Coaching Staff
Former Wisconsin standout Karla Powell has joined the St. Johns River State College softball staff as the new assistant coach. “I am very excited to start this new journey at SJR State. Every day, I come to work getting to do what I am passionate about-meaning that I get to teach young girls the sport I love, assisting them to grow not only as softball players, but as young ladies as well.” A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Powell finished her career on Wisconsin’s all-time list sec-ond in walks (72), eighth in career home runs (15) and 10th in RBIs with 72. She earned first-team all-conference honors as a junior in 2011, when she batted .313 and led the Badgers in home runs (9), slugging percentage (.569) and doubles (10). Powell was also named Wisconsin’s Most Inspira-tional Player in 2012. Before arriving at SJR State, Karla was the volunteer softball coach at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., during the 2013-2014 seasons. In addition, Powell served as a stu-dent assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin from 2012-2013, when the Badgers won the Big Ten and advanced to the NCAA Regionals with a 44-13 overall record. Powell worked extensively with Wisconsin’s hitters and infielders, helped develop practice plans and analyzed film. Powell has also served as a camp instructor at Replay Hitting, the Diamond Elite Baseball & Softball Academy in Sterling, VA, as well as USA Preps Powered by Mizuno in Fresno, CA, and Chi-
cago. IL. A native of Ashburn, VA, Powell was a three-time Washington Post All-Met first-team selection and an ESPN High School All-Ameri-can out of Broad Run High School, the top high school team in the nation in 2008. Powell graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
Assistant Coach Karla Powell
Katie Brosky is entering her fifth season as head softball coach for the Vikings. Coach Brosky was born and raised in Palatka. She graduated from Palatka High School in 2003 and set the state strike-out record, with 471 strikeouts in a season, the same year. Brosky played at Seminole State College where she was named Female Athlete of the Year in 2005. She transferred to the University of North Florida and pitched for the Ospreys in the team’s first season as a Division I program. After graduating with honors from UNF, Coach Brosky attended Florida State University’s College of Law. While there, she played on the club softball team, was a member of the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Society, and worked in the athletic department. Coach Brosky graduated from law school in 2010 before coming to the St. Johns River State College softball program. Her sister, Kaley, played softball at the University of North Florida and is an assistant softball coach at Palatka High School. Both of her parents played sports for SJR State, and her mom was also the student government president. Coach Brosky has a dog named Rosin.
Head Coach Katie Brosky
Assistant Athletic Director John Theobold After graduating from the University of North Florida in 1974, John Theobold taught science and coached football, baseball and track at Orange Park High School until 1976, when he returned to Putnam County and taught math for 13 years, also coaching football for six and baseball for two of those years. In 1989, Theobold became the assistant principal for Interlachen High School, a position he held for eight years before transferring to W. H. Beasley Middle School, where he served as principal until the year 2000. Theobold served as the director of human resources for the Putnam County School District from 2000 - 2006, and the area director and chief negotiator from 2004 - 2009. He then became an area director and principal from 2006 - 2009. After retiring from the Putnam County School District with a total of 35 years in public education, Theobold began assisting Head Coach and Athletic Director Ross Jones at SJR State College in 2009. He serves as a member of the Putnam County Recreation Board, the SJR State Foundation Board, the SJR State Athletic Association Board, and has served on the United Way Board of Directors and the Florida Educa-tional Negotiators Board. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Florida. He played football at the University of Richmond from 1970 - 1971 and baseball at SJR State from 1971- 1972.
Theobold enjoys fishing and golf in his spare time. He and his wife, Sally, have two children, Jennifer and Joe, and three grandchildren, Aila, Lachlan and Naomi.

Ross Jones joined the St. Johns River State College staff as the head baseball coach on June 10, 2008 and assumed the position of athletic director on June 1, 2009. In his six seasons at SJR State, Jones has accumulated an overall record of 184-124 and a Mid-Florida Conference record of 85-58. These six seasons have been among the program’s most successful in its 54 year history and include two Mid-Florida Conference Championships (2013 and 2014) and three trips to the FCSAA State / NJCAA Region 8 Tournament (2010, 2013 and 2014). Jones is a 1984 graduate of Palatka High School. Upon graduating from high school, Jones was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1984 Major League Baseball amateur draft. He spent seven seasons pitching for the Rangers and Montreal Expos minor league systems. After retiring from professional baseball, Jones earned his A.A. degree from SJR State in 1991 and his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of North Florida in 1993. Jones is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time. Ross and his wife, Tish, have two sons, Tyler (23) and Hunter (20), and two daughters,
Taylor (17) and Tessa (15).
Athletic Director Ross Jones
Welcome to St. Johns River State College! As we begin the 2015 softball season, I would like to thank you and our sponsors for supporting our student-athletes, the College and its mission in the pursuit of academic, artistic and athletic excellence.
Since 1958, the College has been dedicated to the positive development of young men and women through a variety of academic and athletic programs. It is our fundamental belief that athletic endeavors, physical challenges and healthy competition inspire the strong character that is essential in the development of tomorrow’s leaders.
Following the 2012 reorganization of our athletic programs, the College is better equipped to focus its resources on the programs we retained, enhancing the financial and academic support necessary to achieve immediate competitive success and increased scholastic achievement. Last year, a number of our athletes not only graduated with stellar athletic achievements, but each team’s collective grade point average ranked higher than the student body’s GPA as a whole, giving true meaning to the term “student-athlete.”
I would also like to congratulate our student-athletes who signed National Let-ters of Intent to advance in their academic and athletic careers at the university level. We are proud of our student-ath-letes for their accomplishments, both on the field and in the classroom. For more than 50 years, the communities of Putnam, Clay and St. Johns counties have entrusted SJR State for its academic excellence. Our close-knit environment is ideal for fostering each student’s potential as he or she prepares to either enter the university system or enter the workforce as a trained professional. I hope you enjoy today’s game, and I invite you and your family to return to our beautiful campus to experience and support our volleyball and baseball teams as well. Go Vikings!
