FriersonFieldhasbeenthehomeoftheChoctawsforoverthreedecadesthankstothegenerosityofPeteFriersonandFriersonBuildingSupply. Thefacilityfeaturesagrandstandareadirectlybehindhomeplatethatseatsupto1,200people,andanenclosedpressboxatopthegrandstand.Thepressboxhasheatingandcoolingandfeaturestwolevelsofseatingthatcanaccommodateuptotwelvepeopleandtwobroadcastcrews. In2005,acoveredpracticefacilitywasconstructedonthethirdbasesideofthestadium.Thefacilityhasenoughspacefortwofull-lengthbattingcages,aswellasbullpen. Thescoreboardwasaddedin2002givingtheChoctawsoneofthelargerboardsintheAmericanSouthwestConference.

FRIERSON FIELD

RICE FIELD HOuSEOnSeptember25,2014,theRiceFieldHousewasofficiallydedicatedinaceremonyonasun-drencheddayatFriersonField.MCPresidentDr.LeeRoyce,AthleticDirectorMikeJones,HeadCoachBrianOwensandtheentireteamjoineduptopersonallythankMikeRice,a1977MCgraduate,formerChoctawsbaseballstarandmemberoftheuniversity’sBoardofTrustees.AmemberoftheMCSportsHallofFame,Riceplayed100gamesduringhiscareerwiththeChoctaws.Hebattedasolid.332andwasaGulfSouthConferenceleaderinhomeruns,triplesanddoubles.Atonepoint,theMCbaseballplayerrankedNo.2inthenationinhomeruns.

“Wegivethankstothemanwhomadethisvisioncometrue,’’Owenssaid.“Thisisanoutstandingfacility.Infutureyears,MississippiCollegefanswillseefutureMajorLeagueBaseballdraftpicksusingtheRiceFieldHouseatFriersonField.”

Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities inthecountryamongDivisionIIuniversities.TheCharlesandAlineWilliamsStrengthCenterhasmorethan5,000squarefeetofworkingareaandprovidesChoctawathleteswithtopofthelineequipmentnecessarytothesuccessofanathleticsprogram. ThefacilitywasoriginallyfurnishedwithstateoftheartstrengthequipmentmadepossiblebythedonationofMrs.AlineWilliamsinmemoryofherhusbandCharlesH.Williams.In2014,thestrengthcenterunderwentarenovationasnewequipmentwasbrought inthroughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipmentsuchasHammerstrengthequipment,threepowercleanplatforms,rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks,cardiovascularequipment,andnumerousothermachinesforusebyallMississippicollegestudentathletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Halestadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field forrecruitingvisits.Thefieldcanalsobeseenfrominsidetheweightroomwithwalltowallwindowsonthreesidesofthefacility.

MikeJonesissteppingintohis13thseasonasthefull-timeathleticdirectorafteranincrediblysuccessfulbasketballcareeratMC.

Jonesreturnedtohispositionasthefull-timeathleticdirectorin2008aftersteppingdownasheadcoachofthemen’sbasketballprogramfollowingthe2007-08season.Duringhis20-yearcoachingcareer,includingsixteenseasonsatMC,theHallofFamecoachputtogetheracareerrecordof436-130(.770).

Asathleticdirector,JoneshashelpedbuildoneofthetopathleticdepartmentsintheAmericanSouthwestConference.In12yearsoverseeingtheathleticsdepartment,hehasgivenallofMC’spro-gramsanopportunity forsuccesswith improvedfacilities throughfund-raising.Inthe2009-10season,everyMCathleticsteamquali-fiedforpostseasonplay,andallbuttwoteamshadwinningrecords.

Underhisleadership,theathleticsdepartmentwasabletoraiseoveronemilliondollarsfortheadditionofanartificialplayingsurfacetothefootballfieldandnewsurroundingtrackfacility.Underhiswatch,anewsoccercomplexwasconstructedin2005andanewfieldhousewasconstructedin2011.MajorrenovationswerealsomadetoA.E.WoodColiseumin2008.

CoachJoneshelpedraiseover$160,000attheMCAthleticsDinnerin2012,whereformerAtlantaBravespitcherJohnSmoltzwasthekeynotespeaker.TheAthleticsDinnerhashostedspeakerssuchasGeneStallings,OaklandA’soutfielderSethSmith,RobertKhayat,SylvesterCroom,MikeBianco,andJeffBrantley.

