Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy

Competitive sports at Bucknell dates back to 1870, and more than a century later Bucknell has established itself as a national leader in providing successful academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. Today, the Department of Athletics & Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence among all intercollegiate programs by maintaining academic priorities and supporting educational and personal development, all while providing the rigorous and competitive Division I athletics opportunity sought by Bucknell student-athletes.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experi-ence is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.

This is the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM• In the summer of 2011 the Bucknell Department of Athletics & Recreation implemented a formal leadership development program.• Initial workshops were facilitated by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center.• As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, the program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields.• Initially, a group of 60 student-athletes were identified as members. These workshops for both student-athletes and their coaches have set the stage for ongoing programming that will encompass the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy.

GOALS FOR THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY• Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years• Help young best athletes become best leaders• Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders• Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders• Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders• Practice leading self, their class, and below• Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders• Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders• Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff• Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader• Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership• Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support• Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014.

• All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 312 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 se-mester.

• In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

• Bucknell has earned 101 Patriot League championships in 25 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 129 conference players of the year, 110 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 605 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2015.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 25-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 18 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 126.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports med-icine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Buck-nell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

• Concluded the 2014-15 season ranked 24th nationally in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll. Bucknell climbed into the national rankings for the first time in program history in December and was listed as high as 22nd.

• Won a school-record 15 dual matches in 2014-15, surpassing the previous record of 12 established by the 2006-07 and 2009-10 squads.

• Most wins (25) in a two-year span in program history in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

A few years ago when Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger talked about the Bison, he struggled to find names to mention after the starter at each weight class. That is no longer the case.

Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, Bucknell has regular starters returning at nine of the 10 weight classes and has quality depth in reserve pushing each starter for his spot in the lineup.

“We have more depth than we have ever had since our program returned,” commented Wirnsberger, the 2015 EIWA Coach of the Year. “This is our largest roster since I have been here, which makes these guys compete harder in the practice room. We are pleased to have this kind of roster and this kind of quality depth.”

Bucknell last year won a school-record 15 dual matches, was ranked in the top 25 for nine weeks, posted a 10-match winning streak, placed a program-best third in the team standings at the EIWA Championships and had four NCAA qualifiers. The Bison are poised for a year that Wirnsberger hopes will exceed those impressive accomplishments.

“We set short-term goals as far as what we want to accomplish on a daily and weekly basis early in the year,” explained Wirnsberger, who ranks second on Bucknell’s all-time wins list with 86 victories. “We want to get better both individually and as a team. It is a marathon and not a sprint. These guys have set an expectation for themselves. They understand we want to compete for another EIWA trophy. They want to have their best performances at the end of the year.”

Wirnsberger credits much of last year’s success to the talented grapplers the Bison had at the beginning and end of their lineup. NCAA qualifiers Paul Petrov (125) and Joe Stolfi (285) held down those positions and combined for a 64-15 record, including 35-3 in duals.

“We have one of the strongest pair of bookends in the country,” com-mented Wirnsberger, who is in his 10th season on the Bucknell sideline. “Not only are they returning on the mat for us, but they are seniors with a wealth of experience, so the expectation is for them to compete for a national title. Now the weight classes through the middle of the lineup have more experience than in the past, which should put us in the mix in a lot of matches. Our success will be determined by staying healthy, but the good news is we have more depth than we have ever had.”

The Bucknell program is also moving forward on the facilities front. This year, the Bison are scheduled for a team-record four dual matches in Sojka Pavilion, a beautiful 4,000-seat arena that opened in 2003 and also serves as Bucknell’s basketball facility.

Bucknell’s coaching staff and wrestlers are also keeping an eye on the construction progress of the Graham Building, adjacent to Sojka Pavilion. The Graham Wrestling Center will sit on the second floor of the Graham Building and include new locker rooms, practice areas and additional student-centered spaces, including for academic support and athletic training. The facility is expected to open just prior to the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

“The Graham Building is huge for our program,” said an excited Wirns-berger. “It allows us to take that next step on the national stage and within the EIWA. It is going to allow us look at a different type of student-athlete that might not have considered Bucknell before. It shows the commitment to our wrestling program. It is going to be one of the nicest wrestling facili-ties in the entire country.”

