For the second consecutive season, the expectations are high for the Canisius College baseball team. But this year, those expectations aren’t just in the Golden Griffin locker room. After a 41-13 season in 2008, Canisius jumped onto the national scene with a 21.5-game improvement in its won-loss record from 2007, the second-biggest single-season improvement in the NCAA since 1998. The .755 winning percentage ranked ninth in the country. Canisius was one of four teams in the country with 13 or fewer losses, and the Griffs finished 82nd in the official NCAA RPI. Numerous publications around the country have the Golden Griffins as the team to beat in the MAAC. Individual players are receiving All-American accolades, being placed on preseason watch lists and appear-ing as prospects for the Major League Baseball Draft. Unlike 2008 when the talented roster entered the season after flashing a lot of potential with its exciting run to the 2007 MAAC Tourna-ment, the 2009 Golden Griffins know they can be successful for an entire season. Now the challenge for this roster – led by its 10-man senior class – is handling those expectations and taking the next step of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. “We’re definitely a lot more confident, which has its pluses and minuses. Our team has taken a few things for granted, which isn’t a good thing. I think we’re hungrier from the disappointing finish to last season,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. “The senior attitude has been good and hungry. Four years go by fast. The time is here now. There’s no next year for them. It’s their last opportunity at a ring.”

Pitching

Not only does the Canisius College pitching staff return all but one of its major contributors from the 2008 team, there are additions mak-ing the deepest staff in the MAAC even deeper. The Golden Griffins return their top three starting pitchers in senior Alex Mackenzie, redshirt sophomore Shane Davis and junior Mike Goemans. MacKenzie raised his game midway through the 2007 season, re-cording a 1.93 ERA during his final seven starts. The righty held the No. 1 spot in the Canisius rotation as a junior, posting a 3.30 ERA and 6-3 record in 13 starts. Davis was one of the top freshman pitchers in the country in 2008, tying for first among all rookie pitchers with 12 victories and ranked in the top 10 among freshman pitchers in ERA (2.42). The Freshman All-American and Third-Team All-American is on the Wallace Award Watch List and is third among eligible Canadians for the 2009 Major League Draft. Goemans is in his third season as a starter for the Griffs and had made 25 career starts for the Blue and Gold. The 6-foot-4 lefty, along with MacKenzie, has started a MAAC Tournament game each of the past two seasons. “We expect the weekend starting rotation to stay the same. I’m not sure if the order will stay the same, but we have options, which are al-ways a good thing. Going either Alex then Shane or Shane then Alex has pluses and minuses,” McRae said. “Having a third-year starter in our three spot is very good. Mike throws strikes, competes and has a lot of experi-ence.” In the bullpen, the Griffs have a number of experienced arms in seniors Ryan McGorman, Aaron Boag and Matt Weber. McGorman served as the Canisius closer in 2008, recording a program-record seven saves as McGorman either recorded a save or was a part of the decision in 17 of his 22 appearances. Boag ranks third in program history in career ap-pearances, leading the team in appearances as a freshman and sophomore. Weber made 15 or more appearances for the third consecutive season in 2008. The main addition to the bullpen will be Shayne Willson, who

is a hard-throwing righty that will double as the team’s rightfielder. McRae plans to use McGorman and Willson late in the games with Weber, Boag, Josh Marshall and Alek Brown in setup roles. “We’ll use Willson and McGorman as a two-headed monster late in the game as they both come out of the pen throwing hard,” McRae said. “Aaron has been one of our most pleasant surprises in preseason workouts and we have a lot of other players with experience to bring into late-game situations.” Two incoming freshmen were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft in Benson Merritt (42nd round, Cincinnati Reds) and Na-than Linseman (45th round, Detroit Tigers). McRae said Merritt is making a case for a starting job and has outstanding stuff, but needs to harness it. McRae also sees Ryan Fennell as a development guy who has worked hard during the offseason to get an opportunity among a talented pitching staff.

