“There are no little things, just important things .”

For a team that has gotten as close to a conference championship as the Canisius baseball team, including last season’s gut-wrenching defeat in the championship series, that quote has been the area of focus for the Golden Griffins entering the 2013 season .

“I haven’t really talked to our team directly about the end of last season,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said, “but the areas we have emphasized since returning in the fall are really about being able to execute when we need to execute .

“Whether it is being in the correct defense as a fielder, rounding third base as hard as you can or executing a safety squeeze when the team needs a run, those are the things that make the dif-ference in being a champion .”

Canisius returns nine position players who made at least 30 starts last year as well as four additional position players with at least 20 starts from 2012 . The Golden Griffins also return their top four starting pitchers (including the 2012 MAAC Rookie of the Year), the 2012 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year and three other relievers with at least 10 appearances last season . Add in a couple of arms as well as some fresh-men trying to crack a deep batting or-der, and the depth of the 2013 Canisius baseball team has its ninth-year head coach encouraged .

“I like our depth on the mound . I like our depth all around the field as well,” McRae said . “We have a lot of speed in the outfield and on the base paths that gives us a lot of options defensively and in the batting order .

POSITION PLAYER PREVIEWLooking around the diamond and it’s easy to see the depth for the Golden Griffins and McRae . The ninth-year coach has a number of options at every position on the field .

The Griffs return their top two starters at catcher in senior Brooklyn Foster and sophomore Mike Booth . Both backstops are in their second year in Buffalo with Foster transferring to Canisius after two years at Cochise Com-munity College .

Foster started and ended his 2012 season strong, hitting a homer in his first career at-bat in the Blue and Gold and then earning All-Tournament Team honors at the MAAC Championship after going 6-for-14 in four postsea-son starts . Foster made a team-high 39 starts at catcher and threw out 25 percent of base runners . Booth made 21 starts as a freshman as the No . 2 catcher . In his last eight starts, Booth hit .455 with six runs scored and five RBI .

“I expect to see the two-headed monster similar to last year with Foster and Booth,” McRae said . “Mike has shown considerable improvement and is much more comfortable all around .”

“Brooklyn is comfortable as well in his second year . They will probably split the doubleheaders but I have no clear path on a rotation . I want to make sure they are fresh late in the season .”

The only graduated position player for the Griffs comes in All-MAAC Second-Team selection Drew Pet-tit . The three-year starter at third base steadily improved defensively at a tough position, posting a .952 fielding percentage last season to go along with a .298 batting average and a team-best 39 RBIs .

Junior Jimmy Luppens will start at first base after a breakout sopho-more season . Luppens led the team with a .346 batting average, 13 doubles and a .503 slugging percent-age . The Wading River, N .Y . native had 15 multi-hit games in his last 38 starts .

“Jimmy is the incumbent starter at first base and will see the majority of the time,” McRae said . “He plays hard and competes at the plate . I think he is starting to mature as a hitter and he is a very competent defender .”

McRae plans on using a trio of players up the middle in juniors Jose Torralba and Ronnie Bernick to go along with senior Manny Hernandez . Torralba will be either at second base or shortstop, with Bernick starting at shortstop against right-handed pitchers and Hernan-dez starting at second base against southpaws and Torralba shifting to shortstop .

Torralba made a team-high 57 starts in 2012, hitting .277 with a team-high 17 multi-hit games . He finished third in the MAAC with 42 runs scored and had one error in the final 29 games of the season . No one had a bigger hit than Torralba’s walk-off single in the win over Fairfield in the MAAC Championship .

Bernick made a team-high 38 starts at shortstop, finishing strong by earning All-Tournament Team honors at the MAAC Championship . The Pittsburgh, Pa . native was hit by a pitch 17 times, the second-highest single-season total in program history, en route to posting a .423 on-base percentage . Hernandez made 25 starts in his first season as a Golden Grif-fin, hitting .325 with 14 RBI .

“Jose will be the mainstay, flipping back and forth between the positions . We tried him at shortstop in the fall, and I have felt for awhile that he is one of the better defenders in the league,” McRae said . “Manny is more com-

fortable defensively and is more natural at second base . I also want to get some time for freshman Anthony Massicci, depending on how long it takes for him to make the adjustment to college baseball .”

At the end of the 2012 season, it was extremely difficult to keep the hot bat of Connor Panas out of the lineup . In his last 17 starts, Panas hit .420 as the Etobicoke, Ontario native made 19 starts at first base, eight starts at third base and four at DH . Panas will get the first crack at taking over the third base position with fellow sophomore Jesse Puscheck and possibly Bernick also seeing time .

