TRANSCRIPT

After a few years of retirement, Molly and Tom Bedell yearned for their entrepreneurial days where they expressed their passions and made a difference. Buying the local Aspen, Colorado music store turned Molly lose creating a lifestyle retail business and launching her own collection of 2OH Threads — apparel under the influence of Peace, Love & Rock ‘n’ Roll. Tom returned to his passion of the 60s and re-launched Bedell Guitars.

Two Old Hippies is inspired by the values of our generation, steeped in the belief that we are one human race, that we are stewards of our Mother Earth, and that the more love we give, the more we get! Under the spirit of Peace, Love & Rock n’ Roll, we’ve taken from what we loved in earlier times and makes us happy still. Returning to the art of creating incredible acoustic guitars is a dream coming true.

Music is the voice of our souls... the currency of change. Music enables the honest expression of our hearts… our cares… our dreams. Music was the voice of the civil rights movement, the call for world peace, Earth Day, women’s rights…it has chronicled our history and been the voice of our personal and cultural consciousness.

1964. The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan and changed the world. At the age of 14 Tom Bedell set up his own studio in his parents’ basement and began importing Bedell Guitars for his students. Hiring a friend with a driver’s license he began showing them to retailers in Iowa and surrounding states. Bedell Guitar Company was born. It was an era of change and a time of possibilities. Soon Tom opened two retail stores, created a booking agency, and promoted garage bands.

2012. “My dream is coming true! To design and build in America the most amazing guitars possible. Without restraint of time or resources. Selecting every material for its beauty and sound. It is an enormous pleasure to introduce The Bedell Limited Edition Collection — guitars handcrafted in America. Available one at a time, a unique Bedell Limited Edition Guitar is born each week. Please join us at bedellguitars.com to follow the discovery of extraordinary woods and the resulting individual instrument creations.”

4

Imagine 150 years of sunshine, rain, wind, storms and drought determining the grain and stiffness of the wood – the tone wood – that makes our music today. It is the respect for the trees and the people and cultures that live among them that demands our dedication to thoughtful harvest and adamant adherence to environmental regulations protecting our forests. Whether African ebony, Honduran mahogany, Canadian maple or Alaskan spruce, there is a reverence for each selection of tone wood that goes into the Bedell Limited Edition Collection.

5

“Tom is like a kid in a candy store. When he discovers a selection of tone wood that speaks to him he becomes animated — like he cannot wait to hear it in one of his guitars.”

— Angela Christensen, Tone Wood Specialist & Master Inlay Artist

The Bedell Limited Edition Collection. Each individually designed guitar is exquisitely crafted from our collection of exotic woods, selected for beauty and tone: one-of-a-kind instruments with their own Birth Certificates and consecutive serial numbers starting at #1.

LEJB-58-7 Beautiful quilted maple with an aged, full gloss toner finish and an exquisite Adirondack spruce top. The jumbo body allows for a deep resonance while the maple back and sides offer a bell-like tone.

LEOH-44-9 Highly figured walnut top, back, sides and neck, richly appointed with a koa binding. The voice of this unique parlor model will offer an earthy tone that will develop multiple characters over its lifespan.

LETB-26-14 A bear claw Sitka spruce top and a rich set of Madagascar rosewood give this dreadnought a voice that is very responsive in the low end. The pick guard is adorned with a custom gold leaf etching.

LETB-63-12 The fly fishing inlay on this custom shop beauty was inspired by the wild rivers of the west which give way to spawning brook trout every fall. Built with lace wood back and sides and a Sitka spruce top.

“When Bob Dylan released a new song, we raced down to the coffee house to jam on it. Peter, Paul and Mary sing-alongs and songs we wrote from our hearts brought us together. It was a special time of discovery. In the spirit of those times, we created a “Coffee House” performance stage in our Nashville store.”

— Tom Bedell

Created from the spirit of the 1960s folk/rock, Bedell Coffee House guitars offer the organic feel and sound that so many artists grew up with. Adirondack tops, Indian rosewood bodies, all mahogany dovetail necks, ebony fretboards — the traditional sunburst look and all solid wood feel of these instruments deliver the sound that inspired the incredible music of the 60s.

