The heavy rainfall that has been experi-enced in Eldoret over the past two days has caused damage running into mil-lions of shillings. Hundreds of residents have also been displaced. The downpour caused flooding due to poor drainage as the waters damaged crop fields and swept away people’s cars. “Many businesses were forced to close, with water soaking food items in shops. People were trapped in their cars and commuting in the town was a night-mare,” says Collins Rutto, who runs a confectionary store in the town.Eldoret was initially an agricultural hub but has gradually turned into com-mercial hub, attracting hundreds of potential investors. Infrastructure has, however, been a major challenge as the town’s Central Business District becomes heavily congested. The town’s poor drainage system and di-lapidated access roads have made doing business in the urban centre a difficult undertaking.

“The world needs to recognise the fact that this is a global threat which requires to be countered by a global partnership in order to defeat and secure, not just Kenya, but the world,” he said during the ‘Quest means business’ interview hosted by Richard Quest. He said security is key in ensuring long-term stability in the East

Africa region and urged the international community to rally behind the country. He called for support of the international community in helping Kenyan and other troops from other African nations which are in Somalia trying to root out the Al-Shabaab. “We would like to see the world

rally behind us and fully support our mission in Somalia so that our forces can expand their operations and reduce the area of Al-Shabaab’s operation,” he said.Kenyatta, who is in Washington DC to attend the US-Africa Summit, criticised western nations for issuing travel advisories to their citizens against Kenya, saying such actions

only emboldened the terrorists.US and UK have been the key nations which advised their citizens against travelling to certain parts of Kenya, citing increased terror threats.“They don’t help in defeating the terrorists. If anything, they encourage and strengthen them,” Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta said the Government is doing everything within “its limited resources” to combat the threat posed by terrorists.“We are tremendously increasing our investment in the security sector because we recognise that security is key to ensuring long term investment,” he said.

SAndWiched: eldoret residents are counting losses after storms pounded eldoret town on Monday. the rains left the entire urban centre flooded as residents struggled to walk through water-logged streets.

A Russian crime ring has amassed the largest known collection of sto-len Internet credentials, including 1.2 billion user name and password combinations. It has also hacked into more than 500 million email addresses, security researchers say.The records, discovered by Hold Se-curity, a firm in Milwaukee, include confidential material gathered from 420,000 websites, including house-hold names, and small Internet sites. Hold Security has a history of un-covering significant hacks, including the theft last year of tens of millions of records from Adobe Systems.Hold Security would not name the

victims, citing nondisclosure agree-ments and a reluctance to name companies whose sites remained vulnerable. “Hackers did not just target US companies, they targeted any website they could get, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small websites,” said Alex Holden, found-er and chief information security officer of Hold Security. “And most of these sites are still vulnerable.”Holden is paid to consult on the security of corporate websites. He revealed details of the attack this week to coincide with discussions at an industry summit.

There are worries among some in the security community that keeping personal information out of the hands of thieves is increasingly becoming a losing battle. In Decem-ber, 40 million credit card numbers and 70 million addresses, phone numbers and additional pieces of personal information were stolen from retail giant Target by hackers in Eastern Europe. And in October, federal prosecu-tors said an identity theft service in Vietnam obtained up to 200 million personal records. But the discovery by Hold Security dwarfs the incidents, and the size of

the latest revelations has prompted security experts to call for improved identity protection on the web.“Companies relying on user names and passwords have to develop a sense of urgency about changing this,” said Avivah Litan, a security analyst at the research firm Gartner. “Until they do, criminals will just keep stockpiling people’s creden-tials.”Websites in Russia have also been hacked, and Holden says he saw no link between the hackers and the Russian government. The criminals have not sold many of the records online but appear to

be using the stolen information to send spam on social networks such as Twitter at the behest of other groups. But selling more of the records on the black market would be lucrative. While a credit card can be easily cancelled, personal credentials like an email address, social security number or password can be used for identity theft. Because people tend to use the same passwords for different sites, criminals test stolen credentials on websites where valu-able information can be gleaned. These include those belonging to banks and brokerage firms.

