SPRING PREVIEW

Back In Purple and GoldThe UNI football program began spring training on March 25. The Panthers have 14 practices scheduled, ending on April 24 with the annual Spring Game. UNI returns 38 letter winners from the 2014 season to the gridiron this spring.

Save the DateUNI will host its annual Spring Game on Friday, April 24. Starting at 5 p.m., fans can enjoy a pre-game tailgate sponsored by Tyson Foods with free grub from 5-6 p.m. on the Eldon Miller Plaza. The voice of the Panthers, Gary Rima, will host his weekly show on the plaza, gaining insight into spring ball from select players and coahces. The game will kick off at 6:30 p.m.. The event is open and free to the public.

Experience on the FieldUNI returns 13 starters to the roster for 2015, combining for over 240 starts wearing the Purple and Old Gold. Out of the 13 starters, nine are seniors on the squad.

Auto-Schmadic: Junior placekicker Michael Schmadeke as-serted himself as one of the strongest kickers in the MVFC and theFCSin2014duringhisfirststartingrole.Heledtheteaminpointswithaschool-record132from27-of-29onfieldgoalsand51-of-53onPATs.HefinishedtheseasonleadingallFCSkickersin points and was just two points shy of leading all Division I kickers (FCS and FBS), trailing only Jaden Oberkrom of TCU with 135 points.

Special Team: UNI’s defense and special teams excelled during the 2014 season, scoring 177 of UNI’s 452 total points. Michael Schmadekewent27-of-29fromfieldgoalrangeand51-of-53on PATs. UNI’s defense scored four touchdowns, while special teams play added a blocked punt for a touchdown and a kickoff return for a touchdown in 2014.

Red-Zone: UNIfinishedtheseasonrankedfirstintheMVFCand the FCS in red zone statistics. The Panthers scored 48 out of the 49 times that they were in the red zone for a 98 percent success rate and 29 touchdowns.

Down Goes No. 1: The Panthers ended NDSU’s 33-game win-ning streak Saturday in front of 14,777 in the UNI-Dome (11/8).ItwasNDSU’sfirstlosssince2012whentheyweredefeatedby the Indiana State Sycamores. UNI now has three wins overNo. 1 ranked opponents. UNI also beat No. 1 New Hampshire24-21 in 2005 and No. 1 Youngstown State 35-32 in 1997.