Afterafour-yearhiatus,CoachJonesreturnedtothebenchfortwoseasonsfrom2006-08wherehisChoctawscompileda46-9recordoverallanda35-5conferencemark.Inthe‘06-’07season,JonesledMCtoathirdconsecutiveASCChampionshipandatriptothe“SweetSixteen”oftheNCAADivisionIIITournament.

InhisfirstroundasheadcoachoftheChoctaws,JonesledMCto14consecutivewinningseasonsoverall,includingfivestraightNCAATournamentappearancesathisalmamater.JonesledMCtofourASCchampionshipsin1998,1999,2002,and2007.Inthe2007season,theChoctawsreachedashighasa#3nationalranking.

CoachJonesearnedthreeASCCoachoftheYearhonorsin1998,1999, and 2007, and his players consistently appeared on theAll-ConferenceandAll-Academicteamsattheendoftheseason.Emphasizingdefense,theChoctawsledtheASCinscoringandfieldgoalpercentagedefensein2007.

Mikemade themove toMississippiCollege followinga four-yearstint atCopiah-LincolnCommunityCollegewhere he dominatedthestateandearnednationalprestige.Duringhistenure,Jones’teamswereconsistentlyrankedintheNationalJuniorCollegeAth-leticAssociation’sTop-TwentyPoll.HetookteamstotheNationalJuniorCollegeTournamentwherethe1988teamfinishedseventh.HisteamswereStateJuniorCollegeChampionsin1998andweretwo-timeRegion23Champions.

Forhisaccomplishments,JoneswasnamedRegion23JuniorCol-legeCoachoftheYearin1986an1988.OnOctober16,1996,theCopiah-Lincoln community game Jones the ultimate honor; theyinductedhimintotheir1996SportsHallofFameClass.

Jones’coachingsuccesstooknoonebysurpriseafterhisstellarbackgroundasanassistant.BeforegoingtoCo-Lin,JonesspenteightseasonsasanassistantattheUniversityofSouthernMissis-sippi.

AfterreceivingaBachelorofSciencedegreeinEducationatMissis-sippiCollegein1975,JonesservedasagraduateassistantatMCandwasresponsibleforallscoutingandrecruiting.HelaterreceivedaMasterofEducationinSchoolAdministrationin1977.

MikeisthesonofJuanitaBridgesofNewHebron,MS,andismarriedtoJaneJonesofNewHebron.Theyhavetwochildren,asonMichaelandadaughterMandy.Michaelismarriedtotheirdaughter-in-lawAmy.Mandyismarriedtotheirson-in-lawTaylorSisson.CoachJoneshasfourgrandchildren,Zach,AnsleyKate,WillandCharlotte.

Susan Musselwhite enters her ninth year as the Assistant Athletic Director and 15th as Senior Woman Adminis-trator / Compliance Officer

ADMINISTRATIVE

AstheAssistantAthleticDirectorforCompliance,SusanMussel-whiteisinvolvedinmanyfacetsofthedaytodayoperationsoftheathleticsdepartmentforboththemenandwomen.

Musselwhitealsodirectlyoverseestheplanningandorganizationofspecialathleticdepartmentevents includingbutnot limitedtofundraising,homegameadministrationandfacilityusefromout-side entities.

AstheSeniorWomanAdministrator,Musselwhite’smainresponsi-bilityrevolvesaroundthewellbeingofourathletesandthegrowthanddevelopmentofourprograms.Inthisrole,MusselwhitewasresponsibleforinitiatingthefirstStudentAthleteAdvisoryCommittee(SAAC).“EverycampusisrequiredtohaveaSAACgroupperNCAArules.Thisgroupwasestablishedtogivestudent-athletesavoiceoncampus,aswellastotheAmericanSouthwestConferenceandtheNCAA.”TheSAACisalsoawayforourathletestobeinvolvedandpromotemanycommunityserviceprojects.

ServingastheComplianceOfficer,Musselwhiteisresponsibleforcertifyingtheeligibilityforthemorethan400student-athletesoncampusaswellasservingasacampusliaisonbetweenMissis-sippiCollege,theAmericanSouthwestConferenceandtheNCAAregardingeverchangingrulesandregulations.

“IamveryfortunatetobeabletocontinuemycareeratMississippiCollegeinthisrole.IamespeciallygratefulfortheopportunitytoworkwithMikeJones,ourcoachesandourstaffandtobeapartofsuchasuccessfulprogram.”

COACHING

BeforebeingnamedAssistantAthleticDirectorintheFallof2006,Musselwhite served as theHeadSoftballCoach atMississippiCollege.Aftercompletingafouryearcareerandservingoneasagraduateassistant,MusselwhitetookoverthesoftballprograminitsDivisionIIIinceptionandguidedtheprogramto7consecutive20+winseasonsand9winningseasonsinarow.