“I expect Connor and Jesse to continue to grow,” McRae said . “Connor was one of our top hitters at the end of last season, and I expect bigger and better things from him .”

The depth is even more apparent in the outfield with seven or eight options available to McRae . Sophomore Mike Krische took over the center field spot down the stretch and will open there . Krische hit .340 with 15 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 14 games in the month of May . In Krische’s 15 starts in the leadoff spot, the Griffs went 11-4 .

Junior Ryan Coppinger saw a lot of suc-cess at the plate in the later half of the 2012 season as the Dover, N .H . native hit .407 with 16 runs scored and 14 RBI in his last 20 appearances of the season . Coppinger is the most flexible of the outfielders, being able to man any of the three spots .

“Mike has a much better understanding of what it takes to be successful, and I hope he can build on the end of his freshman season,” McRae said . “Ryan came on strong at the end of 2012 . His ability to play all three outfield positions makes it easy to keep him in the lineup .”

Two other returners for the Griffs are senior Chris Gruarin and junior Shane Zimmer . Gruarin made 51 starts last season and had nine outfield assists . The Niagara Falls, N .Y . native had a strong start to 2012, hit-ting .330 through the first six weeks of the season .

“We hope to see the return of Chris Gruarin that we had at the begin-ning of the 2012 season,” McRae said . “He could be someone who can really produce some power for us if he starts swinging the bat well .”

Zimmer showed a very patient eye at the plate, leading the team with a .473 on-base percentage and ranking 38th nationally in the category . He shattered the program record with 54 walks, breaking the previous record of 39 set by Kevin Mahoney in 2009 .

“Shane is more included to be a designated hitter . We have a lot of good

defenders where he doesn’t need to be in the outfield,” McRae said . “His patience at the plate is a real asset in getting us runners on base .”

In left, the first two options will be junior Jesse Kelso or freshman Brett Siddall . Kelso made 42 starts in left field last year and hit .340 in conference play, settling into the No . 2 spot in the order . Siddall comes

to Canisius with a lot of experience, having played for Team Canada in the 18U World Championship in Seoul Korea and also earning All-Tournament Team honors at the Americas World Junior Tournament . Siddall also could see time at first base and DH as McRae tries to get his bat in the lineup .

“Brett has earned some op-portunities to be in the lineup and he will either be in left field or as designated hitter,” McRae said . “We will have to work to find some combina-tion of Brett, Jesse Kelso, Shane and Jesse Puscheck to give our lineup balance .”

Two other options for the Griffs in the outfield are senior Christian Segar and freshman Auston Ingram. Segar will get some opportunities against left-handed pitching, and if he is able to get on base, will be another disruptive force on the base paths .

PITCHER PREVIEWTo know McRae and listen to him talk about his pitching staff in such a positive fashion, one knows that he must be pretty satisfied with the talented depth the Griffs have

shown entering the 2013 season .

“We are very experienced, very deep and returning a lot of innings from last season,” McRae said, “especially a lot of competitive innings .”

Canisius brings back more than 85 percent of its innings pitched last sea-son, including 59 of the 60 starts . The Griffs return their top four start-ing pitchers who will battle it out through the non-conference schedule for the three rotation spots in conference play .

Junior Garrett Cortright took over the No . 1 spot in the rotation at the start of conference play last season . The All-MAAC Second-Team and two-time All-Tournament Team selection went 6-6 with a 3 .50 ERA in 16 appearances . The Hamburg, N .Y . native had 76 strikeouts in 97 .2 innings . He went at least six innings in 10 of his last 11 starts and allowed three or fewer earned runs in 11 of his 14 starts .

Sophomore Devon Stewart pitched in the No . 2 spot en route to win-ning MAAC Rookie of the Year honors and earning Freshman All-Amer-ican accolades . Stewart had some impressive performances - striking out nine batters at Penn State, throwing a seven-inning shutout of Iona where he allowed one batter to reach third base, and going eight innings to earn a victory in the winners bracket game at the MAAC Champion-ship .

Fifth-year senior Billy Martin made 15 starts last season, including a team-best five starts of eight innings or more . Martin went head-to-head with All-American Marcus Stroman at Duke, going eight innings and receiving a no-decision . The Mississauga, Ontario native also went 7 .1 innings in the championship round of the MAAC Tournament, allow-ing just one run . Martin has thrown 230 innings in his career, bringing a wealth of experience and competitiveness to the staff .

