About the Festival:

The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival was created in order to fill a void that was present in the steelpan community. As other festivals were researched, it was discovered that this void was not exclusive to the great lakes area. In fact, this void was present throughout the world. The void being referenced is the lack of educational opportunities for young steelpan enthusiasts to learn about the instrument as well as improve their playing abilities.

Many of the other existing festivals are focused on the performance

and competitive side of being in a steelband. Although there are many festivals that offer some sort of education as well, education has been secondary to providing a venue for performing and competing.

The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is focused on creating a non-competitive atmosphere for bands to explore the incredible versatility of the instrument without fear of being penalized for being different. Along with this unique opportunity, GLSF is also concerned about educating tomorrow’s players with the history of the instrument.

The steelpan is a young instrument and has a very unique history. Unlike nearly any other instrument, there are still people alive today who were around at the birth of this instrument. Many people who are involved with this instrument are unaware of it’s history, or the people who helped make it. The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is providing the opportunity for pan enthusiasts to truly experience this history by bringing in guest artists that have devoted their lives to the study of the instrument both musically and historically.

Thank you to our 2015 supporters!!

Potts & Pans Steelband -Potts & Pans Steelband is based out of Woodstock, IL and

is the vision of Matt Potts. Upon graduating from college, Matt quickly realized there was a severe lack of awareness within the general public regarding this instrument. Not willing to sit back and allow this instrument to be overlooked by his community, Matt decided to purchase enough pans to start a steelband. Matt soon realized he would have to be self-sufficient, so along with his playing, managing, and arranging duties, Matt taught himself how to tune and is currently developing his building skills.

Potts & Pans, Inc. NFP is a Not-For-Profit organization set up to help foster the growth of the steelpan within the Chicagoland area. In addition to performing at various events, they also offer instructional classes with local high schools. The group is currently working on establishing free programs for the community. All of these projects are supported by the performing side of Potts & Pans, Inc. NFP - Potts & Pans Steelband.

The current core members of Potts & Pans Steelband consist of Christina Guerrero, Anthony Jay Houston, Emily Rojas and Matt Potts. The group has provided multiple educational concerts and workshops around the great lakes region and was a guest artist at the 2012 International Steelpan Festival in Montreal, Canada. They have worked with artists such as Glen McClure, Darren Shepard, Encore Youth Choir, McHenry County Youth Orchestra, and more. Potts & Pans recently won the Chicago Music Award for “Best Calypso/Soca Entertainer.” The group is quickly gaining attention throughout the area for their playing ability, educational prowess and adaptability.

Due to the support from the businesses and individuals listed in this program, this third annual event was able to come together smoothly. Please show you appreciate their support of the steelpan by supporting them or even just thanking them. In today’s world, the arts are receiving less and less funding, and events like this are not possible without us all working together. This festival came from a conversation between Matt Potts and Denette Lynch about a void in the current steelpan festival realm. That simple conversation is what lead us to this point today, and it could not have been done without the help from a lot of individuals and businesses. The support has continued to grow and has resulted in GLSF growing bigger every year! This growth helped lead to the creation of a charitable organization for music education, Culture, Arts and Music. Contact us today to find out how you can help make a difference by helping support diversity within our community through music education.

Re: Great Lakes Steelpan Festival 2015 Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is pleased to present this proposal for consideration. We look forward to partnering with you to provide students and community members with a unique opportunity to learn about and spread steelpan knowledge and appreciation. The objective of the Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is to provide the participants with an experience of working with living legends alongside future legends. The festival will be held at Hannah Beardsley Middle School, 515 E Crystal Lake Ave, in Crystal Lake, IL.

The festival will provide a series of clinics in which each ensemble will get 45 minutes with a Guest Artist clinician. In addition to clinics, the GLSF guest artists will provide several workshops and presentations. Each artist will give a 50 minute interactive workspace. In order to expose students to professional level performances, there will be an evening concert to conclude the day. The concert will take place on Saturday night from 8:00-9:30 and will feature the guest artists, each band, and the mass band which consists of all participants performing on stage together to open and close the concert.

