Ash Wednesday Fasting and Abstinence March 6 is Ash Wednesday and is a day of fasting and abstinence from eating meat. Fasting consists of one full meal and is required of all between the ages of 18 and 59.

Days of Abstinence: All Fridays in Lent All who have reached their 14th year of age are bound to abstain totally from meat. The American Bishops recommend that abstinence from meat be observed by all Catholics as a sign of unity with each other during Lent. Many still observe abstinence on all Fridays of the year. This act of Penance is not obligatory as it is during Lent. If a person cannot observe this discipline then another personal act of penance should be performed in Lent.
