Great Lakes Equestrian Festival
Top Traverse City AttractionsSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore The Sleeping Bear Dunes are a
breathtaking symphony of water, sky and towering sand dunes on our Lake Michigan
shoreline. Part of the national park system since 1972, Sleeping Bear is one of America’s
most profoundly beautiful landscapes: a 64-mile curve of beaches, coves, islands and hills
along the west coast of the Leelanau Peninsula.
Traverse City Wine Country The Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas are dotted
with vineyards and wineries that consistently bring home awards from regional, national and
international competitions. Many of the area’s nearly 40 wineries also boast awe-inspiring
hilltop settings that have made them attractions in their own right – and almost all are open
for tastings and tours.
Historic State Theatre An Art Deco masterpiece that reopened in 2007 after an
extensive restoration, the State is the headquarters of the Traverse City Film Festival.
The renovation added new projection and sound equipment, new seats, a new lobby,
new carpeting, and a glow-in-the-dark “starry night” ceiling, while enhancing the most
elegant features of the earlier design.
1891 City Opera House This downtown Victorian landmark is one of only 18 opera
houses left in Michigan. The building has been restored to its former splendor and plays
host to community events, concerts, comedy acts, films and other entertainment all year.
Historic Lighthouses At the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum near Northport
and the Mission Point Lighthouse in Old Mission, visitors can see how lighthouse keepers
and their families lived in the early 1920s.
Boutique Shopping Traverse City’s picturesque, tree-shaded downtown has over
200 unique galleries, boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants, providing almost endless
opportunities for shopping and browsing. Other shopping areas include the scenic villages
of Leland, Suttons Bay, Elk Rapids, Alden, Bellaire and Northport.
Grand Traverse Pie Company In just a few years, this business has evolved from
a small shop serving fruit pies to a “bakery café” with pot pies, quiches, sandwiches, wraps,
salads soups and a host of fresh baked desserts.
The Village at Grand Traverse Commons The castle-like buildings of our
Victorian mental asylum, surrounded by a 480-acre wooded park, has become the center
of an ambitious historical redevelopment of restaurants, shops, galleries and apartments.
Two Casinos The Leelanau Sands Casino north of Suttons Bay and the Turtle Creek
Casino near Williamsburg are both operated by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and
Chippewa Indians.
Dennos Museum Center Located at Northwestern Michigan College, this
museum’s ever-changing exhibits feature historical and contemporary work by artists of
state, national and international stature, and whose permanent display of artwork by the
Inuit people of the Canadian arctic is one of the most complete in the world.
Music House Museum This extensive collection of rare automated musical instruments,
located in a lovely historic farmhouse, includes many pieces that are still played for visitors.
Traverse Tall Ship Company Taste the exhilaration of the Days of Sail aboard the
114-foot schooner Manitou, a replica of a 19th-century schooner that’s available for groups
of up to 62 people.
The Interlochen Center for the Arts The internationally-renowned center has
produced some of the world’s most talented performers (Josh Groban and Norah Jones
studied here!) and its year-round Arts Festival features top-notch national and international acts.
Schoolship Inland Seas provides a “floating classroom” where people of all ages can
learn about the Great Lakes. This mighty red-sailed tall ship combines the adventure of
sailing with the discovery of Great Lakes science.
Kilcherman’s Christmas Cove Farm John and Phyllis Kilcherman have dedicated
their Northport farm to the production of more than 240 almost forgotten “antique apple”
varieties. (They also feature the “World’s Largest Old Glass Pop Bottle Collection.”)
Microbreweries Traverse City brewmasters are known for pushing the envelope when
it comes to using unusual flavorings in their beers and ales. That may be one reason why
Draft Magazine named this small community one of America’s three newest Emerging Beer
Towns. With 14 to choose from, you are sure to find one to fit into your schedule.
Farm Markets/Orchards Traverse City lies in the most argriculrually diverse part of
Michigan, and it’s surrounded by roadside farm markets where visitors can purchase local
fruits, vegetables, baked goods, jams, jellies, maple syrup, honey and other produce.