A suspected thug died after a bus he and other accomplices had hijacked last night was involved in an accident on Mombasa Road. Eight thugs, posing as passengers, took over the the Kitengela-bound bus at Bellevue and start-ed robbing passengers. Police say the bus, which was being driven by one of the thugs, lost control and rammed into a wall killing him on the spot.

A man was stabbed to death after a quarrel over a woman in Riruta, Nairobi. The deceased had picked up a quarrel with another man over a woman when he was stabbed and died on the spot. According to a new analy-sis, Monaco, the tiny French Principality covering less than 500 acres, being home to the most millionaires per capita. In fact, close to 30 per cent of the population are millionaires. While most millionaires may come from other parts of the world, the Europe has the highest number per person, with three out of 10 people in some countries being filthy rich. And while most millionaires may come from other parts of the world, the gap between the

rich and the poor tends to be quite high. This is not the same in Monaco, a small country where neighbours are almost as rich as one another.Zurich, the largest city in Swit-zerland, is a close second with over 27 per cent of the public topping the rich list. It is followed in distant third by another Swiss city, Geneva, where about two in every 10 are millionaires. The numbers in Kenya may not be as high but they are promising. A similar report indicated that Kenya has 5,000 dollar millionaires. That number is set to double over the next 6 years.

The Independent Police Oversight Author-ity (IPOA) has now moved to court seeking the nullification of last month’s police recruitment as the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) prepares to release its findings on a probe it ordered into the exercise.IPOA chairman Macharia Njeru had already dismissed the probe saying the multi-agency team tasked with the inves-tigations could not present an objective report since most of its members came from bodies that were involved in the exercise. The authority asked the court to revoke the selection of some 10, 000 recruits and order a repeat because of the graft and other malpractices reported during the July 14 hiring which IPOA said left many people aggrieved. “It was marred by maleficent irregularities and was not in compliance with the constitution,” Mr Njeru argued in suit filed before High Court Judge, Justice Weldon Korir in Nairobi.NPSC is scheduled to give its verdict on the matter tomorrow after analyzing the report of its probe team which was submitted earlier this week. Many bodies including Parliament and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commis-sion have asked for the recruitment to be repeated.

African leaders demand more respect from WestThere was little time for pleasantries on Tuesday night when five African presidents took to the stage at the US-Africa Business Forum in Washington DC.Right off the bat, Tanzania’s Jakaya Kikwete accused the US of historically not “taking Africa seriously,” a state of affairs he hoped the US-

Africa Summit would turn around.Kikwete said it was time relations between US and Africa moved beyond that of ‘donor and recipient’ into one of economic partners.“Imagine what would happen in terms of the growth rates across Africa if there was no shortage of power,” Rwanda’s

President Paul Kagame said.South Africa’s Jacob Zuma concurred that the Summit could not have come at a more opportune time given African countries were more united under the African Union. He said the continent spoke with one voice, unlike in the past.Kagame said it was time

the true picture of Africa emerged in the West as Africa had depended too long on others “to tell their story.”An untold story, Zuma said, of African leaders taking the lead in addressing challenges facing the continent such as Ebola, insecurity and corruption. “As African

leaders we have a peer review mechanism. We keep track of each other’s progress. Where else in the world does that happen?” he posed. The skewed perceptions of Africa in the West, Kikwete said, was evidenced by the question posed to them by moderator, Charlie Rose on Ebola. “Tanzania is in East

Africa,” he told him, drawing howls of laughter.“Now there is Ebola, so the whole African continent is being perceived as if everywhere there is Ebola,” he added. He said Africa was not one country but comprises a host of countries that are distinct from one another.

