Free Family Days Hit Attendance Milestone!

Monet Fourth-Grade School Tour Program

Telfair’s 2015 Fourth-Grade School Tour Program provided every fourth-grade student in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System with a free field trip to the groundbreaking show Monet and American Impressionism. More than 2,700 students from 35 schools visited, learning how Impressionists used color and composition in their work. All tours made curric-ulum connections to Social Studies, Fine Arts, and English Language Arts and invited students to make their own shrink-film paintings based on works in the show, which were later displayed in a curated museum installation. Thanks to support from the Byck-Rothschild Foundation, Inc., the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Great Dane, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, and Wells Fargo, this program—along with other school field trips throughout the exhibition run—brought the beauty of Monet to over 7,000 children across Savannah.

Telfair’s popular Free Family Days enjoyed record-breaking attendance in 2015, providing 8,373 people with free access to award-winning exhibitions and educational resources, as well as interactive activities including art workshops, demonstrations, music concerts, 3D printing, studio projects, and more. Encouraging families to work together and stretch their creativity, these events helped both children and adults explore diverse concepts from screenprinting, to WWII history, to hands-on art projects inspired by Georgia’s Gullah Geechee culture. Held each month, the top-attended Free Family Days included PULSE and Monet & Art Fair, inviting thousands of people to enjoy renowned art while putting their own creative engines to work.

Education

PULSE Art + Technology Festival Receives NEA Funding! The 2015 PULSE Art + Technology Festival received prestigious funding from the National Endowment for the Arts for the first time in festival history! With the help of this competitive award, Telfair commissioned two site-specific works by Los Angeles media artist Vince McKelvie, who transformed the Jepson Center through 3D interactive ani-mations. The museum also presented wildly inventive works including a popular solo exhibition by Swiss artist Katja Loher, a projection-mapped sculpture by Texas artist Andrew F. Scott, and interactive installations by Brooklyn duo Purring Tiger and by SCAD physical computing students. The festival took innovation to the next level with two Oculus Rift Virtual Reality installations (among the first shown publicly in Savannah), driving PULSE attendance to an all-time high with over 4,000 visitors during its free festival week.

Telfair Evening Lectures Telfair’s evening lecture program experienced a surge in attendance thanks in part to the TAG-sponsored Monet and American Impressionism lecture series, which attracted some of the largest crowds in museum history. Exploring a range of artistic styles, subjects, and time periods, opening night lectures enjoyed significant audiences for a variety of 2015 exhibitions, including PULSE, The Visual Blues, In Living Color, Hot Pink, Cheers, Come as You Are, and the annual Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Lecture, for a total evening lecture attendance of more than 2,600 people.

Outreach Programs and New Veterans Art Class Expanded in 2015 to serve an even greater portion of the Savannah community, Telfair’s outreach programs provided 158 visits and free art classes to 1,892 people across the city. Transforming our classes into new, multiday workshops, these programs included extended sessions at Golden Age Centers, community centers, and organizations serving audiences with special needs. Through a generous grant from the Alan S. Gaynor Fund of the Savannah Community Foundation, Telfair even expanded its outreach at the Veterans Affairs Savannah Primary Care Clinic to a year-round art and painting program, providing veterans with in-depth art classes every week, as well as monthly guided visits to Telfair’s three sites.

Studio Classes and Camps Offering in-depth studio classes in a variety of artistic mediums—from drawing and painting, to photography and videogame design—Telfair’s art courses are taught by professional artists and provide learning opportuni-ties for individuals of all skill sets. Perfect for beginning artists or regular practitioners, Telfair’s art classes served 553 adults and children in 2015. Additionally, thanks to ongoing support from Kathy Von Hollen on behalf of the Margaret F. Perryman Charitable Trust, the museum provided 30 free scholarships for low- income students throughout Savannah, giving them an opportunity to gain hands-on artistic experience and build their creative portfolios.

Impact of Your Gifts

The Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Foundation: Challenge GrantBeyond our galleries and three museum sites, the foundation of Telfair Museums stems from the passion and loyalty of our devoted members. As supporters of art’s ability to inspire, captivate, evoke, and transform, Telfair members keep art alive in the Savannah community and promote artistic diversity both in and beyond the museum.

Driven by this desire for diversity and membership support, The Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Foundation issued Telfair Museums a $25,000 challenge grant to significantly increase membership for Telfair’s Friends of African American Arts (FAAA) group by the end of the year. The outcome could not have been more successful. Thanks to this generous gift, support for FAAA reached new heights in 2015, tripling in size and cultivating new excitement about the work of African American artists and scholars.

