Introduction to Mark

Who: Since at least the early2 Century of the Commonnd

Era, this gospel has beenassociated with John Mark, ayounger companion both ofPeter and Paul, though Mark’sname does not appear in thetext of the gospel itself. Mark,in all probability a trilingualJew, was living in Jerusalemat the home of his motherMary when first mentioned inActs 12:12. His first languagewould have been Aramaic,also the native tongue ofJesus. As part of hiseducation, Mark would havelearned some Hebrew. In hisinteraction with non-Jews, herelied on the Koine Greek thatwas the common idiom in theeastern half of Rome’s empire.

Mark joined Paul andBarnabas on their firstmissionary journey, though heapparently did not completethe trip. After a controversybetween Paul and Barnabasover Mark for havingabandoned the journey,Barnabas and Paul parted

ways and Mark continued withBarnabas. As 2 Timothy 4:11points out, Mark’s relationshipwith Paul was repaired at theend. Traditionally, the gospelwas thought to be a record ofPeter’s reminiscences andproclamation. Peter mentionsMark as his “son,” in 1 Peter5:13.

Given his frequent asidesexplaining Jewish customs,Mark seems to address anaudience that is unfamiliarwith them and thus, byinference, is not primarilyJewish. The presence of Latinloan words in Greek, such as“centurion,” reinforces thesense that non-Jews werebeing addressed.

What: The literary genreMark pioneers is calledgospel. The document wasoriginally written in Koine or“Common” Greek, the tradelanguage of the eastern Romanempire in the 1 Century CE. st

document represents twocrucia l points in thedevelopment of Christianity:1. It represents the transitionfrom a free-flowing, oral,story-telling tradition, to amore fixed, written, literarytradition; and 2, it marks thegospel’s first major cross-cultural leap: from its originsas a sub-group within Judaismto an independent religion,appealing to those beyond theconfines of its original setting.

When: Scholars date thegospel between 50 and 75 CE. Most contemporary Biblescholars believe Mark was thefirst gospel. Some scholars ofancient papyri lean toward theearlier date, while others placeits writing at or shortly afterthe destruction of Jerusalem’sTemple in 70 CE.

Where: The exact location ofMark’s writing is unknown.Mark’s association with Peterand the presence of Latin loanwords in the original textpossibly point to Rome as itsplace of composition.

Why: Mark writes, in part, tofix the form of the Christianproclamation. By puttingJesus’s words and actions in anarrative framework, Markcreated a pattern that Matthewand Luke at least shared. Mark’s account becomes thefixed standard by which theauthenticity of later accountsof Jesus’ life will be judged.

Galilaea sequebantur eum etministrabant ei et aliae multaeq u a e s i m u l c um e oascenderant Hierosolyma

And when he was in Galilee,they followed him andministered to him, and manyothers who came up toJerusalem together with him.

Jesus Is Buried15:42 et cum iam sero essetfactum quia erat parascevequod est ante sabbatum

And when evening had alreadycome, because it waspreparation day – that is,before the Sabbath –

15:43 venit Ioseph abArimathia nobilis decurio quiet ipse erat expectans regnumDei et audacter introiit adPilatum et petiit corpus Iesu

Joseph of Arimathea, anobleman of the government,who himself was waiting forGod’s kingdom, came andboldly went in to Pilate, andasked for Jesus’s body.

15:44 Pilatus autemmirabatur si iam obisset eta c c e r s i t o c e n t u r i o n einterrogavit eum si iammortuus esset

But Pilate wondered whetherhe had already died. And, thecenturion summoned, he askedhim whether Jesus was alreadydead.

15:45 et cum cognovisset acenturione donavit corpusIoseph

And when he had found outfrom the centurion, he gavethe body to Joseph.

15:46 Ioseph autem mercatussindonem et deponens euminvolvit sindone et posuit eumin monumento quod eratexcisum de petra et advolvitlapidem ad ostium monumenti

But Joseph, buying fine linencloth and taking him down,wrapped him in the cloth andput him in a tomb that was cutfrom the rock. And hereplaced the stone at the

15:47 Maria autemMagdalene et Maria Iosephaspiciebant ubi poneretur

But Mary Magdalene andMary of Joseph saw where hewas placed.

Power Over DeathMark 16:1 et cum transissetsabbatum Maria Magdalene etMaria Iacobi et Salomeemerunt aromata ut venientesunguerent eum

And when the Sabbath hadpassed, Mary Magdalene, andMary of Jacob, and Salomebought spices so, comingearly, they could anoint him.

16:2 et valde mane unasabbatorum veniunt admonumentum orto iam sole

And they come to the tombvery early on the first day ofthe Sabbaths, the sun alreadyrisen.

And looking, they see thestone rolled back – obviously,it was very large.

16:5 et introeuntes inmonumento viderunt iuvenemsedentem in dextris coopertumstola candida et obstipuerunt

And going into the tomb, theysaw a youth sitting at the right,covered in a white robe, andthey were astounded.

16:6 qui dicit illis noliteexpavescere Iesum quaeritisNazarenum cruc i f i xumsurrexit non est hic ecce locusubi posuerunt eum

He says to them, “Don’t be51

afraid! You’re looking forJesus Nazarene crucified. Hehas risen. He isn’t here. Look! This is the place wherethey put him.

16:7 sed ite et dicite

discipulis eius et Petro quiapraecedit vos in Galilaeam ibieum videbitis sicut dixit vobis

“Yet go and say to hisdisciples and to Peter that he’sgone before you to Galilee. You will see him there, as hesaid to you.”

16:8 at illae exeuntesfugerunt de monumentoinvaserat enim eas tremor etpavor et nemini quicquamdixerunt timebant enim

And they, going out, ran awayfrom the tomb, for tremblingand fear had invaded them. And they said nothing toanyone, for they were afraid.

Demonstrations andDisbelief

thrown out seven demons.

16:10 illa vadens nuntiavithis qui cum eo fuerantlugentibus et flentibus

She, going back, told thosewho were with him, while theywere grieving and weeping.

16:11 et illi audientes quiaviveret et visus esset ab ea noncrediderunt

And they, hearing that he wasalive and had been seen byher, didn’t believe.

16:12 post haec autemduobus ex eis ambulantibusostensus est in alia effigieeuntibus in villam

But after this, he showedhimself in another form to twoof them while they werewalking, going to the country.

16:13 et illi euntesnuntiaverunt ceteris nec illiscrediderunt

And they, going back, told the

others, yet they didn’t believe.

16:15 et dixit eis euntes inmundum universum praedicateevangelium omni creaturae

And he said to them, “Goinginto the whole world, preachgood news to every creature.

“Who believes and is baptizedwill be secured. Indeed, whodoesn’t believe will becondemned.

16:17 signa autem eos quicrediderint haec sequentur innomine meo daemonia eicientlinguis loquentur novis

“But these signs will followthose who believe in my name. They will throw out demons. They will speak newlanguages.

16:18 serpentes tollent et simortiferum quid biberint noneos nocebit super aegrotosmanus inponent et benehabebunt

“They will take up snakes and,if they drink some death-dealing poison, it will notharm them. They will layhands on the sick, and theywill have health.”

The Lord Ascends and the Disciples Set Out

16:19 et Dominus quidempostquam locutus est eis

adsumptus est in caelum etsedit a dextris Dei

And the Lord indeed, after hehad spoken to them, was takenup to the sky, and sat at God’sright.

16:20 illi autem profectipraed icaverunt ubiqueDomino cooperante etse rmonem conf irmantesequentibus signis

But they, setting out, preached– the Lord working with themeverywhere and confirmingthe words with signsfollowing.