Taking aspirin every day can reduce chances of developing bowel or stomach cancers, a review of available evidence suggests. But the scientists have cautioned that medical advice must be sought before using the drugs as aspirin can cause internal bleeding. In a report published in the journal Annals of Oncology, scientists from Queen Mary University of London report that aspirin reduces the number of deaths from bowel, stomach and oesophageal cancer by between 30 to 40 per cent. The experts studied 200 tests on the benefits and harm of taking aspirin. There was also weaker and more variable evidence that the drug reduces deaths from breast, prostate and lung cancer. The study found out

that people should take the drug for at least five years to realise benefits.Prof Jack Cuzick, who led the research, urged all healthy people aged 50 and above to consider taking a small dose (75mg) of the drug every day for a decade. Their prediction is that if 1,000 individuals aged 60 years took the drug for 10 years, at least 16 fewer deaths could be recorded from cancer in a decade. Over the

same period, there could be one fewer death from heart attack but two extra deaths from bleeding.“Whilst there are some serious side-effects that can’t be ignored, taking aspirin daily looks to be the most important thing we can do to reduce cancer after stopping smoking and reducing obesity, and will probably be much easier to implement,” Prof Cuzick, who has been taking aspirin for four years, said. Aspirin’s well known possible side-effects include bleeding in the stomach and brain. And researchers warned that anyone at high risk of bleeding, including people with blood disorders who take blood thinning medication, or are frequent smokers or drinkers, are more likely to suffer the side-effects.

Death toll in China quake nears 600 with 9 missingThe death toll from the earthquake that struck China’s southwestern Yunnan province on Sunday has risen to 589, with nine people still missing, the ministry of Civil Affairs announced early today.Among the reported deaths, 504 were in the worst-hit Ludian County and 72 in Qiaojia County. In addition to the deaths, 2, 401 people were reported injured. One of the rescued victims,

88-year-old Xiong Zhengfen, was found Tuesday after 50 hours buried under rubble in Babaocun village, near the quake’s epicentre. Doctors told local media that she was uninjured and her vital signs were normal. She was taken to the county hospital after being rescued. The 6.1-magnitude quake struck a mountainous area, destroying thousands of houses and triggering landslides.

Several roads have been blocked and there are concerns about barrier lakes being formed when the debris blocks rivers in the area. The quake’s epicentre was in Longtoushan Township in Ludian County, a region with steep hills and narrow roads. China has sent thousands of troops to the area to assist survivors and search debris for any trapped people. Tents and relief goods are also being brought in both

by road and helicopter. But teams trying to repair damaged roads are being hampered by torrential rain, rockfalls and aftershocks, local reports say. Officials have also urged volunteers to stay away from the area because the damage to infrastructure means routes that are open are very congested. The area is a mountainous region, known for its natural scenery and ethnic diversity, but is also prone to natural

disasters and lies on a major earthquake fault line. Yunnan’s neighbouring province, Sichuan, witnessed a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in 2008, where at least 87,000 people died. Meanwhile, 4,200 residents have been evacuated from one area because of a barrier lake on the Niulan river. Waters levels in the lake were rising by 16cm per hour, Xinhua news agency quoted a technical specialist as saying.

South Sudan talks stall asrebels stay awayThe August 10 deadline put on South Sudan warring parties to agree on a transi-tional government and end the seven-month conflict in the world’s newest nation may not yield fruits after rebels failed to attend the second day of the peace talks yesterday.Organisers of the talks said it was not clear why they had not shown up. On Monday, rebel negotiators had com-plained about the continued presence of Ugandan forces in South Sudan. The talks are part of a long-running effort to final-ise details on a transitional government. It is not clear whether they will continue. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad), which is oversee-ing the talks has set a 10 August deadline to agree on a transitional government and implement a ceasefire. The last round of talks between President Salva Kiir and rebel leader, Riek Mach-ar stalled in June.Conflict erupted in Decem-ber after Mr Kiir accused Mr Machar - his former deputy - of plotting a coup. Mr Machar denied the allegation, but then gathered a rebel army to fight the government. Speaking in Washington on Tuesday, US Secretary of State, John Kerry accused Mr Machar of being responsible for breaking previous ceasefires. “He needs to understand the importance of living by the agreements,” Mr Kerry said.More than 1.5 million have been displaced and the UN has warned that the country is on the verge of famine. Igad has now urged the international community to pressurise the rebels to go back to the negotiation table. Earlier, chief mediator, Seyoum Mesfin had warned of punitive measures if these round of talks failed.