Position Players

The Canisius offense rewrote the record books in 2008, scoring 452 runs (116 more than any previous season), and setting records in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, walks and stolen bases. Individually, the Griffs also put their names all over a number of categories. The Griffs had the top four single-season totals in runs scored, five of the top nine in hits, four of the top six in home runs and four of the top six in RBIs. The only question mark in the Canisius lineup comes at the catcher spot with the graduation of Kevin Reimer. Three candidates will get the opportunity behind the plate in junior Paul Panik, freshman Brad Medici and senior Connor Burke, who played catcher as a freshman in 2006. Panik made 43 starts in his first two seasons and has the inside track to the job. McRae splits the time with his catcher, trying to keep them fresh throughout the season. “Paul is our starter as he’s a solid, all-around catcher. Paul knows his job offensively and doesn’t try to do too much,” McRae said. “Brad and Connor are both going to see some time. Having Connor behind the plate makes the lineup deeper with his bat in the catcher spot.” Moving over to first base and designated hitter, the Griffs have three players for two spots in Burke, senior Brian Gibbs and sophomore Brian Burton. Gibbs has an on-base percentage of .430 during his two seasons with Canisius and was getting on base at close to a 50 percent clip early in the 2008 season before suffering an injury. Burton made 27 starts at first base and 12 at designated hitter as a freshman, recording eight multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games. honors. Burke has played in 143 career games and is a career .273 hitter while making just five errors in 880 chances in the field. “Brian Burton and Connor will split time at first base with Brian Gibbs working his way into the mix at DH,” McRae said. “Both of those options are very good defensively and we’ll ride the hot bat in those posi-tions.” The rest of the infield returns the three starters from 2008, including four-year starters at shortstop and third base. Kevin Mailloux had one of the best offensive seasons in program history in 2008, batting .377 with program records in runs scored (56), hits (77) and RBIs (53) while also hitting 12 home runs. Mailloux earned All-America honors in 2008 and was named to the Wallace Watch List, an award given to the top col-legiate baseball player. At shortstop, Alec Cabello has started 140 games during his first three years at Canisius. Cabello led the MAAC in 2008 in assists (184) and had a career-best fielding percentage (.954). In the No. 9 spot in the batting order, Cabello had his best season offensively with a .321 batting average, 35 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. At third base, Kevin Mahoney was named the MAAC Pre-season Player of the Year after a summer where he earned Coastal Plains Offensive Player of the Year honors while playing for the Forest City Owls. Mahoney owns a number of program records ¬— runs scored, hits, doubles, RBI and total bases. He had a career season in 2008, setting or ty-ing career highs in 10 offensive categories and along with Mailloux earned Rawlings NCAA Northeast Region First-Team honors from the ABCA. One player who will get an opportunity in the infield is Steve McQuail. The sophomore can play second, short or third and McQuail has impressed the coaching staff during the offseason. Jon VanRemmen provides McRae with another defensive option, along with Mike Deuschle who returns from an injury that sidelined him in 2008. “We return our starting infield and have the two best hitters in the league in Mahoney and Mailloux. They are also both very good defen-sively, which often gets overlooked because of their offensive numbers,” McRae said. “Steve McQuail has come on strong and is making a case for playing time. We’re going to get him in there because he deserves it and we need him to be ready – both this year and next year.” In the outfield, two starters return in Ian Choy and Branson Joseph while Shayne Willson has taken over the right field spot that was vacated by Adam Donato. Choy, the 2007 MAAC Rookie of the Year, saw his numbers go down from his freshman campaign (.358 batting average) with a still-respectable .290 batting average in 2008. Joseph, a four-year starter in centerfield, had his best season as a Griff, which was also his most healthy season. Joseph raised his batting average more than 30 points to .312 and had 11 home runs and 43 RBIs, shattering his previous career highs of four and 30. Willson provides Canisius with a versatile option as a power arm out of the bullpen. Willson spent his first two seasons at Iowa Western Community College where he hit .404 with a .822 slugging percentage and played in the National Junior College Athletic Assocation World Series twice. Out of high school, Willson was a 16th round selection of the Min-nesota Twins in the 2006 MLB Draft. Perry Silverman gives McRae another option as an athletic out-fielder and right-handed bat who can platoon in left. Silverman has played in 78 games during his first two seasons with Canisius and is also an option in right field when Willson is on the mound. One other player who will see playing time is Will Chomicki, who “can fly” around the bases according to McRae and is the team’s top pinch-running option. “We’re expecting a bounce-back season from Ian because we know what he’s capable of,” McRae said. “It was good to see Branson healthy last year and I know he can improve even more as a senior. Shayne has had no problems with the transition and will be productive from the start of the season. Perry gives us quality depth in the outfield, being able

to play all three positions.”

