Cline scored a career-high 28 points on 13-of-17 shooting at Rhode Island. He became the first Richmond player since Dan Geriot in 2008 to tally 13 field goals in a single game. Terry Allen has emerged as an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year candidate. He has 24 consecutive games in double-figure scoring, the longest active streak in the A-10 and tied for the 10th longest streak in the country. Richmond currently leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 25th in the country in field goal percentage (48.8). The Spiders have had eight games shooting over 50 percent from the field. Fordham head coach Jeff Neubauer was an assistant at Richmond from 1996-2002. A career night from junior T.J. Cline wasn’t enough as the Richmond men’s basketball team dropped a 77- 65 road decision to Rhode Island. Cline finished with a career-high 28 points on 13-of-17 shooting, while also adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals. It was his third 20-plus performance of the year. Senior Terry Allen extended his double-digit scoring streak to 24 with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists on the night. Richmond won the rebounding battle, 30-27, but couldn’t cool off the hot shooting Rams, who knocked down 12 three-pointers on the night. Both teams shot around 45 percent from the field and assists and turnovers were nearly even. Richmond had a 32-20 edge in points in the paint, but SJU hit 11 three-pointers. CHRISMOONEY

HEAD COACH11th SEASON

PRINCETON, 1994

In 2015-16, head coach Chris Mooney begins his 11th season at the helm of the Richmond Spider men’s basketball program.

Mooney ranks third all-time in the Spider record books with a career record of 195-152 at Richmond for a winning percentage of .565. He is also the fourth longest-tenured coach in the Atlantic 10.

In 2015, Mooney earned his 200th overall win as a Division I head coach.

He has led the Spiders to six postseason appearances, including NCAA Tournament trips in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and a trip to the NIT Quarterfinals in 2014-15. In the spring of 2011, Mooney’s Spiders made national headlines en route to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, knocking off five-seed Vanderbilt and Morehead State in the process. Richmond finished both the 2010 and 2011 seasons ranked in the Top 25.

Richmond has averaged 21.4 wins over the last seven seasons, with four 20-win campaigns. Playing an always-tough schedule in and out of conference, the Spiders have finished in the top 100 of the RPI in five of the last six campaigns. UR has also tallied 12 wins over ranked opponents since 2008, including six victories in the last seven games against ranked teams at the Robins Center.

Since 2008, the Spiders have gone 80-51 against A-10 opponents, tallying more conference wins than any other league team over that stretch. UR is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer a losing season in the last eight years.

Richmond has 16 wins over BCS teams in the last decade with many of them nationally ranked. UR has knocked off Arizona State, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Purdue, Florida, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Mississippi State, St. John’s, Virginia Tech, South Florida and Seton Hall.

Mooney’s teams have protected their home court, going 80-18 for a winning percentage of .816 over the last six seasons at a Robins Center that has averaged nearly 6,000 fans a game, ranking fourth in the Atlantic 10 last season.

In terms of personal accolades, Mooney was tabbed the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2010, while also being selected as a finalist for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award that year as well. He has been featured in many national publications, including the New York Times, USA Today and Sports Illustrated, while also doing segments on ESPN.

In 2010, he won the Voice of the University Award, given to a faculty or staff member for being a voice that represents the University of Richmond in a positive manner to the wider community. That same, Richmond Style Weekly tabbed him for the 40 Under 40 list, spotlighting UR’s community involvement with the homeless, Special Olympics, Arthritis Foundation, Friends of Jaclyn Foundation and the ASK Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research.

Mooney has coached 11 Atlantic 10 All-Conference honorees and seen one player, Justin Harper, drafted to the NBA in the 2011 NBA Draft. 15 former players have gone on to play professionally overseas, with a graduating senior signing a pro contract in all but one year of Mooney’s tenure.

The 2014-15 season was a return to form for the Spiders as Mooney’s squad put together a record of 21-14, including 12-6 in the Atlantic 10 to place fourth. Richmond finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak, and was one of the “Last Four Out” of the NCAA Tournament at-large field, thereby securing the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage in the NIT. Richmond raced to the NIT Quarterfinals with a win over St. Francis (BK) and Arizona State before falling by just two points to Miami.

Senior Kendall Anthony wrapped up an incredible career that saw him break the school’s all-time three-pointers record and earn All-Atlantic 10 First Team, NABC All-District First Team and VaSID All-State First Team in 2015.

2009-10 and 2010-11 went down as two of the top seasons in Mooney’s coaching career and in recent Spider basketball history. Richmond finished third in the A-10 regular season standings in both seasons, and reached the conference tournament title game twice, winning it in 2010-11.

