2016-2017 Annual Report
Letter from the Board of Directors
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to share our 2016-2017 Annual Report. We are deeply grateful for this past year of growth at the Waldorf School of Bend. The Board would like to acknowledge our administrative team that is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the school. At the helm is our School Director, Darren Hansen and our Admissions Director, Sarah Rucker. The administration’s hard work and passion are key ingredients to the health of our school. The Board would like to thank our extremely dedicated faculty. Our children are educated so they can develop into the fullest and best expressions of themselves and become powerful world citizens. Without the faculty’s love and commitment to each and every child, coupled with their deep study of Rudolf Steiner’s teachings, we would not have the community of families we have today. The Board would like to lastly, but not least, thank our committed parent body guided by our Parent Council. A key ingredient in creating our community is the significant degree of parental involvement and support. We see this in the community events created by our Parent Council and the financial generosity of our families. The Board of Directors is primarily composed of parent volunteers. This year, Erin Hansen, Annie Willis and Moe Anderson, all longstanding and critically important Board members, completed their service to the Board. Niki Rainwater, a faculty member, also completed her two-year commitment to the Board as Early Childhood Representative. We are grateful for their wisdom, dedication, and commitment to the success of the Waldorf School of Bend. Now, it is with great excitement that we highlight some of our major accomplishments during 2016-2017:
• We exceeded our fundraising goal, raising $114,000; helping to ensure we continue to provide quality Waldorf programs to our students;
• Since 2013, we have increased WSB full-time salaries by almost 90%;
• We increased salaries this year for part-time faculty and bolstered resources dedicated to Subject classes, aftercare and our School Counselor
position;
• We awarded over $95,000 of financial aid in the form of tuition assistance, scholarships and remission, helping 25% of our students to receive
our beautiful Waldorf education and increasing diversity at WSB;
• Our Summer Camp and Parent-Tot programs had their second successful year, and our Aftercare program continued to grow and serve our
community; these programs continued to provide additional revenue streams and serve as outreach to our community;
• Our Wanderlust Ball at the Old Stone Church was a huge success, bringing together our community for an evening of fun and fundraising;
• We broke ground on our Grades Playscape this summer through a successful end of year fundraiser and overwhelming community support, and
we are excited to see the final result.
The Board extends its deepest thanks to you, our parents, families, friends, and alumni, for the generosity, dedication and support you continue to give to Waldorf School of Bend. We look forward to another inspiring year!
Letter from Administration
As we begin the 5th year in our Studio Rd. location, we reflect on how much the school has developed in such a short time. In the 2016-2017 school year
we saw completion of our Early Childhood play yard and the maturation of our Grades playscape with an amazing community fundraising effort. We
instituted BigSIS (our new student management system), which bolsters our reporting capability and student record accuracy. With the steady growth of
our Parent Toddler program we expanded our offering to include both older toddler and parenting circle classes. Our Aftercare program grew by leaps
and bounds with homework clubs, a kayak workshop and gardening club.
Our enrollment entering 2016-2017 welcomed 39 new students represented by 32 new WSB families. WSB’s enrollment remained steady throughout
and while many independent schools saw declined enrollment for this year, ours again remained constant going into 2017-2018. Other successes from
last year include our new Sneak Peak Open House giving both current and prospective families the opportunity to see how the Waldorf curriculum
unfolds through the years, participate in some fun interactive experiments including middle school science and culinary offerings. WSB hosted a lively
and popular booth at the Environmental Center’s Earth Day Fair and NWX Farmer’s Market. Our social media and marketing campaigns are undergoing
upgrades with the help of Sami Bedell-Mulhern at H & E Marketing, Allee Zapp of TriTrillion and our newly formed Marketing Committee. Additionally,
this committee is working on re-designing our website with a launch planned early this school year.
Our WSB community continues to be an inspiration and we thank you for your time, talent and treasures that you bestow on this school each year.
Without the support of our families, this remarkable education would not be available to students in Central Oregon. We look to the future of this school
with gratitude, motivation and the steadfast belief that a Waldorf education is one of the most important gifts we can give our children….and ourselves.
