Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival offers something for everyone

Now in its 36th year, The OceanBeach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Offremains one of San Diego’s best com-munity events. With its mix of sun, surf, food and music, it’s safe to say there isnothing else like it. More than 70,000are expected to enjoy the good vibes, great weather and top-rate performersalong the town’s downtown corridor.

Eventgoers strolling down NewportAvenue and its cross-streets will find tonsof free activities to stimulate the sensesalong with the fresh sea air. Meanwhile, more than 250 vendors and artisanswill be on hand, offering foods fromaround the world, arts and crafts fromjewelry to paintings and even a fewunique rides for kids of all ages. The fair’slocation, both right on the water and inthe heart of the town, as well as itsneighborhood spirit, make it a uniqueand important happening on the yearlycalendar

“There’s a great community feel tothis,” said Ocean Beach MainStreetAssociation executive director DennyKnox, who has been with the street fairsince the very beginning. “We havealmost every nonprofit in the area par-ticipating. This is a huge fundraiser for somany of them, including us. There’ssomething for everyone. There’s muralsto paint, a hamburger eating contestand so much more.”

This year’s theme is “It’s All Aboutthe Music,” so naturally the event has aterrific list of musical performers. Thecenterpiece to the event will be an inter-

active music area located on the 4900block of Newport Avenue, sponsored bylocal full-service music facility Rock andRoll San Diego.

“This is going to be amazing,” saidKnox. “They’ll have all kinds of musicalinstruments and instructors there andshow anybody how to perform a song

in ten minutes.” How realistic is it to think that some-

one can play in ten minutes? “It hasworked every time we try it,” said Rockand Roll San Diego owner Mark Lang-ford. “We break the song down to itsbasics, such as the root of each chord, and many songs only have two or threechords,” he explained.

No musical skills are needed? “No, justthe desire to try,” Langford said. “Thesinging is a bit trickier, but we pick songsthat most people have heard before, sothey already have it in their head, andwe give them a lyric sheet with thewords. We also try to pick songs with afew words that repeat,” he commented.

There will also be a musical “pettingzoo.”

“That’s a term we came up with,” hecontinued. “It’s an area filled with differ-

Big Mountain headlines OB Street Fair The long wait is over. After 13 years,

Ocean Beach Street Fair headliner BigMountain returns with a new album,“Perfect Summer.” Best known for their1994 No. 6 hit, “Baby I Love Your Way,”Big Mountain has always been a majordraw, particularly in outdoor settings, where their reggae music can be heardto full effect.

“Big Mountain took a break in about

the year 2003,” bandleader Joaquin(Quino) McWhinney explained. “I wentback to school and settled into a careerin teaching, and life just sort of tookover. We made several attempts to rekin-dle the fire, but without a label or prop-er management, we couldn't find the ini-tiative to get the band back together,” hesaid.

The new album has been composedand produced within the last three years.“It coincided with my move to Ensenada,

where I now live with my family,”McWhinney said.

Currently in the middle of album-release events, McWhinney is happy tobe performing in Ocean Beach. “OceanBeach holds a very special place in myheart,” he said. “I have always been eas-ily seduced by the counterculture move-ment. My paternal grandmother was ahard-core hippie and a big influence in

There is plenty to keep attendeesof this year’s street fair occupied, but nothing compares with theday's signature event, the ChiliCook-Off, which takes place at Vet-erans Plaza at the foot of NewportAvenue. If you’re a chili eater, thereis no better place in San Diego tosample different varieties of thedelicacy.

Tasting begins at 11 a.m.,though the line starts forming at10 a.m. Tickets for tasting andjudging the various entrants' chilirun $2 for two servings, or you canget a people’s choice ticket for $20allowing you to sample all of theteams' chili.

There will be almost two dozencompetitors in two categories, restaurant and amateur, with judg-ing based on consistency, smell, color and taste. Both meat and veg-etarian chili will be available. Butyou’re advised to get there early.Even with almost 60 gallons ofchili from local restaurant ShadesOceanfront Bistro and Craves Cafealongside 10 gallons each from thecontestants, it’s all gone by 2 p.m.