We appreciate you taking an interest in helping our students develop music skills through the exciting Great Lakes Steelpan Festival! At this time we are actively pursuing financial sponsorship of the Festival and would appreciate your consideration in this matter. The overall expected cost of Great Lakes Steelpan Festival 2015 is $15,000.00. Please consider becoming a

The Composers:Gary Gibson (Both Mass Band Pieces) -

Gary Gibson is a Seattle-based musician with a 40-year history in steelpan. Recognized internationally as an influential composer and performer of progressive music for the steelpan and steel band, Gibson blends his knowledge of classical and jazz music with his passion for traditional Caribbean rhythms and forms. He has released five critically acclaimed albums of original steelpan music to date (with a sixth coming soon), and is active as a clinician/performer with collegiate and high school steel bands across the United States.

In addition to being a winner of Trinidad's 2004 "Panorama National Steelband Championship" (as a member of the Exodus Steel Orchestra), Gibson also took first prize in two of three categories in the 2009 "Symphony and Steel" composition contest, which combined the symphony orchestra with small steelpan ensemble (locally performed by P&P and MCYO).

Kyle Krause (Song of Sunrise) -Kyle Krause wrote this piece specifically for Potts & Pans to

premier at GLSF15. Although a native of Marengo, Kyle is currently studying music composition at Peabody Institute in Baltimore. Kyle is becoming known for his modern composing style and interest in experimenting with different sound sources and how to incorporate them into music. In addition to “Song of Sunrise” Kyle was also commissioned to compose a suite for solo steelpan that utilizes water to bend pitches.

Kurry Seymour -Kurry Seymour   received a B.M. and M.M. in Music

Performance from West Virginia University. While attending WVU, Kurry had the opportunity to study the steelpan with the creator of the modern instrument (and GLSF Guest Artist), Dr. Ellie Mannette, Gamelan with Dr. Mantle Hood, African Drum and Dancing with Dr. Paschal Younge and Japanese Taiko Drumming with Dr. Tim Peterman. Additional study has been with She-e Wu, Tim Adams, Mark Thurston and Paul Rennick.

In addition to an extensive world music background, Kurry has also performed with the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps. He has instructed the Carolina Crown Percussion section from 1999-2002 and the percussion section of the Pride of West Virginia from 1997-2002.

In higher education, he taught at Alderson Broaddus College in West Virginia and worked as the founding Director of Percussion Studies and Assistant Director of Bands at Coastal Carolina University from 2002-2010 where he received a "distinguished professor" award in 2008.

Kurry has performed or presented at PASIC, MENC, SCMEA and the South Carolina Day of Percussion.

He currently resides in Summerville, SC and works in the Dorchester School District Two. Within the district, he serves as a world music specialist and music educator. He is also an assistant director of bands and percussion-world music director at Ashley Ridge High School.

Kurry has had the wonderful opportunity to share his passion of the arts and music as a clinician/performer at several Universities, Conventions, and School Districts throughout the country.  Kurry Seymour is endorsing artist/clinician for Vic Firth, Zildjian, Thomas Stave Drums, The Steelpan Store and Remo.

The Guest Artists:Dr. Elliott ‘Ellie’ Mannette -

In 1946, as a youth in Trinidad, Mannette crafted the first musical

instrument from a 55 gallon container and revolutionized the art form. Mannette is also credited with being largely responsible for developing many of the instrument’s innovations and seven of the orchestra's 10 voices.

After moving to New York City in 1967, Mannette has been at the fore-front of the growth of the steel band movement in the United States. In recognition of his significant contribution to this thriving art form, Mannette received the 1999 NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, the highest honor for the traditional arts given in the United States. In November 2000, and after a 33 year absence, Mannette was given an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West Indies - and received a “Hero’s Welcome” upon his return home to Trinidad.

During the late 60’s, there were only a few steelband programs scattered among some of the larger cities on the East Coast. However, as the years progressed, Mannette traveled extensively building, tuning, and promoting the art form. As a result, successful steelband programs can be found from New York to Washington State and the Dakotas to Texas.

Regarded as a consummate master craftsman, Mannette revolutionized the tuning process early in the instrument's development (1941) by reversing the method of sinking (from convex to concave), and would go on to introduce a more scientific approach to the tuning process.

In partnership with WVU since 1992, Mannette directed a unique and comprehensive apprenticeship program (known as the University Tuning Project). With the help of WVU Research Corporation, that venture turned into a for profit business known as Mannette Steel Drums Ltd, dedicated to providing the world with master craftsmen, instruments, and services. Mannette Steel Drum became the first 'technology transfer' company in May 2000 for WVU's Research Corporation.