Schedule and Outlook

Canisius starts the 2009 schedule with its first 24 games away from home, starting with this weekend’s four-game series at Gardner-Webb. Some of the highlights of the non-conference schedule include a three-game series at Atlantic 10 power Charlotte at the end of Febru-ary, single games in March against West Virginia and Virginia, and mid-week games in April against Le Moyne and Kent State, who is rated in the preseason top 25 by Baseball America. The Griffs have their home opener scheduled for March 25, against Buffalo before starting the conference schedule against Marist that weekend. Canisius plays Rider the next weekend as the Broncs won the conference tournament last season and were picked to finish second in the preseason poll. The Griffs will host the Big Four at the Demske Sports Complex for the first time, with the semifinals taking place on April 28, and the finals the following day. Canisius closes the season with six consecutive home games, including the final three games of the regular season against Niagara. “Our schedule is certainly tougher than last year as we face what I feel are top 30 teams in Virginia, Kent State, Charlotte,” McRae said. “We should be challenged every weekend in the non-conference schedule to get us ready for MAAC play. We also have some mid-week games that are challenging.” Baseball teams have some of the most difficult travel schedules in the country, forcing the student-athletes to balance the workload in the classroom. The Griffs were successful in the first semester, with 22 of the team’s players posting a grade point average of 3.0 or better. “We ask a lot of our players, but I’m proud of the way they have held up their end of the deal in the classroom,” McRae said. The Griffs have another opportunity to make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Last season proved it takes a dedi-cated approach throughout the entire season to find success every weekend. “Hopefully we learned, if we don’t stick to our approach and our process, then talent alone isn’t good enough,” McRae said. “We try to get at least a little better every day. In the long season, it’s a challenge not to lose sight of our goals. “We just need to stick to the process to work toward the ultimate goal of winning the conference tournament.”

in 2008 and claimed their first-ever postseason victory in the MAAC Tour-nament. In his career, McRae has a 153-208 career record and is 88-122 in his four seasons at Canisius. Canisius was one of 31 teams in NCAA Division I with 40-plus victories. The team’s .755 winning percentage ranked ninth in the country as the Golden Grif-fins were one of four teams in the country with 13 or fewer losses. Canisius finished 82nd in the official NCAA RPI. The Griffs set 10 team and nine individual records during the season. Canisius posted a 25-6 road record, which ranked fourth in the country. Canisius, along with Miami, Kentucky, Oklahoma State and North Caro-

lina, was one of five programs at the Division I level to finish in the top 50 in scoring, earned run aver-age and fielding percentage. On the indi-vidual level, Ca-nisius had its first two All-Americans in program history as Shane Davis received a total of eight All-America and Freshman All-America honors while Kevin Mail-loux was named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Five Golden Griffins earned first-team All-MAAC honors while two more players

were named to the second team. Davis became the first player in league history to earn Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. Davis also gave Canisius

the MAAC Rookie of the Year for the second consecutive season as Ian Choy won the award in 2007. Choy was the first player in program history to win the award. Two incoming freshmen were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft – Benson Merritt (Cincinnati Reds, 42nd round) and Nathan Linseman (Detroit Tigers, 45th round). McRae earned 2008 MAAC Coach of the Year honors and became the first coach in league history to win the award at two schools as McRae also won the award in 2003 at Niagara. He led the Golden Griffins to a breakout season in 2007 as Canisius made its first MAAC playoff appearance since 1994. Under McRae’s guidance, Canisius’ team batting average and ERA has improved each season. The Griffs made three-straight appearances in the Big 4 Baseball Classic championship game from 2005 to 2007 and won the tourna-ment in 2006 and 2007. The 2003 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year came to Canisius from Niagara University, where he led the Purple Eagles to back-to-back MAAC playoff appearances. He compiled a 65-86 overall record (.430 winning percentage) and a 41-36 (.532) MAAC mark with the Purple Eagles. McRae set a school record for wins with 26 in 2003 and topped the mark with 27 in 2004. His 2004 squad finished second in the league, while his 2003 team was third. He coached Josh McCurdy, the 2003 MAAC Player of the Year, and recruited James Avery, the 2003 MAAC Rookie of the Year. Both players went on to be selected in the MLB Draft. McRae began his career by becoming the first head coach at Brock University. From there, the Niagara Falls, Ontario, native joined Niagara’s staff as a hitting instructor in 1996-97 before moving to Winthrop Univer-sity in Rock Hill, S.C., from 1997-98. From 1998-2001, McRae served as an assistant coach at Maine, where he was responsible for the 12-man pitching staff. He also served as an assistant coach for the Canadian National Youth Team, which competed in the World Championships in 1996 and 1997 and as a guest coach for the Toronto Blue Jays during their 1997 spring training. McRae was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College and captained the 1991 team. He also lettered as a goalie on the Colby College hockey team. McRae earned his undergraduate degree from Colby in 1991 and his master’s degree in education from Niagara in 1993. McRae and his wife, Michelle, reside in Niagara Falls, with their chil-dren, Madison and Mason.