The event was founded in 1984by current Ocean Beach Main-Street Association board memberMike Akey, who comes from a long

line of chili enthusiasts, includinghis father Angie Scaramuzzo. Heremains the event's head judge ona committee of 10.

Months of preparation go intothe event. But why a chili cook-offas opposed to another taste treat?

“We’ve been doing this for morethan 30 years, so at this point, it'stradition,” Akey said. “I could seehaving beef stew or corn on thecob in the Midwest, but here on thecoast, we like our chili,” he said. Those who like their food spicyshould look for the thermometersin front of the booths, with theheat index clearly marked.

According to Akey, you can gen-erally tell who has the best chili bythe length of the lines in front oftheir stalls, but sometimes the chiliitself is second to its surroundings, with teams going out of their wayto decorate their workspace anddress in costumes.

“People definitely go all out for

this and really make an effort,”Akey said. “We even have awardsfor that, a Most Spirited Award andone for Best Booth as well.”

After all these years and despitemonths of organizational work,Akey still gets enjoyment out of thecook-off.

“I like the camaraderie,” he said.“I like the way people get togetherand support the teams, all in thename of raising money for theannual fireworks.”

Does he still enjoy chili? “I like chili. Once a year, thank

you,” Akey laughed.

Upgraded kids zone to be more interactiveThe Wonderland area, a-k-a

the kids zone, located at the4800 block of Newport Avenue,is getting a new look for thisyear's street fair.

“It’s not Ferris wheels andstuff like that, it’s more interac-tive,” said organizer GregKnight, owner of San DiegoKids Party Rentals. The area'slandmark giant inflatable slidewill remain in place, but ratherthan a haphazard mix of thisand that, this year will featurealmost a dozen inflatable attrac-tions.

The area is named for anamusement park that oncestood in Ocean Beach, and thenew upgraded Wonderland willbe a place where parents canallow the kids, ages 3 to 10, tolet off a little steam. There willalso be a toddler play area.

The area's amenities are alsokid friendly, with lots of treatsavailable, from healthful optionsto summertime favorites likecotton candy and snow cones. There will even be a magician, face painting and mimes as wellas kid-friendly music at 10 a.m.from the duo Neck & Neck at thenearby Wonderland stage. The

Santana Brothers, comprisingstudents from Point Loma, willappear at 6 p.m.

But there will be plenty for allages as well. The showpiece ofthe area will easily be theRugged Warrior Mega ObstacleCourse, a 120-foot inflatablechallenge, with eight separatesections. The biggest spectatordraw will be the Wipeout game, which, just like the TV show, hasthe contestants pitted againstmoving obstacles.

“That was such a huge hitlast year,” Knight said. “Peopleloved to take part, but everyoneenjoyed watching as well.”

Meanwhile, there will also bethe cliffhanger slide, a wall forrock climbing, an infinite obsta-cle course and a mechanicalshark ride.

Even with all those attrac-tions, the area’s biggest draw forparents may be more down toearth.

“There will be a lot moreplaces for parents to sit, moretables and so on, this year, espe-cially in the toddler zone, wherethere will be special slides andthings set up,” said Knight.“That way, the parents can relaxand watch while the kids gocrazy.”

Artists Alley is full of unique treasures

Ocean Beach is known as an artis-tic community, so it’s only naturalthat the street fair’s Artists Alley beextra-special. Full of one-of-a-kindtreasures, it is indeed one of theevent's crown jewels. It’s the perfectopportunity to find a great gift, withspecial care taken by organizers toinclude only handmade items andfeature as many local artisans as pos-sible.

It crosses two blocks of CableStreet at Newport Avenue, wherefairgoers will find everything fromjewelry to paintings, clothing tomusical instruments and skin careand bath items, all hand-crafted andwith the artist in attendance.

