Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you back to an event that is not only the largest of its kind in the country, but also serves as a kickoff to the golf season here in the Northeast!

This evening, we will be honoring a native New Englander, Brad Faxon, who has truly “given back to the game.” Following a great Faxon-Ouimet family tradition that goes back to his late grandfather, Raymond Faxon, who had been a Ouimet Trustee and great benefactor, Brad has achieved victories at every level of golf and philanthropy. He first made himself known to The Fund while still an amateur, winning the Ouimet Memorial Tournament title in 1980. After turning pro in 1983, he went on to capture PGA and Champions Tour victories throughout the last three decades and played on two Ryder Cup teams. Throughout his distinguished career, he has embodied the qualities that mark a true champion with a respect for the game of golf through his commitment to charity. Today, while still competing and working as an analyst/announcer for FOX Sports, Brad still finds time to host the CVS Caremark Charity Classic, and give back to his community and beyond. We are thrilled to honor him this evening and to say ‘thanks’ for all he has done.

Our second honoree is Richard Barrett, a Ouimet Alum, former Director, past President, and now Trustee of The Fund. Rich will receive the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. As President, Rich was instrumental in developing the Centennial Bag Tag Program, which today brings in over $1.2 Million annually, going directly to Scholarships. Rich and his wife, Jean, have endowed a scholarship and are also Ouimet Society Lifetime Members. He continues to be a champion for the Ouimet Fund, recently serving as President of Charles River Country Club, a great supporting club.

All of us at this Banquet owe a great debt to our dear friend, Dick Connolly, both as a Presenting Sponsor, with The Connolly Group, and as a tireless worker for The Fund. It is no exaggeration to say that these contributions have been critical in enabling the Ouimet Fund to achieve its goals and milestones. In addition, my deep thanks go out to all of our other sponsors this evening. I’d especially like to thank the Banquet Committee and the Board of Directors, whose commitment to The Fund and the students whom it benefits, have brought us here to celebrate this evening.

On a somber note, someone is missing from the festivities tonight, our great friend Peter Maich who passed earlier this year. Peter’s dedication and energy were critical to the success of the event. Peter’s legacy will live on and he undoubtedly will be smiling down on all of us this year and forever in his role as Banquet Chair in Memoriam.

Most of all, tonight, we proudly gather to remember why we are here. Francis Ouimet’s legacy lives on through The Fund that proudly carries his name, and has helped over 5,200 young people achieve a college education. As you will hear in the course of the evening, the $1.6 Million that we will be awarding to deserving young men and women this year will bring the total awards given out by The Fund to over $28 Million since 1949. These awards have been made possible because you, and thousands of others like you, support us through programs at your clubs, and otherwise. You have recognized the importance of giving back to the game that we all enjoy and to the young people who contribute so much to that enjoyment. Our thanks, along with the thousands of Scholars who have benefited from these awards, goes out to all of you.

MESSAGE FROM PGA TOUR COMMISSIONER TIM FINCHEM

On behalf of the PGA TOUR, it is my honor to congratulate Brad Faxon on being honored as the 18th recipient of the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf.

Brad exemplifies the spirit of Francis Ouimet, who was a humble champion, an ambassador for the game and a pioneer in making our sport such a tremendous supporter of charity. These are qualities that have helped define Brad as a player, and a man.

Brad turned professional in 1983 and earned eight PGA TOUR victories, including winning twice in New England at the 1992 New England Classic in Worcester, Massachusetts and the 2005 Buick Championship just outside of Hartford, Connecticut. In 2011, after turning 50, he joined the Champions Tour and has added two more titles to his impressive resume.

Over the course of his career, Brad has been an exemplary leader who has earned the respect of his colleagues for not only his playing skills, but also for his sense of fair play and integrity. He has held leadership roles within our organization, having served as a Player Director on the PGA TOUR Policy Board and currently as a Player Director on the Champions Tour Division Board.

Brad is also committed to giving back to less fortunate than himself. Along with his good friend, Billy Andrade, Brad runs Billy Andrade/Brad Faxon Charities for Children, Inc. which has impacted the lives of needy children in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts since 1991. The two are hosts of the annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic, which has awarded more than $18 million in grants to Rhode Island southeastern New England charities over the past 15 years.

Brad Faxon is a man of the highest quality, and a most worthy recipient of this honor. Brad has been honored as the 2002 Ambassador of Golf and with the 2005 Payne Stewart Award for exemplifying the values of character, charity and sportsmanship of the late Payne Stewart. I’m sure being honored tonight will rank as a highlight of his career.

Congratulations to the men and women of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the lives of young people. The Scholarship Fund has raised more than $28 million benefitting more than 5,000 students since 1949. This is a wonderful accomplishment, one that you should be proud of.

GETTING TO KNOW BRAD FAXONThe golf legacy in the Faxon family goes back 91 years to 1924 when Raymond Faxon first started working at the old Caddie Camp at Hyannisport Golf Club.

He was a 16-year-old student at Boston Latin School then. In a few years, he would be a camp counselor, and then branch out to manage caddie camps, eventually with his brother, George.

Raymond became a teacher, and in the summer months he ran the Coonamessett, Wianno and Woods Hole caddie camps and later owned the Coonamessett Golf Course on Cape Cod. Eventually, he used his great energy and mathematical mind to become an investor, and as you might expect, did very well.

