Head Coach Vicki ChliszczykYork University ‘98 | 5th Season (59-34) | 2010-11 & 2011-12 ECAC Coach of the Year

A two-time Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Coach of the Year, Vicki Chliszczyk begins her fifth season at Towson in 2015.

Towson Gymnastics has a proven history of success and as just the fourth head coach in program history, maintain-ing that standard of excellence is a challenge. Chliszczyk (pronounced Cull - liss - chick) has proven that she isn’t someone who is afraid of a challenge.

The Tigers returned to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) in 2013 and had four gymnasts earn spots on the EAGL all-league teams. Chlisczcyk coached two Tigers to the NCAA Regionals, and the Tigers continued to excel academically, placing seven on the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastic Coaches for Women (NACGCW)

academic All-America team. In 2014, Lauren Ross earned EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

In 2012, the Tigers produced another excellent year under Chliszczyk’s guidance with a 20-5 mark overall and a second-place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship meet. For the second consecutive year, she earned ECAC Coach of the Year honors. She sent three of her Tigers to the NCAA Regionals, where Kacy Catanzaro earned NCAA Southeast Regional Gymnast of the Year, after receiving ECAC Gymnast of the Year earlier that season. The Tigers as a team placed sixth in the nation in a competition for NACGCW academic All-America honors.

In her first season as the Tigers’ coach, she led the team to an eye-opening 18-1 record and championships at the Temple University Invitational, the Cornell Big Red Invitational, and Towson’s own Shelli Calloway Memorial Invitational. Along the way, she also coached the Tigers to impressive wins over a pair of EAGL opponents: George Washington and Rutgers. Although the Tigers came up short in their quest to win a seventh straight ECAC champion-ship, she was honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year.

Prior to coming to Towson, she spent five years at the University of Mary-land-College Park.

In 2005, she joined the staff at Maryland and made an immediate impact on the program. In her first year with the Terrapins, they posted a 16-12 record and finished fifth in the EAGL. In 2009, the Terps earned a berth in the NCAA Southeast Regionals where they finished sixth. That season Maryland was ranked in the top 25 for most of the year. In 2010, Chliszczyk was named as the EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year as she helped Maryland earn a second straight NCAA Southeast regional appearance.

During her tenure at Maryland, she coached an impressive group of gym-nasts, including Abigail Adams, ‘11 who was the 2009 EAGL co-champion on balance beam. She also worked with four gymnasts who were named first team All-EAGL: Talia Tossone, ‘10, Rachel Colon, ‘07, and Brandi George, ‘10. With the help of Chliszczyk, Adams was the EAGL co-champion in the all-around in 2010.

In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Chliszczyk has been a member of staff at several prominent camps.

In 2001, she joined the staff at the renowned Woodward Gymnastics Camp, a summer gymnastics camp in Woodward, Pa. During her nine years of coach-ing at Woodward, she served as a program director and a member of the master staff. In her role at Woodward, she managed a staff of 30 coaches that

trained 200-300 gymnasts each week.

For three years, she worked for Coach Gail Goodspeed at the University of New Hampshire’s Gymnastics Camp. She was also part of Coach Mark Stevenson’s staff at North Carolina State University’s Gymnastics Camp for two years.

A 20-year member of the Milton Springers Gymnastics Club in Milton, Ontario, Canada, Chliszczyk was a competitive gymnast for 12 years. She competed in the Provincial Championships for 10 consecutive years and made such an impact on her club team that the Milton Springers Gym-nastics Club established an award in her name. The “Vicki Chliszczyk Award for Dedication” is presented at the end of each season to the club’s most dedicated athlete.

Chliszczyk graduated from York University in North York, Ontario, Cana-da with a B.A. degree in philosophy.

She is a member of the NCAA Alliance of Women’s Coaches and grad-uate of the 2012 Women’s Coaches Academy in Denver Colorado and serves as the NCAA Southeast Regional Score Verification Coordinator and Co-Chair of the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Competition Committee.

Assistant CoachBecky Schaller

Michigan State ‘99Fourth Season

Becky Schaller is in her fourth season as an assistant gymnastics coach.

After graduating from Michigan State in 1999 with a bachelor’s in kinesiol-ogy, she spent five years as an assistant optional coach and a compulsory coach at Harford Gymnastics Club. In 2003, she was promoted to head op-tional coach where she coached for Teresa (Arnold) DiMauro, a former Tiger gymnast and a member of the Towson University Athletic Hall of Fame.

She spent one season with Towson Gymnastics as a volunteer assistant before officially joining the staff in 2011.

A four-year standout for Coach Kathie Klages, she was an all-around per-former who helped the Spartans to a 27-3 record and a second-place finish in the Big Ten Conference as a freshman.

As a sophomore, she was a member of a Spartans team that posted an 18-13 record and won the USA Gymnastics NIT championship. In her junior season, she contributed to the Spartans’ 23-6 record.

