There's little doubt Basha has the tools to be the 2016Division I state champions. They won 17 of 18 power-rankinggames and survived much of the final month without twogood pitchers. They've shown some moxie adjusting arms. But seven other teams are eager to test the Bears to see ifthey are invincible.

The race is on beginning Thursday (May 5) as the EliteEight are set. Perry, Sandra Day O'Connor, Mountain Ridge,Hamilton, Campo Verde, Mountain Pointe and Chaparral areat the table as well. Here's a look at the teams vying for aspot in the May 17 title game at Tempe Diablo Stadium:

#1 Basha (24-4): What's not to like. Capable pitching thatbegan with Johnny Morell and Casey Legumina and JackSchneider. It's shifted with more reliance on MichaelPerzan and Kyle Wullenweber the past few weeks.Schneider (8-2, 1.73 ERA) has been a rock, Perzan (3-0, 1-37) effective in any role and Wullenweber (1-0, 3.65) pickingup the slack. Legumina may be cleared to pitch Thursday, but Morell is done for the year with a lat injury. Defense upthe middle -- catcher Michael Goodrich, shortstop SkylarDorn and second baseman Tyler Riddle (10 errors betweenthem) plus centerfielder Ryan Tierney have been terrific. Tophitters are sophomore Gage Workman (.437, 3 HR) and sen-iors Legumina (.459, 5 HR) and Tierney (.397). First-roundopponent: Mountain Pointe.

#2 Perry: (23-8): The Pumas had their ace Tayt Smithtoss a beauty to reach the elite eight. Smith pitched a one-hitter in beating Centennial, 11-1, and only had to go fiveinnings. Coach Damien Tippett, who took over as headcoach prior to practice starting, has put seen a nice startto his career. The offense is keyed by the top half of the line-up with Tommy Sacco, Wacy Crenshaw, Trevor Hauver lead-ing the way. The Pumas will need solid mound work from thelikes of Beau Brieske, Dustin Schorie and Logan DeMato tocomplement Smith to make a deep run. First-round oppo-nent: Campo Verde.

#4 Sandra Day O'Connor (27-5): The Eagles had anabbreviated run at state last year. They are definitely in themix now. Starting pitchers Ryan Alexander, Colby Wyatt andKeegan McCarville have been outstanding -- Alexander (9-0,0.92 ERA), Wyatt (7-2, 2.04) and McCarville (5-2, 2-08). Toss in four players with .400 averages or better --sophomore Nolan Gorman ( .500, 9 HR, 42 RBI), BailinMarkridge (.442), Cade Biddle (.425) and Tanner Baker(.408) and  there is plenty to win with. First-round oppo-nent: Mountain Ridge.

#5 Mountain Ridge (23-5): The Lions made noise win-ning a national-caliber tournament last month and haven't

Can Basha Bag Division I Championship?Top-Seeded Bears Gutting It Out With Lefties

been silent in state. Battling injuries to position players, deeppitching has eased the stress. Tommy Lowe (7-1, 2.18 ERA),Alex Roth (5-0, 2.41), Chase Sandman (5-1), Nolan Ruff (3-1, 2.21) and reliever Matthew Liberatore (0.64) have madethe Lions a contender. Offensively Trent Turner (.455) andTristan Thomas (.369) are RBI leaders. Catcher MatthewDyer is hitting .447, but his defense stands out in control-ling the opposition's running game.

#6 Hamilton (23-6): The Huskies appeared to be a run-away favorite early, winning their first 12 games. They are11-6 since and have had to scratch and claw for wins morethan they are used to. That happened in the second round 4-2 win over Queen Creek. The mainstay has been ZaneStrand (9-2, 1.31), who locked down the complete-game winover the Bulldogs. Cole Bellinger (5-1, 1.71), Ryan Turner (3-0, 2.65), Logan Boyer (2-0, 3.23 and closer Drew Swift (2.56,5 saves). Offense revolves around first baseman NickBrueser (.459, 9 HR), Brayden Merritt (.444, 21 RBI), DrewSwift (.400) and Bellinger (.375, 28 RBI). First-round oppo-nent: Chaparral.

#7 Campo Verde: (19-9): The Coyotes haven't torn thecover off the ball, but if the pitching hangs in they can be afactor. Cooper Williams is the ace, sporting a 7-3 record. Hewasn't at his best in Tuesday's second round win overHorizon (five walks and three hits in four innings), but effec-tive enough to give up only and unearned run in thatstint. Junior Hayden Udall (3-1) has been effective as areliever and backing up Williams as a starter is MikeAdkinson (4-1). Williams is Campo's top hitter (.525, 5 HR,22 RBI) and catcher Isaiah Garcia (.429) has 4 HR and 31RBI to lead the team.

#8 Mountain Pointe (15-11): The Pride have a chance togive coach Brandon Buck a going-away present, but it won'tbe easy with Basha first up. The teams played recently (April25) with Basha prevailing, 9-4. Mountain Pointe has relied onpitchers Gene Ito, Alex Bookman, Brock Bell and GarrettRedaja down the stretch. Ito has been the most effective oflate. The Pride has played well the final two weeks, winningfour of its last five games, including a win over Hamilton.

#14 Chaparral (23-8): The Firebirds have endured a pairof harrowing games to reach the final eight. They rallied inthe seventh to tie Sunnyslope and won in the eighth in thefirst round. On Tuesday they needed an 8-run rally in the fifthand bailing wire to hold on to upend Corona, 12-11.Chaparral starters in postseason have been Casey Candiottiand Alex Segal. Blake Flint, eligible to play the last threeweeks, has made relief appearances in both games and haspitched well sporting a 1.17 ERA in less than 10 inningswork overall. The Firebirds rely most on hitting. Top threatsare Dylan Cole (.449), Jacob Gonzalez (.430, 7 HR, 42 RBI),Gianni Tomasi (.359, 27 RBI) and Harrison Jones (.352, 6HR, 32 RBI).

Tucson and Canyon del Oro are the only teams from lastyear’s final eight to make a repeat performance. TheDorados defeated Tucson 3-1 to claim the Division II cham-pionship last year but there are six new teams in the roundof eight, hoping to claim those two final spots. The playoffs for D-II are now in the double-elimination

phase which always makes for an interesting dynamic butthree of the last four champions have come out of the win-ner’s bracket, including the last two. Here are the matchups scheduled for Wednesday, May 4:No. 9 Tucson vs. No. 1 Thunderbird at Tempe Diablo

innings to make it out of the first round and then No. 8Verrado on Tuesday to make it to the final eight. Diablo Stadium (4 p.m.)Paradise Valley (24-8) is making their first playoff appear-

ance since 2008 and the team advanced after beating No.13 Kellis 8-4. Head coach Shae Clark gave three reasons forhis team’s success and that list includes Camaraderie, ener-gy and winning close games. “Jeremy Griffith has emerged as one of the top hitters in

our division this year,” Clark wrote about his leaders. “He ishitting over .400, with four home runs, and a 1.285 OPS. Hesolidified his spot as the starting catcher this year afterbouncing around the infield the last two years.” Wake Forest commit Rhyse Dee (5-1) is the ace on the

squad.Greenway (19-9) beat No. 12 Bradshaw Mountain 4-2 in

the second round. Senior Kona Quiggle (.427) has 25 RBIwith eight doubles, five triples and four home runs while sen-ior pitcher Jared Kenyon (6-1) and senior Bryce Mackey (6-3) are the leaders on the mound. The Demons have 54stolen bases.Greenway won the state championship two years ago and
