TRANSCRIPT

  • AUGUST 17, 2014

  • Welcome! We are glad youre here! We invite you to

seek out the folks wearing the Ask Me badge.

Through them you will find information about the

ministries of Salem Heights Church and how to

become involved. Please fill out a Visitor Card and drop

it in one of the offering boxes as you leave or scan this code to go

directly to our website and fill out a visitor card. We have an excellent

nursery and programs for children newborn through high school. Any

of the ushers will be happy to direct you to the proper classroom. If

you feel more comfortable having your infant with you during the

service, the last row in the Auditorium will be reserved for parents with

small children. There is a private room for nursing mothers across the

hall from the Auditorium with a rocking chair, changing table and

portable crib. For your convenience, it also includes a monitor to

enable you to still hear and view the service.

    Our Purpose...

To reach people with the love of Jesus Christ, provide a safe and

supportive environment, proclaim the standards of Gods truth,

duplicate the Christian life in others, and celebrate the majesty

and works of Our Great God.

    New to Salem Heights?

    HEY, WHERE ARE

    YOU GOING?

    2 Corinthians 11:3

    Presented by Pastor Justin Greene

But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds

will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.

  • Giving Update

THE MINISTRY OF SALEM HEIGHTS CHURCH The ministry of Salem Heights Church is funded entirely by the generous giving of Gods people. You will notice that we do not pass the offering plate; however, there are offering boxes in the back of the auditorium. We have done this so no one gives out of compulsion. We believe from the Word of God that the Spirit of God will lead people towards giving back to God of their first fruits. ...God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7) and we know He blesses those who take His Word seriously in every regard. Thank you for prayerfully supporting Salem Heights financially as we desire to reach the lost and disciple the Saints.

  • HEY, WHERE ARE YOU

    GOING? 2 Corinthians 11:3

    Presented by

    Pastor Justin Greene

    August 17, 2014

In The Great Evangelical Recession, John Dickerson makes

    some shocking observations.

Scott Miller always recited his AWANA Bible memory

verses with uncanny speed. The boy had a way with

Scripture. He attended Christian school and was raised by

evangelical parents who have been faithful in their thirty-

five-year marriage. They took him to church every Sunday

morning. And Sunday night. And Wednesday.

Scott, now thirty, doesnt believe in God anymore. The last

time he set foot in a church building was for a wedding,

two years ago. He doesnt think the Bible is believable or

reliable or relatable to his life.

Chances are, you know a Scott of your own a young

evangelical prodigal. Scott is one of about 260,000

evangelical young people who walk away from

Christianity every year. Hes one of the roughly two in

three evangelical 20-somethings who abandon the faith

    by age thirty.1

  • These findings align with many of our own personal

experiences as evangelicals, and yet we are surprised to

learn the reality that the movement is weakening and may

    be dying.

We are failing to make new disciples. We are losing folks

from every generation. Our existing disciples are not

generally reproductive in their living or transformed in their

thinking. And we are losing six or seven out of every ten

    evangelical teens.

Somewhere along the way, our focus on programs and

techniques, dollars, ministry size, and perhaps even

powerful worship distracted us from the basics. Jesus did

not tell Peter to build a building or a program, not a

production or an organization. His words were simple, and

they are the heart of the ... solution.2

Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you truly love me? He

answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said,

Take care of my sheep. ~ John 21

  • BACKDROP

Paul was preaching to disillusioned Corinthian believers.

    They didnt like authoritative preaching.

They didnt like the Jesus of the Bible.

They didnt want a Holy Spirit that would lead them to

    holiness, brokenness or service.

They didnt want a gospel that penetrated hard

hearts, saved from hell, and transferred their

    allegiance to a new King.

    ...They were carnal.

    A VERY REAL FEAR

    1. Paul was afraid they would be deceived.

Satan didnt start with outright denial...

He led them to question the process.

He led them to question the purpose of the provision.

He led them to question Gods perspective.

  • Four Questions for the Church-Leaver

(Modified from Why We Love the Church)

    1. Are you leaving the church or the faith?

    2. Are you inconsistent or (big word) duplicitous?

    3. Are you making an idol out of authenticity?

    4. Are you repeating the mistakes of a previous generation?

    2. Paul was afraid they would lose their devotion.

    Sincere = Genuine... without wax

Pure = Made of only one thing ... unmixed, undiluted

A sincere, pure faith focuses on the Good News of

    Christ.

By choosing their own way, Adam and Eve ran from the

presence of God rather than to it.