Bucknell in 2015-16 returns 17 letterwinners from last year’s squad

that posted a 15-4, 8-1 EIWA record. In a unique twist on leadership, Wirnsberger has named the entire junior and senior classes as captains. There are 10 newcomers on the roster. Below is a closer look at the team by weight class.

125 - Projected Starter: Paul PetrovThree-year starter and two-time NCAA qualifier Paul Petrov will remain

Bucknell’s starter at 125 pounds this year. The Cedar Lake, Indiana, native has piled up a 78-30 career record, including a 20-5 mark in EIWA dual matches. Petrov is a three-time EIWA Championships placewinner, finishing a career-best third at last year’s conference championships.

“With Paul’s wealth of experience and his previous visits to the NCAA Championships, he has a goal to compete to be a national champion this year,” said Wirnsberger about the two-time NWCA All-Academic Team member. “Paul targeted a couple areas his wrestling needed to get better and made some big gains over the summer.”

In the past, Bucknell has not had much depth at 125 pounds, but that is different this year with three potential options behind the Petrov. Rookies Ben Bliss, Mike Macklin and Frank Satriale give the Bison much-needed depth alongside Petrov and they will help push him in the practice room.

133 - Projected Starter: Grim GonzalezReturning starter junior Grim Gonzalez and sophomore Zach Valley will

compete for the starting position at 133 pounds. Gonzalez has been the starter each of the last two years, but Valley put together a solid rookie campaign last season despite battling some injuries.

Gonzalez is coming off a strong sophomore season that saw him post a 23-11 record and finish in fifth place at the EIWA Championships. The Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, native did not lose two bouts in a row after Jan. 1 and was 19-5 in his last 24 matches.

“Grim has extreme talent and experience,” noted Wirnsberger. “He really came on at the end of the year. Being an EIWA placewinner as a sophomore says a lot about his talent and his ability and what we expect from him these next two years. His potential is through the roof.”

Valley was 8-7 a year ago wrestling mostly in tournaments. “Zach has a lot of talent,” praised Wirnsberger. “He had a lot of success

in high school and made the transition last year. He learned a lot and he will be ready to compete with Grim.”

141 - Projected Starter: Tyler SmithOne of two Bison freshman NCAA qualifiers last year, Tyler Smith returns

to the starting position at 141 pounds. He finished in third place at the EIWA Championships and was 24-8 overall, including two wins over ranked foes.

“Tyler is a phenomenal talent and expectations are for him to compete to be an NCAA champion,” noted Wirnsberger. “He needs to continue to develop and stay healthy and he can wrestle with anyone in the country.”

Freshman Kyle Greene will provide a strong backup for the Bison.

Season Outlook

“We are looking for Kyle to develop because you never know when it will be your opportunity,” noted Wirnsberger. “He brings a good work ethic and a positive mentality.”

149 - Projected Starter: Victor LopezTwo-year starter and two-time EIWA placewinner Victor Lopez returns

for his junior year at 149 pounds. He was third on the team in victories last season with a 27-11 mark and was the only Bison to go undefeated (9-0) in EIWA duals.

“Victor is another guy with a lot of experience, potential and talent,” praised Wirnsberger. “He had a great freshman campaign, but tailed off at the end of the year. Last year was the opposite and he came on and excelled at the end of the season. His goals are to compete to be an EIWA champion, NCAA All-American and NCAA champion.”

Behind Lopez is sophomore Collin Boylan, who is moving up a weight class after posting an 8-14 mark at 141 last year. Additionally, freshman Christian Bassolino will add depth.

“Collin was a spot starter for us last year,” said Wirnsberger. “He is a competitor, works hard and has put on the right type of size to be a good option for us at 149.”

157 - Projected Starter: Logan Kerin or Zach KellyThe 157-pound weight class will see a new starter as incumbent Rustin

Barrick has moved up to 174. Competing for the newly opened spot are junior Logan Kerin and freshman Zach Kelly.