In the spring of 2010, Richmond earned its first NCAA at-large bid since 2004, garnering a seven seed before being upset in the first round of the tournament. Mooney was named the 2010 Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the 2010 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award.

That season, the Spiders finished the season ranked no. 24 in the final top-25 rankings, tallying a 26-9 overall record. The Spiders defeated three ranked teams and piled up non-conference wins over Mississippi State, Missouri and No. 13 Florida.

In 2010-11, Richmond brought the pieces back and finished what they started, defeating Dayton in the A-10 championship game to earn Mooney’s first conference championship, the first and only league title since Richmond joined the Atlantic 10 in 2001.

Richmond advanced to the second Sweet 16 in program history by downing Vanderbilt and Morehead State in the NCAA Denver Subregional. The Spiders’ run came to an end at the hands of top-seeded Kansas in San Antonio. Richmond set a school record with a 29-8 record, finishing no. 21 in the coaches poll.

During those years, the Spiders were led by Kevin Anderson, a 2010 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. He was a two-time All-Conference First Teamer and was named the 2011 A-10 Tournament MVP. He also earned a spot on the 2009 All-Conference Second Team and was named the 2008 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.

Anderson had plenty of help to lead Richmond to national prominence. Justin Harper (2007-11) was a Lute Olson All-American and NABC First Team All-District selection in 2011, while also earning All-Atlantic 10 First Team honors. Harper finished with 1,457 career points and 113 career blocks, ranking 11th and eighth, respectively. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft, and saw action for the Orlando Magic before making a career in Europe.

Mooney was hired at the University of Richmond at the end of the 2005 season. He had previously coached at Air Force for five seasons, three as an assistant, one as an associate head coach and his final season as head coach. It was his first head coaching job, and in 2004-05, Mooney led the Falcons to an 18-12 record and votes in the national polls.

Mooney’s first college coaching experience came at Division III Beaver College, now known as Arcadia University. He spent three seasons there from 1997-2000. He began coaching at the high school level, taking a job at Lansdale High School in Lansdale, Pa., in 1994.

A native of Philadelphia, Mooney played collegiately at Princeton (1990-94) under Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril. Mooney twice earned the B.F. Bunn Trophy, given annually to the varsity basketball student-athlete who, through sportsmanship, play and influence, contributed most to the sport at the school.

He finished second for Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman, honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore, First-Team All-Ivy League as a junior and Second-Team All-Ivy his final season.

A 1994 graduate with a B.A. in English, Mooney led Princeton to the NCAA Tournament twice following a pair of conference titles. The four-year letterwinner amassed 1,071 points, which ranks 20th on Princeton’s all-time scoring list, and started all 107 games in his career. He currently ranks seventh on Princeton’s career list with 142 career three-pointers and is one of five Princeton student-athletes to score 1,000 points, grab 350 rebounds and dish 200 assists.

Mooney is married to the former Lia Chomat, a Princeton graduate who also has a doctorate in psychology from Penn. The couple has two sons, Danny and Ryan.

Scouting FordhamFordham picked up its first A-10 win on Wednesday, defeating La Salle 66-61 to extend the Rams’ home winning streak to 10 games, its longest home win streak since 1991.

The Rams have been reenergized under first-year coach Jeff Neubauer. They lead the league in scoring defense, scoring margin, three-point field shooting, three-point defense, assists per game and most turnovers forced.

Ryan Rhoomes is shooting a league-best 67.9 percent from the field with 8.5 rebounds per game. Joseph Chartouny is first in the conference with 5.2 assists per game, while Mandell Thomas leads the team with 15.0 points per game.

Series vs. FordhamRichmond has won nine straight games in the series with Fordham with a number of nailbiters. ShawnDre’ Jones hit several threes in the final minute of last year’s win, while Kendall Anthony’s three in 2014 helped the Spiders to a win in OT in Rose Hill. UR leads the all-time series 14-7.

All-American CandidateTerry Allen has received praise from the national basketball media with writeups from ESPN, CBS, American Sports Network, Cox Sports and others on his stellar play to start the season.

Allen ranks 31st in the country with 19.9 points per game and is fifth in the conference with 8.0 rebounds per game. Allen also ranks 46th in the country in steals per game with 2.0.

He has the most steals of any player in NCAA D-1 listed at 6-8 or taller.

He has tallied seven 20-point games and four double-doubles this season.