As demand for social venues and meeting space in the city rises, organisations are cashing in on the trend to offer affordable solutions. One of the biggest bothers for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is finding affordable venues for meet-ings. But hotels have stepped in by offering cheaper spaces for as low as Sh100 an hour.Restaurants, churches and schools have created venues to meet the needs of small businesses, organisations and social groups.Apart from business meetings, people meet to organise social events such as burials and weddings. Most of the meeting points are in Nairobi’s Central Busi-ness District, which is seen as a popular and convenient meeting point.Derick Olum, Chairperson of Skylink Designers, an organisation that brings together three small-scale

design companies, prefers holding fortnight meetings at Afya Centre where they pay Sh300 per hour. The popular Jumuia Coffee house and restaurant at All Saints’ Cathedral also hosts events, including business meetings for DJs and a spoken word forum known as Fresh ‘0Fresh Friday’.Clare Kemunto, who runs the centres says they host at least 40 meetings daily.“Each space attracts different charges. Those holding larg-er meetings are supposed to book in advance,’’ she says. The charges range between Sh150 and Sh250 per hour. The Salvation Army building near Nairobi’s Bus Station hosts hundreds of similar meetings on a weekly basis. The building is split to meet different sizes of groups for as low as Sh100 per hour. An attendant notes that a church can collect at least Sh15,000 per day from such

Buying or building your house and moving in is one of life’s most exhilarating moments. People have been inspired to design their houses in unusual yet creative ways. Those who crave to be unique have gone out of their way to carve homes out of very bizarre but astonishing objects. In Belgium, an old water tower that was built nearly 100 years ago was transformed into a home. The modification process of the 250,000 liter reservoir started in 2007.The 100 foot high structure went out of service in 1990.It is said that it also served as a Nazi retreat in times of war.

Looking at the concrete struc-ture, one can barely believe it was once a water basin. Today, it is a five storey single family apartment. At the tower’s peak, the residents enjoy a breathtaking view of the nearby village. The interior is furnished with sparkling white walls, wooden and ceramic tiled floor, white concrete ceiling and a spiral staircase, winding up to other floors. When night falls, the fluorescent light bulbs circling the apartment’s exterior walls transforms it into a glowing spectacle. This is definitely one of the world’s most peculiar homes.

Part of the task of decorating a home or building is to choose the right materials and finishes to really set off the room. This can be a tricky task to accomplish on your own so an interior designer may be invaluable.Materials and finishes are those things that you see as part of a design project. Choosing the right ones will mean the difference between a sloppily pulled together look and one that is cohesive and has the wow factor. Some examples of materials

and finishes include: paints, floor coverings such as tiles, wallpaper, laminates, fabrics and metal finishes. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list and the inte-rior designer will have access to materials and finishes that you may not even know exist. An interior designer will work with you to ensure that you get materials and finishes that are practical, easy to care for, look good, and within your budget. In fashion, it is all about the latest trends but is certain is that fashion rules will always be broken.Fashion rules are considered to be the line that is not to be crossed but as the trends evolve, so do the rules. One of the oldest rules in the fashion book is no wearing stockings or socks with open-toe shoes although lately the rule is being broken left, right and centre by fashion icons. The look has been called ugly by fashion critics but in fact, the bolder the pair of socks worn with shoes the better it looks. The trick is to keep the front toe seams of the socks hidden. Sandals and tights also work.Mixing prints is not consid-ered acceptable in the fashion world; from stripes and polka dots to leopard and paisley. But mixed prints can look extremely fresh, and elevate one’s look from ordinary to street-style immediately. Navy and black do not