Kerin owns a 20-32 career record, including 15-15 a year ago. “Logan is a young man who is not afraid of hard work,” explained Wirns-

berger. “He is self motivated and will do whatever it takes to be successful.”Wirnsberger thinks Kelly, a Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, native, has the

chance to make an impact on the national scene. Another freshman in the mix at 157 is Brian Lapham, while junior Joey

Krulock, who has wrestled at 174 his first two years, could be in the mix at 157 or 165 if he can stay healthy.

165 - Projected Starter: Robert SchlittSenior Robert Schlitt has put together a solid career with back-to-back

16-win campaigns and three EIWA Championships appearances. He is expected to be back as the starter at 165 pounds after going 9-9 in duals a season ago.

“Bobby Schlitt is one of the hardest workers on our team,” praised Wirnsberger. “He is very committed to our program and will bring maxi-mum effort every match.”

The 165-pound weight class may be Bucknell’s deepest weight with senior Brenan McAllister, sophomore Chad Reese and Krulock in the mix, along with freshman D.J. Hollingshead.

“D.J. is another freshman that has significant upside and has potential to be an impact athlete,” said Wirnsberger.

174 - Projected Starter: Rustin BarrickAfter moving down a weight class between his sophomore and junior

seasons, Barrick has jumped two weight classes to 174 pounds. The senior was 15-13 a year ago wrestling at 157 and has 33 victories in his career.

“Rustin has fought through a lot of injuries his entire career, but he is a gritty, hard-nosed, competitive guy in our program,” noted Wirnsberger. “He has the strength, determination and ability to be successful at 174 pounds. He had a tremendous offseason.”

Freshman Nick Stephani will challenge Barrick, while junior Austin Wetterau and sophomore Connor Wagh will also be in the mix. The key for them will be to remain healthy throughout the season after being slowed due to injuries in the past.

184 - Projected Starter: Tom SleighTom Sleigh joins 141-pounder Tyler Smith as members of the Bison

sophomore class who are returning NCAA qualifiers. Sleigh wrestled a team-high 48 matches last year and posted a 30-18 mark on his way to a third-place finish at the EIWA Championships.

“Our guy at 184 is Tom Sleigh,” remarked Wirnsberger. “His goal is to be an NCAA champion. It is a competitive weight class within the EIWA,

but he has shown he can compete with some of the best wrestlers in the country. The experience he gained last year, combined with the offseason he had puts him in good position to reach his goals.

Wirnsberger expects freshman Cale Shelton to be a viable backup option behind Sleigh.

197 - Projected Starter: Tyler GreeneAfter two years in a reserve role, junior Tyler Greene is poised to break

into the starting lineup for the first time. He is 20-22 in his career, including a solid 11-10 last year mostly in tournament competition.

“Tyler is very talented,” raved Wirnsberger. “He is going to open a lot of eyes to the entire country this year. His talent and potential can put him at the national tournament, and potentially on the podium. He has a calmness about him and never gets rattled.”

Junior Rory Bonner, who has been a member of the starting lineup for parts of the last two seasons, will compete with Greene for the starting spot. Bonner split time last year between 174 and 184 and posted a 6-18 mark.

“Rory is a coachable young man who understands the importance of sacrificing for the team,” noted Wirnsberger.

285 - Projected Starter: Joe StolfiThree-time NCAA qualifier Joe Stolfi injured his shoulder at last year’s

NCAA Championships and is still recovering from offseason surgery. He will likely return to the Bison lineup in December to reclaim his starting spot.

Stolfi ranks seventh in program history with 99 career wins and he holds the school record with 52 career pins, including a national high 20 last year. Stolfi is 70-11 in his career in bonus-point matches and became Bucknell’s third EIWA champion when he claimed the 285-pound crown in 2014.

“Joe’s goal is to get healthy and compete to be an NCAA champion as well as bring home another EIWA title,” said Wirnsberger.

Until Stolfi returns to the lineup, fellow senior Chuck Boddy will get his chance in the lineup. The Abington, Pennsylvania, native has wrestled in 30 career bouts, all in tournaments.