Dating back to last year, he has put together 24 straight double-digit scoring games and has 10 double-doubles in his last 24 games played. His active double-digit scoring streak is the longest in the Atlantic 10, and tied for 10th in the country.

Man Among BoysTerry Allen was one of the best players on the court in the Las Vegas Invitational which featured Cal, West Virginia and San Diego State. Allen scored 54 points and had 19 rebounds in two games against nationally ranked teams. His 34 points and 13 rebounds against Cal set new career highs. Allen also hit 17 free throws against Cal, the most by any Richmond player dating back to 1969.

He was named to the LVI All-Tournament team for his efforts. That Monday, Allen was tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, his first career A-10 weekly honor.

Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get EnoughRichmond has averaged 77.9 points per game this season, ranking fourth in the A-10 and 91st in the country in scoring offense.

The most points scored in one season under Coach Mooney was 70.0 in 2012-13. Richmond’s scoring record for one season is 84.8 points back in 1965-66.

Resume BuildingRichmond finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 8-4 record and quality wins over Wake Forest, then-no. 14 California and Northern Iowa. Two of those wins came away from the Robins Center.

2015-16 SPIDER MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

2015-16 SPIDER MEN’S BASKETBALL | RICHMONDSPIDERS.COM | @RICHMONDBBALL | #ONERICHMOND

Nerdy NumbersThe Spiders have posted some impressive numbers in Ken Pomeroy’s advanced statistics. UR’s offensive efficiency of 112.5 ranks 28th in the country, while the team’s effective FG percentage of 55.9 is 19th in the NCAA. The Spiders have dished an assist on 59.3 percent of made shots, ranking 49th.

Richmond has only been blocked in just 6.2 percent of possessions, ranking 21st in the country in that category. Despite playing some of the national leaders in defense in West Virginia and ODU, Richmond still boasts a turnover percentage of 16.2, which ranks 48th in the country.

From Sixth Man To Lead ManLast year’s Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, ShawnDre’ Jones, has stepped up big as UR’s next All-Conference-type point guard.

Following in the small but mighty shoes of Kevin Anderson, Cedrick Lindsay and Kendall Anthony, Jones moves Richmond’s offense with his speed, leadership and basketball savvy.

He is averaging 13.9 points per game with a 43.4 three-point percentage and a team-best 80.4 percent mark from the free throw line. Jones also ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5.

He averaged 19.0 with nine threes in back-to-back games against Texas Tech and Saint Joseph’s.

T.J., Point-ForwardT.J. Cline has a unique role on the floor for the Spiders. While he technically plays the five position on the floor, Cline acts like a point guard on offense much of the time. He handles the ball at the top of the key in traffic, distributing the ball and leading the team in assists. He is also a dangerous threat to shoot the three if a defense sags on him.

However, T.J. provides an excellent alternate option to Terry Allen’s post game as Cline also possesses several patented scoring moves from the block with his back to the basket.

Hit The KhwanRedshirt-freshman Khwan Fore has shown flashes of athletic brilliance this season with acrobatic dunks and incredible speed off the dribble.

He has put those performances together recently with three consecutive double-digit games each besting his previous career high. He scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting against Saint Joseph’s.

Marshall, Marshall, MarshallRedshirt-junior Marshall Wood has made an immediate impact after transferring from Virginia Tech before last season. He is averaging 9.0 points and 22.4 minutes per game as the first Spider off the bench.

Wood is a threat from long range with the second-most threes on the team as he is shooting 24-of-65 (.369) from long range.

Record WatchTerry Allen reached the 1,000-point plateau with his 25 points against Bethune-Cookman. He became the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at UR, and eighth player to reach it under Coach Mooney. With 1,218 career points, he’s now 28th all-time and three points behind Eric Poole.

Coach Chris Mooney is just five wins away from 200 victories at the University ofRichmond. He is currently third all-time in wins at the school, just two behind Malcolm U. Pitt for second all-time.

Pass...Pass...Pass...SCORERichmond’s frontcourt is asked to handle the ball a lot away from the basket and the Spiders usually have five players touch the ball on any one possession. Quick ball movement and sharp passes lead to open shots and fluid offense. The Spiders rank 49th in the country with an assist percentage of 59.3.

Richmond made 29 assists against Stetson, just two away from the school record. UR has already had four games with 20 or more assists.

As a team, Richmond sports a 1.46 assist-to-

ShawnDre’ Jones (47) and T.J. Cline (52) are the team leaders in assists. Jones’ assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10.

From DOWNTOWNOne of Richmond’s great strengths as an offense is the great array of strong three-point shooters. UR ranks second in the A-10 with a 38.0 percentage rate from long range. The Spiders hit 15 treys against Stetson, just one away from the Robins Center record.