During her career at Michigan State, she was one of the team’s top beam and bars workers. She had a career high 9.90 on beam and a 9.85 on bars. Her career high all-around score was 38.675. As a senior, she was a medical intern with USA Gymnastics team physician Dr. Larry Nassar.

Schaller was one of the top scholastic gymnasts in the state of Maryland while competing for Harford Gymnastics Club. A competitor at Harford from 1985 to 1995, she was the United States Association of Independent Gymnas-tics Clubs (USAIGC) national all-around champion in 1992.

A two-time USA Gymnastics Level 10 national qualifier, she was the national champion on floor exercise in 1990 and 1993. An Elite National Qualifier who won national championships on bars (1991) and beam (1993), she graduated from Fallston High School in 1995.

During her collegiate career, she served as a counselor at the Michigan State Gymnastics Camp. She was also an optional coach at the Great Lakes Gymnastics Club for a year.

Schaller resides in Forest Hill with her husband, Chris, a former lacrosse player at Michigan State and Penn State. They are the parents of two sons.

2015 Season OutlookDuring 2013-14, the Towson Gymnastics team faced not only a talented lineup of opponents but also the injury bug. This season, the Tigers are back, healthy and ready to compete for an East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) title.

Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk believes, on the whole, “they have come back much stronger and in better shape this year than they have in the past.”

Towson returns 10 experienced gymnasts and welcomes a five-member freshman class.

SeniorsAccording to Chliszczyk, Nicolette Vignola is a great example of the stronger, tougher Tigers. Vignola did a lot of work over the summer and is doing skills she’s never done before at Towson. Those new skills could earn her a place in Towson’s all-around lineup.

Sammy Lutz was a consistent all-around performer last year and should be again. Last season she won her first career all-around title at Pittsburgh. Lutz also finished second in the event four times in 2014. She has changed her vault, which may help in her all-around score.

Janis Konkle has always been in great shape, according to her coach, but this year, she came back mentally stronger. She puts in extra work every day.

Lauren Ross could compete on three events again this year. The senior won three all-around titles last season. She has been work-ing to clean up her form on bars and have more consistent landings on floor. Ross should also be staple in the beam lineup.

JuniorsLydia Thompson (right) is coming back from ACL tear she suffered last season. She is expected to be in the bar lineup and is working back into expanding her events.

Katie Sassa was out almost all of last year but has worked hard over the summer. Chliszczyk noted she has everything back and her form is cleaner than before. Sassa is working on strength and consistency.

Vicki Vesecky will continue to compete on bars for the Tigers and is working on form and landings.

SophomoresBailey Gallagher (opposite page) has come back in better shape than last year, a season in which she fought a back injury that she now has under control. Chliszczyk says she is cleaner and more consistent in practice and can make run for a spot in the all-around.

Bridget Steffen should compete in three events in 2015. She is much more consistent on bars, and her body awareness has improved to the point where she can more easily and quickly self-correct.

Coach Chliszczyk calls Bayleigh Fobes a hard worker with the potential to compete in the beam lineup. Fobes has changed her vault and release move on bars and is working on an upgraded tumbling pass in her floor routine.

FreshmenChliszczyk believes this year’s freshmen will have an immediate impact on the Tigers’ performance in 2015.

Noelle Harada could find a spot in the all-around lineup. Chliszczyk calls her bar routine “phenomenal” and says she is very consistent and clean on beam and floor. Harada has potential to be in vault lineup as well. As a senior in high school competing for the Libertyville Gymnastics Academy, Harada was second in the state in the all-around, won the state beam title and finished third on the floor at regionals.

Katie McGrady should compete in floor and on beam to start. She has been working hard on vault and bars, is very powerful on floor and has great height on tumbling passes, and has a nice, steady beam routine.

Coach Chliszczyk could definitely see Tyra McKellar as a member of Tow-son’s all-around lineup. She thinks the freshman has one of the best bar routines in the conference in terms of difficulty and execution, has unique combinations on beam, and three very strong tumbling passes. McKellar qualified for the Junior Olympic Regionals all four years of high school and won the Maryland state title in the all-around and bars as a junior.

Gabriella Yarussi could also find a spot in the all-around. Chliszcyzk de-scribes her as “cat-like” on beam. Yarussi also has a great vault with lots of height and distance. Chliszczyk calls her a great dancer on floor and says her handstands on bars are phenomenal. Yarussi helped her club win state, regional and national titles. As an individual, she qualified for both region-als and nationals.

Lauren Cahalan could potentially see action in all four events. She has a very uncommon release move on bars, according to her coach; is very consistent on beam; and also has three very good tumbling passes. Cahalan qualified for the Junior Olympic Nationals as a senior and the JO NIT as a junior. Her freshman year she was the Level 9 Maryland All-Around champion and the Eastern National Beam champi-on.

“I feel like compared to last year, we’re in a completely different and way better place,” summed up Chliszczyk. “The quality and quantity of our depth is much better. People are going to need to fight for their spot and push each other. We’re really looking forward to that happening this year because it will make us a stronger team.”