match. The reason for this is that the two colours appear to be almost similar and it is hard to tell them apart. But in a time where wearing all black is considered a fashion statement, there is no reason why navy and black cannot be matched. They bring out a modern combination.Wearing red and pink togeth-er is also a no-no. These two colours are attention grabbers and if you wear a pink top or skirt, it is going to be the centre of attention the same applies to a red one so you wear one of the co-lours when you want to grab attention, when paired, they will divide the attention. But dividing of attention is also good, this will make your outfit eye-catching and it will look quite modern. The last but not least is, go somewhere overdressed. Even when you get a party invitation that says “come as you are,” look the very best.

Tattoos have over the time, managed to find their way into mainstream culture and are no longer considered a taboo. They are so commonplace that people are going to extremes, like getting their tongues tattoed, in to order to be unique. Tongue tattoos are a new trend in the body modification world. Getting a tattoo on the tongue is not much different than getting one on any other body part.It is actually less painful than getting one on the body because the tongue is simply a muscle and not a section of skin. People that have had it done say it is just like a tingling sensation on the mouth.Unlike other tattoos, they do not take a

long time to complete and it requires one to stick out their tongue during the whole process, which is not comfortable. The pain comes in the aftercare process. The tongue tattoo takes a shorter time to heal (three weeks) than most other tattoos (up to three months) but it will be very painful. There will be some crust building on the tattoo as it heals, making eating, drinking or even swallowing saliva very difficult. The tongue will sometimes go numb, mak-ing it even difficult to speak and there is also the risk of swelling and one getting an infection especially on the first few days.

using loud, bold and tasteful colours. She tries to set herself apart from the other Kenyan fashion designers, who have developed a very common liking for Kitenge and Ankara fabric, and bases her collections on familiar elements like the earth, fire and water. Her fashion House, Sara-

ton Hotel Nairobi. Her designs impressed many and led her to showcasing at the Nairobi Fashion Market, the Naivasha Fashion Weekend and at the African Fashion Week in New York.Sara says that she is inspired to design clothes that people can wear straight from the runway to the street. Her designs are also popular with celebrities like gospel musician Cece Sagini.

Humphrey Kayange is not likely to play for at least three months after picking an ankle injury in the Commonwealth Games that ended last Saturday. The player was left behind when the team returned home early this week and will proceed to London for a specialist analysis before boarding the flight home to begin a long recovery process.Emerging from a ruck after a clash with New Zealand’s Ben Lam, Kayange looked unstable and was immediately taken off. X-rays on the ankle were taken before he was put on an ambulance to the athlete’s well-equipped clinic. More X-rays and MRI showed a tear in the ankle ligaments. “I sought a second opinion from an orthopaedic who

agreed with the initial assessment by the doctors,” Kayange said. Meanwhile, Kayange’s X-Ray pictures have been sent to South Africa for more diagnosis by Kenya Sevens consultant doctor. “The injury was devastating because it happened earlier in the game. I was a bit disappointed but remained positive that in rugby, injuries do happen. Initially, I was very low because I was not exactly sure what the diagnosis will be,” said Kayange. “It is my first major injury and I am sure to come back. I will just take it easy because it will be until December when I can start running and January for the hard work. But, I will be back,” Kayange said.

The second leg of the National Sevens Series, the Dala Sevens, is set for this weekend’s at the Mam-boleo Showground in Kisumu. Series champions KCB who won the first round of this season’s series, the Kabeberi Sevens, are seeded first for the Kisumu leg and headline Pool A where they will play alongside Mwamba, Nondies and TUK.Defending Dala champions Strathmore are in Pool D with Impala, Blak Blad and Mean Machine while hosts Kisumu are drawn alongside Kabeberi Sevens surprise package Catholic University, Homeboyz and Western Bulls in what is potentially the pool of death. Kenya Harlequin head coach Sydney Obon-yo, is keen for his team to make amends in Kisumu after faring badly in the on sided final loss to KCB last week.“It was good seeing these young boys make it to the final amid stiff competition. In the final match, we did not take our chances but Quins is ready to go for the title. The only thing to do is get better,” said Obonyo. “We have learnt one or two things. Defi-nitely we wouldn’t want to repeat similar mistakes.”

Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho says the club will not miss defender, David Luiz following his big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazil international completed a move to Paris shortly before the start of the World Cup, which took

place in his home nation, for a fee of Sh7.3billion. Mourinho said Luiz wasn’t really good enough for Chel-sea and only played when others couldn’t. And as a result, he believes the squad is much stronger without him. “Last season he was not regular

first choice for us. As a central defender not at all, it was John Terry and Gary Cahill the whole season,” the Portuguese told reporters after Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Werder Bre-men. “In midfield, he was a physical guy and gave us important things,

especially in the Champions League when [the cup-tied Nemanja] Matic couldn’t play. But this season, Matic can play in the Champions League so we don’t lose that physicality.“The fact we have Cesc Fabregas moves us in a different direction. It’s

something that our football needs, and we want to go in that direction.“David did important things here, was always a good professional and we will miss him as a good guy. But from a football point of view, we believe our squad is stronger.”

Kenya’s athletes will shift attention to the 19th Africa senior championships which will take place in Marrakech, Morocco from 10 to 14 August 2014. The competition will help select African athletes for the next intercontinental cup which is planned on 13 and 14 September 2014 in Mar-rakech. Kenya won 10 gold, 10 silver and five bronze to finish ninth at the just concluded 20th Common-wealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Kenya team leaves today to Morocco keen to turn the tables on perennial rivals Ethiopia. It remains to be seen whether Kenyan athletes will live up to their prom-

ises to stop the Ethiopians in middle and long distance races. Jairus Kipchoge Birech, who bagged silver in 3,000m steeplechase in Glasgow on Saturday, is keen to prove critics wrong. Birech, who is a cousin of 2007 world 800m champion Alfred Yego Kirwa, said: “I really wanted to win the race. But I am happy a Kenyan won the title. I stumbled on the barrier on my right knee and felt the pains. By the second last lap, Jon-athan Ndiku had noticed and even pitied me,” said Birech, who comes from Chesunet Village near Moi University’s main campus.

Tiger Woods has not yet ruled out playing in the final major of the season - this week’s USPGA Championship. Agent Mark Steinberg said on Tuesday the American could wait until Wednesday before deciding on his participation. The former world No 1 was forced to pull out midway through Sunday’s final round at the Bridgestone invitational with a back injury. The USPGA Championship starts in Kentucky on Thurs-day - but as it stands, Woods is scheduled to play despite his breakdown at the weekend. And Steinberg confirmed no decision has been made.

“Way too early. He has to rest and get treatment and then assess later,” he said. “Pointless to make that decision now without proper time to give him best chance. Nothing further today.”The 38-year-old Woods under-went back surgery in March,

ruling him out of action until the Congressional on June 26.He missed the cut by four shots in that event but reported no problems with his back after playing all four rounds of the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool last month.

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buf-fon has compared the approach of new coach Massimiliano Allegri to former boss Carlo Ancelotti. The 46-year-old took over from Antonio Conte in the summer and the veteran goalkeeper has

praised the ex-Milan boss for his consensual manner with players. “There is no formula that guarantees victory, otherwise it would have been patented. “There is the sergeant like Louis van Gaal and then there’s

those like Carlo Ancelotti, who look for direct contact, and they both know how to achieve success. “I was pleased with both approaches because I received an education that helped me to respect authority.