Although Faxon left the caddie camp business and golf course ownership, he always loved the game. In the 60’s he had a special water fountain built on Woods Hole with the Ouimet motto, and he later became a Ouimet Director and Trustee. Raymond passed love of golf and good play onto his children. Collectively, they won numerous club championships and other titles.

In time, there was another generations of Faxons, and, in 1980, Raymond (pictured right with Brad) asked Ouimet Memorial Tournament Chair Dick Connolly for an invitation for his 18-year-old grandson Brad. It became another great Faxon investment, as Brad became the youngest winner of the Ouimet Memorial at the time. It was part of a magical summer in which he would also win the Rhode Island and New England Amateur Championships. He then went to Furman University where he would become a two-time All-American and the collegiate player of the year and a Walker Cupper before turning pro in 1983.

Brad is known as one of the game’s great putters, and on the PGA TOUR scenes of him making big putts were very familiar. He became a consistent money winner, and broke through with his first victory in 1991 at the Buick Classic. He won twice in 1992, on familiar soil at the New England Classic at Pleasant Valley and the prestigious International. In all, he won eight times in a wonderful career. Fittingly, his final victory came in New England, at the Buick Championship in Hartford in 2005. And, again, the putter was hot, as he thrilled the huge gallery with a final round 61. He took home more than $1 Million seven times and his career total of $17 Million had him frequently among the top money winners and a regular at the Masters. And, the hot putter helped him to a final round 63 and fulfillment of a dream at the 1995 PGA Championship - a spot on the Ryder Cup team. He also made the squad in 1997.

Brad is now on the Champions Tour, where he has won twice. Following a very successful stint on NBC and Golf Channel, he has joined the new FOX Sports golf broadcast team. His always pleasant personality and smooth style make him a fan favorite, and a fixture on TV screens and speaking engagement podiums. He has also branched off into golf course design, working on projects at The Bay Club and TPC Boston. He has been a special Ambassador both for the Deutsche Bank Championship and for Titleist and FootJoy World Wide, another longtime Ouimet friend. To this day, Brad shares a special bond with its Chairman and CEO Wally Uihlein. While Brad was starring in the pro game, grandfather Raymond made substantial gifts to create the Raymond Faxon Scholarship for Ouimet Scholars from Cape Cod. It was the largest Ouimet endowed award at that time. His aunt, Jane Faxon Welch, also followed the family tradition as a Ouimet Board member, and his cousin Tracy, became one of the leading women’s amateur golfers in Massachusetts. The entire family was on hand at the Ouimet Banquet in 2002 when Raymond received the Connolly Award and shared the spotlight with, indeed some said “stole the show” from, the principal honoree, former President George H.W. Bush. The 94-year-old Mr. Faxon captivated the large audience with tales from his caddie camp days, while his grandson presented a Titleist Brad Faxon putter to Mr. Bush. The proceeds of tonight’s dinner will make another substantial addition to the Raymond Faxon Scholarship and help more young men and women on the Cape pursue their dreams through higher education.


PROFILING OUR HONOREELike his grandfather, Brad is deeply committed to charity. He and Billy Andrade founded Charities for Children in 1991, and it has raised over $17 Million for underprivileged children in southeastern New England. Since 1999, it’s hallmark has been the wildly-successful CVS Caremark Charity Classic. Throughout his career he’s received substantial recognition for his charitable endeavors, including the prestigious Payne Stewart, Bing Crosby and Ambassador of Golf Awards. His leadership has been admired by his peers and he has served on both the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour Policy boards. In 2013, Brad spearheaded an effort to save the golf team at Furman when it was nearly eliminated by budget issues. There is a Brad Faxon Scholarship at Furman. There is also one created by the Burke Fund in Rhode Island, the Ouimet Fund’s counterpart organization in the Ocean State. “From What Golf Has Given You, Let’s Give Something Back to Golf.” That has been the Ouimet Fund slogan and the Faxon family and Brad’s creed. It is the inscription Raymond made on the fountain at Woods Hole long ago.

Brad, his wife Dory (pictured below) and daughter Charlotte now make their home in South Florida but still come home to Rhode Island for the summer. The Faxons are also proud parents of three daughters, Emily, Melanie and Sophie.

All in the FamilyGolfing prowess in the Faxon family just isn’t limited to Brad Faxon, Jr., who resides amongst the Top 75 on the PGA TOUR’s all-time money list and is regarded as one of the finest putters to ever step inside the ropes. The family has established their dominance in local, regional and national amateur golf circles.

Cousin Tracy Welch has competed in 17 USGA Championships, including the 1993 United States Women’s Open and has captured one Massachusetts Women’s Open Title and two Massachusetts Women’s Amateur titles. Tracy garnered Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts (WGAM) Player of the Year accolades in 2002 and, this past summer, won the Women’s Club Championship at The Country Club, Woods Hole and Winchester Country Club. Brad’s aunt, Jane Faxon Welch, has won countless club championships and a pair of WGAM titles as well as teeing it up in two USGA Championships. Jane’s husband, Wade, was the Senior Club Champion at Woods Hole, while Brad Faxon, Sr. and Linwood Faxon both hoisted club championship trophies there as well.

