METHODOLOGY
Count and Survey Methodology
Pedestrian Traffic Counts
Counted: Pedestrians and people in wheelchairs.
Not counted: Bicyclists, skateboarders; children too small to walk.
Pedestrians had to cross over the reference point where counter was stationed.
Each pass of a pedestrian was counted. Someone crossing by a counter twice was counted twice.
Both sides of the street counted.
Pedestrian Surveying
Interviewers chose pedestrians at random, walking within half a block of the location.
Response Rate: 8%. This means 12 people had to be approached to gain 1 completed survey (11 of 12 said “No”).
Margin of error for a sample size of 598 is ±4.0% at the 95% confidence level.
Time to complete: Average of 7 minutes.
Incentive: None.
Most interviewing was conducted on the move, walking beside busy pedestrians.

Reason for Being in Downtown
Half of the 2016 respondents surveyed were in Downtown either for work or
school. There were fewer workers than in 2010 and 2012 indicating people
are in Downtown for more diverse reasons.