The last starting pitcher is someone who was a little overlooked last season in sophomore Rohn Pierce . The Newfane, N .Y . native made 20 appearances, becoming the team’s top mid-week starter as well as an option out of the bullpen down the stretch . Pierce had a 2 .84 ERA in 10 relief appearances, striking out 16 in 19 innings . He also started the final game of the MAAC Championship, allowing two runs in six innings .

The four pitchers last year combined to throw 356 .2 innings in 2012, posting an impressive 2 .70 walks per nine innings .

“We have the same four starters as last season and will let it play out . Performance will dictate the weekend rotation,” McRae said . “I think we have the best and deepest rotation in the league, one through four . I have confidence in each and every one of them .”

What could make the Canisius pitching staff very formidable is its ability to shorten games with the quality of arms out of the pen . That starts with 2012 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year Jon Fitzsimmons . As a sophomore, Fitzsimmons set the program record with 11 saves . He had a 1 .54 earned run average in a program-record 25 appearances . The Lon-don, Ontario native averaged 12 .1 strikeouts per nine innings, allowing the opposition to hit .182 on the season .

Looking to take over the left-handed setup role of Nathan Linseman will be Eric Stolzenburg . The East Amherst, N .Y . native will see his role expanded this season from more of the one or two-batter specialist he was last year . Stolzenburg retired the first batter he faced in 13 of his final 15 appearances, including getting out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the MAAC Championship against Manhattan . The 6-foot-4 lefty stranded 19 of 21 inherited baserunners as the opposition went 3-for-25 with runners on base .

The versatility in the pen will become apparent with the quartet of junior Mike Tolsma, sophomore Aaron Casper, redshirt freshman Iannick Remillard and freshman Alex Godzak . Any one of those four pitchers could see a spot start for the Griffs or provide multiple innings out of the pen .

Tolsma comes to Canisius from Erie Community College where he got the win to send his team to the 2011 NJCAA World Series . Casper was a late addition for the team last season after rehabbing an offseason injury as he posted a 2 .45 ERA in six appearances out of the pen . Remillard redshirted the 2012 season but has shown a bulldog mentality . Godzak has impressed the coaches with his ability to adapt quickly, especially for a freshman .

Two other arms that could also see time on the mound late in a game are

junior Tyler Soucie and senior Jason Rubenstein . McRae sees Soucie, a transfer from Wilfried Laurie, as a late-inning option if Fitzsimmons gets used a lot . Rubenstein also had some impressive outings - going 3 .1 scoreless innings at Duke and getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh inning in the MAAC Championship against Manhattan . Rubenstein posted a 1 .29 ERA in the sixth inning or later last year .

“I really like our staff . We have lots of options and lots of talent,” McRae said . “We will be tested right off the bat on the opening weekend with the five nine-inning games in four days .”

SCHEDULE AND OUTLOOK

The depth of the Golden Griffins will be tested right away, with five games in four days on the opening weekend of the season . Canisius opens for the fourth consecutive season at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N .C . That event has expanded to eight teams from the original three-team weekend in 2010 against Wright State and Illinois-Chicago .

Non-conference series against UNC Asheville, Murray State, Longwood and Ohio are on the schedule before the Griffs open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against Saint Peter’s University at the Demske Sports Complex on March 23-24 . The Griffs will play their next three conference series on the road, including an April 20-21 set at defending league champion Manhattan, before playing three of its last four confer-ence series at home .

Mid-week games feature traditional opponents Buffalo and St . Bonaven-ture, along with regional opponents Akron, Binghamton and Cornell .

“Heading into the season, I feel our schedule is consistent with where it has been in previous years,” McRae said . “I really enjoy the neutral-site series against Northern teams to start the year and the rest of those non-conference series should get us ready for the conference schedule .”

Canisius was picked second in the MAAC preseason coaches poll with 72 points, two points behind two-time defending league champion Manhat-tan . The Griffs were the projected favorite by a number of publications, including Baseball America, Perfect Game and College Baseball Insider .

For a program with 175 wins over the past five seasons, Canisius has shown it can consistently have successful seasons . That win total ranks fourth in the Northeast and 47th nationally . Canisius is one of two schools in the Northeast and one of 44 schools nationally with 33 or more wins in four of the last five seasons .

The one piece missing from this program getting even more attention on the national stage is winning that last game at the end of May . It’s something that has been the goal for McRae since taking over a program ranked second-last in the country in RPI in 2004 . It’s something that has pushed the Golden Griffins to be a consistent MAAC contender with six consecutive conference tournament appearances .