TONIGHT’S MASTER OF CEREMONIESSean McDonough serves as a play-by-play commentator on ESPN’s college basketball and college football games, primarily calling the network’s Big Monday BIG EAST basketball and the Saturday afternoon ABC college football. He recently was named the lead play-by-play announcer for the World Wide Leader’s Monday Night Baseball coverage. He is also serves as a host on ESPN’s golf coverage. He rejoined ESPN in 2000 after having worked for the network from 1989-95. McDonough also has provided play-by-play on the network for NHL, tennis, the College World Series, and college lacrosse, soccer and hockey. A close friend of tonight’s honoree Brad Faxon, McDonough is a member at Boston Golf Club and Woodland Golf Club and is an avid golfer, regularly bringing his clubs with him wherever he travels.

McDonough was the television play-by-play announcer for the Boston Red Sox from 1988-2004, during which time he was honored four times with the New England Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Play-by-Play. McDonough has also been a fixture on the network television scene. He spent 10 years at CBS Sports as the network’s lead college football play-by-play announcer from 1997 to 1999. In 1992 and 1993, he and Tim McCarver formed the network’s lead Major League Baseball broadcast team, calling the All-Star Game, the National League Championship Series and the World Series. McDonough has provided commentary for a diverse array of sporting broadcasts, including men’s and women’s college basketball, NFL, golf, and U.S. Open Tennis. In May 2007, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Southern Vermont College in recognition of his career, community service and personal achievements, and was the Commencement Speaker at graduation.He is the president of the Sean McDonough Charitable Foundation, which distributes grants to children’s charities in Massachusetts. In its first seven years, the Foundation has given nearly $3 Million to 129 children’s charities throughout Massachusetts. McDonough graduated cum laude from Syracuse University in 1984. A familiar face to New England golf fans, Seth H. Waugh currently serves as Vice Chairman of Business Development for Florida East Coast Industries, LLC (FECI). Prior to this, Mr. Waugh spent 13 years at Deutsche Bank in various roles including CEO for the Americas from 2001-2013, and he currently chairs the Deutsche Bank Americas Advisory Board. He was the driving force in the creation and success of the Deutsche Bank Championship, a PGA Tour event since 2003 and, held annually at TPC Boston during the Labor Day weekend. During its fifth season in 2007, the DB Championship was chosen as the second of four playoff events comprising the new FedEx Cup system. He forged close relationships with PGA TOUR officials, sponsors and golf professionals. A passionate golfer himself, Waugh is an enthusiastic regular in the pre-tournament Pro-Am event, annually using the services of a Ouimet Scholar to caddie for him. Extremely active in outside projects and philanthropic endeavors, he serves on the Board of Trustees at his alma mater, the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ, and was its President from 2009-2013. Seth joined the Board of Trustees of Wake Forest University in 2013 and remains the Deutsche Bank representative on the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation Board. Seth also serves on the Advisory Boards of Workday, Inc. and the PGA of America. He is a board member for The Honda Classic and was also recently elected to the Board of Franklin Templeton Investments. A Bay State native, Waugh is a graduate of Amherst College and earned dual-Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Economics and English.


CONNOLLY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDThe Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award was established in 2000 in honor of Mr. Connolly, a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, Director, Trustee and former President who has proudly served The Fund for nearly four decades. Mr. Connolly is the embodiment of everything a Ouimet Fund volunteer can be. For the past 36 years, he has been Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament, considered one of the region’s most prestigious amateur events. He has also underwritten the production of the Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy, the Ouimet Memorial’s permanent trophy that is one of the most unique in all of golf. Mr. Connolly has also been the driving force in the establishment of the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf Annual Banquets. He established an endowed Ouimet Scholarship in his family’s name and helped The Fund in too many ways to name. The Connolly Award is presented annually in his honor. Mr. Connolly is a member of Concord Country Club, The Kittansett Club and Weston Golf Club. He was feted with a special dinner and presentation of The Fund’s Spirit of Golf Award, resulting in largest endowed scholarship in Ouimet Fund history.

2015 CONNOLLY AWARD RECIPIENT RICH BARRETT

Rich Barrett has had Ouimet blood in his veins since first receiving the Scholarship to go to Boston College. Over the years his involvement and dedication have grown even more.

Rich started as a caddie at Charles River Country Club, and was mentored by and frequently caddied for Ouimet Alum and former President Charlie Fox along with Ted Highberger, who would eventually precede Rich as another Ouimet president. They pushed the promising young caddie to the Ouimet Fund, and he went on to BC, graduating in 1989.

Over the next few years, he worked with Ernst & Young, and then went on to Harvard Business School where he again received Ouimet help, becoming only the fourth Ouimet Scholar to also receive the Bill Danforth Ouimet Scholarship. He graduated from HBS in 1996 and went on to assignments with Fidelity and Wellington Management.

He joined the Ouimet Board in 2001. Over the next few years, he served on numerous committees, most notably Club Relations, Centennial, Finance & Investment and Development, where he was Chair. He brought his great knowledge of finance, management and electric energy to greatly help in all areas.

He was President from 2008-2010, and is now a Trustee. Rich and his wife, Jean, became Husband and Wife Lifetime Ouimet Society Members in 2000 and endowed a scholarship in 2004. He has been a long-time Banquet sponsor and sponsor of other Ouimet events. Rich has also secured several other endowed scholarships and banquet sponsors. An initiative of his created the impetus for the Centennial Bag Tag Program.

Barrett is currently employed as the Chief Investment Officer at The Flatley Company and is a long-time member of Charles River Country Club, recently serving as its President. He also served on the Massachusetts Golf Association’s Executive Committee. He and Jean are parents of four children and make their home in Westwood.

