Dear Friend,

For an at-risk child, the world seems to be full of closed doors. Living in troubled neighborhoods afflicted with widespread poverty, many underprivileged children develop the impression that they are not deserving of opportunities that seem to come so easily to their more affluent peers. Participating in athletics is too expensive. Fresh, healthy food is several bus lines away. Minimum wage jobs are more accessible than a college education.

You can help us unlock the potential in those we serve and open the doors to success! One of our Patch alumni, Kim, helped start a business serving people with mental disabilities and found that the key to advancing within that agency was a college degree. With this motivation, Kim resumed studies in her sociology major as part of our College Scholars Program. She is also working full-time while raising three children and a grandchild. Kim’s story is a wonderful example of how Patch children and families don’t give up when faced with an obstacle on the way to their dreams. There’s always a way to get through the door!

“You don’t work your way out of poverty, you educate your way out.” This is a phrase that former longtime staff member Roosevelt Chin loved to say, and it still rings true in the halls and hearts of The Cabbage Patch board and staff members. In January 2014, The Cabbage Patch Board of Directors began working on a 3-year strategic plan. One of the goal outcomes was to expand and enhance programs. At the top of the list was growing and our Educational Opportunities College Scholars Program to serve more students.

A partnership with The University of Kentucky has been a major asset to this initiative. Our goal is for the total Cabbage Patch College Scholars to increase to 50 students by 2019/2020 with at least 35 of these students at UK. In order to reach our goal, we need “seed money” until we can normalize this budget increase within our annual fundraising efforts after this ramp-up phase.

Your support is the key to opening the door to a college career for the young people we serve. Together, we can break the cycle of multigenerational poverty and bring hope to the next generation.

— J. Tracy Holladay, Executive Director

OPENING DOORS FOR NEW FRIENDSLearning through play is an integral part of The Patch’s programming. While children participate in games, camps and athletics, we work with them to cultivate social skills that help them to relate to their peers in a respectful and confident manner.

During summer camp, a partnership with Life Adventure Center in Versailles, Kentucky provided us with a wonderful opportunity to work on such values with a wonderful group of girls in an inspiring woodland environment. It was a mixed socioeconomic group participating in the weeklong overnight adventure. Roughly half of the girls were from middle class families, while the other half were being raised by single mothers and living below the poverty line. The way the girls are used to socializing are very different depending on whether they go to higher performing schools in better neighborhoods, or struggling schools in high crime areas. We quickly discovered that, because of the contrasting backgrounds of the participants, the ropes course activity at the camp was going to be particularly challenging. The girls who had more socioeconomic privileges tended to be more assertive, and this was perceived as “thinking they are better than us and telling us what to do” by the other girls.

Back at the cabin, a discussion about communication and problem solving began to bridge the gap between the two groups. Encouraged to share their feelings in a non- confrontational way, the girls learned how to show their interest in creating relationships instead of showing frustration and creating a divide. After that, the ropes course became a learning tool that helped the group work more effectively together. The girls left camp with a new understanding of the potential of teamwork-a lesson that will serve them well throughout their lives.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES SPOTLIGHT:

When Ivan* strutted his way into our building just a few months ago, we knew he was someone special. He is bursting with personality and charisma, he has a keen intellect and quick wit and his inquisitive mind is always seeking answers.

Like many of the children at The Patch, Ivan is loaded with potential, but due to struggles at home and a difficult life situation he lacks opportunity for extracurricular activities that could position him to thrive. For him and hundreds of other children each year, The Patch is a place to nurture God-given gifts.

How do we engage Ivan? We make sure he knows that The Patch is a place where he can put his guard down, open up and share some of his challenges. In turn, we have a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between Ivan’s abilities and opportunities in ways that open life-changing doors. The mission of The Patch is to give guidance and cultivate children’s abilities, unlocking vast potential!