Take Me Home TonightRichmond is 86-20 at home over the last seven seasons, winning six of the last seven home games vs. ranked teams, including a double

OT win over No. 22 VCU on 2/25.

Richmond’s 16 home wins in 2014-15 is tops for the most wins in any single season at the Robins Center.

Best In The A-10Over the last nine seasons, Richmond has won 80 conference games, more than any other Atlantic 10 school. Richmond is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer a losing season in any of the last eight years.

Over that same span, the Spiders have won 13 games against ranked teams, beating out every other Atlantic 10 team for ranked wins. Coach Mooney’s 13 Top-25 wins rank higher than any other coach in Richmond history.

With Richmond’s wins at Wake Forest and vs. Cal, the Spiders have won 18 games against power-conference programs in the last decade.

Whiz KidsRichmond’s basketball staff has not only been effective in winning big games, but continue to chart a unique course for running a program in this era of college basketball. The coaching and support staff have degrees from some of the top liberal arts schools in the country.

Richmond has received coverage for its approach to strength training, employing the omegawave and digital questionnaires to track body readiness and performance before and after each workout.

The Spider staff is also using advanced statistical analysis from video coordinator Calvin Hunt to self-scout in new ways, including foul percentage and foul scenarios and lineup efficiencies.

Richmond offensive and defensive systems take unique approaches to the motion offense and matchup zone defense that can best be described as the “Mooney system.”

Rich Athletic LineageRichmond’s basketball roster is filled with the sons of standout athletes who passed down their athletic prowess.

Most notably, T.J. Cline is the son of Sacramento Kings assistant coach and Hall of Fame women’s basketball player Nancy

Lieberman. T.J.’s father, Tim Cline, also played ball with the Washington Generals.Senior Terry Allen’s mom was an All-American basketball player at San Diego State. Classmate Trey Davis’ father, John, is in the Richmond Hall of Fame after playing for the Spiders in the 1980’s.

ShawnDre’ Jones’ father played basketball at Virginia State, while Marshall Wood’s uncle played football at JMU. Khwan Fore’s mother ran track at Emporia State and Paul Friendshuh’s mother played volleyball at UW-Eau Claire.

Even in Richmond’s incoming freshman class for next year, Nick Sherod’s father played basketball at ODU and his grandfather at VCU before playing for the New York Knicks. Golden’s father played at Fairfield University and he had two grandfathers that played collegiate football. Buckingham’s father played at Jefferson-Huguenot-Wythe High School.

UR Announces 2016 Signing ClassIn November, Richmond basketball welcomed National Letters of Intent from three tremendous recruits in G De’Monte Buckingham (6-4, 185), G Nick Sherod (6-4, 185) and C Grant Golden (6-9, 210). With all considered three-star recruits by different outlets, the class currently ranks 67th in the nation, according to CBS Sports.

Natives of Richmond, Va., Buckingham and Sherod have the local community excited about homegrown talent flourishing at the University of Richmond.

Buckingham is competing in his senior year at Henrico High School, where he is the reigning All-Metro Player of the Year in 2014-15, averaging 21.5 points and 9.6 rebounds after helping the Warriors to the 5A state championship. Buckingham has played both the guard and small forward positions in high school. He played through a knee injury for most of his junior year and then had reparative surgery in the offseason.

Sherod attends nearby St. Christopher’s School, where he made 78-of-185 three-point attempts (42 percent) as a junior. He earned a spot on the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association All-State First Team. He was also First Team All-Metro, averaging 25 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals as a junior.

Buckingham played AAU ball for Team Takeover, while Sherod played for Team Loaded. Sherod helped Team Loaded win the adidas Uprising Summer Championship in Las Vegas.

Golden comes to UR as a native of Winchester, Va., but is playing his senior season at St. James School in Hagerstown, Md. He only played three games at St. James last year after breaking his foot. He spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Sherando HS in Virginia.

Standing at 6-9, Golden will be a force in the Spiders frontcourt in upcoming seasons. He can step out to shoot long-range, as well as score and rebound in the interior.

Tarrant CourtRichmond will be playing on a newly named court in 2015-16, after Dick Tarrant Court was unveiled on opening night. Tarrant’s Spider teams posted a record of 239-126 (.655) during 12 seasons from 1981-1993, including an impressive 127-36 (.779) mark on the Robins Center court. Tarrant led the Spiders to eight 20-win seasons, four Colonial Athletic Association championships, five NCAA Tournament appearances and four trips to the National Invitational Tournament.

