Chapter Board News Strategy Meeting On 10th September the Board had a Strategy Meeting in Zeist with three of our sponsors, where together we determined the PMI NL Chapter priorities for the coming years. We had a very good meeting with lively and open discussions. The session followed a logical flow from presenting the current strategy, collecting general ideas and proposals around the chapter focus areas and sponsor input for the strategy revision, presenting the past and current Chapter performance and achievements and deciding on the strategy update and the actionable items.

Operationalizing the Strategy The PMI NL Chapter strategy is meant to give direction for at least 3 years. This year we have implemented renewed emphasis on Sponsors, further Innovation through the network app, the update of our Website (new collaboration opportunities), more Chapter Meetings with themes around personal development, and further alignment with international future standards like ISO. The first part of the Strategy Meeting emphasized the need to further operationalize the current 2015–2019 strategy to get inspiration and ideas to enhance our 2015 strategy for 2016 and beyond. After the welcome, Jan Vermeijs presented an overview of the existing PMI NL Chapter mid-term (2015-2019) strategy to have a common starting point for the discussions. Thereafter, Henk-Jan Molenkamp got us thinking out-of-the-box for inspiration and ideas as input to the revised strategy around interesting topics such as: CAPM Certification, Is Project Management a Profession? and Is PMI NL a resource and innovator for Project Management in NL? After dinner, Rommert Stellingwerf presented the Chapter performance trends from 2009 – 2014 and the 2015 initiatives to bring attendees up to speed on the Chapter achievements in the past and in the current year.

Sponsor Opportunities The sponsors are important to PMI NL: they make it possible to publish, promote, organize, broadcast and bring value to our members. PMI NL is important to our sponsors for visibility and promotion of their activities to our members. In 2015 the Chapter has renewed its attention to promote our sponsors by supporting their initiatives, providing reminders for newsletter input, special announcements during Chapter Meetings, LIWGs (Local Interest WorkGroups) around topics important to sponsors, new marketing methods (pay as you use), etc. In order to improve the value of the Chapter to our sponsors, we asked our

sponsors to determine what the Chapter should do for better results, visibility, etc. in the context of optimal value and win-win for both members and sponsors. Henk-Jan invited the sponsors to present their views on how to get more out of the sponsor-Chapter relationship by focusing on the areas: First impressions on your sponsorship of PMI NL, Your dream! and Your advice to PMI NL.

Conclusion At the end of the day the participants gathered lots of good ideas and some very original proposals for the Chapter to fine-tune their strategy and for the sponsors to experience a more productive relationship with the Chapter. Both groups took away a list of items that they can act upon in the short and mid-term. The revised strategy will be the basis for the chapter’s 2016 Business Plan which will be compiled in December. The following ideas and proposals (some new, some confirming old ones) came up to improve the visibility of PMI and Project Management in general in the Netherlands for the mutual benefit of PMI NL and its sponsors:

- develop an entry-level PMI Project Management certification in Dutch (CAPM and PMP are considered too heavy)

- protect the title of Project Manager (support a student to research this topic or initiate a court case to achieve this)

- PMI NL, together with IPMA NL, get invited to formally review large projects, e.g. national infrastructure projects or governmental ICT projects

- increase the promotion of research on Project, Programme and Portfolio Management sponsored by PMI Inc. and adopt it for the Dutch situation

- align with DNRG (Dutch National Research Group), setup by Hogeschool Utrecht and IPMA NL

- use global funding of PMI for Marketing and Research activities in NL get PMI NL higher in the Google® ranking when searching for “Project Management” in NL

- trainers to promote PMI (NL) in their classes - make presentations on PMI (NL) in various business clubs - promote PMI (NL) more in Dutch (website/blog/social media also in Dutch, Dutch

brochures, Dutch training and certification) - PMI (NL) to connect more with large organizations (which would bring more business

to sponsors)

Announcement of a new Local Interest Workgroup: Corporate Governance As Project, Program or Portfolio Manager we very often see that projects/programs fail due to instability or lacking project governance. This is directly related to poor corporate governance. It is important and beneficial for companies that we, as PMI certified professionals, get more involved in setting up and/or advising about Governance since we feel the consequences of poor management or communication first in our programs. Corporate Governance broadly refers to the mechanisms, processes and relations by which corporations are controlled and directed. Corporate Governance essentially involves balancing the interests of the many stakeholders in a company - these include its shareholders, management, customers, suppliers, financiers, government and the community.

Objective: - The PMI NL Local Interest Workgroup “Corporate Governance” focuses at the lessons

learned, do’s and don’ts of governing Projects & Programs and investigates the relationship with Corporate Governance. Its intention is to provide guidelines and early warning systems as to what good practices prescribe for organizations running multiple Programs and Projects and Corporate Governance in general;

- Increase Innovation within companies by good Governance for Project Portfolio Management;

- Establish PMI NL (and this LIWG Corporate Governance in particular) as an important resource for Corporate Governance set-up aimed at Executive Managers and Corporate Board Members.

Target LIWG audience: Senior Portfolio and Program Managers, as well as Directors Project Management (Senior Management level required).

Approach: After a joint definition and fine-tuning of the objectives, scope and interest areas (scope and boundaries), PMI global resources will be examined for best practices followed by interviews of Executive and Senior Managers as well as Board Members for obtaining current perceptions and perceived bottlenecks. After this fieldwork is completed, guidelines will be developed summarizing the findings and resulting in concrete advice for Executive Management. Besides the research & interview work, the LIWG participants will have the opportunity to:

- Qualify and/or participate in a program for Corporate Board Member development to become established consultants/advisors in the arena of (Corporate/Program) Governance;

- Publish findings through PMI Channels; - Become volunteering consultant promoting ‘PMI & Project Governance in the

Boardroom.’ For more information or participating in this ambitious new workgroup, please contact [email protected].

Looking for Agile Thought Leaders The Certification Department is looking into creating a council of Agile thought leaders who could assist in exam development activities. Tasks include assisting in recruitment, selection, and guidance for article creation and/or reviewer SMEs. This council would help ensure that SMEs recruited are not only globally and industry diverse but also are expert Agile practitioners. Are you an Agile thought leader and interested in joining this council? If so, please contact Anca Costache (Chapter Partner North West & Central Europe Region 8).