It’s something that has driven the entire program each and every day since the heartbreaking end to the 2012 season at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, N .Y .

“Our goal is the same this year as it is every year,” McRae said . “We want to qualify for the conference tournament and give ourselves the chance to win the first MAAC Championship in program history .

“Then we have to find a way to win the last game .”

Mike McRae is in his ninth season as head coach of the Canisius College baseball program. McRae has led a total rebuilding project of the Golden Griffins, taking over a team that won four games in 2004 to being a perennial contender for the Metro

Atlantic Athletic Conference championship. McRae has a record of 222-224 in his eight seasons at Canisius, including a 175-115 (.603) record in the last five seasons that includes two MAAC regular-season titles.

McRae, a three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, has led Canisius to the postseason in each of the last six seasons. The Golden Griffins won the program’s first postseason game in 2008, played in the title game of the 2009 MAAC Tournament and have advanced to the championship round of the MAAC Tournament in three of the last four seasons – the only three appearances in the championship round in program history.

During the past five seasons, the Golden Griffins have won 175 games, putting Canisius No. 4 in wins in the Northeast region. Accolades for the Griffs during that time include:

Canisius has had eight players associated with the program selected in the Major League Baseball Draft during the past five years.

Canisius has had three players named All-Americans during the last five seasons – the only three All-Americans in program history. Steve McQuail was named an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2010. Shane Davis and Kevin Mailloux were the first Golden Griffins to be named All-Americans, earning the recognition during the 2008 campaign. Davis received a total of eight All-America and Freshman All-America honors while Mailloux was named an All-American by the ABCA. Canisius has also had three freshman All-Americans — Devon Stewart in 2012, Davis in 2008 and Ian Choy in 2007.

During the past six seasons, Canisius has won the MAAC Player of the

Year (twice), MAAC Coach of the Year (twice), MAAC Rookie of the Year (three times), MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year and MAAC Pitcher of the Year. Canisius has had 14 first-team all-MAAC selections and 12 second-team selections in the past five years. In 2008, Davis became the first player in league history to earn Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. Davis also gave Canisius the MAAC Rookie of the Year for the second consecutive season as Ian Choy won the award in 2007. Choy was the first player in program history to win the award.

The Golden Griffins have had four Capital One Academic All-Americans during the past three seasons. Drew Pettit earned First-Team honors in 2012 and 2011 (becoming the first MAAC male student-athlete in the

last 20 years to be named a First-Team Academic All-American twice) while Sean Jamieson earned Second-Team honors in 2011 . In 2010, Choy was the first MAAC baseball player to be honored since 2004 and first Canisius player to earn the accolade since 1997 . Also, Jamieson was named the MAAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 academic year, the first Canisius male athlete (in any sport) to win the award .

In 2010, the Griffs won their second MAAC regular-season title in three years, jumping out to a 16-2 start in conference play en route to a 19-5 MAAC record . In 2009, Canisius posted a 36-22 record, qualifying for the MAAC Tournament for third consecutive season . After dropping its first game in the postseason, the Griffs battled back and won three consecutive elimination games to force a decisive championship game .

Canisius jumped onto the national scene in 2008 with a 21 .5-game improvement in its won-loss record from 2007 (20-35), the biggest

improvement in the country and second-biggest in the NCAA since 1998 . Canisius was one of 31 teams in NCAA Division I with 40-plus victories . The team’s .755 winning percentage ranked ninth in the country as the Golden Griffins were one of four teams in the country with 13 or fewer losses . Canisius finished 82nd in the official NCAA RPI .

In 2008, Canisius posted a 25-6 road record, which ranked fourth in the country . Canisius, along with Miami, Kentucky, Oklahoma State and North Carolina, was one of five programs at the Division I level to finish in the top 50 in scoring, earned run average and fielding percentage .

McRae, who has a 286-309 career record in 11 years, is the only coach in league history to be named MAAC Coach of the Year at two different schools, winning the award at Canisius (2010 and 2008) and Niagara (2003) . He led the Golden Griffins to a breakout season in 2007 as Canisius made its first MAAC playoff appearance since 1994 .

The Griffs made three-straight appearances in the Big 4 Baseball Classic championship game from 2005 to 2007 and won the tournament in 2006,

2007 and 2009 as McRae had a career record of 10-2 in six years (four titles) of the Big 4 Baseball Classic .