BUSINESS DONOR SPOTLIGHT:

In May 2015, The New York Times published a story about the importance of transportation for those working to improve the quality of life for their families. The article referenced a Harvard study that identified commuting time as the strongest factor in escaping poverty. According to Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard economist, transportation is more of a contributing factor to social mobility than several other factors, including crime and elementary school test scores. At The Patch, we have seen how reliable transportation can change lives, and that’s why we are thrilled to partner with Progressive Insurance, along with Oxmoor Auto Group and the National Auto Body Council, for the Recycled Rides program!

“At The Patch, these are people who are trying to better themselves,” says Progressive Claims Manager Bill Carlisle. “I look up to those people! I no longer take it for granted every time I walk out to my driveway and put the key in the ignition.”

Through the Recycled Rides initiative, Progressive donates a totaled car to be restored to like-new condition and presented to a Patch Parent in need of transportation. Bill will walk the salvage yard with an Oxmoor representative, looking for a vehicle that will make a good rebuild. Technicians at Oxmoor Auto Group donate their time and talents to get the car road-ready. It’s even possible to take two cars of the same model and join the front and back ends, as they have done in the past!

Progressive employees support the Recycled Rides program by contributing donations and gift cards which can pay for gas, or by purchasing items from The Patch family’s wish list. Progressive Social Responsibility Leader Kristi Parker came up with an incentive program that allows employees to wear jeans to the office if they bring a donation. The program is a big success, and employees enjoy making the dream of reliable transportation come true for a Patch family.

“We are giving these families the freedom to do what they need to do to make life changes,” says Kristi.

2015 was the third year that a Patch family has benefited from the Recycled Rides program, and we are so grateful for the generosity of Progressive, along with Oxmoor Auto Group and the National Auto Body Council!

THE LEGACY OF TED MERHOFF

The Cabbage Patch family honors the life of Theodore “Ted” Merhoff, who went to his eternal reward on February 5, 2015. Ted was a dedicated Board Member Emeritus and Past President of the Cabbage Patch Board of Directors. He was also instrumental in the financial support of The Patch, first during his career as Senior Vice President and Director of Charitable and Endowment Services for PNC Bank (Formerly Citizens Fidelity), and after his retirement, when he served as Executive Director of the V.V. Cooke Foundation.

7

NAMED ENDOWMENT FUND MEMORIALIZES THEODORE “TED” MERHOFF

Ted is remembered by the children of The Patch for his volunteer work with the High Adventure program. As part of the Recreation/Youth Development program, High Adventure activities foster confidence and teamwork through outdoor exploration. Ted accompanied two groups of inner city children, many of whom were experiencing the natural landscape for the first time, on 100-mile bike trips in Missouri and Virginia. Serving as a mentor during the emotional and physical challenges of these adventures, Ted led by example and helped the children maximize these profound learning experiences.

Established in 2015 by the V.V. Cooke Foundation in memory of Ted, The Theodore “Ted” Merhoff Memorial Overall Mission Support Endowment Fund supports The Patch’s mission to profoundly change lives. Endowment funds are extremely important income sources for The Cabbage Patch. Because we do not receive government funding and are not a Metro United Way agency, we must raise sufficient funds annually to support our ministry. It is through named funds like Ted’s that a life’s legacy spans generations, and we have seen time and time again how this enduring love changes lives.

For information about establishing a named fund at The Patch or if you would like to make a donation in honor of Ted, please contact Jennifer Scott at [email protected] or (502) 753-4446.

FAMILY SERVICE SPOTLIGHT:

In Family Services, we often tell our clients to call us if they don’t know what to do in a particular situation and that we will do our best to help them figure out the next steps. One of the people that helps us out from time to time with these hard questions is attorney Courtney Howell-Kidd of Howell & Kidd Attorneys.

This year, Courtney has helped us with a number of legal questions and issues. Some of these situations included a client trying to appeal her inclusion on Kentucky’s child abuse and neglect registry due to a domestic violence situation that occurred over 5 years ago, a former Recreation member wondering about his parental rights/financial responsibilities regarding his newborn child, and a parent wishing to become the guardian for a child who was previously in her care. When people are struggling to break the cycle of poverty, they have very little room for error in their decision-making. The information and knowledge that Courtney is sharing with our clients is helping them to make good life decisions.

