Introduction to Mark

Who: Since at least the early2 Century of the Commonnd

Era, this gospel has beenassociated with John Mark, ayounger companion both ofPeter and Paul, though Mark’sname does not appear in thetext of the gospel itself. Mark,in all probability a trilingualJew, was living in Jerusalemat the home of his motherMary when first mentioned inActs 12:12. His first languagewould have been Aramaic,also the native tongue ofJesus. As part of hiseducation, Mark would havelearned some Hebrew. In hisinteraction with non-Jews, herelied on the Koine Greek thatwas the common idiom in theeastern half of Rome’s empire.

Mark joined Paul andBarnabas on their firstmissionary journey, though heapparently did not completethe trip. After a controversybetween Paul and Barnabasover Mark for havingabandoned the journey,Barnabas and Paul parted

ways and Mark continued withBarnabas. As 2 Timothy 4:11points out, Mark’s relationshipwith Paul was repaired at theend. Traditionally, the gospelwas thought to be a record ofPeter’s reminiscences andproclamation. Peter mentionsMark as his “son,” in 1 Peter5:13.

Given his frequent asidesexplaining Jewish customs,Mark seems to address anaudience that is unfamiliarwith them and thus, byinference, is not primarilyJewish. The presence of Latinloan words in Greek, such as“centurion,” reinforces thesense that non-Jews werebeing addressed.

What: The literary genreMark pioneers is calledgospel. The document wasoriginally written in Koine or“Common” Greek, the tradelanguage of the eastern Romanempire in the 1 Century CE. st

Mark’s written language isunpolished, almost crude. The

document represents twocrucia l points in thedevelopment of Christianity:1. It represents the transitionfrom a free-flowing, oral,story-telling tradition, to amore fixed, written, literarytradition; and 2, it marks thegospel’s first major cross-cultural leap: from its originsas a sub-group within Judaismto an independent religion,appealing to those beyond theconfines of its original setting.

When: Scholars date thegospel between 50 and 75 CE. Most contemporary Biblescholars believe Mark was thefirst gospel. Some scholars ofancient papyri lean toward theearlier date, while others placeits writing at or shortly afterthe destruction of Jerusalem’sTemple in 70 CE.

Where: The exact location ofMark’s writing is unknown.Mark’s association with Peterand the presence of Latin loanwords in the original textpossibly point to Rome as itsplace of composition.

Why: Mark writes, in part, tofix the form of the Christianproclamation. By puttingJesus’s words and actions in anarrative framework, Markcreated a pattern that Matthewand Luke at least shared. Mark’s account becomes thefixed standard by which theauthenticity of later accountsof Jesus’ life will be judged.

And they watched him,whether he would heal on aSabbath, so they could accusehim.

While he was still speaking,they come from the synagogueruler, saying that “Yourdaughter is dead. Why troublethe teacher further?”

But Jesus, hearing the wordthat they said, said to thesynagogue ruler, “Don’t beafraid! Only believe!”

And they mocked him. Yet

he, throwing all of them out,took the girl’s father andmother and those who werewith him, and went in wherethe girl was laid.

And, taking the girl’s hand, hesaid to her, “Talitha, cumi!” (that is, interpreted, “Girl, Isay to you, get up!”)

And the girl got up at once andwalked around (but she wastwelve years old). And theywere astounded by the greatestamazement.

And he commanded themfiercely that no one might


know it, and he said to giveher something to eat.

And he went through thevillages around, teaching. And he called the twelvetogether, and began to sendthem by twos, and gave thempower over unclean spirits.

6:8 et praecepit eis ne quidtollerent in via nisi virgamtantum non peram non panemneque in zona aes

And he commanded them thatthey take nothing on the roadexcept a staff only – not a bag,not bread, nor coins in thebelt,

6:9 sed calciatos sandaliis etne induerentur duabus tunicis

yet be shoed in sandals, and


they not put on two tunics.

And he said to them,“Wherever you enter into ahouse, stay there until youleave from there.

And King Herod heard, for hisname was made known. Andhe said that “John the Baptisthas risen from the dead, andfor this reason powers are atwork in him.”

But others said that he isElijah. Others, indeed, said heis a prophet like one of theprophets.

And their testimony wasn’tcoming together.

And the high priest, standingup in the middle, questionedJesus, saying, “Aren’t youanswering anything to thesethings that are thrown upagainst you by them?”

But he kept silent and saidnothing. The high priestquestioned him again, and hesays to him, “Are you Christ,the Blessed One’s Son?”

But Jesus said to him, “I am,and you will see man’s Sonsitting at Power’s right, andcoming with the sky’s clouds.”

Tearing one’s clothing46

And he denied it, saying, “Ineither know nor understoodwhat you’re saying.”

But when the slave girl hadseen him again, she began tosay to those standing aroundthat, “This is one of them.”

And he denied it again. Andafter a little while, those whostood around said to Peter,“You really are one of them,for you’re Galilean.”

And they bring him to theplace of Golgotha, that is,interpreted, “place of theSkull.”

15:23 et dabant ei biberemurratum vinum et nonaccepit

And they gave him wine withmyrrh to drink, and he didn’t48

But Pilate wondered whetherhe had already died. And, thecenturion summoned, he askedhim whether Jesus was alreadydead.