“Chuck has a great attitude and is going to surprise some people,” predicted Wirnsberger. “He has the potential and ability to do some good things. He has developed significantly and we expect him to perform at a high level.”

Dan Wirnsberger, who officially became the 15th coach of the Bucknell wrestling program on May 10, 2005, enters his 11th year at the helm of the Orange and Blue in 2015-16.

Hired to guide Bucknell’s program back into the national spotlight after a four-year hiatus where it was not a varsity sport, Wirnsberger has succeeded and currently ranks second on the Bison career wins list with 86. His 100th career victory came in December 2014 at the Grapple at the Garden against Hofstra.

Wirnsberger has had plenty of success as head coach at Bucknell, but last year was one of the team’s best under his direction. The Bison won a school-record 15 dual matches, including 10 in a row at one point, had six EIWA placewinners and four NCAA qualifiers. The squad appeared in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, climbing to as high as 22nd in December. Wirns-berger earned EIWA Coach of the Year honors as he led Bucknell to a third-place finish at the conference championships, the best in school history.

Fourteen different Bison have combined for 27 NCAA Championships berths under Wirnsberger’s guidance, while Andy Rendos and current as-sistant coach Kevin LeValley each became two-time All-Americans. Bucknell has finished at least .500 four times and has recorded at least a .500 record against difficult EIWA competition six times under Wirnsberger.

After spending a transitional year recruiting and laying the groundwork for a successful program, Wirnsberger brought Bucknell back onto the mat in 2006-07 with flying colors.

Under Wirnsberger’s direction, the 2006-07 Bison returned to the mat in grand fashion, setting a then-school record for dual-meet victories by compil-ing a record of 12-9-1, 3-3-1 in the EIWA, including a 17-16 win over nationally ranked Columbia. At the EIWA tournament, he led the Orange and Blue to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools and saw three Bucknell grapplers earn bids to the NCAA Championships.

Facing a tougher schedule in its second season back as a varsity program at Bucknell, Wirnsberger helped the squad to a 9-11-1 mark in 2007-08. The Bison posted a 4-4 record against EIWA competition. Once again, three wres-tlers qualified for the NCAA Championships and Bucknell moved up one spot to eighth place at the competitive EIWA Championships.

The Bison program took a major stride forward in 2008-09 as Wirnsberger guided Bucknell to a tie for third at the EIWA Championships and helped a school-record six wrestlers earn NCAA berths. Additionally, Andy Rendos be-came the first Bison to earn All-America honors in 14 years as he placed fifth at NCAAs in the 165-pound weight class. As a team, Bucknell registered 11 wins, giving it a three-year win total of 32, the best stretch in program history.

More milestones were accomplished in 2009-10 as Wirnsberger saw two of his wrestlers earn All-America honors, marking a first for the program. The Bison also tied a school record with 12 victories and finished with an unbeat-en EIWA mark. Wirnsberger guided the team to its second consecutive top-five finish at the EIWA Championships as it claimed fourth in the team stand-ings. Highlighting the weekend was Rendos’ individual title in the 165-pound bracket, making him the first EIWA champion in program history.

Wirnsberger helped LeValley duplicate Rendos’ feat by winning the 149-pound EIWA title and earn his second consecutive All-America citation in 2010-11. He won the EIWA crown at Sojka Pavilion as Wirnsberger oversaw a program that successfully hosted one of the major conference tournaments in the country.

The 2011-12 Bison were ravaged by injuries as six projected starters missed significant time during the campaign. Still, there were plenty of posi-tives for Wirnsberger and the young Bucknell squad that featured just one senior as Corey Lear and Austin Miller became first-time NCAA participants.

The 2012-13 Bucknell squad again experienced a number of injuries, but Lear and Joe Stolfi still earned berths to the NCAA Championships. The un-seeded Stolfi peaked at the right time of year and came just one victory shy of All-America honors.

Stolfi and Paul Petrov represented the Bison at NCAAs in 2013-14 and a young roster improved significantly as the year progressed, setting the stage for the 2014-15 campaign, which was one of the most successful in program history.