PETER MAICH-BANQUET CHAIR IN MEMORIAM

Tonight will be the first time since Arnold Palmer was honored in 1997 that Peter Maich will not be on the head table as Chair of the Annual Banquet.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was greatly saddened with the passing on December 9, 2014 of long-time Director Peter Maich. Mr. Maich served with tremendous distinction as a Ouimet Director since 1995 in a number of roles, but most notably as Chair of the Annual Banquet for 16 years. In recognition of his contributions, The Fund has named Mr. Maich Banquet Chair in Memoriam.

“Peter contributed in so many ways and was such a great friend to the Ouimet Fund and our Scholars. He, as Chair, along with Dick Connolly and Denny Goodrich were the guiding lights in the formative years of our Banquet, which is now the biggest golf dinner in the country. He will be tremendously missed, but always remembered,” said Ouimet Executive Director Bob Donovan.

Mr. Maich was Ouimet Development Chair for several years helping the original campaign, and also served on the Ouimet Society, and other committees. As Banquet Chair, he was instrumental in many of the facets of the event that have made it into the largest golf banquet in the U.S., and developed numerous sponsorships including that of his former company, The TJX Companies. He created an endowed scholarship in his late father’s name and assisted The Fund in various other ways.

He was the 2005 recipient of The Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award and last fall was honored with the Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award. He was a member of Wollaston and Cohasset Golf Clubs. He was also the Ouimet Chair at Wollaston. He is survived by his son, Will.

“We lost a one of a kind individual in Peter Maich. The Ouimet Fund will be forever indebted to Peter for his selfless dedication and commitment to our mission. He was a leader in both his spirit and actions. The Annual Banquet would not be what it is today without his tireless effort and unwavering commitment to making this a successful and sustaining event. Our prayers go out to his son, Will, and his many friends and family,” said Ouimet Fund President Greg Gailius.

“Peter has been a tremendous Ouimet supporter and dedicated champion over the years. He and Denny Goodrich worked on so many Ouimet Fund programs, and they both symbolize the best a volunteer can be. Peter’s presence and input at board meetings throughout the years has been second to none, and his leadership has been an asset across all areas of our organization. We are greatly honored to recognize him,” said Terry Kennedy, the former Ouimet Fund President at the Goodrich Award presentation.

OUR STUDENT SPEAKERRichard Asirifi is a senior at UMass-Lowell and performed his golf service at Worcester Country Club.

In May, Richard will walk across the stage at Tsongas Center, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, just the latest in his long line of accomplishments. A proud veteran member of WCC’s caddie corps, Richard has ably traversed the hills of Worcester CC for 11 years, following in the footsteps of older brother Jason, a Ouimet Alum. A native of Ghana, Asirifi immigrated to America with his parents and two brothers at the age of eight, quickly adapting to a new culture, lifestyle…and climate. The family eventually settled within the Ghanian enclave in Worcester, a stone’s throw from WCC, in search of stronger education and a better future. Asirifi is well-known to Ouimet Fund staff having taken part in the NFL Alumni Golf Classic, as well as caddied in the Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am. At school, he is active in the gospel chorus and regularly tutors students within his academic discipline. He also has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, having launched his own urban clothing line. He has received four endowed scholarships during his time as a Scholar: the Heritage Scholarship and Eddie Lowery Award (given annually to the top caddie throughout all clubs) in 2013-2014 and the Fred and Marion MacQuarrie Scholarship Heritage Scholarship during this current academic year. His talk tonight promises to take the audience on a journey from Ghana to America with twists and turns, trials and tribulations along the way. His tale is one of hope, perseverance, sacrifice and persistence.

Arnold Palmer – January 2, 1997The “new era” of Ouimet Fund Banquets began when Arnold Palmer accepted the invitation of his financial advisor and Ouimet Fund Trustee Richard F. Connolly, Jr. to become the Annual Banquet’s guest speaker and first Ouimet Award recipient. Mr. Palmer’s appearance helped bring the Ouimet Fund to a new level, and since that time, the event has become the top golf dinner in America. Brian Leary of WCVB-TV was Master of Ceremonies and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino began his tenure as Honorary Chair. The following year, $100,000 was added to the Deacon Palmer Scholarship when Mr. Palmer was honored at a Ryder Cup concert at Boston’s Symphony Hall. In 2000, Mr. Palmer succeeded Gene Sarazen as Honorary Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. Gene Sarazen – January 6, 1998Gene Sarazen was a close friend of Francis Ouimet, and was forever grateful for advice and counsel Mr. Ouimet gave him. He appeared many times in Ouimet fundraising events and twice was speaker at this Banquet. His famous double eagle at Augusta’s 15th hole helped him win the 1935 Masters Tournament, and he made the only other double eagle of his life at a Ouimet Annual Meeting. He served as a pallbearer at Ouimet’s funeral in 1967, and then played in an exhibition to kick off the first Ouimet Memorial Tournament in 1968 and was Honorary Chairman until his death in 1999. Although he could not attend the 1998 Banquet, he taped a special message and his granddaughter, Pam Ilnicki, accepted for him. Former Sports Illustrated Publisher Mark Mulvoy served as guest speaker. Mike Lynch of WCVB-TV was Master of Ceremonies. The Banquet was held at Lombardo’s restaurant in Randolph, MA.

