-served “in their natural habitat” since 1989 when the last surviving Carpenter descendant donatedthe home and its furnishings to the society.

Foundingmembers of the SummitSki Club (later known asthe Cle Elum Ski Club)started the organizationto teach area youngpeople how to ski. Theywanted to promote thearea's wonderland ofwinter sports too. Clubmembers made their ownskis because there wereno local places to buy skiequipment at that time.

Once known as ‘A Skier’s Paradise’, the region hosted a popular ski jumpcompetition in the 1920s through the early 1930s. Charlene Kauzlarich of the local historical society places a primitive set of skis and a pair of ski boots oncebelonging to Hans Iverson, who loved the Cle Elum area he made his home in the1920s because it reminded him of his home back in Norway. He was a ski "yumper"in the old country and happy that he could continue doing so here. These are a fewof the antiquities and photos on display at the museum. Jim Fossett photo

Traveling along the back roads of Kittitas County you’ll find over 100barns and other significant buildings (some dating back over a century)decorated with large, painted wooden quilt blocks – often inspired by afamily heirloom quilt. The collection comprises one of the county’s mostpopular trails. A beautiful trail map is available at Chamber of Commercevisitor centers in Ellensburg and Cle Elum and at local museums. A bioon each site gives those taking the self-guided driving tour a glimpseinto the significance of the chosen quilt block. The map also provides alook at area events, the names of the 24 volunteers who helped hangthe quilts, names of sponsors and a list of historical buildings in the re-gion with photographs of each. All totaled, to prepare and hang over 100quilts and produce the map, this grass-roots folk-art project requiredover 12,000 hours of volunteer work. Roslyn Cemetery, nestled in the hills above Roslyn, is a reflection of therich ethnic mix of people who settled in the region beginning around1886. Clustered serenely on 15 acres of woods and hills are 26 separatecemeteries. Since 1887, land was donated by or was purchased from theNorthern Pacific by fraternal ethnic and civic organizations for burial oftheir deceased members. At least 24 nationalities are represented withinthe nearly 5,000 graves. The cemeteries were listed on the National HistoricRegister in 1978. Burial customs from those countries can be observedtoday. Many graves seem to be above the ground due to the placement ofcurbings. Footstones are common, placed with the hope that in more afflu-ent times a headstone could be purchased and erected. The ornate and pic-turesque fences around some plots were originally erected to protect thesite from foraging cattle and wildlife. The Italians and Yugoslavians, especially, used elaborate markers: Icons of the departed, pictures encased in ceramicand embedded in the tombstones were used quite frequently. A newermethod of adding a likeness of the deceased to the stone is photo etching. There are several fine examples of this in the Memorial Garden section of thecemeteries. In part, the uniqueness of Roslyn’s historical cemeteries is that for most sections perpetualcare existed only as long as the participating organizations of families were around. In recent years, volunteers have expended thousands of hours to maintain and beautify the grounds.
The Central Cascades tend to get windy, especially the further east you travel through the Kittitas County Valley, and Puget Sound En-ergy decided to take advantage of that by building the second largest wind farm in the state between Kittitas and Vantage in thehills above the Vantage Highway. The Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility isn’t just massive in scale, with the capacity to generate 273megawatts, but it’s also unique in that it allows tours and other recreational activities throughout spring, summer and fall betweenApril 1 and Nov. 15. Special tours during the winter months are available by calling 509-925-3131 if you’re not one of the 18,000 visitorsthe center hosts every season. The tour gives you an up close and personal look at the 221 feet high, 104 ton towers. You get to goright inside one during the daily tour and also get to peek at some of the internal components that make them tick with the conven-ience of standing firmly on the ground. Besides tours, PSE also offers special events and even grants written permission to hike, birdwatch, ride horses and take part in other non-hunting recreational activities between April 1 and Nov. 30. Hunting is allowed with aspecial reservation from the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife at wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/hunting_access/private_lands/type/56/.More information on the Wild Horse facility is available at pse.com/inyourcommunity/ToursandRecreation/WildHorse
