Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Taylor Furlough enters his fifth season at the helm of the Chowan Uni-
versity baseball program. The Hawks finished the 2014-2015 season
with a 21-20 overall record and 9-7 finish in CIAA play with several
team members earning honors. Three players were selected for the All
-CIAA Team, two for the All-Tournament Team, one for the NCBWA
All-Region First Team, and one for the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA DII Sec-
ond Team All-Region.
In the 2013-14 season Chowan finished with an 18-26 overall record
and 15-5 finish in CIAA play with several players earning CIAA acco-
lades. Two players earned First Team honors, three were tabbed to
the All-CIAA Second Team, and three garnered All-Rookie recognition,
highlighted by Tanner Woods earning Rookie of the Year honors.
In his second season as head coach, Furlough guided the Hawks to a 21-
27 overall record, and second place finish at the CIAA Champion-
ship. Under Furlough’s direction, the Hawks had two players named to
the CIAA All-Rookie Team, a CIAA Second Team selection, and four
players named to the CIAA All-Tournament Team.
In his first season Furlough led the Hawks to a 25-23 record. Prior to
being named head coach, Furlough served as an assistant coach under
Aaron Carroll. In Furlough's first season as assistant coach (2008),
he helped the Hawks to the most successful season in program history
after posting a 36-20 record. That season, Chowan garnered a
NCCAA South Region Championship and finished in fourth place at the
NCCAA National Championship Tournament.
In 2011, Furlough helped Chowan gain their sixth winning season in the
last seven years. Furlough worked with the Hawks pitching staff and
helped produce All-CIAA performers Brett Garrett, Ryan Moore, and
John DesChamps in 2011.
Furlough is no stranger to the Chowan baseball program after playing
four seasons under Aaron Carroll. As part of the pitching staff in 2005,
he helped the Hawks to an appearance at the NCCAA World Se-
ries. That same season, Furlough posted a team-low 1.20 ERA with a 4
-1 record and five saves. Furlough then spent two seasons on the
Chowan football staff as an offensive backs and wide receivers coach
prior to being hired by Carroll in January of 2008.
Furlough is a native of Columbia, North Carolina and was a standout
football and baseball player at Columbia High School. He received his
B.A. in Mathematics from Chowan in 2005. He is married to Stephanie
Myane Furlough, a 2008 Chowan graduate. The two have one daugh-
ter, Lennox, and they reside in Murfreesboro.

Bryan Hill enters his fifth season as the Hawks' top assistant baseball coach. However, Hill is no stranger to Chowan University. Hill spent four years as a starting pitcher and outfielder for the Hawks (2005-2009) and spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant under then-Head Coach Aaron Carroll. As a player for Chowan, Hill holds the career record for innings pitched (267.1). In 2006, Hill was named to the All NCCAA South Region Team as a left-handed pitcher. Hill graduated from Chowan in May of 2009 and worked locally as a personal trainer for one year. He volunteered as the Hawks' strength and condi-tioning coach and helped the team with day-to-day field coaching for the 2009-2010 season. Af-ter one season, Hill left to pursue coaching full time as an assistant coach at Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tennessee. At JSCC, Hill served as the Strength and Condition-ing Coach for the Athletic Department and as the baseball team's pitching coach. Hill has worked several baseball camps over his coaching career. While working with members of the pitching staff, Hill has guided five players to earn All-CIAA recognition. He has also been a part of two CIAA Championship game appearanc-es. He remains active in developing student-athletes throught the Coastal Plain League in the sum-mer. Chowan University stands in the old
Albemarle region of North
Carolina between the Roanoke and
Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner
of the state. The Murfreesboro area was
first settled during the sixteenth and sev-
enteenth centuries, when the principal
inhabitants were several
Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.
Today, the stately old homes seem to
whisper of the storied colonial and an-
tebellum days.
Murfreesboro is located approximately
60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120
miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Murfreesboro is the location of the
boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed, dis-
coverer of the cure for yellow fever, and
home to Richard Jordan Gatling, the in-
ventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours and
special events are offered
throughout the year by local groups.