Ben Crenshaw – March 11, 1999Ben Crenshaw was the third Ouimet Award Honoree as The Fund celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Westin Copley Place Hotel. He also accepted a plaque establishing the Charlie Crenshaw Scholarship, saying it would make a sick old man very happy. His dad died five weeks later. In September of that year, he returned to Brookline, serving as Ryder Cup Captain and recalling Francis Ouimet as his team rallied from the greatest deficit ever to win back The Cup. The Ryder Cup caddies presented him with a Ouimet and Lowery statuette as a special gift just after the victory. A noted historian, he authored a foreword to the 2004 re-printing of Francis Ouimet’s autobiography, “A Game of Golf.” Brian Leary of WCVB-TV served as Master of Ceremonies and Bob McDonald, a member of the original group of Ouimet Scholars in 1949, was the 50th anniversary speaker.

Curtis Strange – March 22, 2000Curtis Strange had just been named Captain of the 2001 Ryder Cup when he accepted the Ouimet Fund’s invitation to be 2000 Honoree. In opening his talk, he spoke of the similarities to Mr. Ouimet in that they had both won the U.S. Open in a Playoff at The Country Club, and in which they had beaten the reigning British Open champions. The event was held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place for the first time. The first Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Awards were presented that evening to Charlie Fox, Dennett Goodrich and Mark Robinson and Mike Lynch of WCVB-TV was Master of Ceremonies.

Eddie Lowery/Ken Venturi – March 21, 2001In 2001, the Ouimet Fund had co-honorees, Ken Venturi and his late mentor and sponsor, Eddie Lowery. It was one of the most emotional evenings in Banquet history and was held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. Mr. Venturi spoke of Mr. Lowery and Mr. Ouimet, who was a friend and his financial advisor. He also created a permanent award in the name of his great mentor, Byron Nelson.

In accepting for her late father, Cynthia Wilcox spoke of how things may have been very different if Francis had not “stayed with Eddie” as his caddie for the 1913 US Open playoff, one of the great moments in golf history. Eddie was a lifelong friend of Francis Ouimet. He was a strong contributor to the Ouimet Fund and he and Bill Danforth contributed the painting of Francis Ouimet in the USGA Museum Ouimet Room. Mr. Lowery’s widow, Margaret, endowed a Ouimet Scholarship in his name for the Scholar who is considered the best caddie. In 1999, Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery were inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame. The Fund presented its Connolly Distinguished Service Awards to Andrew Curcio, Wendell Fitch, and Dick Stimets. Bob Lobel of WBZ-TV served as Master of Ceremonies.



George H.W. Bush – May 30, 2002This was one of the largest golf dinners ever in America and was then considered the finest event in Ouimet Fund history. It was truly a gala occasion and the first time the banquet had a 140-page full-color printed dinner program, and the beginning of the “President’s Circle” sponsors. Ouimet Trustee and long-time supporter, the late Raymond Faxon wowed the audience in accepting the Connolly Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Bush was touched to create an endowed scholarship in the name of his father, former US Senator Prescott Bush. Mr. Bush and Mr. Ouimet had worked together at Brown Brothers Harriman. Mr. Bush charmed the audience with warm golf humor and memories of Mr. Ouimet and closed with a poignant wish that the attendees’ lives, “be filled with birdies and eagles.” A special highlight was a video congratulations to his dad by George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States. Governor Jane Swift joined Mayor Menino as Honorary Co-Chair. Mike Lynch of WCVB-TV was Master of Ceremonies.

Chi Chi Rodriguez – July 15, 2003Chi Chi Rodriguez’s acceptance of the Ouimet award was one of the most emotional evenings in the history of the Banquet. An audience of 1,100 was on hand at the Boston Marriott Copley Place for the only Ouimet Annual Banquet ever held during the summer months. Mr. Rodriguez spoke of how he’d been helped as a young man, and how Mr. Ouimet had helped so many. Chi Chi chose to designate a scholarship in the name of Ed Dudley, long-time pro at Dorado Beach CC who had been his mentor. The Dudley Award is for an inner-city Ouimet Scholar. Mike Dowling of WCVB-TV was Master of Ceremonies for the night. Former Ouimet and Massachusetts Golf Association President William C. Foley was presented the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award and the MGA was also honored for its Centennial.

Nancy Lopez – April 21, 2004LPGA Commissioner Emeritus Charlie Mechem made his first appearance as Ouimet Banquet Master of Ceremonies as Nancy Lopez was honored. Ms. Lopez chose to designate a scholarship in her late father Domingo’s name, and it has since been awarded every year to a female Ouimet Scholar from an inner-city theme continued as the Tiger Woods Foundation Award was announced that evening. Former Ouimet Fund President Walt Lankau, the long-time Stow Acres owner and Marathon host, was presented the Connolly Distinguished Service Award. The Banquet was held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

Greg Norman – April 27, 2005The Ouimet Banquet moved to the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in 2005 and Greg Norman was honored. The Great White Shark charmed the large group and Golf Channel showed footage of Mr. Norman’s press conference the following evening on Golf Central. Mr. Norman designated a scholarship in the name of his mentor, Australian club pro legend Charlie Earp. Long-time Banquet Chair Peter Maich was presented the Connolly Distinguished Service Award. Brian Leary served as Master of Ceremonies for the fifth time. The Fund announced it would award $1 Million in scholarships that year and also launched a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its Bag Tag club support program.

