FRIEND WINS 2014 KELLIE THOMPSON SHILEY AWARD

u Senior attacker Abbey Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) is the 2014 winner of the Kellie Thompson Shiley Award, given annually by the UNC women’s lacrosse program to the player who “who excels in the classroom and on the field, displays outstanding leadership at all times, sets a positive example for younger players and has a true passion for the game of lacrosse.”

u The award is named for former Tar Heel All-America Kellie Thompson, who died unexpectedly in 2012 due to complications from childbirth.

u All of the above are traits Thompson displayed. Kara Cannizzaro was the inaugural recipient in 2013. Christine McPike, Porter Wilkinson and Lindsay Stone, who graduated from UNC with Thompson in 2002, helped establish the award criteria to honor their former classmate.

PHENOMENAL FRESHMAN CLASSu Carolina’s 2014 freshman class entered

the season as the top-ranked group in the country by Inside Lacrosse and other national media outlets, and the Tar Heel group has lived up to its billing.

u Four of Carolina’s top seven scorers are freshmen, and Maggie Bill, Molly Hendrick and Sydney Holman all have been fixtures in the starting lineup this season for a veteran-laden Tar Heel team.

u Holman is second on the squad in scoring with 61 points on 34 goals and a team-high 27 assists.

u Maggie Bill is fifth on the team with 34 points (27 goals, seven assists) and Hendrick is seventh with 31 points (25 goals, six assists) while also serving as a top weapon on the draw.

u Carly Reed has been one of the Tar Heels’ top weapons off the bench, ranking sixth on the team with 33 points on 32 goals and one assist.

u The freshmen have taken advantage of playing time in the midfield created by injuries to senior Brittney Coppa (returning All-America starter; knee), sophomore Sammy Jo Tracy (scored game-winning goal in 2013 NCAA title game; foot) and juniors Morgan Rubin and Kelly Devlin, both of whom were top reserves in 2013 sidelined by knee injuires in 2014.

u That quartet of top midfield returners has combined for four games played this season, all byRubin.

15-GAME WINNING STREAKu Carolina won 15 games in a row prior to

INJURY UPDATESu In addition to the loss of senior All-

America midfielder Brittney Coppa and 2014 ACC Co-Freshman of the Year attacker Sydney Holman to ACL tears for the season, the Tar Heels have been bitten by the injury bug this season.

u Junior Morgan Rubin has an ACL injury and has been limited to just four games this season.

u Sophomore Sammy Jo Tracy has a foot injury and has not played this season.

u Junior Kelly Devlin tore her ACL in the fall and will miss the 2014 season.

TOP-RATED FRESHMAN CLASSu Inside Lacrosse named the Tar Heel

HANSON EARNS ANOTHER ACADEMIC HONOR

u UNC honored outstanding student-athletes on May 1 at its first annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Luncheon. A group of about 200 students, faculty, coaches and staff members gathered at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on campus for the event.

u The highlight of the luncheon was the recognition of the Top Ten Scholar-Athletes, the five male and five female graduating seniors with the highest cumulative grade point averages.

u Women’s lacrosse senior Paige Hanson, who won the NCAA Elite 89 Award for women’s lacrosse last year, was one of the five top female graduating seniors.

u After receiving a trophy, each honoree spoke for a few minutes about his or her time at UNC, and many gave advice to the younger student-athletes in attendance.

SERVICE AWARD FOR ZOE SKINNERu Senior defender Zoe Skinner was one of

six UNC student-athletes to receive a ACC Top Six for Service award in late April.

u The annual awards are given at each ACC school to those who have distinguished themselves in the area of community service.

u Skinner won the award for the second year in a row. A political science major from Baltimore, Md., she is extremely active in community outreach throughout the year and this year initiated a pen pal project in which UNC student-athletes correspond with fourth graders from a local elementary school.

u Skinner also won the 2013 Yeardley Love Unsung Hero Award for her community service and leadership efforts.

jenny LEVYHEAD COACH19th Season

Long one of the most accomplished active head coaches in NCAA women’s lacrosse, Jenny Levy assured

her place in the sport’s history books by leading the Tar Heels to the 2013 NCAA championship.

The sixth-winningest coach in NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse history and the fourth-winningest active coach in the nation entering the 2014 season, Levy has led the Tar Heels to seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament semifinals, including four in the last five years.

In 2013, Carolina beat defending national champion Northwestern 11-4 in an NCAA semi-final in Villanova, Pa., then bested top-ranked Maryland 13-12 in three overtimes for the title in one of the most thrilling games in the sport’s history. UNC finished the year 18-3, setting a program record for wins in a season. She earned national-coach-of-the-year honors from Inside Lacrosse, the IWLCA and Lacrosse Magazine.

Levy is the fourth coach in women’s lacrosse history to win an NCAA championship as a play-er (with Virginia in 1991) and as a head coach.

In 2013, the Tar Heels finished No. 1 in the nation on the field, winning the NCAA title. Paige Hanson put Carolina at the top in the classroom when she won the NCAA’s Elite 89 Award for having the best grade point average of any player at the 2013 NCAA semifinals. Zoe Skinner won the Yeardley Love Unsung Hero Award for her prolific community service efforts. And Levy’s staff topped off the story-book year by brining in the nation’s top-ranked class of incoming freshmen for the 2014 season.

Former UNC players Kristen Carr, Amber Falcone and Jenn Russell won gold medals with

the U.S. National Team at the 2013 World Cup. Levy entered the season having posted a record of 242-95 in 18 seasons as the

Carolina head coach, including a 81-21 mark in the last five seasons. Her Tar Heel program won 200 games in fewer seasons than any school in Atlantic Coast Conference history.

“Jenny is the reason our team is so close, talking to us whenever we need, bring-ing her kids to practice, and pushing us as a team; she treats us more like family THE JENNY LEVY ERA AT CAROLINA

than players,” says 2013 Honda Award winner Kara Cannizzaro. The only head coach in UNC women’s lacrosse history and among the col-

legiate game’s most noted figures, Levy built the Tar Heel program from scratch. Levy has guided Carolina to 16 NCAA Tournament bids, seven NCAA

Tournament semifinal appearances, an Atlantic Coast Conference title and the 2013 NCAA title in her 19 seasons. She has been a mainstay on various NCAA, IWLCA and US Lacrosse national committees.

An outstanding women’s lacrosse player at the University of Virginia from 1988-92 and an assistant field hockey and assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Georgetown University from 1993-94, Levy was named as Carolina’s first-ever head women’s lacrosse coach in October 1994.

She is a 1992 graduate of the University of Virginia with a BA in rhetoric and communications and was a member of the U.S. National Team in 1992-93 and again in 1995. Levy (then known as Jenny Slingluff) played at UVa from 1988-1992. She led the Cavaliers to the 1991 NCAA championship, scoring three goals in the title game and five in the semifinal, leading to her selection as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Attacker.

A two-time first-team All-America, Levy was named the 1992 NCAA Attacker of the Year. In 2002, she was named one of the top 50 players in ACC history.

She married Dan Levy of Baltimore, Md., in June 1998. Dan is a 1993 UNC graduate who played lacrosse at Carolina for four years, starring on the 1991 NCAA championship team. The couple has three children - Ryan (born in Jan. 2002), Alec (born in Sept. 2003) and Kathryn (born in July 2006).
