In 2016, we celebrated our 15 year anniversary as an organization dedicated to

making every building a green building because we know that GREEN

BUILDINGS ARE BETTER . . . better for people, better for the environment, and

better for the bottom line. In honor of this milestone, our interactive Green

Buildings Are Better display visited 35 of our members, sponsors, and partners

collecting your “Green Buildings Are Better” comments. We are excited to share

a few comments below, along with highlights of our work in 2016.

Green Buildings are better because “45% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions

come from residential and commercial building operations—every green

building counts!”

We addressed building energy use and emissions through our benchmarking

efforts. In 2016, we held 3 Benchmarking Jams, where our volunteers assisted

over 30 building owners benchmark their energy use. We also assisted the City of

St. Louis with a successful City Energy Project grant and the introduction of the

Building Energy Awareness ordinance. This ordinance (which passed in January

2017) requires buildings 50,000 square feet and above to track and report

energy and water use annually.

Green Buildings are better because

“they cost less to operate.”

Through our on-going educational

programs, we provide opportunities

to learn about cutting edge green

& sustainable technology,

strategies, and more, In 2016, 25

unique educational events

reached over 1,650 individuals.

Green Buildings are better because

“green buildings are healthy buildings.”

We work towards healthier buildings & spaces with

our community partners. In 2016, we helped

Thomas Dunn Learning Center towards a better

building with a volunteer-led Green Building Plan

Builder workshop. Our Emerging Professionals

organized days of service with EarthDance Farms

and Energy Care. In addition, we highlighted the WELL Building System, a new

rating system that supports health and well-being in the built environment, at a

monthly evening program and an in-depth seminar.

Green Buildings are better because

“they help build a sustainable future.”

We look towards the future with our Green

Schools Quest. 2,400 participants in 45 school

-mentor teams impacted nearly 25,000

individuals with their sustainability projects!

Vision: To create and restore

buildings and communities that will

regenerate and sustain the health

and vitality of all life within a

generation.

Mission: To initiate, develop and

accelerate implementation of

green building concepts,

technologies and principles

that promote environmentally

responsible, prosperous and healthy

places to live, work, and learn.

Thanks to all our Volunteers, Members, Donors, and Sponsors for a successful 2016!

“USGBC-Missouri Gateway has been

an invaluable resource and

advocate as we have worked to

make our buildings greener,

educate our staff, and benchmark

our communities. From providing

educational and continuing

education opportunities to hosting a

benchmarking jam for our staff to

learn how to use ENERGY STAR

Portfolio Manager, the Missouri

Gateway Chapter demonstrates how

an organization can be a partner to

its members and supporters”

“[The Green Schools Quest] is one of

the greatest local resources available

to enable positive change to occur,

for our current and future

generations. It's truly at the heart of

being a sustainable school system.

The aspect of the Quest . . . I enjoy is

the connectivity to our community.

Through the Quest, I've been able

make and foster connections with

local community members that I

otherwise would never have been

able to engage with.”

Financials / Fiscal Year 2016

In addition to the above support, we also benefited from the kind

support of 130 volunteers who contributed 3,500 hours of their time

and talent in 2016. Volunteers are our greatest renewable resource!

“Participating in the Green Schools

Quest gave our recycling club a

clear and impactful goal, and

inspired us to truly outdo our

own expectations. We can't wait to

compete again next year, with an

even greater motivation to better

our school, and our earth!”

“[USGBC’s Emerging Professionals] were

given a great opportunity to lead a group

of members in an annual day of

service. The goal was to look for a way to

leverage our unique talents while

providing value for EarthDance Farms in

support of the work that they do. Our

team really came together, and we were

able to provide EarthDance with a new

storage solution for the materials they

reuse throughout the farm. It was a

rewarding day helping an educational

sustainable farm enhance their operation.
