The Last Turn – 200+ MPH IN A CARRERA GTFLATSIXES.com by Leonard Turner

for now-departed military staff andcamouflaged bunkers for MIG fightersstanding alert, still offered high gradeconcrete, and a lot of it. This was agood thing; our ability to drive the carson the highway had been limited by aprevious press group (I’m not sure, but Ithink they were from a country to thesouth that strongly favors red cars). These unbridled enthusiasts had alreadytrashed two Carrera GTs before wearrived. Rumor was that one had beenwound up way too tight, and the otherhad met an immovable object. So—forus, less unmonitored street time andmore time on the runway with theremaining cars.

I’ve always been more of aphotographer than a driver, and 200mph seemed pretty fast to me. Sure, the917 had punched out some 240 mph atLe Mans many years before on thatsupremely long and then un-chicanedback straight, but numbers above 200were well beyond my experience orexpectation, even with someone elsedoing the driving. Still, that was one ofthe plans for that day at the huge oldabandoned Russian airbase just outsideof Berlin.

The occasion was the press launch ofthe Carrera GT in late 2003, and theunlikely site, with its decaying barracks

I was quietly relieved that I wouldn’t beexpected to go out and push the GT toits limits—it would have surely foundmine first. Porsche’s driver andinstructor for the day was ex-EuropeanRally champ Walter Röhrl, always oneof our favorite people on these trips, and with thousands of developmentmiles under his belt. Completelyunflappable to the point of appearing tobelieve that nothing could possibly gowrong, he was nevertheless completelyfocused in the car. Look at those eyesand his demeanor in the image. Thisman is not daydreaming.

We started our run well down therunway, the building visible at the endfar away and tiny. It was a little bit likefalling out of a tree and watching theground come up to meet you; I don’tremember ever seeing a small buildingbecome so big (and solid!) in so short atime. Just after the GPS speedometerbetween my feet touched 335 kph, some208 mph, Röhrl summoned the ceramicbrakes with nose-bleed effect to avoid ahome invasion, circled around and did itback the other way. And he and theCarrera GT did it over and over andover. Impressive.

Windshield Washer Clogged

Question: I have a 1990 911, C2 with 96,000 miles. My passenger side windshieldwasher line is partially clogged up. What is the best way to clear that? The driver'sside is not plugged.

Answer: Submitted by Chris Powell. You can clear it with a small needle, but beaware that the most common problem is the check valve underneath the cowl. Thepassenger side has an L-shaped white plastic piece located directly below the nozzle.

Rear End Clunking Noise on 996

Question: I have a 1999, 911 Carerra with about 46,000 miles. I have a distinctengine/suspention/transmission "Clunk" I can't seem to trouble shoot. Both privateand Porsche mechanics and dealers have done their best and report that all thesuspect normal guilty bushings, mounts and fasters upon inspection and testing arenot warn or tight and otherwise "look good". The sound seems to come from thelower rear when the car traverses uneven surfaces at slow speeds or when drivingover potholes/divits in the road. Are there any not so obvious cluprits you may havefound?

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. One thing that comes to mind - if you've reallychecked all of the flexible suspension components carefully - is to consider theengine/transmission mounts. These are well known replacement items and it couldbe that the engine is simply bottoming out on the mounts, giving you a clunk noisethrough the chassis when the suspension travel is substantial.

Boxster S Grinding Noise on Start-up

Question: My Boxster S, tiptronic with 95,000 miles has recently started making agrowling noise on startup. This noise lasts just a few seconds and only happens ifthe car has been sitting for at least a number of hours. Is this a sign of the dreadedIMS bearing failure?

Answer: Submitted by Daniel Cleary. Without hearing the noise I can only guessthat what you are hearing is your starter going bad. Generally if you have an engineproblem the noise doesn't go away. The starter is only engaged while you turn thekey to the start position. If you hear a strange spinning noise for a couple of secondsafter you release the key it a good bet the starter should be replaced.

Odometer Not Working

Question: I own a 1997, 911 Carerra 4S. My odometer and trip meter stoppedworking the last time I drove my car. Is this common? Does anyone know how tofix this problem?