AstheHeadSoftballcoach,Musselwhitetriedtobeanambassadorforthesportofsoftballbybeingacommunityresource.Musselwhiteconductedmanyplayerclinicsaswellascoach’sclinicstryingtoimprovetheknowledgelevelandskilllevelofplayersandcoachesaround the state of Mississippi.

AfterjoiningtheAmericanSouthwestConferencein1998,CoachMusselwhiteledtheLadyChoctawstoa205-152overallrecord.In1999,theLadyChoctawsfinished22-9,whichatthattime,rankedasoneof thebest records in school history. In 2002, theLadyChoctawsproduceda26-14recordandfinishedsecondoverallafterlosingtoEastTexasBaptistintheASCChampionshipgame.In2005MusselwhitereceivedCo-CoachoftheYearhonorsthatshesharedwithLouisianaCollegecoachTimWhitman.The2006seasonconcludedwiththeLadyChoctawsfinishingwitha24-16overallrecordandathirdplacefinishafterlosinginthesemi-finalgameoftheASCChampionshiptournament.SeveralLadyChoc-tawsreceivedpostseasonhonorsandMusselwhitewasnamedtheEastDivision“CoachoftheYear.”

Musselwhiteattributestheprogramssuccesstothegrowthofthesportoffastpitchsoftball.“WhenIstartedcoachingatMississippiCollege,fastpitchsoftballwasnewtomostofthehighschoolsinMississippiandnonexistantatthejuniorcollegelevel.Theemer-genceof fastpitchsoftball asanOlympicsportdrew immediaterecognitiontothesport.TheNCAAquicklyfollowedbyaddingthesportasachampionshipsportandithasnotstoppedgrowingsince.

PERSONAL

AnativeofSouthaven,Mississippi,MusselwhitereceivedherBach-elorofEducationdegreefromMississippiCollegeinDecemberof1994andcompletedherMastersofEducationinAugustof1996.MusselwhitewasinductedintotheMississippiCollegeSportsHallofFame inApril2006.Musselwhitealsoservesan instructor intheDepartmentofKinesiologyandhasbeenaClintonParksandRecreationAdvisoryBoardmembersince2005.

Season OutlookTheMississippiCollegebaseball teamwillbeginanew era this spring when they get back into Divi-sionIIandtheGulfSouthConference,playingtheirfirstfullGSCschedulesincethe1996season.TheChoctawshadasuccessfulruninDivisionIIIandtheAmericanSouthwestConference,advancing to theASCTournament14timesin17seasonsandquali-fying for the NCAA Tournament three times. TheywouldwintheASCchampionshipin2003andsetaschoolrecordwith39winsin2010.

HeadcoachBrianOwensentershis9thseasonatthehelmand10thintheprogram.TheformerMis-sissippiStatestandouthastallied193careervicto-riesandwilllooktoreachthe200-winmilestonethisseason.

“ThisisanexcitingtimetobepartoftheMississippiCollegeathleticdepartment,”saidOwens.“Ibelievewe are going back to where we belong. The GulfSouthConferenceisoneofthebestinthecountry,andwe have a big challenge ahead of us. I thinkit’sachallengethatthisprogramisreadytoacceptheadon.”

OVERVIEw

PITCHERSWhiletheChoctawshaveseveralnewfaces inthelineup thisseason, theywill relyheavilyon twore-turners in the starting rotation. Senior BrOOkS fOrTenBerrY and jAYMe MOnrOe combined forninewins in22starts in2014,eachpostinganERAbelow3.30.

Fortenberry will climb up the MC pitching recordbooks this season as he is poised to finish in thetop-10 inboth inningspitchedandstrikeouts inhiscareer.TheMageenativehad71strikeoutsin81.1innings last season.

Monroewent5-5witha3.28ERAandposted twoone-hitperformancesin2014.TheClintonnativeisexpectedtomissthefirstportionoftheseasonduetosurgeryfollowinglastyear,butshouldbereadytocontributequickly.

The Choctaws are also bringing back a couple ofrelief pitchers in seniors AnDY OlMSTeD and GrADY TurMAn. Olmsted missed the first partoflastyearduetoacollapsedlungsufferedinpre-seasonworkouts.TheBrandon native is expectedtoplayahuge roleoutof thebullpen thisseason.Turmanwent3-2withtwosavesin2014.TheClin-tonnativewalked just threebatters in12.2 inningspitched.