The 2015 Schedule“We are super-excited about our schedule,” she continued. “We are competing against teams we typically have not seen in the past – Missouri, Kent State, and Texas Women’s – and we are looking forward to seeing teams from different areas of the country and going to different areas of the US.

“It will be exciting to see how we stack up against programs that have gone to NCAA Regionals and Nationals as teams in the past. We’re looking forward to hosting UNC and Michigan State in SECU Arena and continuing to compete against two Big 10 schools in Maryland and Rutgers. In fact, we’ll be competing against teams from eight difference conferences.”

Alum Catanzaro Stood Tall on“American Ninja Warrior”In the summer of 2014, Tiger gymnastics alumna Kacy Catanzaro ‘12 became the first woman in “American Ninja Warrior” history to both scale the 14’ warped wall and complete the Dallas city finals to earn a trip to the reality show’s ultimate challenge: Mt. Midoriyama.

“American Ninja Warrior” is a reality television show that tests competitors with obstacles like the salmon ladder, the swinging frames, the spider climb and the warped wall - the downfall of every other female competitor to appear on the show.

During qualifying, she made history as the first woman in the show’s six seasons to successfully climb the warped wall. Fourteen feel tall with a short runway and a steep curve, the show’s warped wall seems stacked against short contestants like the 5-0 Catan-zaro.

Her success in qualifying propelled her to the Dallas city finals where Catanzaro had to pass the slanted quintuple steps, a log drop, a tilted platform that moved when she ran across, a swing jump to a cargo net, ring toss (which involved her using rings placed over pegs to cross water) and the warped wall - again.

Once again, her training as a gymnast and preparing for the show helped her complete the course and become the first woman to reach Mt. Midoriyama in the American version of the show. Catan-zaro was unable to finish the show finals course, but she plans to return to the show in 2015 to try again.

Since the finals of “ANW,” she has made appearances on nation-al television on shows like “Ellen” and “The Today Show.” She returned to Towson on August 30 to be honored at halftime of the football season opener.

Catanzaro made an appearance on the field at halftime, accompa-nied by Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk and current members of the gymnastics program.

The 16th-leading scorer in school history, Catanzaro led the Tigers to a 20-5 record as a senior and a four-year mark of 75-16. She was a member of the Tigers’ 2009 and 2010 ECAC championship teams. As a senior, Catanzaro was named the NCAA Southeast Regional Gymnast of the Year and the ECAC Gymnast of the Year. She won the all-around title at the ECAC Championship meet and the ECAC title on the bars.

The East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) became a reality on July 31, 1995, when eight universities banded together to form a union solely for the purpose of showcasing gymnastics on the East Coast.

The EAGL consists of the University of Maryland, University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University and the University of Pittsburgh of the Atlantic Coast Conference; Rutgers University of the Big East Conference; George Washington University of the Atlantic 10 Conference; the University of New Hampshire of the America East Conference and Towson University of the Colonial Athletic Associ-ation.

There has been very little change in conference membership. The eight charter members remained unchanged from 1996 to 2004 when Towson left the EAGL to rejoin the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Towson was replaced by George Washington in the league’s lineup.

The EAGL remained the same from 2005 to 2012 when West Virginia departed the EAGL due to WVU’s new all-sports affiliation with the Big 12 Conference. When WVU left the EAGL, Towson returned to the league that it left for the 2013 season.

TOWSON IN THE EAST ATLANTIC GYMNASTICS LEAGUE

Jenn Baierlein ‘03 (above) was named EAGL Outstanding Senior Gymnast in ‘03. Niina Parjanen ‘00 earned All-EAGL honors in vault, floor and all-around (below).

Page 31: 2015 Gymnastics Guide - Amazon S3...2014/12/10  · 2015 Gymnastics Guide Senior Lauren Ross Sophomore Bailey Gallagher Senior Nicolette Vignola 2015 Towson Gymnastics Roster Name

The Towson Gymnastics program has had a long and successful history, which continues to present day. Founded in 1968, the gymnastics program has an overall record of 642-243-2 (.726), which is one of the best in all of Towson Athletics.

Since becoming an NCAA Division I program during the 1986-87 academic year, the Tigers have won 14 Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) championships and reached the NCAA Regionals 13 times, including a string of nine straight bids. Towson’s best finish at NCAAs came in 1990 when the Tigers reached the finals and placed ninth in the nation. Towson has also won a U.S. Gymnastics NIT title in 1996 and USA Gymnastics Championship in 2007.

While competing in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL), the five Tigers have won 12 individual championship titles, three gymnasts of the year, two outstanding senior gymnasts, two scholar-athletes of the year and a coach of the year awards. Towson has had two NCAA Division I All-Americans (Gabi Weller, 2000; Erin Shanley, 1997) and two Southeast Regional Gymnasts of the Year (Kacy Catanzaro, 2012; Kristen Presutti, 2003).