The 2003 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year came to Canisius from Niagara University, where he led the Purple Eagles to back-to-back MAAC playoff appearances . He compiled a 65-86 overall record ( .430 winning percentage) and a 41-36 ( .532) MAAC mark with the Purple Eagles .

McRae set a school record for wins with 26 in 2003 and topped the mark with 27 in 2004 . His 2004 squad finished second in the league, while his 2003 team was third . He coached Josh McCurdy, the 2003 MAAC Player of the Year, and recruited James Avery, the 2003 MAAC Rookie of the Year . Both players went on to be selected in the MLB Draft .

McRae began his career by becoming the first head coach at Brock University . From there, the Niagara Falls, Ontario, native joined Niagara’s staff as a hitting instructor in 1996-97 before moving to Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S .C ., from 1997-98 . From 1998-2001, McRae served as an assistant coach at Maine, where he was responsible for the 12-man pitching staff .

He also served as an assistant coach for the Canadian National Youth Team, which competed in the World Championships in 1996 and 1997 and as a guest coach for the Toronto Blue Jays during their 1997 spring training .

McRae was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College and captained the 1991 team . He also lettered as a goalie on the Colby College hockey team . McRae earned his undergraduate degree from Colby in 1991 and his master’s degree in education from Niagara in 1993 .

McRae and his wife, Michelle, reside in Niagara Falls, with their children, Madison and Mason .

Assistant CoachSeventh Season

Matt Mazurek

Mazurek is in his seventh season with the Golden Griffins coaching staff and his fourth year as an assistant coach after spending three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach . He is the longest tenured assistant coach in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference .

Mazurek has served as the program’s hitting instructor during the past four years, which included the selection of Sean Jamieson and Steve McQuail in the Major League Baseball Draft . Jamie-son, the 2011 MAAC Male Athlete of the Year who hit .350 with 13 home runs and 51 RBI as a shortstop, was selected in the 17th round of the 2011 MLB Draft, the highest selection by a Golden Griffin since 1994 . McQuail, an ABCA All-America selection who hit .397 with 20 home runs and 81 RBI in 2010, was chosen in the 30th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and was the first Canisius junior selected in the MLB Draft since 1994 . Mazurek has been a member of the coaching staff that has seen eight players drafted in the last five years, including four hitters (Jamieson, McQuail, Kevin Mailloux and Kevin Mahoney) .

The Golden Griffins have posted a team batting average of .300 during the last four seasons, including a high of .330 during the 2010 season when Canisius ranked 31st in the country . Canisius has led the conference in home runs in three of the last four seasons, highlighted by a total of 90 home runs in 2009 when Canisius was 19th in the nation . The Griffs have had at least 80 stolen bases in each of the last four seasons, ranking 45th

in the country during the 2012 season . Canisius has ranked in the top 35 nationally in being hit by pitch in three of the last four years . Canisius also has averaged 7 .2 runs per game since 2009, ranking in the top two of the conference each season .

Mazurek played professional baseball for three seasons — spending the 2007 season with Joilet Jackhammers of the Northern League and the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the Rockford Riverhawks of the Frontier League . Mazurek played in 75 games each the two seasons with Rockford .

Mazurek played for coach Mike McRae during his first two seasons in leading the Blue and Gold . The 2006 Canisius College Male Athlete of the Year hit a team-leading .358 as a senior with 44 RBIs, 18 steals and set a school-record with 68 hits . As a junior, Mazurek led Canisius with a .351 batting average with seven home runs, 41 RBIs and 54 hits .

Mazurek graduated from Canisius with a degree in physical education and also received his Master’s Degree in Sport Administration in May 2012 .

Assistant CoachSecond Season

Frank Jagoda

Frank Jagoda is in his second season with the Canisius . Jagoda moves into the assistant coach position for 2013 after serving as a graduate student manager during 2012 .

Jagoda came to Canisius from Jamestown Community College after serving as the taem’s pitching coach and recruiting coordi-

nator . During his two-year stint at JCC, working with head coach Antho-ny Barone, JCC made two consecutive Final Four fall season appearances, earned a No . 2 and No . 4 seed in the spring National Junior College Ath-letic Association Region III tournament and set a school record for wins in spring 2010 . In February 2011, Jagoda was part of the Detroit Tigers spring training camp while shadowing their Sports Performance Coach .

Jagoda served as the manager of the Wellsville Nitros of the New York Collegiate Baseball League during the 2012 season . He mentored a pitch-ing staff that captured a league-leading team earned run average (ERA) .

Academically, Jagoda received an A .S . in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Social Sciences from JCC while he finished his undergraduate studies at SUNY Fredonia with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, graduating Cum Laude .