Therecruitingclassboastsseveralimpressivearmsthat will make an impact right away. JuniorkYle CuMlAnDer transferred from Mississippi Gulf Coastandhasbeennamed to theGSCTopNew-comersList.TheMobilenativewillpushfortimeinthe starting rotation.

Twoothernewcomerspushingfortimeintheweek-end rotation will be junior TAYlOr OlSen and freshman jAke frAze. Olsen is also a transferfromGulfCoastandplayedhishighschoolballatMississippipowerhouse,PascagoulaHS.Frazeisaleft-hander fromPlano,Texas thatwas impressivein fall ball and should see time on the mound in his rookieseason.

Coming out of the bullpen will be juniors TYler SCHOll and WeSleY WilkinSOn. Scholl is the all-time saves leader inNorthwestMSCC history,andWilkinsonhelpedleadHindsCCtothe2014NJ-CAAWorldSeries,wheretheEaglesfinished2ndinthe nation.

CATCHERS

Senior MArTY STrinGfellOW returns as the lonestarterontheinfieldfromlastseason.TheLu-cedalenativestarted31gamesatfirstbasein2014and led the teamwith a .362 batting average. Hetallied20RBIanddidnotmakeanerrorallseason.

Backing up Stringfellow at first base will be ju-nior TOler rOBinSOn and sophomore AuSTin WArkenTin.RobinsonwasalsoapartoftheHindsCCteamlastseasonandhispowerwillfindhimaspotinthelineup.WarkentincomestoMCfromCal-gary,Alberta,Canada,andisatranferfromWaylandBaptistUniversity.

The middle infield is loaded with talent as juniorHunTer HAll will be the opening day startingshortstop after transferring from Pensacola State College.TheHoover,Ala.native joinedCumlanderontheGSCTopNewcomersList.

TheChoctawswillbelookingforanewsignal-call-er in2015asZachEvansgraduated following the2014season.TheTaylorsvillenativewasthestartingcatcherforthreeseasons,andMCwillhavetoworkquicklytofindsomeonetofillthehole.

JuniorCAleB upTOnappearstobethefavoriteforthestartingspotafteranimpressivefallseason.TheHinds CC transfer also helped lead the Eagles to a runner-upfinishattheNJCAAWorldSeries.Uptonwasalsoaquarterbackinhighschool,wherehewasatwo-timeAll-StateselectionatCathedralHS.

Senior CAleB MOrriS and freshman GrAnT veTeTOwillalsopushforplayingtimethisspring.Morriswasthestartingsecondbasemanin2014forMC,butwithatalentedrecruitingclassintheinfield,Morrismadethemovebehindtheplate.Vetetoisarookie fromSpainParkHighSchool,where he hit.360withsixhomerunsinhiscareer.

AlsojoiningHallupthemiddlewillbejuniorsTAn-ner DenSfOrD and lOGAn ferrell. Dens-ford isatransfer fromNorthwestMSCCwhereheposted a .981 fielding percentage in two seasons.Ferrellisaversatileplayerthatwillseeactionatsec-ond, third and short this season.

The Clinton native was a two-sport star atClintonHighSchoolandplayedballatHindsCCfortwoyearsbeforegoingtoSELouisiana.Thesuper-athleticoutfielderwillgive theChoctawssomepopand speed at the top of the lineup.

TheChoctaws played their final season inDivisionIIIandtheAmericanSouthwestConfer-encein2014,finishingwitha21-19recordanda5th-placefinishintheleague.BrooksFortenberrywasaThird-TeamAll-ASCselection,whileRob-bieJernigan,SpencerWilsonandBlakeMcIlwainwereHonorableMentions. In2009,OwensledtheChoctawstoanASCEastCo-Championshipwith a30-16overallmarkanda14-4conferencerecord.The Choctaws eliminatedMary Hardin-Baylor in theASCChampionship Seriesandadvanced to the championship gameoftheASCTournament.MCfinishedthirdintheASCwitha.337battingaverageandledtheleaguewith111stolenbases.UnderOwens’ tutelage, theChoctaws had twoAll-AmericansinBrettHinsonandBoBell.HinsonandBellalsoearnedABCA-RawlingsFirst TeamAll-West Region honors withHinson being named the region’s Pitcher of theYear.TimBruss,TylerSeaman,andBellearnedAll-ASCFirstTeamhonors.SeamanwasnamedASCNewcomeroftheYearafterthrowingtwono-hittersontheyear.Overall,eightChoctawsearnedAll-Conferencehon-ors. In2008,OwensledtheChoctawstotheASCChampionshipTournamentanda24-19overallrecord,inclduinganoutstanding14-5markintheconference.TheChoctawsreachedthetournamentafterbeatingMaryHardin-Baylor in two games in theASCChampioshipseries.Owensistheprimary