A three-time wrestling All-American at Michigan State University, Wirns-berger previously served as the head coach of Bloomsburg University’s Divi-sion I program from 2002 to 2005. As head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger qualified 10 student-athletes for the NCAA Tournament, including six in 2005, his final season at the helm, and he coached the program’s first-ever Olympic Trials qualifier. He helped four Bloomsburg wrestlers capture Eastern Wres-tling League titles and six win PSAC crowns. Named the 2005 PSAC Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the team title for the first time since 1990, Wirnsberger’s recruiting classes were ranked 14th and 19th, respec-tively, in 2003 and 2004, while his first two recruiting classes at Bucknell were ranked 14th and 25th by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.). In 2004-05, Bloomsburg posted a 10-6 dual-meet record (4-2 EWL) and crowned three EWL champions while finishing fifth at the league tournament.

Prior to becoming head coach of the Huskies, Wirnsberger spent six years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, where he helped coach a team that featured three All-Americans and finished in the top-25 at the NCAA Tourna-ment in 2000 (19th) and 2001 (23rd). The Hokies qualified a school-record five wrestlers for NCAAs in 2000, and the following year the program was invited to compete at the National Team Duals at Penn State.

At both Bloomsburg and Virginia Tech, Wirnsberger gained extensive ex-perience in the areas of national recruiting, fundraising and summer camp administration.

A 1995 graduate of Michigan State with a degree in criminal justice, Wirn-sberger posted a 35-8 record and was the Big Ten Champion and NCAA run-ner-up at 158 pounds in 1995. That was his third of three straight All-America plaques, and he earned team Most Valuable Wrestler honors. in three trips to nationals. During his career at Michigan State, the team went from a struggling program to a 12th-place national ranking his sophomore year, 25th his junior year and third in the nation his senior season.

A three-year captain of the Spartans, Wirnsberger continued his wrestling career at the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club while training for the 1997 World Team Trials. He qualified for the trials after placing sixth at the USA Senior Freestyle Tournament, his first senior competition. Participating at a higher weight class of 167 pounds, Wirnsberger defeated such renowned opponents as two-time NCAA champion Marcus Mollica of Arizona State and Iowa’s NCAA champion Darryl Weber.

Wirnsberger began his coaching career with the Mason (Mich.) Youth Wrestling Program. He later moved back to his native South Carolina, where he served as head wrestling coach at Greer High School. In addition to his head coaching duties, Wirnsberger was the junior varsity football coach and taught classes for autistic students at Greer Middle School.

Wirnsberger resides in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Dana, a former athletic trainer at Bucknell, and their three sons, Cade (11), Max (8) and Chase (6).

A 2007 NCAA qualifier, Jim Gibson joined the Bison staff in the summer of 2012. A four-year starter at Edinboro and a 2009 World Team Trials qualifier, Gibson had coached at Clarion since 2007.

A 2007 graduate of Edinboro with a degree in health and physical educa-tion, Gibson was part of two teams that finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. He captured a 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title, earned a silver medal in 2005, and finished in the top five in the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) twice, including a runner-up showing as a senior. Following his collegiate career, Gibson spent time wrestling at the senior and international levels. In addition to qualifying for the World Team Trials in 2009, he was champion of the 2009 Northeast Regional Qualifier and a fourth-place finisher at the same event in 2008. Gibson also finished in the

top eight at the 2008 U.S. National Championships Challenge Tournament, qualifying for the 16-man U.S. National Championships. The lone member of his high school’s wrestling team, Gibson was runner-up at the Pennsylvania State Championships as a senior after an eighth-place showing as a junior.

Gibson began his tenure at Clarion as a graduate assistant coach and also served as a volunteer assistant for the Division I program that produced two All-Americans, 11 NCAA qualifiers, six PSAC champions, three EWL gold med-al winners and four Academic All-Americans since he arrived in July 2007. The Golden Eagles placed 18th at the 2012 NCAA Championship.

Gibson earned his master’s in education from Clarion in 2009 and has been an adult probation and parole officer since 2010. He married his wife, Sarah, in May 2009.