Arsene Wenger insists Olivier Giroud will be back to his best in time for the start of the Premier League season after a sluggish show against Monaco on Sunday. The France international returned late to pre-season training after featuring for his country at the World Cup in Brazil. Giroud played the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to the Ligue 1 runners-up in the Emirates Cup and appeared to be lacking in fitness. But Wenger, whose side contest the Community Shield with Manchester City on Sunday, is not worried about the 27-year-old.

“He had only three weeks rest…. it was not an eternity and he had to come back quickly,” Wenger said. “But sometimes when you come back late you want to work hard and in a game you are not as sharp. “He’s not put weight on, he’s not out of shape, he’s worked very hard this week and not recovered from the work he has done,” Wenger said. Giroud insists he will be well prepared for the clash with City after another week of intensive training. “It was really hard for me physically and I didn’t feel really well in the game,” he said.

Manchester City are confident they have not broken UEFA Fi-nancial Fair Play regulations by taking Frank Lampard on loan. The 36-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract with MLS side New York City — one of Manchester City’s sister clubs. But the US side do not enter the league until next March so Lampard will play for the Pre-mier League champions until January.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger raised doubts at the weekend over whether Lam-pard’s loan — given the club he is contracted to — adheres to the FFP rules that bar clubs from spending more than they earn. City failed UEFA’s FFP tests last season and must include five home-grown players in a restricted 21-man Champi-

ons League squad, including Lampard. But City, who are close to break-ing even this year, are steadfast in the belief that they have not broken UEFA’s regulations in their move for Lampard.UEFA rules state that Lampard’s loan move falls within the FFP guidelines provided City pay the former Chelsea midfielder’s wages, which they insist they will. Although City, New York City, Melbourne City and are all owned by holding company City Football Group — who also own shares in Yokohama Marinos — they are run as stand-alone businesses.City believe the relationships with sister clubs are no different from feeder club arrangements — for example Chelsea’s agree-ment with Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem.

The four Ethiopian runners who disappeared from the IAAF Junior World Cham-pionships camp in Eugene last weekend defected from their home country to avoid returning to widespread civil unrest there, police

confirmed in a report released on Friday. The report, provided by police in Federal Way, Washington, describes an interview with Zeyituna Mohammed, an 18-year-old woman runner on the

Ethiopian national team. She told police that she and the other athletes decided to stay in the US because they were too afraid to return to Ethiopia. The report confirms for the first time what many

close to the case, includ-ing the team’s coaches, had suspected — that the athletes’ disappearance was part of a plan to defect from Ethiopia. Mohammed told authorities she may seek asylum in the

US, but she is not certain of her plans. It remains unclear whether the other three athletes, whom police found in Beaverton earlier this week, are planning to do so.

Football Kenyan Federation on Tuesday appointed Bobby William-son as new head coach of Harambee Stars on a two-year contract. The former Uganda Cranes coach said the opportunity to manage a national team was to appealing to turn down. The Scot will replace Belgian Adel Amrouche, who was sacked earlier this week after Kenya failed to qual-

ify for Africa Cup of Nations 2015 group stages. Williamson will be assisted by former Kenya defender and captain Musa Otieno and another ex international Simeon Mulama taking over as team manager in a new look techni-cal bench. “I will strive hard with my team to deliver results for Kenya.  I had an awesome time with Gor Mahia,

but it’s time to take another huge challenge,”he said. “Its never the same managing a national team compared to club football, time to get down to work,” said the coach. FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya said Williamson is a big character there-fore settling on him was not a very tough decision. “We needed a coach who un-

derstands our game and Bobby Williamson is that kind of a coach,” he said. “He (Williamson) has been around for some time now having been at the helm of Gor and we hope with our support, he will be able to bring required results. “We held fruitful discussions with his club Gor Mahia and we want him to start work immediately after

he returns from Cecafa Kagame Cup where the league champions will represent Kenya.” Williamson has knowledge of African football having previously been in charge of Cranes, whom he joined in 2008.He replaced Zdravko Logarusic at Gor Mahia last July and won the Kenyan Premier League title at the first attempt.
