Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Melanie Chaussee enters her second season on staff at Chowan University. After serving as an assistant coach following the 2014 season, Chausee currently serves as Interim Head Volleyball Coach. Chaussee competed for the Chowan University volley-ball team for two seasons. She was an integral part of the team’s 2014 CIAA Northern Division title and CIAA Championship. Chaussee earned All-CIAA recogni-tion, Atlantic Regional All-Tournament Team recogni-tion and NCCSIA All-State honors her senior year while tallying 334 season kills and 61 blocks (eight so-lo, 53 assisted) for the Blue and White. She graduated in December 2014 with a degree in In-terdisciplinary Studies.

Prior to attending Chowan, Chaussee earned an Asso-ciate’s degree from Johnson County Community Col-lege in Overland Park, Kansas. She served as a stu-dent athletic trainer during her two years there. The Lawrence, Kansas native currently resides in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Chowan University stands in the

old Albemarle region of North

Carolina between the Roanoke and

Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner

of the state. The Murfreesboro area

was first settled during the sixteenth

and seventeenth centuries, when the

principal inhabitants were several