Dedicated to promoting appreciation and understanding of African American art, FAAA celebrates visual art through a series of cultural excursions, social gatherings, guided tours, and public lectures all year round. Now, through the tremendous support of The Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Foundation, FAAA boasts 104 members—its largest number in Telfair history!—uniting individuals of all ages, genders, and ethnicities in appreciation of the cultural contributions of African Americans, and advancing Telfair’s mission to connect diverse audiences through art.

Monet and American Impressionism: A Record-Breaking Exhibition!

In 2015, Telfair made artistic history by bringing the work of Impressionist master Claude Monet to Savannah for the very first time. Organized by the Harn Museum of Art in partnership with Telfair Museums and the Hunter Museum of American Art, Monet and American Impressionism featured four paintings by Monet alongside some of the greatest American Impressionists of all time, exploring how these artists launched a new way to paint in response to the influence of French Impressionism.

Breaking all attendance records at the Jepson Center, this extraordinary exhibition would not have been possible without the vast support of our local community, uniting more than 60 individual and corporate donors who generously gave over $100,000.Thanks to this incredible public support, Monet and American Impressionism became one of the most successful exhibitions in Telfair history. Over 1,240 people attended the opening celebration (the largest crowd ever for a single museum event!), and the exhibition attracted 33,203 people, more visitors than ever before for a three-month period.

Additionally, Telfair provided free Monet tours to 2,793 fourth-grade students in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools System, and the show inspired 930 new Telfair memberships, cultivating new excitement for the museum and a deeper appreciation for visual art. A partnership with Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens even brought Monet’s flowers to life with The Spirit of Monet Plant Collection, planted throughout the museum, Savannah’s Historic District, and even at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. All of this, and more, was made possible thanks to the immense support of our devoted community, whose breathtaking generosity and commitment to Telfair Museums continue to enrich Savannah’s art and cultural landscape for future generations.

Alan S. Gaynor Fund of the Savannah Community Foundation: New Veterans Art Program

As a service-based museum, Telfair is always searching for ways to bring the joy of art to individuals beyond our walls and across the Savannah community. Providing over 160 visits to hospitals, rehabilitation centers, Golden Age Centers, community centers, and therapeutics programs all year long, Telfair strives to share the benefits of art in real, transformative ways. This is why the museum was thrilled to receive a generous grant from the Alan S. Gaynor Fund of the Savannah Community Foundation, allowing us to create a brand new Veterans Art Program providing 48 therapeutic art workshops—nearly one class each week—to veterans at the Savannah Primary Care Clinic.

In partnership with Savannah Veterans of the Arts, this program celebrates art by everyday heroes, using creativity to help military service members cope with issues such as anxiety, depression, and rehabilitation. The results were incredible. One participant wrote, “As a disabled veteran, I did not believe there was anything but medication and counseling

to help me cope with my service-connected PTSD, depression, and anxiety. The more I learned about painting, however, the more art filled a gap that counseling or medication could not.”

Another participant noted, “When I first entered the class, I resisted any artmaking activities. I thought I could only do stick people. Now, I read late into the night and watch videos to grow even more as an artist. I even teach my grandchildren.”

Thanks to the wonderful support from the Alan S. Gaynor Fund of the Savannah Community Foundation—and to the incredible success of these classes—Telfair plans to continue this program for years to come. As part of this service, each participant is coached toward a final, museum-ready work of art, which is later featured in a curated exhibition in the Jepson Center in celebration of their art, their stories, and their sacrifice.

Lila and Dale Critz: Supporting Historical Restoration at the Owens-Thomas House

As the steward of two National Historic Landmark sites, Telfair takes its responsibility for preservation very seriously. Committed to bringing the cultural and artistic heritage of Savannah to life, the museum engages in restoration efforts all year long—from scientific paint analysis, to architectural research, to interior and exterior maintenance that ensures the historical authenticity of our sites and enhances the visitor experience.

For this reason, Telfair is immensely grateful for the generosity of Lila and Dale Critz, whose extraordinary gifts in 2015 allowed for the

extensive restoration of our beloved Owens-Thomas House. Supporting the assessment and repair of its period shutters, the restoration of the basement, and numerous other preservation projects, their wonderful contribu-tions served to maintain this landmark museum and help visitors forge deeper connections to our collective past for years to come.

Providing a rare snapshot of American history, the Owens-Thomas House offers a unique cultural experience immerses audiences in the story of the most powerful and least powerful people in Savannah. The wonderful support of individuals like Lila and Dale Critz keeps this historic experience alive, helping Telfair share this extraor-dinary story with visitors of all ages, while safeguarding a treasured piece of Savannah history for generations.