Mike MediciAssistant Coach2nd Season Medici is in his second season with the Blue and Gold as an assistant on coach

Mike McRae’s staff. Medici spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at St. Rose. Medici played four seasons at Niagara as a catcher/designated hitter. He was a First-Team All-MAAC selection in 2005 and a Second-Team All-MAAC selection in 2006 and 2004. Medici also earned All-Tournament Team honors twice. A captain as a senior, Medici was two-time preseason All-MAAC selection by Baseball America. Medici graduated in 2006 from Niagara with a degree in sport manage-ment.

Jerry ShankAssistant Coach2nd Season Shank is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Golden Griffins.

Previously, Shank spent two seasons at Ohio Valley University where he coached the pitching staff and last season served as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. The Scots appeared in the conference tournament in both of Shank’s seasons at Ohio Valley, winning the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2006. Before his time at Ohio Valley, Shank was the top assistant at Eastern Mennonite University where he worked with the pitching staff. Shank played four seasons at the collegiate level, started at Hampden-Syd-ney College where the Tigers advanced to the conference tournament in 2003. Shank then transferred to Eastern Men-nonite for his final two seasons, where he graduated in 2005 with a degree in history.

Matt MazurekVolunteerAssistant Coach3rd Season Mazurek is in his third season with the Golden

Griffins as a volunteer assistant coach. Mazurek played for coach Mike Mcrae during his first two seasons in leading the Blue and Gold. The 2006 Canisius College Male Athlete of the Year hit a team-leading .358 as a senior with 44 RBIs, 18 steals a school-record 68 hits. As a junior, Mazurek led Canisius with a .351 batting average with seven home runs, 41 RBIs and 54 hits. Mazurek graduated from Cani-sius in 2006.

Canisius College Academic Services provides academic, personal and career support programs that foster the total development for the student-athletes. A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences. Service programs preparing students for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle are also provided. Academic Services for Student-Athletes offers the guidance and direction needed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

Academic Advisor for Athletics ServicesThe Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius:

• Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility.

• Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study.

• Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress.

• Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans.• Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course

instructors.• Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial ProgramIn order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.

Study hall is to be used for course work only. A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Canisius College has been a participating institution in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program since 2000-01.

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to:• Support efforts of every student-athlete toward intellectual devel-

opment and graduation• Use athletics as preparation for success in life• Meet the changing needs of student-athletes• Enhance interpersonal relationships in the lives of student-athletes• Assist student-athletes in building positive self-esteem• Enable student-athletes to make meaningful contributions to their

communities• Promote ownership by the student-athletes of their academic, ath-

letic, personal and social responsibilities• Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and

their communities for the purpose of education• Encourage the development of leadership skills

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on five commitment areas:• Academic Excellence• Athletic Excellence• Personal Development• Career Development• Service

• The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) serves as the stu-dent-athletes’ line of communication to the athletics administration. Two student-athletes from each team serve on the SAAC and meet with department of athletics administrators once a month.

• Once each semester, Canisius recognizes its student-athletes who have achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or higher at an academic awards banquet.