In service,
Darren Hansen, Sarah Rucker and Megan Pettibone
Letter from our Grades Faculty
This year WSB has been graced with a remarkable and dedicated group of parents, faculty and board members who worked diligently to realize some of our school's goals. Our new Jr. High construct, in addition to our stand-alone classes, allowed for each grade to receive the rich curriculum that is developmentally specific to each age. With small class sizes, especially in the upper grades, it was a wonderful opportunity to go deeper into the subject matter and focus on the particular needs of the student body.
All full-time faculty members and several subject teachers attended enriching conferences in February throughout the country. Additionally, our class teachers attended summer deepening intensives to inspire preparations for the upcoming academic year.
After thoughtful consideration of our diverse subject class offerings, we decided to deepen our programs by decreasing the number of offerings from eight to six for the 2017-18 school year. This gives more curriculum time for Spanish and Movement classes each week, and complements our Handwork, Woodwork, Garden/Culinary, and Choir programs.
We are very excited about our new faculty members that have joined us to step into crucial lead teaching roles for the 2017-18 school year. We look forward to another fun year of a full Waldorf curriculum, experiential learning, and collaboration with an amazing community of parents, educators, and children.
In service and gratitude,
WSB Grades Faculty
Letter from our Early Childhood Faculty
The Early Childhood Playscape made its official debut on the first day of the 2016-17 school year, following much hard word by dedicated parents and staff! The 3rd grade class of 2015-16 built a beautiful and sturdy playhouse for the yard. Structure building is a traditional component of the third grade Waldorf curriculum. Many hours of labor and love were devoted to the building of the playhouse by this generous team of students and parents, for which the EC is eternally grateful! Other play structures include a tire swing, a tunnel, sandbox, and a hillside slide. A teeter totter was also built and donated by a generous family. Outdoor Kindergarten began its second successful school year as a weekly addition to the EC program offering, which took the older class off-site weekly to a creek-side "classroom" at Shevlin Park. Volunteer parent drivers helped transport children to and from the park. In the spring, this program took the form of a walking field trip to nearby Orchard Park. In late summer 2016, beautiful new flooring, cabinets, countertops and sink were installed in the kitchen and snack table area in the Hummingbird Kindergarten classroom, which then made clean-up a breeze after meals, crafting, and watercolor painting! Both lead Early Childhood teachers completed their third summer intensive teacher training sessions, in accordance with WECAN requirements for full AWSNA certification. Rachel Caldwell will graduate in 2018 from Micha-el Institute in Portland, Oregon. Niki Rainwater graduated on July 22, 2017 from Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, California and is now a fully certified EC Waldorf teacher. Blessings from our EC Faculty
Letter from our Parent Council This year saw continued growth in Parent Council’s vision and contribution to our school community. We enjoyed nearly 100% participation at our dynamic, authentic and project driven meetings that allowed each of us to contribute our skills more effectively. A few of our successes include the revitalization of WSB’s green efforts and formation of a Green Team. The Green Team, together with staff and faculty, have outlined initiatives from energy use to waste management, and were awarded a $500 waste reduction grant from the Central Oregon Environmental Center. Parent Council created a “pop-up” shop for the 4-Gnomes store and we continue to expand our offerings at festivals from new crafts at Winter Fair to jump-rope making at the May Fair. With money saved from our PC budget and earned at festivals, we will be able to fund the purchase of performance equipment for our many plays, concerts and events throughout the years to come. Looking forward, PC initiated an annual all-school theme that will unite curriculum, activities, outreach, enrichment around a shared exploration. The coming year’s theme “Building a Waldorf Community: You Are the Light” was collectively agreed upon by faculty, staff and PC. In June PC was grateful that so many parents, faculty and staff shared ideas for growth and transformation at our kick-off event. Parent Council’s first theme-driven initiative is to host an all-school potluck the second Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm. Some potlucks will be followed by an hour of parent enrichment with childcare to strengthen our community and depth of understanding of what it means to give our children and our families the gift of a Waldorf education. Check your calendars and join in to enjoy a beautiful year of investigating and living into our Waldorf community. With joyful hearts, WSB Parent Council