Dustin Manotti, who was a four-time All-American at Cornell, enters his second year of his second tour of duty with the Bison wrestling program. He spent the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons with the program as an assistant coach, and returned to the staff prior to 2014-15.

Manotti, a native of nearby Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, enjoyed an illustri-ous wrestling career for the Big Red as he became just the second wrestler in program history to take home All-America honors four times, with his best NCAA finish coming his senior year when he took third at 157 pounds.

In addition, Manotti made his mark on Cornell’s record book, graduating as the third-winningest wrestler in program history with 133 career victories and was also ranked 10th in overall winning percentage at .836 (133-26). He

was a three-time All-Ivy selection, earning first-team honors in 2005 and sec-ond-team recognition in 2003 and 2004. As a freshman in 2003, Manotti was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.

While wrestling for Mifflinburg Area High School, Manotti placed three times at the Pennsylvania state tournament, including a runner-up showing as a junior.

Manotti graduated from Cornell in 2006 with a bachelor of science in communications. He served as an intern for the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) during the summer of 2005 and has spent time as a vol-unteer wrestling coach in the Cortland School District in Cortland, New York.

Former Bucknell great Kevin LeValley returned to his alma mater as an as-sistant wrestling coach in May 2015. A 2011 Bucknell graduate, LeValley was a two-time All-American during his time as a Bison and he still holds school records for wins in a season and a career.

LeValley, who served as team captain, had a remarkable career during his time as a Bison, earning All-America honors in 2010 and 2011. The three-time NCAA qualifier at 149 pounds compiled a 127-40 career record, including 42-8 as a junior and 34-3 as a senior. He became the second Bucknell wrestler to win an EIWA title, handing Cornell’s Kyle Dake his final collegiate loss in the 2011 EIWA finals in Sojka Pavilion.

Following his graduation from Bucknell with a degree in education, LeVal-ley moved to Minneapolis to pursue a master’s degree in applied kinesiology and sport management at the University of Minnesota, which he obtained in December 2013.

LeValley spent four years at Minnesota working as an administrative assis-tant and recruiting coordinator with the Gophers wrestling team that placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times and in the top five three times. Additionally, LeValley was a coach at the Pinnacle Wrestling School in Shoreview, Minnesota.

While at Minnesota, LeValley continued to compete internationally for the Gopher Wrestling Club and Minnesota Storm. He has been ranked as high as 18th in the world, and is a current member of the U.S. National Team at 70kg (154 pounds). He has had great success in international competitions, earning gold at the 2013 Cerro Pelado International in Cuba, taking second at the 2014 Alexander Medved International in Belarus and placing third at the 2014 Dave Schultz Memorial International. He also finished fourth at the 2014 U.S. Open and third at the 2015 World Team Trials.

LeValley and his wife, Amanda, were married in October 2014. She is a certified athletic trainer and medical device sales rep.

The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), as it is known today, had its beginning in 1904. Then, students from a number of schools in the East met and proposed the creation of a group whose responsibility it would be to organize intercollegiate wrestling as a formal sport. One year later wrestlers from Columbia, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale competed in the first EIWA tournament.

Under the management of J. Edward Weisenfluh, a student at Penn, the first tournament was held April 7, 1905, in the Gymnasium of Weightman Hall on the Penn campus in Philadelphia. At this first meeting the Intercollegiate Wrestling Association was born. Thereafter, three meetings were held each year, once just before the tournament, once just after the meet, and once in October at which a new tourney site was selected.

No team scoring was kept at the first EIWA tournament in 1905. All that was recorded was the total number of bouts won by each wrestler, in the following weight classes: 115, 125, 135, 145, 158, 175 and heavyweight. Based on that system, Yale won, followed in order by Columbia, Princeton and Pennsylvania.

Remaining strictly a student organization for three and one-half decades, the group gradually assumed the name “Eastern” to distinguish itself from the faculty-controlled “Western” Association, now known as the Big Ten. Ultimately, after the 1939 meet, the students capitulated to faculty control, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, organized in 1938, has since provided formal structure for the EIWA, which now functions as an allied entity of the ECAC.