Peter Jacobsen – May 9, 2006The Ouimet Fund often bills these Banquets as “Golf ’s Most Entertaining Evening,” and, in Peter Jacobsen, honored the game’s greatest entertainer. Humor was a big part of the evening, as, in addition to Mr. Jacobsen’s rollicking talk, the audience was treated to a surprise appearance by Foot-Joy’s “Sign Boy,” Matt Griesser, a Jacobsen sidekick on several Golf Channel programs.

The Boston Convention & Exhibition Center was again the site. The Banquet theme music was introduced for the first time along with Jacobsen’s “Jake Trout and the Flounders” tracks. The Greatest Game Ever Played author Mark Frost was presented the Connolly Distinguished Service Award. John Dennis of WEEI served as Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Jacobsen designated a scholarship in his dad, Erling’s name.



Barbara & Jack Nicklaus – May 14, 2007The Barbara and Jack Nicklaus Banquet was the largest event in Ouimet Fund history. It was believed to be the largest sports banquet of any kind in Boston and largest golf dinner ever in the United States. Mrs. Nicklaus was a very gracious speaker and the audience was thrilled to hear from Jack Nicklaus. A truly special moment in the evening was the presentation of the Ellen Hines Scholarship plaque to Boston native John Hines. Mr. Hines has worked with Mr. Nicklaus for 26 years and the late Ellen Hines was very close to Mrs. Nicklaus. Mrs. Hines had attended Regis College, and the Regis Glee Club sang the National Anthem to open the evening. Charlie Mechem, LPGA Commissioner Emeritus, was Master of Ceremonies for the second time and was tremendously well received by the audience. Mr. Mechem is a personal business advisor to Mr. Nicklaus and the MC of the Memorial Tournament’s honoree induction ceremony. Ouimet Director Tom Martin was presented the Connolly Distinguished Service Award for the many years his company, Cramer, has produced the Ouimet Banquet’s videos and other communication videos.

Gary Player – May 19, 2008Many long-time Banquet attendees consider the Ouimet Fund’s Gary Player dinner one of our most memorable evenings. Mr. Player traveled 22,000 miles round trip from South Africa to speak and be honored. He selected his late parents, Harry & Muriel Player, as the scholarship designee, and just after starting his talk stunned the audience with the surprise announcement that he would add $100,000 to the new endowment. A highly polished speaker, his talk had both numerous golf jokes and closed with a strong message of how much he loved America. Dan Roche of WBZ-TV made his debut as Master of Ceremonies. Former Ouimet President Anne Marie Tobin was presented the Connolly Distinguished Service Award. Long-time MGA, NEGA, and USGA volunteer Harry McCracken was “re-presented” the USGA’s Joe Dey Award.

Tom Watson – April 27, 2009Tom Watson was the Ouimet Honoree on an evening that celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Ouimet Fund. Bob McDonald, a member of the first class of Ouimet Scholars in 1949, recalled the early years. Long-time Ouimet Banquet Vice Chair Denny Goodrich, who would retire after 37 years on the Ouimet Board that fall, was recognized for his many years of involvement in the banquet. Former Ouimet President Ted Hansberry was presented the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. Rich Lerner of Golf Channel served as Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Watson was very warm and gracious, speaking to the need to preserve caddie programs. He designated a permanent scholarship to be named after Stan Thirsk, the pro at Kansas City Country Club who was a mentor to Watson in his youth. Three months after the banquet the 59-year-old Watson captured the golf world by storm to lead the British Open until a final-hole bogey forced a playoff, which he eventually lost to Stewart Cink.

Annika Sorenstam – May 10, 2010Annika Sorenstam, the winner of ten major championships, was the Ouimet Honoree at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. The Connolly Group – Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was presenting sponsor. In a special presentation, a permanent scholarship was created in the name of Ely Callaway, the late founder and Chair of Callaway Golf. Mr. Callaway was a long-time sponsor of and mentor to Ms. Sorenstam. LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan and Leslie Greis, the Boston-based LPGA Board Chair, were among the Head Table dignitaries. The Fund also recognized the Curtis Cup which was held at Essex County Club that year. Other highlights of the evening included presentation of the 15th Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award to former Ouimet Scholarship recipient Peter S. Lynch. Mr. Lynch is well known as the legendary Fidelity Magellan Fund Manager and has been a great supporter of the Ouimet Fund over the years and is also a Ouimet Trustee. LPGA Commissioner Emeritus Charlie Mechem served as Master of Ceremonies for the third time.



Mark O’Meara – May 7, 2012Mark O’Meara, a tremendously consistent player and winner of two major championships, was the honoree at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. Golf Channel’s Brian Hammons served admirably as Master of Ceremonies. The Connolly Group of Morgan Stanley was again the presenting sponsor. Mr. O’Meara captivated the crowd with his many candid stories of his time in golf, from high school and college, through his Major wins and today with his current time on the Champions Tour. Mark was also one of the most engaging honorees we’ve ever had at the podium, and he also spent considerable time chatting with each top sponsor group during the group photo sessions. The evening also featured the presentation of the Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award to former Ouimet President Ted Highberger and a fine summary of Ouimet activities by Ouimet President Dick Reilly of Brae Burn and a special video overview of the planned Ouimet 100 activities. Mr. O’Meara asked that the scholarship created by the proceeds of the dinner be named after his late father, Robert F. O’Meara. Mark played in the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach with his Dad as his amateur partner several times, including one golden year in which they made the pro-am cut and Mark won the individual title.