pitchingcoachandwatchedtheteamERAimprovefrom6.41in2007to5.40in2008.Forhisefforts,OwenswasnamedASCEastDivisionCoachoftheYearandhadfiveplay-ersearnAll-ASChonors. In 2006,Owens served as the pitchingcoach and top assistant coach for the Choc-tawsandputtogetheroneofthetoppitchingstaffsintheASC.UnderhistutelagejuniorpitcherJonathanRussellearnedASCEastDivisionPitcheroftheYearhonors.Russellledtheconferenceinwins(10)andinningspitched (88.2).He finised the season10-3witha3.05earnedrunaverageand79strikeouts,goodenough forsecond in theleague. Theentirestaff ranked4th in theASCwithanearnedrunaverageof4.87andledtheconferencewith324strikeouts.Theyweresecondintheleaguewithanopposingbattingaverageof.271. Before joining the staff atMC,OwensspenttwoyearsatTennesseeTechwherehefilledthepositionofpitchingcoach.AtTen-nesseeTech,Owenswasresponsibleforthepitchingstaffaswellasfieldmaintenance.Healsowasinvolvedwithfund-raisingeffortsand recruiting. OwensspenthisfirstseasonofcoachingasastudentassistantonRonPolk’sstaffatMississippiStateUniversity.There heas-sistedwiththepitchingstaffandperformedgamedaydutieswiththestaff.Heoversawthe bullpen during the games. Fromthatpointforward,theGSChasbeengiantstepsaheadoftheD-II pack.Beginning in 1997, the league found neutral sites payingsizeableguaranteesformostofitsteamchampionships.NCAACon-ventions regularly featureGSC-proposedor -inspired legislation.Noonewinsmore regionalsor earnsmoreNCAApost-seasonbids. In2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification officespace. But thecrowningmomentcame in2005-06,when theGSCdebuteditshighlysuccessful“GSC-TVLive”packagewhichincludedninefootballgames(now11)anditsmen’s&women’sbasketballtour-namentfinals.Addtothatthebranded“GSCDigiNet”videoplatformandthelive-streamingofmostofitschampionships,andyoucanseewhytheGSCisaConferencepavingthewayinthe21stcentury!

increasedthemembershiptoeight. Theleagueopenedanoffice inHammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in1972andtwoyears later,NELAleft forDivisionI, followedbySELAandNichollsStatein1979.

The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when theCEOsadmittedValdostaState andWestGeorgia (1983). In 1991,Tennessee-MartinandTroyStatewentDivisionI,brieflydroppingtheGSCback to sevenmembers. Anaggressiveexpansionunder theguidanceofnewCommissionerNateSalantresultedin10newmem-bers: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama Huntsville, HendersonState,CentralArkansasandMississippiUniversityforWomen(1993-94);WestFlorida(1994-95);andArkansas-Monticello,ArkansasTech,Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville StatemovedtoDivisionIattheendof1992-93.MississippiCollegedroppedtoDivision IIIat theendof1995-96,andwas replacedbyChristianBrotherstokeeptheConferenceat16schools.InJuly2000,theGSCwelcomedHardingUniversityandOuachitaBaptistUniversity,makingit the largestNCAA-playingconferenceatany levelwith18schools.MUWdroppeditsathleticsprogramattheendofthe2002-03season,decreasingthemembershipto17.CentralArkansasreclassifiedtoDi-visionIandLincolnMemorialmovedtotheSouthAtlanticConferencefollowingthe2006-07year.Montevallo’sdepartureforthePeachBeltConferencedroppedthenumberto14.

TheGSCmovedawayfromdivisionalplayafterthe2010-11seasonafteritssixArkansasmembersbrokeaway,droppingthemembershiptoeight.Thankstoanaggressiveexpansionplan,theGSCsponsoredtheDivisionIIapplicationsofUnionUniversity(TN)andShorterUni-versity(GA),whichwereacceptedintotheNCAAprocessinJuly2011,andareexpectedtobecomeofficialmembersfor2014-15.Thenextstepinbolsteringitsmembershipcamein2012,backingtheDivisionIIapplicationofLeeUniversity(TN)whichwasacceptedbytheNCAAin Julyof 2012. The leagueadded its first-everassociatemember,FloridaTech,infootballonlyin2013.TheConferenceaddedanoldfriendbackintothefoldwhenMississippiCollege’sapplicationtorejoinDivisionIIwasapprovedinSeptemberof2013.