“It makes the whole area specialto have just things made by hand,

things you won’t find anywhere else. It’s such a colorful area to wanderthrough as well,” said Ocean BeachMainStreet Association executivedirector Denny Knox.

Among the highlights this yearare local San Diego musician Chris-tian Schinelli, who will showcase his'60s and '70s hand screen-printedart, Brellas n Fans, featuring hand-painted umbrellas, fans and scrolls, and Surf Screen organics, whichmakes natural sun screen and lipbalm products.

But the winner in the mostunique contest surely has to be Liv-ing Air Ware, which offers a range ofearrings, magnets and ornaments“adorned with living, breathingTillandsia (“air plants”).

Clearly, the street fair’s ArtistsAlley has something for just abouteveryone!

Although there is plenty to see anddo at the street fair, the biggest attractionis the music. Attendees will find a widevariety of musical styles scattered acrossthe event's five stages.

Booked by Ted Wigler, who handlesthe same duties at Winston’s and the710 Beach Club, and Michael Head, ofHead Trap Recording Studios, the fairwill feature music from more than threedozen performers.

Wigler notes that picking the rightartists and staying within budget can bedifficult.

“I have people hit me up all year, localand national, that would love to play thisevent,” Wigler said. “But unfortunately, the budget that we are constrained toonly allows us to pick from the local pool.Dealing with these artists is a bit likeherding cats, though we have beendoing it for so long we've become accus-tomed to it and speak their language,”he said.

“This year's theme to the event is 'It'sAll About the Music,' Head points out.“With that in mind, I tried to find semi-nal SD beach bands. Not surf music perse, but bands that have played, lived andworked within the beach areas.”

Yes, it helps for an artist to have a localzip code. “We definitely try to find asmany OB bands that fit within the stageand event themes as possible,” Headsaid. “Artists like Kris Wott, Soul Ablaze,Alfred Howard of Rebecca Jade and theCold Fact, as well as Jefferson Jay, all fit

this description.” The stages mix a variety of artists

with a bit of a theme to them: The ArtistAlley stage features a heavy blues influ-ence and roots influence. The bill will betopped by The Shifty Eyed Dogs (6 p.m.),with highlights set to include sociallyconscious rockers Rhythm and theMethod (noon) and gypsy-inspired quin-tet Quel Bordel.

The Wonderland stage includessinger-songwriters and acoustic acts, with featured sets from The Payback, featuring John Miller (1 p.m.), andyoung rockers The Santana Brothers (5p.m.).

The Ragalan Stage features Ameri-cana and alternative rock, including aset from rock group RDG, featuringdrum legend Bill Ray (noon) and Irishinspired quartet The Fooks (6 p.m.)among the best bets. Meanwhile, theIndie Yoga 92107 OB stage has a focuson Ocean Beach artists, including suchfavorites as Chuck Schiele-led indie rockcombo Bad Science Fiction (4:30 p.m.)and Super Unloader (6 p.m.)

The main stage is possibly the mostdiverse, set to include music from plat-inum-selling reggae artists Big Moun-tain (7 p.m.), rockers Neighbors to theNorth (1:20 p.m.) and Americana-basedsextet The Country Rockin’ Rebels(12:10 p.m.).

Wigler's favorite thing about the streetfair is a continued sense of community.

“It’s seeing people who don't live inOcean Beach anymore come back yearafter year just for this event. It always

seems like a reunion for me,” he said. Head agrees. “I love just seeing the

people coming together for an amazingevent and cause: the OB fireworks. That'sthe main reason we do this. And whenthose fireworks go off on July Fourth andeveryone is out on the beach with theirfamilies, the kids are running and laugh-ing. It's like, yep: worth it again.”

Rebecca Jade & The Cold FactThere’s a new wave of soul- and R&B-

inspired groups performing in San Diegovenues, and leading the movement isRebecca Jade, who performs on the92107 stage at noon.

Blessed with an incendiary voice thatcan go from zero to 60 in a few notes,Jade fronts a terrific funk-soul combo,

the Cold Fact, which includes the likes ofkeyboardist Tim Felten and drummerJake Najor, with a sound and energy nottoo far off from the likes of Chaka Khanor Patti Labelle.