Courtney, and other professionals in Louisville, are part of the large network of people who are helping us to make a difference in the lives of the families we serve. We could not do this work without their help.

Many children start coming to The Cabbage Patch to play basketball. They hear that there is a gym and that’s all they need to know! Once they arrive, however, our Recreation and Youth Development Specialists challenge them to try new things. We strive for a balance of athletics, creativity and education – and that’s exactly what Wil Jones found at The Cabbage Patch during the 1970s and 80s.

“I couldn’t get enough,” Wil says of his time at The Patch. I did everything – art, camps…I was often here from open to close.”

Director of Programs and Facilities Rod Napier has some fond memories of Wilbur from their time together during camps at Otter Creek Park.

“I’d be making a fire or cooking up some stew,” says Rod, “And I’d notice that I had a shadow. That shadow was Wil, watching everything I did, learning everything he could. He used to take games apart and put them back together again to get them working for the other kids. You know, sometimes I’d be sitting at the campfire and think how I would be proud to have Wil as a son. Over the years you just see some children who are very special, and Wil was one of those children.”

Today, Wil’s career path makes use of the diverse skills he learned at The Patch. His tech savvy, mechanical talents have been put to good use working for Midwest Metals, and he runs his own lawn service, 3D Green Lawn. He has also parlayed his creativity into a remarkable face painting business, Louisville Fancy Faces, where he uses airbrushing and hand painting techniques to bring a touch of magic to parties and other gatherings. It’s inspiring to see Wil benefiting from all the God-given talents that he discovered at The Patch.

We are thankful to call Wil part of The Patch family. He has donated his time as a volunteer, and the lifelong friendships that he made have kept him connected to our mission and legacy.

“The Patch is with you for life,” says Wil. “I will always treasure my time here.”

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

Lea Fischbach is a bit of a legend at The Cabbage Patch! She was honored by President Bush with the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2007 and was a WLKY Bell Award winner in 2010. As Board Member Emeritus, she is known as the “voice of the children” when it comes to learning about the program needs of our ministry. In the Educational Opportunities department and beyond, she is known to the children as Miss Fish, a favorite volunteer who always has a word of encouragement, a fun activity and maybe even a homemade cupcake.

“Miss Fish is what we call a trusted volunteer,” says Mayghin Levine, Manager of Educational Opportunities. “When we put a child in her care, we know that we won’t have any behavioral issues from that child, because everyone loves Miss Fish! In addition to her extraordinary bond with the children, she also anticipates the needs of the staff and offers wonderful support for us.”

Miss Fish heard about The Patch at her church, Anchorage Presbyterian. Her first visit was in early 1995. She had been trained in Cleveland to work with children who had reading and learning difficulties and was looking for a place where she could make a difference in education.

“I wasn’t sure I wanted to drive ‘all the way downtown’ to volunteer,” says Miss Fish. “BUT once I met Jackie Shea and Mr. Chin I knew I would feel very comfortable and helpful at The Patch. It is important to me as a volunteer to feel helpful, not just be someone folks have to make room for. I worked for years with Jackie, first just helping with homework. But Ms. Shea and I shared an equal love of all things crafty, and the ‘deal was sealed.’ It wasn’t until 2002 that I was asked to join the Board. I have felt that it’s my ‘special assignment’ to share the needs of the children with board members.”

Miss Fish volunteers approximately 12 hours per week at The Patch in addition to her board duties. She divides her time between tutoring and homework help and working with fellow star volunteers Leslie Ellis and Judy Buckler in the Seed to Table program. She has a special talent for sneaking in a lesson in the midst of what seems to be playtime, like challenging a child to a math lesson while following a recipe.

We are grateful for Miss Fish and the leadership she contributes to the board, staff and children! Do you have talents you would like to share with us? Contact volunteer coordinator Pamela Satterly at [email protected].

The Cabbage Patch is a Louisville charity meeting the needs of local at-risk children and families. Because The Cabbage Patch is not a Metro United Way agency and chooses not to participate in funding streams that can create dependency, such as government grants, we must rely on individual donors like you to finance our programs. Won’t you please help by giving generously?
