PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDearCBMTGMembers,

I ampleased to present the annual report of theCanadianBlood and Marrow Transplant Group for 2015/16. Over thepast year our society has continued to grow in size andscope.At384memberstheCBMTGhasthelargestandmostdiversemembershipever.WehaverenewedourfocusonourSpecialInterestGroupsandhavebroadenedouractivitiestoincludeadvocacyinthefieldofbloodandmarrowstemcelltransplantation.

InthepastyeartheCBMTGhaspositioneditselftobethevoiceofprofessionalsworkinginthefieldofbloodandmarrowstemcell transplantation. We led the response to the MelphalanshortagelastyearandworkedcloselywithrepresentativesofHealthCanadatosecureanewsupplyofthiscriticaldrug.InordertosupportthisactivitywehaverealizedthatweneedtodevelopclosertieswiththeindividualtransplantprogramsandhaveestablishedaBMTDirectors’Committee.WehopethatthiscommitteewillenableustoadvocatemoreeffectivelyforresourcesforthecareofBMTpatients.

Wehavealsodecided to engagemorewithCanadianBMTpatientsandtheirfamilies.TheinauguralPatientSymposiumheld after the Annual Meeting in Vancouver was anopportunity to hear from patients about what would havehelpedthemgoingthroughtransplant.Many indicatedhowhard it was for them to find information about living post-transplant written from the patient’s perspective. They alsoexpressedaninterestinbecomingmoreengagedinresearchand in knowledge translation. We will continue to supportthis groupby creating a Patient and Family Special InterestGroupwithintheCBMTG.InfuturewehopetoincludePatientSymposia in future meetings to build stronger relationshipswiththesenaturalallies.

ResearchremainsacentralfocusoftheCBMTG.TheNationalRegistry continues to grow and by the end of 2016 willreceivedatafrom16Canadiantransplantcenters locatedin

all regions of the country and reflecting both pediatric andadult programs. The first publication from the registry waspresentedbyDr.K.PaulsonattheBMTTandemMeetingsinHonoluluinMarch2016.WorkhasalreadystartedonournextpublicationdescribingthestateofHCTinCanadainthe21stCentury.Dr.K. Schultz has joined theBoardof theCBMTGin the position of Director-at-Large, Research, and will belookingatinfrastructureneedstofosterinterventionalstudiesinHCTinCanada.

Our educational programs remain strong and will expandfurther under the new leadership of Dr. K. Lepic, Director-at-Large, Education. We continue to see growth in theattendanceatwebinars.WewillfocusondevelopingleadersinBMTbyhostingaleadershiptrainingprograminTorontoinNovember.Ratherthanholdingalargeannualmeetingnextyearwewillhostthreethemedmeetingsin2017;themeswillincludeInnovation(Calgary),Resilience(Winnipeg)andBeforeandAfterCare(St.John’s)andmeetingsareopentoCBMTGmembersfromacrossthecountry.WewillmeetupagainatournextAnnualMeetinginOttawainthespringof2018.

CBMTG’sgoalsintheupcomingyearwillbetocontinuetobuildtheresearchinfrastructure,encouragecollaborationbetweenprograms to address clinical, regulatory and administrativechallenges, and to further develop the association specialinterestgroups.

I wish to thank the CBMTG board of directors, committeechairs, members and staff who work towards the vision ofCBMTG. I inviteallmembers tobe involvedandparticipatewiththeassociation.

National RegistryTheCBMTGhasdevelopedacomprehensiveoutcomesregistrycontainingdetailedclinicaldataonCanadiansundergoingbothautologousandallogeneichematopoieticcelltransplantsfromprogramsacrossCanada.Wehavedataforover18,000patientsdatingbackto1990.TheRegistryisbasedinWinnipegandisundertheleadershipofDr.KristjanPaulson.TheRegistryisanimportantresearchtoolforCBMTGmembers.Somepossiblebenefitsofhavingcountry-widedata:

1. TransplantactivityandpracticesacrossCanadacanfacilitatethedesignandconductofclinicaltrialsbyCBMTGmembercentres.

2. TransplantoutcomesreflectingCanadianclinicalpractice.

3. Practicepatternsandoutcomescanbeusedbyhealthservicesresearchersandprogramstoinformpolicymakersand payersaboutNationalstandardsofpractice.