“The Easterns” have survived both as the oldest intercollegiate wrestling organization and as a unique athletic event with unusually widespread spectator appeal.

Today, membership in the EIWA numbers 16 schools: American, Army, Binghamton, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Drexel, Franklin & Mar-shall, Harvard, Hofstra, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Sacred Heart. Binghamton, Drexel and Hofstra were the most recent additions, joining in the summer of 2013.

Bucknell hosted the 2011 EIWA Championships in Sojka Pavilion, its first conference championship hosting duty since 1997. The two-day event took place in Sojka Pavilion, Bucknell’s primary bas-ketball arena. Thirteen teams visited Lewisburg for the 107th EIWA Championships and Cornell came away with the team title for the fifth consecutive year. The Big Red had four individual champions.

Bucknell finished in eighth place in the team standings, but the highlight of the weekend for the Bison was senior All-American Kevin LeValley claiming the program’s second-ever EIWA individual title. The second-seeded LeValley upset top-seeded Kyle Dake of Cornell, who had won the NCAA title at 141 pounds one year earlier, in overtime in front of crowd of nearly 1,700 on a snowy Sunday afternoon.

Overall, Bucknell had five placewinners: LeValley (1st at 149), Brantley Hooks (7th at 157), Corey Lear (7th at 165), Rob Waltko (6th at 184) and Jay Hahn (4th at 197).

The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. Six former wrestlers are among the 245 outstand-ing members whose contributions to Bucknell athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame.

Bryan Burns (’91) - Bryan Burns ‘91 was a three-time conference champion, a three-time NCAA qualifier, and an All-American in the 190-pound weight class as a senior in 1991. Burns captured East Coast Conference titles at 190 pounds in 1989 and 1990, and then he won the East Coast Wrestling Association championship in 1991. He won three matches at NCAAs in both 1990 and 1991, and his eighth-place finish in 1991 made him the second All-American in the history of the Bison wrestling program. Burns helped lead Bucknell to runner-up team finishes at the ECC Championships in 1989 and 1990, and he went on to finish his career with an 81-30-1 individual record. He was ranked third on Bucknell’s all-time wins list at the time of his graduation. Burns’ 32 victories in 1990-91 was a school record at the time.

Ed Curran (’88) - Ed Curran was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion during his time as a member of the Bison. Hall of Famer Tom Scotton is the only other Bucknell wrestler to make that claim. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times and was a quarterfinalist in 1986. As a senior, Curran posted a 23-4 record at 134 pounds, and he finished with an impressive career record of 71-20-1, which was then the second-highest victory total at Bucknell. He was the Outstanding Wrestler at both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Cornell Invitational in 1987. Curran was just as successful off the wrestling mat, where he made the Dean’s List every semester, won the prestigious University Prize for Men and was a Second Team Academic All-American. He also earned the ECAC Medallion and graduated magna cum laude. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2005.

Bobby Ferraro (’94) - A first-ballot Hall of Fame choice and Bucknell’s first two-time wrestling All-American, Bobby Ferarro graduated with an impressive 118-21-1 career mat record and four East Coast Wrestling Association gold medals. He became just the third grappler in school history to earn All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 177-pound class at the NCAA Championships during his senior season, and then he repeated the distinction with a seventh-place finish as a graduate student in 1995. Ferraro finished 31-8 in 1994, falling just one victory shy of the school record, and he tied a 37-year-old school mark by recording pins in five straight matches. With a 30-6 record in 1995, Ferraro broke the school career victory record and finished second all-time with 44 falls. In becoming just the second man to win four ECWA titles, Ferraro in 1995 also helped the Bison to their second-ever team championship. He was the ECWA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1992 and never lost a conference bout. A two-time team captain, he won the Christy Mathewson Award as Bucknell’s top senior athlete. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004.