• At the end of the academic year, the athletic department hosts the All-Sports Banquet and announces the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The banquet also includes a video, featuring all athletic teams, along with other award presentations.

• Canisius initiated a program in 2002, called Athletes For Athletes, to increase fellowship among the student-athletes and student atten-dance at home games. SAAC representatives from each team pick one home game on their schedule they would like all other student-ath-letes to attend.

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

MAAC HistoryWith 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 28th year of competition during the 2008-2009 academic year. The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with mem-bers competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola College (Md.), Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara Univer-sity, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members Mount St. Mary’s University, Providence College, Saint Joseph’s Univer-sity, Virginia Military Institute and Wagner College compete in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Academics and AthleticsThe MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the na-tion’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and Sovereign Bank Arena. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the fabled Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, where the cross country championships are contested, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the baseball championship. This year, the MAAC will take its Cross Country Championships to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. In 2009, the MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship will be at Walt Disney World. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will move to Celebration Golf Club, located in Celebration, Florida, beginning in 2009.

In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 72 NIT appearances and 41 NCAA appearances. In addition, Rider University represented the league last season in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational (CBI). Combined with recent bracket expansion in several sports, the MAAC possesses 12 automatic bids in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s water polo and men’s lacrosse. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the Iona College men’s cross country team finished second at the 2007 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league retained XOS Technolo-gies, Inc., to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, fan polls and an online merchandise store.

The Rev. James M. Demske, S.J. Sports Complex, built in 1989 at a cost of $4.5 million, provides a home field for Canisius College athletics. It has been hailed by the New York Times, USA Today, and The NCAA News as a model for urban campuses.

HistoryThe facility is unique for its space utilization in a compact urban setting and has set the standard for design for other schools with limited land. Built on a 14-acre parcel of land located behind the Koessler Athletic Center, the multi-use, all-purpose, all-weather A-Turf surface serves as home to the Golden Griffin soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball teams. The field, which is fully lighted for evening activities, features grandstand seating for 1,000 and portable bleachers for 150. In addition to the field, a locker room for Canisius student-athletes and visiting opponents sits adjacent to the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Demske Sports Complex underwent a major face lift during the summer of 2008 when Canisius replaced the old AstroTurf 12 playing surface with 123,000 square feet of A-Turf. A-Turf is a multi-purpose, all-weather synthetic playing surface that is virtually unaffected by adverse weather conditions. Using natural grass as its model, A-Turf’s synthetic turf consists of a denser construction of polyethylene fibers and a high-level of specialized rubber and sand mix to increase playability and lower the G-Max rating. The lower the G-Max rating, the greater the shock absorption and less impact to the athlete. In addition to the work on the playing fields, Canisius also installed brand new scoreboards and new baseball dugouts along the first and third base sides.

The Demske Sports Complex hosted the 2004 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse League championships and will serve as the host venue for the event again in May 2009.

Center for Athletic TrainingCanisius College opened the Center for Athletic Training in the summer of 2007. The state-of-the art facility, located in the Koessler Athletic Center, is used for game and practice preparation and is fully equipped for acute and long-term injury rehabilitation. The Center houses private offices for both team of the College’s team physicians and full-time Certified Athletic Trainers who serve Canisius’ student-athletes. An adjacent Hydrotherapy area compliments the Center in providing the highest quality care for those donning the Blue and Gold.

Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J.President

President of Canisius College since 1993, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. has transformed Canisius College from a commuter college serving primarily the Western New York market into a residential comprehensive university drawing students from across the Northeast and beyond.

Under Father Cooke’s leadership, Canisius has invested nearly $120 million in 24 major capital projects on the Main Street campus, including a complete renovation of the college’s signature classroom building, Old Main, Lyons Hall, and the development of the Montante Cultural Center. Canisius has completed eight residence hall construction or renovation projects, including two townhouse complexes and a high-rise residence hall. Plans to develop Science Hall, an interdisciplinary science center at the college are underway.

Educating students for the demands of an ever-changing world is a high priority for Father Cooke. New majors in emerging fields such as bioinformatics, international business, accounting information systems, health and human performance and digital media arts have recently been added to Canisius’ comprehensive curriculum. Canisius faculty, students and staff are heavily involved in wide variety of service learning and volunteer activi-ties throughout Western New York and beyond.