Jagoda is now working on his Masters Degree in Sport Administration at Canisius is scheduled to graduate in May .

Graduate Assistant ManagerFirst Season

Andrew Russo

Russo is in his first season as a graduate stu-dent manager . Russo previously spent three seasons with the Golden Griffins as a catch-er, playing in a career-high 49 games during his senior season in 2011 . The Buffalo, N .Y . native posted a career-best 32 hits, 23 RBI and 20 runs scored .

Russo graduated from Canisius in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in fi-nance and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in sport administra-tion .

Academic Services Canisius College Academic Services provides academic, personal and career support programs that foster the total development for the student-athletes. A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences. Service programs preparing students for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle are also provided. Academic Services for Student-Athletes offers the guidance and direction needed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

Academic Advisor for Athletics ServicesThe Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius:

• Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility.

• Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study.

• Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress.

• Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans.

• Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors.

• Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial ProgramIn order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.

Study hall is to be used for course work only. A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tradition of Excellence2011-12 Canisius Athletics Highlights• The men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse

teams both won the program’s second MAAC Championships in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

• The Griffs were the only school in the country to feature two first-round draft picks in the NLL Draft when Adam Jones was selected third and Dan Coates eighth.

• Women’s lacrosse head coach Scott Teeter finished his tenure as Canadian Under-19 head coach, leading the team to the bronze medal. In addition, Randy Mearns was named the head coach of Canada’s senior team and will lead them at the 2014 World Championship.

• Drew Pettit of the baseball team earned first-team Capital One Academic America accolades for the second-straight year, becoming the first male in the MAAC to accomplish the feat. In addition, Kelly Reinwald of the women’s soccer team earned second-team honors.

• A total of 21 Canisius student-athletes were named to the all-conference team, including a record-setting four Players of the Year.

• Recent graduate Cory Conacher of the hockey team became the fourth rookie to earn AHL Most Valuable Player honors, while also adding Rookie of the Year accolades. He also became the second Griff to sign an NHL contract, inking with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Department of AthleticsWhat is a Griffin?

The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s ill-fated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

accolades. Male Athlete of the Year Shawn Parkhurst repeated as the MAAC champion in the 1,000 freestyle, while setting seven school records.

John J . Hurley assumed his position as the 24th president of Canisius College on July 1, 2010 . He is the first lay president in Canisius College’s 140-year history .

As president, he has led the college in the development of a new strategic plan ap-proved by the college’s Board of Trustees and entitled A Transformational Education: The Strategic Plan for Canisius College . He has begun the renovation of the former HealthNow building on Main Street into a comprehensive state-of-the-art interdisci-

plinary science center, a $68 million capital project that will be completed in phases . He has also started the conversion of the Rev . Andrew L . Bouwhuis, S .J . Library into a comprehensive technology-based learning commons . He has announced the Hamlin Park Initiative through which houses owned by the col-lege in the immediate neighborhood are being renovated and sold to buyers who commit to being owner occupiers . The college is also nearing its $90 mil-lion goal for the largest campaign in college history, A Legacy of Leadership: The Campaign for Canisius College .

A 1978 alumnus of Canisius, President Hurley served as executive vice president of the college from 2007 to 2010 and vice president for college relations from 1997 to 2010 . In these positions, he oversaw the college’s ad-vancement and external relations and managed institutional strategic plan-ning, integrated marketing, and legal and compliance issues . He also served as secretary to the Canisius College Board of Trustees .

President Hurley has played a significant leadership role in the college’s invest-ment in the campus since 1994, which now totals more than $150 million . He was the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing pro-

gram, which offers employees grants in the form of forgivable loans to assist them with the purchase of homes near the college’s central Buffalo campus .

A native of Buffalo, President Hurley is a graduate of St . Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore; Canisius College (BA 1978 summa cum laude, English/history); and the University of Notre Dame Law School (JD 1981) . He prac-ticed law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber, where he concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency .

President Hurley serves on numerous educational associations and as the rep-resentative of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s representative on the NCAA’s President’s Advisory Group . He serves as Buffalo Bishop Edward U . Kmiec’s appointee on the board of Fidelis Care New York, a $2 billion health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State . He and his wife, Maureen, are chairs of the Bishop’s Council of the Laity for the Diocese of Buffalo . President Hurley is also a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Board of Trustees .

Dr. Ellen ConleyVice President for Student Affairs

Ellen O . Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998 . One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college .