Richard P. Kaufmann (’68) - A three-year letterman in football and wrestling, Richard P. Kaufmann captained the 1967 football team and was co-captain of the wrestling team as a junior and senior. Kaufmann’s career dual match wrestling record was 17-12-2, and as a senior he won Bucknell’s Outstanding Multiple Sport Athlete Award and the Christy Mathewson Award as the outstanding athlete in the senior class. He began his football career at Bucknell as a fullback, but was moved to defensive end at the beginning of his junior year. He was twice named to the All-Pennsylvania second team and All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team at the new position. The top accounting student in his Bucknell class and a cum laude graduate, Kaufmann received an MBA from Harvard and later returned to the ministry. He served as executive pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and previously served as pastor of New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido, Calif. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1996.

Thomas M. Marchetti (’91) - Tom Marchetti was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, and as a sophomore in 1989 he became Bucknell’s very first wrestling All-American when he placed fourth at 167 pounds. Marchetti earned three consecutive East Coast Cconference titles from 1989-91, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 ECC Championships. He graduated as Bucknell’s all-time winningest wrestler with a 106-24 mark. His 31 victories in 1990-91 were second-most in program history at the time, while his 45-7 dual-match record was third-best all-time. Marchetti remains one of only five Bucknell wrestlers to win 80 percent of his matches over a four-year career, and he also set school marks for pins in a season (19) and career (41). Marchetti was a Freshman All-American in his first year at Bucknell and was nationally ranked in each of his final three seasons. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top senior athlete in his class, Marchetti was a two-year team captain. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

Thomas M. Scotton (’78) - Named All-East by National Mat News in 1978 and selected Bucknell’s outstanding wrestler four times, Scotton never lost a dual collegiate match on his way to three ECC championships and appearances at the NCAA Championships and holds several Bison mat records. Twice co-captain, he had a career record of 89-4-1. Entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. Bucknell Wrestling Facilities

Bucknell’s primary competition facility is Davis Gym. Dedi-cated in June 1938, the building was a gift of 20 members of the Bucknell Board of Trustees. It is named for John Warren Davis, an 1896 Bucknell graduate and chairman of the Board of Trustees at the time of dedication. The principal address at the cornerstone-laying ceremony in September 1937 was delivered by former baseball commissioner Judge Kenesaw M. Landis.

Seating capacity is 1,100 for Davis Gym, which in 2007 added an eye-catching scoreboard on the north wall, made possible by a generous donation from Bill Graham ’62.

Bucknell will wrestle three matches in Davis Gym in 2015-16. The Bison own a 39-19 record in the facility since the program was reinstated for the 2006-07 campaign.

Four-thousand seat Sojka Pavilion is the home of the Buck-nell men’s and women’s basketball teams, but the wrestling squad has also held a number of matches in the facility that opened in 2003.

The building was dedicated in honor of Dr. Gary A. Sojka, former president of Bucknell University and faculty member in the biology department.

The pavilion includes “walk-down” access and unob-structed views of the competition surface from all seating areas. Many of the 4,000 seats are fixed in place, while others are retractable to allow for an expandable open floor area. The facility also features concession areas, ticket windows, restrooms, handicapped seating, team and officials locker rooms, a media room and other meeting areas.

Sojka Pavilion was the host site of the 2011 EIWA Cham-pionships.

Bucknell will wrestle in Sojka Pavilion on three dates in 2015-16. The Bison own a 1-3 all-time dual record in the facil-ity, facing national powers Iowa (L), Rutgers (W), Nebraska (L) and Oklahoma State (L).

Dedicated on Dec. 2, 2006, the William A. Graham IV Varsity Wrestling Room serves as Bucknell’s primary practice facility. Bill Graham played a pivotal role in bringing back Bison wrestling as his generous donation helped Bucknell return the program to varsity status in addition to provid-

ing funding for Bison women’s athletics.

Plans for the Graham Building, which is expected to be completed just prior to the 2016-17 academic year, call for a 36,000-square-foot facility to the east of Sojka Pavilion. The Graham Wrestling Center will sit on the second floor and include new locker rooms, practice areas and additional student-centered spaces, including locations for academic support and

athletic training.

The new campus Health and Wellness Center will be located on the Graham Building's first floor, housing services such as Bucknell Student Health, Psychological Services and a campus-wide wellness initiative. It was important for Bill Graham that

the facility be one from which the entire campus can benefit.