Father Cooke received high marks in a Buffalo News poll of Western New York leaders which ranked Father Cooke as the second most influential civic leader and the college as the second most influential institution overall in terms of their positive impact on the community. Father Cooke was also rec-ognized by The Buffalo News as one of its Outstanding Citizens for 2001 and named the 2003 Renaissance Man by the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF). He received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the Niagara Lutheran Foundation, and the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) of Western New York presented Father Cooke with a 2007 Citation Award for his community leadership.

In early 2008, Father Cooke served as a delegate at the Jesuits’ General Congregation 35 that elected Father Adolfo Nicolas as the new General of the Society of Jesus. He was also a delegate at General Congregation 33 in 1983 that elected Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach as General.

Prior to joining the Canisius community, Father Cooke served as executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University. Born in New York and raised in Hoboken, NJ, Father Cooke received a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham University in 1960; a Licentiate in philosophy from Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, in 1961; master’s degrees in teaching and philosophy in 1962 and 1965; respectively, from Fordham; advanced theology degrees from Woodstock College in 1967 and Yale University in 1968; and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1971. Fa-ther Cooke’s academic area of expertise focuses on ethics, the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of language.

Father Cooke is currently a member of the board of trustees of Fordham University, and a member of the finance committee of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

Dr. Ellen ConleyVice President for Student Affairs

Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her new role includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college.

Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981).

During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facili-tated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program.

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration.

From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports.

From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Gradu-ate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill MaherDirector of Athletics

Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his fourth year back in the Blue and Gold.

Since taking over at Canisius, 10 athletic teams won conference or regional championships, with the softball team advancing to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons, qualifying for the NCAA Tourna-ment 10 times in the last 14 seasons. The 2008 men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and won a share of the regular-season MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2008 baseball program earned a share of the regular-season title for the first time in 14 years and advanced to the MAAC Tournament for the second consecutive season while setting a school record with 41 victories. The 2006 volleyball team set a program record for victories. The synchronized swimming program won its 11th consecutive ECAC Championship in 2008. During the past three seasons, 63 student-athletes have earned all-league honors, 16 have won conference player or rookie of the year awards and 29 were voted to all-tournament teams.

On the academic level during the past three athletic seasons, 217 student-athletes were named to the MAAC All-Academic Honor Roll, while 39 hockey players made the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team and 15

synchronized swimmers were honored as U.S. Synchro Academic All-Americans. During the past three years, Canisius has had seven student-athletes recognized on the district level as ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA All-Academic.

Starting with the 2007-08 academic year, Maher began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Management Council.

A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05.

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Ma-her helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improve-ments to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events.

He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball pro-gram, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season.

Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994.

He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffa-lo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services.

Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.

Traci MurphySenior Women’s Administrator/Associate Athletic Director

Traci Murphy is in her fourth season as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator for the Golden Griffins. Murphy joins the Canisius staff after spending seven seasons at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 16 Divi-sion I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete welfare. She supervises compliance, academic counseling, strength and conditioning and athletic training. She also oversees the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s cross country, softball and golf. She serves on MAAC committees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gen-der and Minority Issues, and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee. She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program. The program, in collaboration with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Bills and Girl Scout Council, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involvement in sports.

Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998. She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001 which involved the monitor-ing of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC.

In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, compliance and student-athlete services. Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department. Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical ed-ucation. In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas.

The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, have two children, Sean (7) and Sarah (3).

John MaddockAssociate Athletic Director - External Affairs

John Maddock is in his 28th year with Canisius College athletics and his 12th as associate athletic director for external affairs. Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports information director, the native of Washington, Ill., was named an assistant athletic director prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into his current position in 1997. Maddock is responsible for corporate partnerships, marketing and promotions, licensing, the Blue & Gold Club and ticket sales.

The 52-year-old Maddock oversaw the operation of the department of ath-letics during Spring 2005 before Bill Maher was named the director of athletics. Maddock also assisted the MAAC with plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2005-06 athletic season.

He chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998. He serves on the Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo. He was also instrumental in planning the season-long 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04.

Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State College. Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va.

A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and the former chair of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Committee on Committees. He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee.

Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North Atlantic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton. He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World University Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena.

Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information.