Richmond is the first of the 14 NCAA Division I schools in Virginia to name its basketball court for a head coach.

Pro SpidersThe Spiders have a long history of turning basketball players into successful professionals. On the court, Richmond has had at least 38 players play in the NBA or overseas, including 2011 graduate Justin Harper on the Brooklyn Nets this preseason. Harper is now playing for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA D-League.

During Coach Mooney’s tenure, a graduating player from all but one season has gone on to play professional basketball, for a total of 15 former players with pro teams since 2006.

The Spiders have also produced a number of front-office pros in the NBA. Currently seven former players have NBA positions from Vice President to referee to assistant coach.

Seven former players are also currently coaching basketball in the NCAA ranks.

In The CommunityOver the last several years, Richmond hoops has partnered with the ASK Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research in downtown Richmond.

The organization works to provide a fun and

supportive community for children with cancer and for young family members of children with cancer.

In the summer, Spider basketball players travel to the community center to play games with the kids and listen to their stories.

Head coach Chris Mooney is also actively involved with Max’s Positive Vibe Cafe, a local charity that helps individuals with learning deficiencies get important job training skills. Mooney has been the face of the organization’s annual Coaches Cookoff which he has won all three years. He also works as a celebrity bartender at Max’s.

Going AbroadIn the summer of 2016, the Spider men’s basketball team will fly to Europe as part of a regularly scheduled European tour that Richmond basketball takes every four years.

While many men’s basketball programs around the country are afforded the opportunity to travel abroad, the University of Richmond encourages all of its students, especially student-athletes, to go abroad.

In the last four years, the field hockey, baseball, women’s basketball and men’s golf teams have all traveled abroad. Numerous student-athletes from track and cross country, swimming, men’s and women’s lacrosse, women’s golf, women’s soccer and football have all traveled in UR-sponsored trips and on their own.

Over half of the whole student body utilitizes Richmond’s study abroad programs, and the Weinstein International School is a vibrant force on campus.

SERIES VS. FORDHAMLAST MEETING BOX SCORE

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore ShawnDre’ Jones scored 18 second-half points, including five threes, to lead Richmond past Fordham, 73-71.

The Spiders (13-11, 6-5) made up for a slow shooting start by turning over the Rams (6-16, 1-10) in all corners of the court.

Richmond forced 17 turnovers while only committing six themselves. Richmond won the points off turnover battle, 25-8, and scored 12 fastbreak points. UR continues to rank in the top 10 in the country for fewest turnovers.

The two Spider guards carried much of the scoring load as Richmond played its first game without Alonzo Nelson-Ododa who was injured on Sunday against Rhode Island. Kendall Anthony finished with 19 points, while Jones scored 18 points.

Terry Allen upped his double-digit scoring streak to eight games with a 17-point, six-rebound effort. Josh Jones had a career-high nine rebounds off the bench and T.J. Cline finished with nine points.

Playing without Ododa’s interior presence, the Spiders attacked the offensive glass and grabbed 15 offensive boards for 13 second-chance points. Fordham entered the game as one of the A-10’s best offensive rebounding squads and UR edged the Rams 15-13 in that category.

Fordham’s Eric Paschall scored a game-high 24 points, while Mandell Thomas finished with 17 points. Chris Sengfelder had a double-double with

12 points and 10 boards.

Jones’ long-distance scoring came in some crucial stretches in the second half as Richmond overcame a nine-point deficit with 12:20 to play.

Although Richmond only trailed by one at the break, Fordham scored 21 points in the first eight minutes to build a 50-41 lead. A Cline three-point play and ShawnDre’ Jones three cut into the lead and then Josh Jones had a putback and Deion Taylor threw down a big dunk for a 10-2 UR run.

But the Rams quickly responded to go back up eight after a Bryan Smith three-pointer with 6:11 left.

Jones hit another three and Taylor stole the ball in the backcourt to find ShawnDre’ wide open again for a trey that brought down the house and got the margin back to 59-57. A fastbreak layup and then free throws from Cline tied the game twice, and ShawnDre’ Jones’ three with 1:52 left gave Richmond its first lead of the second half, 66-63.

Fordham’s Thomas hit a jumper to make it a one-point game, but Jones hit his fifth trey with 31 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.

Fordham’s Paschall was able to convert his own three and the Spiders were able to hit enough free throws to stay ahead of the Rams for the remainder. Fordham tried to intentionally miss a free throw with two seconds left, but Thomas’ jumper was wide at the buzzer.
