Dear Friends Old and New,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the fifth annual Hard Hat & Black Tie Dinner and Auction. Tonight, we celebrate Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East and its continued efforts to build strong, vibrant communities.

Because of our generous event sponsors, every dollar we raise will go directly toward Habitat’s mission in Portland and Gresham. Tonight, you can make a difference in the lives of local, hardworking families, offering a hand up, not a hand out, to build and purchase their own homes. Your generosity will help hundreds of children in the Portland area have a safe, healthy place to sleep at night.

A big thank you to those who have graciously donated their time and effort to help plan and make tonight’s event a success.

Please raise those paddles high and often! Together, we can help make dreams for Portland families come true.

In Partnership,

Dawn Holden, Board Chair Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East

NICK ALLARD Emcee

Nick Allard was formerly the morning Meteorologist for KGW News at Sunrise. Before coming to KGW, Allard worked throughout the northwest reporting the weather. Nick received his B.A. in Broadcast News & Production from the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University. He enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons and his dog.

The Compton Family

Ruthann Compton is a single mother of two – Kaylee, 14 and Kingston, 8 – and a Portland native. With a family history marked by substance abuse, Ruthann is determined to break the cycle of addiction and poverty, and provide a healthy home for her children to grow and thrive. Despite working fulltime as an accounting clerk, she simply does not make enough to afford a decent place to live.

“Most of my income goes to our housing, despite it being subsidized,” said Ruthann. “I can’t wait to own my own home, freeing up space for other families in need of subsidized housing, and building equity that I can pass down to my children.”

Ruthann is also excited about the stability homeownership will provide her children. Kaylee is a straight A student and wants to be a lawyer when she grows up, and Kingston is autistic, attending a private school that specializes in his needs.

“Having a place to call our own is important because it will provide a positive environment for Kaylee to study, and I will be able to provide all the comforts for Kingston’s needs too. We are so grateful to Habitat. This is really a dream come true.”

WITH EVERY BUNDLE OF LUMBER BOUGHT TONIGHT, another wall is raised, and with every wall that’s risen, another home is built for a deserving Habitat family. If we’re able to buy 500 bundles of lumber this evening, we will be able to frame 20 homes for 20 Habitat families!

Your generosity will help hundreds of children in the Portland area have a healthy and safe place to sleep tonight. This is a wonderful opportunity to give local, hardworking, low income families a hand up.

Help build healthy homes and healthy families, one bundle of lumber at a time!

Next, a 4-course dinner will be served in elegant fashion out on the beautifully landscaped patio and lawn with a view of Mt. Hood. Have you been looking for a way to make your off-time more meaningful and valuable? Here’s your chance! Take time on with Habitat’s 33rd annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Memphis, Tennessee. The former home of “The

King,” and the birthplace of blues, soul and rock n’ roll, is ready to welcome you! In contrast to the amazing music and southern hospitality Memphis has to offer, it also suffers from a lack of affordable housing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 26.9% of the population in Memphis lives in poverty and 12.7% of those have income at 50% below the poverty level. In October 2016, thousands of volunteers from across the U.S. will meet to build and repair 100 strong, permanent homes in partnership with families currently living in poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis has served more than 445 families in the Memphis area via its house-building program, and it will have served 1000 families by the end of the 2016 Carter Work Project.

“These Habitat projects have been a deeply emotional experience, not only for us and the other thousands of volunteers, but especially for the families who’ve had their lives transformed.” — President Jimmy Carter

DETAILS

• One volunteer spot at the 2016 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Memphis, Tennessee.

• Dates for the project are Sunday, October 2 through Saturday, October 8, 2016. • Six nights of hotel accommodations and six days of meals are included.• Transportation will be provided to and from the hotel and build site each day.• Transportation to and from Portland not included.
