    INTRODUCTION

This survey of Graduate Assistant Stipends was patterned after the Faculty

Salary Survey by Discipline as developed by Oklahoma State University. The data

was gathered in the same format and the results printed in much the same way. For

comparison purposes, stipends are reported as if each graduate assistant was

employed at 0.50 FTE. Three additional questions were asked of each institution:

    1. Is in-state tuition waived for graduate assistants?

    2. If yes, assuming a 9-credit hour enrollment for a semester, how much is

graduate in-state tuition for one semester?

    3. How much of the above figure was waived?

The IPEDS coding structure (Classification of Instructional Programs [CIP] produced

by the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Office of Education, and

published in 2010) was used for identification of academic departments. This is the

fifth year to use the 2010 Edition CIP codes and will result in noticeable differences

within some of the 2-digit and 4-digit CIP averages. If only one institution reported

data in a particular discipline, the 6-digit code was merged with other similar

disciplines at the 4-digit level. If there were no other institutions reporting even at

the 4-digit level, the discipline was merged at the 2-digit level. The 2-digit and 4-digit

summaries have been printed in this book along with the regular 6-digit CIP codes.

  • iv

Beginning with the 2013-2014 publication, the survey was organized by CIP Code

with information from what used to be Sections A, B, and C, summarized in boxes

below the CIP Code. The publication still reports stipends summarized by: “ALL

SCHOOLS” which contains average, high and low stipends with the number of

graduate assistants and reporting institutions. The “ADJ BY TUITION/FEE

WAIVER” adjusts the stipend data for institutions who waived some or all of the in-

state tuition and/or fees, but not all of them waived in-state tuition. The “RANKED”

information, found only at the 2-digit CIP level, summarizes the adjusted average

stipends from each institution and then ranks each institutional average stipend

    without identifying the institution.

    Definition of Terms

STIPEND All stipends which are reported in the survey are based on a 9-10 month academic year and assume a 0.50 FTE appointment. Any compensation for summer academic work, fringe benefits, or perquisites is not included in the salary data. AVERAGE STIPEND The average stipend is based on the survey information with the assumption that all individuals are employed at 0.50 FTE as noted above. HIGH STIPEND The highest stipend of any individual of the defined group for which information is reported. LOW STIPEND The lowest stipend for any individual of the defined group for which information is reported. SAL FACTOR This is the ratio of the average stipend for a particular discipline divided by the average stipend for ALL DISCIPLINES COMBINED. A SAL FACTOR of greater than 1.00 indicates the average stipend for a particular discipline is greater than the average stipend for ALL DISCIPLINES COMBINED. NUM The number of graduate assistants whose stipend was included to compute the average salary. The percentage below the number represents the breakdown of graduate assistants in a given discipline/major field who hold each rank. INS The number of institutions which have reported stipend data for a given academic rank and discipline/major field.

  • vii

TEACHING ASSISTANTS Graduate assistants whose primary emphasis is instruction. RESEARCH ASSISTANTS Graduate assistants whose primary emphasis is research. GRADUATE ASSOCIATES Graduate assistants who typically are compensated at a higher level than most graduate assistants because they are employed at a higher FTE or teach more classes. They may earn almost as much as junior faculty members. ALL RANKS The collection of teaching and research assistants with associates as a group.