Answer #1: Submitted by Joel Reiser. This is not common at all. I wouldrecommend getting the car in to a qualified Porsche repair shop.

Answer #2: Submitted by Ansel Meadors. Yes, I think it is a common problem withat least the 993. When mine stopped working several years ago I found that a lot ofpeople were having this problem. A little plastic gear in the VDO speedometer justbreaks and of course our friends at Porsche know it is a problem but do they holdVDOs feet to the fire... No! They just let the customer hold the bag.

I fitted my speedo with a gear supplied by a guy in Chesepeak, Va (I think). Costless than $10. He makes them at his home/garage.

Air Conditioning Upgrade

Question: I have a 1981 911SC Targa with 66,000 miles that is in excellent originalcondition except for a chain tensioner upgrade. The air conditioner works poorlyand I am about out of Freon R-12. I would like to switch to R-134 and update the airconditioning (hoses, evaporator & etc). My question is will a compressor upgradefrom York to rotary reduce the value of the car since it clearly isn't original.

Answer: Submitted by Bill Burris. The question really comes down to whether ornot your SC is a concours car. It sounds as if you drive it (though the mileage isvery low) so you'll have to make the decision whether or not to sacrifice comfort forpoints off in a concours. If you keep the R-12 system, you're facing an uphill battlewith the refrigerant since it is guaranteed to leak out - even seeping through theflexible hoses - so all you can do is chase it. Migrating to an R-134a system is agreat investment if you want cold air, but you'll have to make the call. Air cooled911's are getting so much money in the resale market right now I personally don'tthink the compressor will make a bit of difference; you can always keep the originalparts if a future owner wants to restore it.

der RÜCKSPIEGEL

On a beautiful andunseasonably warmSunday, I joinednearly 60 membersfrom the Motor-Stadtregion on their FallColor Tour that con-cluded at the SandhillCrane Vineyards inJackson, MI. Theevent, which was

hosted by Okemos Auto Collection in-cluded lunch, a tour of the winery, and atasting. In addition, one lucky partici-pant won an afternoon at the PorscheExperience Center located at the newheadquarters for Porsche Cars NorthAmerica in Atlanta. A few weeks later,I travelled to Cleveland to attend North-ern Ohio Region’s Wine Train Excur-sion aboard the Cuyahoga ValleyScenic Railway, an event so popular itsold out. We were treated to a selectionof chef inspired appetizers as we tasteda variety of wines. During the evening, Ipresented several items to the region aswe celebrated their 55th Anniversary. Itwas a pleasure to be able to help the re-gion commemorate such an importantmilestone.

I want to wish everyone a very happyholiday season. We’ve had a lot ofprogress and accomplishments over thepast 2 years, and I want to thank thoseRegion Officers and members that haveworked with me to help make Zone 4 asuccess. I was honored to be invited toand welcomed at so many wonderfulevents throughout the zone. It has beenan important goal of mine to continue tohave our Zone work as 1 cohesive unit.

Since each region is unique, a real efforthas been and will continue to be madeto promote each region’s signatureevents throughout the zone thus provid-ing a greater variety of activities to ev-ery Zone 4 member helping to enhancetheir PCA experience.

During this past year, we have contin-ued to improve the Zone 4 Website. We also organized the first NationalConcours Judges School ever to be heldin Zone 4, and as a result have national-ly trained judges in nearly every regionin the zone. We have expanded the ClubRacing program and are looking to addeven more races in the coming years. We have also greatly increased thenumber of Street Survival programs; infact, Zone 4 hosts the most schools inall of PCA, a fact I am very proud ofsince this is such a beneficial program.

Just because we’ve put our cars awayfor the winter, it does not mean that wecan’t experience the same camaraderieand friendship enjoyed during the driv-ing season. Many regions will be host-ing Holiday Parties this month, andwhat a great way to kick off the holi-days by celebrating with your PCAfriends.

Looking ahead to 2016, plans are beingmade for the PCA preview at the NorthAmerican International Auto Show inDetroit. Information will be sent outand/or posted as soon as details becomeavailable. Please remember to checkyour in boxes, region’s newsletter andwebsite, as well as the Zone 4 websitehttp://zone4.pca.org for the most up to
