Mark Ricciuto began with the West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), making his debut at the age of 16, before being recruited by Adelaide as a zone selection prior to the 1993 season.

Consistently considered one of the best midfielders in the competition during the early 2000s (decade), Ricciuto shared the 2003 Brownlow Medal with Nathan Buckley and Adam Goodes, and was selected in the All-Australian team for four consecutive seasons between 2002 and 2005, captaining the side in both 2004 and 2005. Having played more of a forward role in his last two seasons, Ricciuto retired at the end of the 2007 season, having played a total of 312 games for Adelaide, kicking 292 goals.

Also representing South Australia in interstate football and Australia in the International Rules Series, Ricciuto was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2011, and the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Tony Shaw was recruited to Collingwood from Reservoir-Lakeside to make his debut in 1977 alongside brother Ray. He was a small midfielder at 170 cm who didn't have the natural ability or quality skills of others but his courage and determination made him a fine rover. He did struggle in his early years to cement a senior position in the team. Shaw played in the 1980–1981 losing Grand Final sides.

In 1984, Shaw won the Copeland Trophy as the Magpies best and fairest player for the season, as well as playing with second brother Neville. In 1990, Shaw captained the club to a historic premiership, the club's first in 32 years, defeating Essendon. In the same season, Shaw won his second Copeland Trophy.

Shaw retired in a tearful farewell with 313 VFL/AFL games and 159 goals.

Matthew Lloyd (born 16 April 1978) is a former professional Australian rules footballer for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League.

A highly decorated full-forward, Lloyd's Australian Football League honours include seventh highest goalkicker in VFL/AFL history, Coleman Medals as leading goalkicker for three seasons, life membership as well as winning both the Mark of the Yearand Goal of the Year awards. Lloyd also belongs to the small group of players whose first kick in the AFL resulted in a goal as well as players to have kicked the "ton" – over 100 goals in a season – twice. Among his representative honours are five All-Australian selections, twice representing Australia in International rules football and a member of the Victorian state team.

Sam Newman attended Geelong Grammar School, where his father was a teacher. He made his debut for Geelong in 1964 when he was 18 years old. Early in his time at Geelong he acquired the nickname “Sam”, by which he is now well known.

During his career (1964-80) with Geelong, he captained the club. He also won two best and fairest awards (1968 and 1975). During the first semi-final against Collingwood in 1967, Newman suffered a serious injury which forced surgeons to remove part of his kidney. He was also selected as an All-Australian player in 1969. He played for the Victorian State team eight times. Newman retired in 1980, having polled 100 Brownlow Medal votes throughout his career. In 2002, he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