Dr . Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), ad-vanced education degrees from the Univer-sity of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State

(1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981) .

During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr . Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, de-veloped a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and De-velopment . She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program .

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration .

From 1987-89, Dr . Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator . Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams . In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports .

From 1982-1990 Dr . Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Gradu-ate Program . In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthen-ing Teaching in New York State .”

Bill MaherDirector of Athletics

Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his eighth year back in the Blue and Gold .

Under Maher’s watch, the Golden Griffins have enjoyed unprecedented success . In his seven seasons, Canisius teams have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments in addition to a WNIT ap-pearance in 2009, marking the most successful seven-year run in the school’s history .

Most recently, the Canisius lacrosse pro-grams enjoyed the most successful year in conference history with both the men’s and

women’s teams winning MAAC Championships in 2012 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament . It marked the first time that one school swept both titles in the same season . In addition, the synchronized swimming team continued their dominance during the 2011-12 season, winning the program’s 15th-straight ECAC Championship .

Overall, the 17 Canisius squads have accumulated 29 conference or regional championships under Maher’s leadership, with a number of teams producing the best seasons in program history . The Canisius campus has also undergone a number of renovations, including upgrades to the Demske Sports Complex and Koessler Athletic Center .

During the past seven seasons, 34 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards, including six in each of the past two seasons . Prior to Maher’s arrival, Canisius won 24 player or rookie of the year awards in the previous 10 seasons combined .

The achievements of Griffs go past graduation as well . Under Maher’s watch, 13 players have been drafted professionally . In 2011, Canisius was the only school in the country with two first-round selections in the National Lacrosse League Draft . In addition, former Griff John Axford pitches with the Milwaukee Brew-ers, while two hockey graduates have signed NHL contracts .

To go along with the school’s success on a team and individual level, Canisius has controlled the Battle of the Bridge series with local rival Niagara University . In four of the last five campaigns, the Griffs have claimed the Canal Cup, which is an all-sports competition between the two neighboring schools .

On an academic level during Maher’s tenure, Canisius has had 21 student-athletes recognized on the district level as Capital One CoSIDA All-Academic selections, including seven Capital One Academic All-Americans during the last three years .

Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex . A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007 . New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in

2008, while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008 . The Demske Sports Complex received a $1 .7 mil-lion facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards in 2008 . New offices for head coaches and their assistants along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010 .

GoGriffs .com, the official web site of Canisius athletics, has undergone two re-designs under Maher . The department has also developed a video webstreaming package for all home events in seven sports (men’s and women’s soccer, vol-leyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse) and is a part of the MAAC .TV package .

Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences . He chairs the MAAC men’s lacrosse committee and is also a member of the MAAC Technology Committee . Canisius has hosted eight MAAC Championships since 2005 and will also be hosting the 2013 Swimming and Diving Championships and the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championship .

A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05 .

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3 .6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which gen-erated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events .

He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament . Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season .

Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior . He re-ceived his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990 . Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994 .

He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002 . In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services .

Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David .

Traci MurphySenior Women’s Administrator/Associate Athletic Director

Traci Murphy is in her eighth year as associate athletic direc-tor and senior woman’s administrator for the Golden Grif-fins . Murphy joined the Canisius staff after spending seven seasons at the University of Louisiana at Monroe .

Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 17 Division I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete welfare . She supervises compli-

ance, academic counseling, strength and conditioning and athletic training . She also oversees the Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) . Murphy chaired search committees in 2009 for the women’s soccer head coach and in 2011 for the men’s soccer head coach, cross country head coach and strength and conditioning coach .

Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, wom-en’s cross country, men’s cross country, golf and softball . She serves on MAAC committees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gender and Minority Issues, Women’s Basketball and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee . She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program . The program, in col-

laboration with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Buffalo Bills, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involve-ment in sports .

Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998 . She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001, which involved the monitoring of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC .

In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, com-pliance and student-athlete services . Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department . Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St . Mary’s College of Maryland .

She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education . In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas .

The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, a vice-principal at Amherst Central High School, have two children, Sean (11) and Sarah (7) .

AdministrationJohn MaddockAssociate Athletic Director - External Affairs

John Maddock is in his 32nd year with Canisius College ath-letics and his 16th as associate athletic director for external affairs . Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports infor-mation director, the native of Washington, Ill ., was named an assistant athletic director prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into his current position in 1997 .