Jade says she enjoys the street fairvibe, “especially being here in San Diego.I love that we can perform in beautiful

my life. “Ocean Beach back in the day

was the closest thing in SanDiego to [the] '60s and '70s.Being a teenager of the '80s, Ireally resented how much thingschanged in our country in a mat-ter of a few short years. OceanBeach was the only way toescape the Reagan revolutionthat dominated my adolescence.”

Ocean Beach also played amajor role in McWhinney'smusical beginnings. “It was alsowhere the reggae scene was pret-ty much based. My good friend

Bill Winston opened up Win-ston’s Beach Club right in timefor one of the first bands, Shiloh,to take the stage. We really honedour skills in the club.”

That said, McWhinney givesthe edge to outdoor gigs when itcomes to performing.

“It really depends on the gig,”he said. “Great clubs are very funto play. But being in front of largecrowds is also an exhilaratingexperience.

“In both cases, it’s possible tohave a bad sound system, whichreally is about the only thing thatcan make a gig unbearable. We've even played in a typhoononce in Japan – and it was ablast!”

weather most of the time and be part ofthe festivities. The view from the stagegives a different perspective. There'ssomething about seeing people enjoy-ing themselves. It's a very uniting expe-rience, and for some reason, being out-side gives me more of a sense ofcommunity.”

A Tribute to Chelsea FlorThe year's most touching perfor-

mance will be the tribute to the latesinger-songwriter Chelsea Flor, a regu-lar performer at the street fair and localvenues.

Organized by close friend Sheri Stoltz-

fus, the one-hour slot, beginning at 11a.m. on the Wonderland Stage, will takethe place of Flor’s annual set, withlocals performing a mix of Flor’s origi-nals and some of her favorite coversongs.

Flor died of breast cancer last Decem-ber.

Artists scheduled to take part includeBrenda Panneton, Sweet Joyce Ann,Crystal Pollard and Marian Yamauchi.

“She had been holding the same timeslot at the Street Fair for several years,”Stoltzfus explained. “[The artists] willbe helping me share her original musicand some of the other music that sheloved.”

Considering Flor’s love for the area, this is truly a fitting tribute.

It would be impossible to put onan event like the street fair withoutvolunteers. Responsible for every-thing from picking up litter to set-ting up signage, volunteers alsowork in the organizational end, including Michael Head, musicianand owner of Head Trapp MusicStudios.

For the past seven years, Head, along with Ted Wigler, has beeninvolved in all aspects of bookingthe stages and then keeping thingsrunning smoothly on the day.

“It’s seven years,” he said, “butbefore that, I was an unofficialassistant, running various stages, some sound and whatever neededgetting done for the music part ofthe event. Then five years ago, Ibegan arranging stage and sound aswell, buying the talent and arrang-ing stage managers/volunteers forthe entire event.”

As if that weren’t enough, Headalso books the music at the weeklyOB Farmers Market.

His reasoning for wanting to beinvolved in the Street Fair is suc-cinct.

“I always thought it was a coolevent, and I loved being part of themusic and bringing it to OB. There'sno more appreciative of a crowd,”he said.

He encourages others to volun-teer.

“Actually, it's more like oncesomeone is involved, they ask me ifthey can help out again,” he said. “Ieven have my son and wife managea stage, and they have every yearsince I've been the talent buyer. It'salways a family affair in OB.”

With more than a decade ofinvolvement in the street fair, Headcan still see the magic of the event.

“Even though it's been going onfor 36 years, it's still special andamazing that it takes place,” hesaid. “It’s a typical street scene, andthen when everything is in placeand the first few patrons start walk-ing through, the music starts upand the day transitions, it becomesthe OB Street Fair. I love seeing theday unfold, from the wee hours ofstage set-up to the vendors rollingin and the busybody hustle and bus-tle of all the volunteers – [it's] stillsort of surreal to me.”