Francis Ouimet – May 15, 2013The Centennial of Francis Ouimet’s historic 1913 US Open victory, considered the most important moment in golf history, was celebrated at the Ouimet Centennial Gala on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. There was an audience of over 2,100 which was a sell-out and believed to be the biggest-ever at a golf dinner. One of the many special highlights was the presentation of its Distinguished Service Award to Centennial Honorary Chair Arnold Palmer. Joining Mr. Palmer on the stage were several other top golf stars, including Peter Jacobsen, author Mark Frost, movie producer Bill Paxton and the Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner, who served as emcee for the second time.

In a slight departure from the normal Ouimet Banquet, the Centennial was celebrated with the honoring of Mr. Ouimet himself with the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf. A special plaque was presented to Sheila Macomber, the granddaughter of Mr. Ouimet, in recognition of the Centennial and his great contributions to golf and the Ouimet Fund. A presentation was also made to Cynthia Wilcox, the daughter of Mr. Ouimet’s famed caddie, Eddie Lowery.

The Gala also included a memorable and rousing address by student speaker Julia McCarthy, a presentation by Mike Trostel, USGA Museum Historian/Curator, a Ouimet Scholarship alumnus; and video messages from R&A Secretary Peter Dawson, PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem, former Banquet Ouimet Honorees Ben Crenshaw, Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Gary Player, and Ouimet Alumnus Allen Doyle.

This past February, the Ouimet Fund planned to honor William C. “Bill” Van Faasen with its Spirit of Golf Award at a special dinner. As was the case for a majority of the winter, snow blanketed Greater Boston necessitating the unfortunate cancellation of the event. While the proverbial show didn’t go on, the event was a smashing success as over $250,000 was raised towards an endowed scholarship in Bill’s name, specifically earmarked for inner-city youth. The Fund graciously salutes the many companies, organizations and individuals who supported the endeavor. Below is a snapshot into who Mr. Van Faasen is and how deserving he was to receive the Spirit of Golf Award.

Bill Van Faasen has steadily ascended to the highest levels in the realm of both business and philanthropy. He’s regarded as an innovative and leading member of the health insurance industry, having spent nearly 25 years in senior leadership positions with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts after spending 20 years at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan. He served as BCBSMA’s President and CEO for over one decade and is currently its Chair Emeritus.

Van Faasen has stood out as a champion of equality, learning the values and benefits of integration from his days growing up in metro Detroit. Upon his arrival in Boston, to the he wasted little time becoming a key and pivotal player within the community, taking on leadership roles with Black and White in Boston Coming Together and then Black and White on Green. The latter took business and community leaders of different races from throughout the city and brought them together through a series of exciting events and golf outings. In recent years, he has been instrumental in the expansion and success of The First Tee, never wavering in his support of grassroots movements.

He has served as a Board Member and Board Chairperson of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, the Boston Minuteman Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Boston Private Industry Council, the Initiative for a New Economy (INE), and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation.

In the golfing world Bill has served on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Golf Association since 2005. He was a driving force and first Chairperson of Black and White on Green, an initiative to unite leaders of the business community with minority business leaders. This program is regarded as the predecessor to the City of Boston’s Summer Golf Management venture which the Ouimet Fund has collaborated with since 1996. He has played in many MGA events including the State Amateur, Senior Amateur, Four Ball, Senior Four Ball, Father and Son, and this year the Super Senior. He served as General Chairman of the 2010 USGA Curtis Cup held at the Essex County Club, and has also served as Golf Chair at Essex. In addition to the Essex County Club, he is also a member at Old Sandwich Golf Club, The Loxahatchee Club and the Medalist Golf Club. He also belongs to the Hickory Shafts, the New England Senior Golf Association, the United States Senior Golf Association, and the Society of Seniors. He has played in the Lesley Cup as a member of the Massachusetts Team since 2001. At the Ouimet Fund’s 2014 Annual Meeting, he was elected to its Board of Directors.

Van Faasen has seemingly run out of space on his walls and shelves as he’s been repeatedly lauded for his values, leadership, and contribution to the community. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Health Care from Health Care For All, the Maimonides Award from the Anti-Defamation League, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the New England Council’s New Englander of the Year Award, and recipient of the Distinguished Bostonian from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his contributions to the community, BCBSMA established the William C. Van Faasen Community Service Sabbatical Program, allowing one BCBSMA employee per year a leave of absence to work for a charitable organization. Bill and his wife Jane, a fellow Michigan native, make their home on the North Shore, They are the proud parents of two sons, John and Billy and a daughter Elly. Married for 41 years, the Van Faasens like nothing more than spending time with their three grandsons.

We are proud to say that the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Endowed Scholarship Program has now grown to nearly 120 permanent awards. The “endowed scholarship creators” see these special awards as a wonderful way to permanently associate one’s self, an organization, or a loved one, with golf, education, and young people.

In addition to a flexible agreement program, the creators of endowed scholarships receive full tax deductibility, have the name of their award listed on a “gold leaf” board at Golf House on the grounds of TPC Boston, attend a special donor/recipient reception and are given a report on the special individual who receives the award each year along with the financial performance of their permanent endowment. There is also a special endowed brochure prepared each year that describes the honoree of each endowed award and includes the special parameters of the specific award, along with a photo of the honoree and annual award recipient.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the memberships of nearly 100 clubs from all corners of the Commonwealth who have annually supported our Bag Tag program over the years. Since 1955, members make a tax-deductible donation and receive their Ouimet Bag Tag for the season. For six decades now, the tags have become synonomous with The Fund and through the years, as donations have risen so have scholarship awards. We are proud to say that The Fund annually commits 100% of all Bag Tag donations as the first dollars in the annual Scholarship.