Maddock is responsible for corporate partnerships, market-ing, promotions and merchandise sales, licensing, special fund-raising events and oversees the operations of the ticket office and monitors athletic communications . The College’s sport supervisor for hockey, baseball, swimming and diving and syn-chronized swimming, Maddock chairs the Blue and Gold Golf Classic committee as well as the Shoes for the Shelter committee and is a member of the Canisius Athlet-ics Hall of Fame committee .

Maddock chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head swimming and diving coach in 2008, head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998 . He serves on the College’s Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo . He was also instrumental in planning the season-long 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04 .

Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State College . Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va .

A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1978 . In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the NACMA and the former chair of the CoSIDA Committee on Com-mittees . He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee and is a Vice President for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame .

Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North Atlan-tic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton . He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World University Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena .

Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T . Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information .

John and his wife, Priscilla, reside in Snyder with their daughters Mackenzie and Mikaela .

Matt ReitnourAssistant Athletic Director for Communications

Matt Reitnour is in his 12th year as a member of the Canisius College Athletic Communications staff and 2012-13 will be his first as the College’s assistant athletic director for commu-nications . Having previously served as the director of athletic communications for five years, he is the primary media con-tact for the school’s men’s basketball, softball and golf teams .

In addition to his duties as the primary media contact for three of the College’s athletic programs, Reitnour serves as the athletic depart-ment’s spokesperson, oversees the entire athletic communications staff and is in charge of content and the maintenance of GoGriffs .com, the school’s official athlet-ic department website . He was instrumental in the launch of the new-look GoGriffs .com in the summer of 2008 and oversaw the website’s second redesign in the fall of 2011 . Reitnour also serves as a producer for the department’s radio and Internet broadcasts and also handles the hiring and scheduling for the department’s game-day media relations and operations staff .

In 2009, Reitnour and his staff helped Canisius become the first school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to announce an environmentally-friendly and cost-saving measure to eliminate the printing of media guides by moving the process to a

digital, on-line format . He has helped oversee the department’s expansion into pop-ular on-line social media ventures such as Facebook and Twitter, and he’s also helped drive the department’s work involving more on-line video and audio productions .

Reitnour started at Canisius as the graduate assistant in the athletic communica-tions office before being promoted to full-time status in 2003 . He has also worked four NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments in addition to the 2003 Frozen Four, hosted by Canisius at HSBC Arena .

The Zionsville, Pa ., native came to Buffalo after earning his bachelor’s degree in communications from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa . where he served as a student assistant in the school’s sports information office for four years .

Reitnour earned his master’s degree in sport administration from Canisius in May 2004 . He is an active member of CoSIDA and ECAC-SIDA . He is currently a mem-ber of the CoSIDA University Division Management Advisory Committee and also serves on the ECAC-SIDA’s Rookie Committee . Since the summer of 2006, Reitnour has served as a professor in the Master of Sport Administration program .

Reitnour was married on July 4, 2009, to the former Kelly Sieber . The couple resides in Kenmore, N .Y ., with their daughter Grace, who was born in April 2011 .

Judi CasertaAssistant Athletic Director for Business Operations

Judith Russo Caserta begins her 24th year at Canisius College and is responsible for the day-to-day business operations of the athletic department, including overseeing the individual budgets of the 17 Golden Griffin athletic teams, monitoring travel and recruiting expenses, providing compensation for officials and serving as liaison with the College’s business of-fice and human resources . Caserta received the title of as-sistant athletic director for business operations during the

summer of 2012 and is also the sport supervisor for the rowing program .

Caserta served as the Golden Griffins’ senior women’s administrator from 1997-2000 . She prepares the Department of Education Equity Athletics Disclosure Act, along with the NCAA Audit of Agreed-Upon Procedures .

After graduating from Canisius, Caserta was the business manager of the family-

owned Russo Chevrolet dealership until the business was sold in 1988 . Caserta was hired as the Director of Accounting at Canisius in 1989 and was named the Athletic Business Manager the following year . During her tenure at the College, Caserta has served in many roles and capacities, including chairperson of the MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Committee and the MAAC Finance Committee . She currently sits on the NCAA Intercollegiate Athletics Financial Reporting Advisor Committee .

Caserta graduated from Canisius in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and has over 30 years of accounting, organizational and management experience . She received her Master of Science in Sport Administration in 2008 from the College . Her Masters’ internship was serving as the General Chair of the 46th annual Porter Cup golf tournament in 2004 . Away from Canisius, Caserta enjoys spending time with her family, golfing, cooking and singing the National Anthem at local sporting events . She resides in Youngstown, N .Y ., with her husband, Tom (‘77), and son, Anthony .