Sound board: We have chosen Adirondack spruce grown in the higher elevations of the northern Appalachians and had them carefully quarter sawn to capture the stiffness and resonance of pre-war American guitars. Body: To produce balanced tones with the power of the Adirondack tops, we selected Indian rosewood bodies for their stable, dense, strong

projection and beautiful sustain. Neck: The contribution of our one piece mahogany neck with consistent grain and deep warm tone is magnified through the same grain angle dovetail neck joint design to achieve amazing aliveness.

“Acoustic guitars are the foundation of the music we love, from Richie Havens pushing his guitar to the limit while pronouncing “FREEDOM” to Crosby, Stills and Nash filling the air with their tight harmonies. My dream of re-creating the sound and feel of the guitars I love has come true with the Bedell 1964 guitars.”

Bedell 1964 Guitars are built using traditional Sitka spruce tops and mahogany bodies to give the vintage look and feel we remember and love. In harmony with the forests: The wood for our Sitka spruce soundboards is harvested from downed trees in Alaska. We are not cutting the spruce forest to build Bedell 1964 guitars. Our Honduras mahogany comes from Mayan villages honoring the ejido system of selective harvest and replanting — a system that has been certified as

being sustainably harvested by the Rain Forest Alliance. Handcrafted: Bedell 1964 guitars are constructed similar to the way guitars were built fifty years ago. Sculpted “X” bracing, mahogany angled kerfing, precision dovetail neck joint, hand rubbed thin finish... They bring back the spirit of the music we all love. To Play One Is to Love One.

“When I first picked up a Bedell I was amazed at the feel and balanced tone. But I needed a cutaway and Tom agreed to build me a dread cutaway. When he presented the prototype I refused to give it back. I kept it. It was perfect.”

The most responsive instruments we have created, the four Bedell Award models incorporate the subtle soundboards of Engelmann spruce and Canadian red cedar with the stiffness of Adirondack bracing. Combined with exquisite solid Madagascar rosewood and figured mahogany bodies these guitars invite finger picking for gentle, clear,

For songwriters and performers who want to appreciate every nuance of their music, we have created a rosewood trimmed Monitor sound port on the upper bout of our Bedell Performance Monitor guitars. Music is projected directly toward your ear while having little impact on the central sound delivered to listeners. Each guitar includes a Fishman Sonitone Onboard Preamp System as well as a cover that can be inserted into the Monitor

sound port to extinguish the Monitor function. All solid AAA tone wood: Alaska Sitka spruce, Canadian red cedar, Indian rosewood and African sapele. One piece African mahogany dovetail neck. Gold Grover tuners. Forward sculpted “X” bracing.

For decades, Phil Keaggy has been hailed as one of the top three finger picking guitarists in the world. He’s a master musician who coaxes every bit of sound out of the instruments he plays. The Bedell Performance guitars can keep up with him.

“For most of us, a life of music began when we were young and forever remains a part of our lives. We offer open mic Sundays at the Nashville store to give kids stage experience. Twelve-year-old Sophia Dion performed while helping out a children’s cancer program. I could not believe her voice — she can sing! We made sure she had a Bedell” — Molly Bedell

Why should you care? Because we care so much! Tom Bedell’s guitars are different. They aren’t the products of a large corporation that mass produces guitars and watches every nickel and dime. They’re personal. They’re filled with inspiration, hope and are lovingly crafted into toneful Instruments of Change; individual instruments from a dedicated group of guitar-loving craftsmen that have lived, breathed and loved guitars ever since the night The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan.

Being a smaller acoustic guitar workshop we make value based decisions — focusing on the sustainability of the world’s hardwood forests, creating extraordinary instruments, providing unparalleled service and customer care, and celebrating the music. We are doing what we love to support you doing what you love — creating music. We are able to concentrate on little details, celebrate individual selections of tone woods, and offer premier instruments at values other larger companies just can not approach. We are doing all of this because we love music and what it means in our lives, just as you do.