Clubs across the state have the opportunity to distinguish themselves and receive special recognition within the upgraded Centennial Bag Tag program. With an eye toward $2 Million in annual Scholarships in the near future, these clubs have made the commitment in year one of a $75 Bag Tag and to incrememntally increase to $100 over five years. You will notice these beautifully engraved metal tags on golf bags across at many clubs. Also, the Ouimet Fund makes special Francis & Eddie statuette presentations (pictured below) to these memberships to acknowledge their commitment to the program.

We thank the 26 Centennial Club memberships who display their tag proudly and the many Sponsor Program clubs who support The Fund annually. Another note of gratitude is extended to the supportive professionals from the NEPGA who set aside staff time each spring to administer tags onto the bags at their club – a critical piece of this fundraising and communication effort.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 by a group of friends of Francis Ouimet and the Massachu-setts Golf Association. Since the day that he insisted that Eddie Lowery carry his bag in the 1913 U.S. Open, Mr. Ouimet was known for his interest in helping young people. The Ouimet Fund has continued that legacy proudly for over sixty-five years. Since 1949, over $28 Million in need-based college tuition assistance has been awarded to young people who have given at least two years of service to golf as caddies or in pro shop or course superintendent operations in Massachusetts.

The Ouimet Scholarship is unique in that it is renewable for up to four years. Ouimet awards range from $1,500 to $20,000 per year, depending on need in our competitive evaluation process. The value of the award over four years can be $10,000 to $40,000, or more. Over 5,200 young people have received Ouimet Scholarships, and many have gone on to prestigious positions of leadership in business and professional careers. Ouimet Alumni also stay actively involved in The Fund. Several former presidents are past Scholarship winners, and there are five members of the current Board of Directors who are former Scholars. Alumni also participate in our Golf Marathon, serve as Ouimet Chairs at their home clubs, and help in many other ways.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is a 501(c) (3) organization. It is supported by contributions from Alumni, golfers, clubs, corporations and golf organizations throughout the country.

THE CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGNOver one hundred years since Francis Ouimet’s U.S. Open victory, we celebrate the moment American golf was born, and Mr. Ouimet’s great contributions to golf and his legacy, the Ouimet Fund.

Led by a Campaign Planning Committee, the goal of the Centennial Campaign: Investing in Lifetimes is to expand our financial resources by a minimum of $5 Million in order to reach an annual Scholarship total of $2 Million awarded, with an increase in inner-city awareness and aid. With a fantastic response from Friends of The Fund, the Campaign is over the three-quarter mark at nearly $3.8 Million raised and 25 new Endowed Scholarships created.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A OUIMET SCHOLARSHIPAll Ouimet Scholarship candidates must have performed at least two years of service to golf as caddies, or in pro shop or course superintendent operations at any golf course in Massachusetts. The candidate must also plan to attend an accred-ited institution of undergraduate higher education. Students may apply as seniors in high school or during a college career. Applications can now be completed online at www.ouimet.org.

Ouimet Scholarships are awarded according to demonstrated financial need or on an “Honorary” (no financial award) basis. Applicants are judged on academic achievement and potential, leadership, school and community activities, interviews, essays, motivation, character, integrity, golf service, and various recommendations. The Ouimet Fund is an equal opportu-nity scholarship program and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, religion or ethnic origin.

OUIMET ALUMNI TAKE PRIDE IN GIVING BACKThe goal of the Ouimet Alumni Association is to re-engage fellow Alumni while offering networking opportunities for Alumni through this great support system. The program, focusing on Alumni participation from 5,200 individuals across the 65 years of alumni, is a vibrant “family” driven by a dedicated group of Alumni Champion Scholars. You don’t have to live in Greater Boston or even on the East Coast to connect with fellow Ouimet Alums. Let us help you come together, to share common experiences and swap stories from the past. In 2013, Team Ouimet was officially established as an “active” way to raise money for the Ouimet Scholarships! A unique campaign run by one or many individuals participating in an activity of their choice, this concept has taken interactive fundraising to an entirely new level. The program is a dynamic new form of fundraising for The Fund, which also allows friends and supporters to make pledges in support of a great effort, while introducing them to Ouimet and its mission of helping kids afford a college education. We are open to ideas of anyone with one mission: to give back to the game of golf!

Here are some examples of Team Ouimet campaigns benefitting The Fund: • Alum Erik Robinson ’10 climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, to raise over $2,300!• Alum Chris Rumul ’05 and John Weinsheim ran the 2014 Boston Marathon, while collectively raising nearly $21,000! • 10 Scholars, Alumni and friends raised $2,250 for their VIP caddie spots in the Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am! • Alum Keith Rourke ‘05 organized a memorial golf tournament with over $16,000 in proceeds donated to The Fund!

Key endeavors such as the Golf Marathon, America’s largest, the Annual Banquet and The Fund’s “bread and butter” the Bag Tag program have all seen unprecedented support. The number of Lifetime Members and endowed scholarships has also steadily risen as The Fund’s constituency has risen to the occasion year after year, decade after decade.
