Game Environment Statement

The NCAA, GLIAC, its member institu-

tions and our student-athletes support

good sportsmanship.

We see our athletic venues as

extensions of the classroom

environment where, among other

lessons, we teach and learn about the

importance of dignity and

respect for others.

Your presence at this competition is

valued by the student-athletes, coaches

and administration. It is important that

all participants, including spectators and

officials, have a great experience while

attending our athletic events.

Our student-athletes ask for

enthusiastic support for your respective

team. Cheering and encouraging good

performance and effort are what they

expect to see.

Therefore, we ask that you refrain from

using derogatory or abusive language

actions or gestures toward student-ath-

letes, coaches, officials and fans as you

cheer on your team. Failure to behave

in a respectful manner may result in

removal from the event.

With your help, we can make this an

event everyone can enjoy.

Thank you.

2014 SEaSon prEVIEw With the loss of just one senior to graduation, Head Coach Marcella Vanland-ingham is looking for depth and experience to be a big part of the 2014 softball campaign. Vanlandingham, entering her 19th year, is also the program’s all-time winningest coach, with 539 victories. Last year’s squad finished 23-28-1 overall and 17-9 in conference action. High-lights included a two-game sweep over Tiffin for the first time in program history, a thrilling 18-17 comeback win over Concordia University (Mich.), and coach Vanlandingham’s first ever career tie against Concordia in the second half of the double-header. “I am really excited about this season,” said Vanlandingham. “We have one of the best and strongest freshman class I have had in a while, and depth we haven’t seen in the past couple of seasons. We have a lot of players who are interchange-able in the field and that is really exciting to see.” Infield The Panther infield returns three starters from last season. Senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) will occupy one half of the middle infield at shortstop. Jividen earned GLIAC Second Team honors and was selected as the conference player of the week in March. She led the team in batting aver-age (.348), doubles (12), and stolen bases with 11. The senior was second on the team with 20 RBI and second with a slugging percentage of .481. In the field, she committed just 13 errors. Junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) will make the transition from first base to third this season. She earned GLIAC Honorable Mention honors and started in 51 games. She split her time between first and third base where she posted a .977 fielding percentage. She was second on the team with a batting average of .319 and had team-highs 31 RBI, seven homeruns, and a .553 slugging percentage. She ended the season with eight doubles and two triples. Returning to the right side of the infield is sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio). Albanese started in every game at second base in her freshman campaign where she hit two homeruns, six doubles and batted in 15 RBI. She posted a batting average of .264 and a fielding percentage of .934. For the 2014 campaign, Albanese will see a majority of the season at first base. Sophomore’s Taylor Mason (Belpre, Ohio) and Alexis Swisher (Cincinnati, Ohio) also return to the Panther infield and are expected to compete during the 2014 campaign. “There are a lot of changes this year in our infield,” said Vanlandingham. “The coaching staff decided on the changes so we could have the oppor-tunity to have the best nine hitters in our lineup play. At the anchor of our infield is Jividen. She knows the game and is a great communicator to the rest of the team.”

outfield The duo of junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) and sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio) make up two-thirds of the returning outfield for the Panthers.

Seeds saw some action at third, but played the majority of her games in left field. Seeds hit .240 in 146 plate appearances. She batted in 12 runners from the leadoff spot, and totaled 10 doubles last season. She ended the 2013 campaign with 70 putouts and 11 assists while committing just four errors. Weber played in 49 games in center field where she will be expected to play again. Weber was a GLIAC Honorable Mention selection a year ago, leading all Panther freshman with a .269 batting average. She batted in 18 RBI and

recorded 15 walks. Defensively, Weber committed no errors while totaling 61 putouts and two assists. Sophomores Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) and Julia Suyak (Trenton, Mich.), and Devan Audette (Bronson, Mich.) are expected to compete for ODU’s right field spot this season. “With the return of Seeds and Lizzy, I feel we have a very strong outfield,” noted Vanlandingham. “Seeds has improved since last spring in her ability to chase down balls in the gap and Lizzy has great instincts in center. Montana and Julia, along with Devan are right now in a three person race to claim the third spot in our outfield.” Mound Talk

Juniors Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) and Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) return as the Panthers top two pitchers. Stanzel finished with a record of 15-16 and an earned run average of 2.62 in 38 appearances with 30 starts. She posted 27 complete games with four shutouts while striking out 87 batters. Stanzel’s 15 wins tied her for fifth in the GLIAC and was second in the conference in shutouts. She earned GLIAC Second Team honors and was also named GLIAC Pitcher of the Week. Fishel ended last season with an 8-12 record and a 4.02 ERA. She had 37 strikeouts and pitched 14 complete games, including two shutouts. “As of right now, Rachael is our number one pitcher,” marked Vanland-ingham. “She has great movement on her pitches, knows how to stay composed and handle herself in tough situations. Brandis is also a tough competitor who knows how to get batters out. We are excited to see her pitch this spring.”

Behind the Dish

Junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) will see the majority of time behind home plate this season. The junior earned GLIAC Second Team honors while starting in every game for the Panthers. She ranked second on the team in doubles with 11 and batted in 16 RBI, while splitting time in the first two spots in the lineup. Defensively, Cribari played both third and catcher last season. Junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio), who split time last year with Cribari, will once again split her time this season. “We are lucky enough to have two athletes who can be interchangeable behind the plate and can call a great game,” said Vanlandingham. “We are excited to see what they can do this spring on both sides of the ball.”

newcomers

Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) Christine Scholle (Centerville, Ohio) and Sommer Mark (DeLand, Fla.) will be competing for playing time in the infield this season. Hinton was a three year scholar athlete at Newcomerstown High School. In 2010, she was selected to the Eastern District Second Team and the Inter Valley Conference Honorable Mention Team. In 2011, she was First Team All-Ohio Division Four, First Team Inter Valley Conference, First Team Eastern District and in 2012, she was selected to the Inter Valley Conference and Eastern District First Team and was selected to the All-Ohio Division III Second Team. “Allie is currently the front runner to start at second base,” said Vanland-ingham. “She had a really great fall season and worked nicely alongside Jividen.”

2014 SEaSon prEVIEwScholle was selected to the “All-Ohio” All-Star Underclassman Team and in 2012 she was selected from 1400 student-athletes to attend the Greater Western Ohio Conference Student Leadership Conference. Her softball ac-colades include earning GWOC First Team honors, and were selected to the Dayton All-Metro Second Team as well as the All-Ohio Third Team. In 2012, she shattered the single-season hitting record for the Elks. “Scholle is going to compete strongly against Hinton for a spot in the infield,” noted Vanlandingham. “She is smart and knows the game so we are excited to see what she can bring at this level.” Mark was a three-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs as well as being a scholar athlete. “Summer can really hit the ball, and hard,” Vanlandingham said. “We are looking to use her as a designated hitter and in the field.” Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) and Brooke Myers (Orlando, Fla.) will see time as starting pitchers. Murdoch was named King High School’s most valuable player in 2011, 2012, and 2013. She was selected to the All-Conference First Team in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and was voted as the Athlete of the Year in 2012. “Casey is a double threat in that she can pitch and hit the ball,” said Van-landingham. “She has the ability to strike batters out with a rise ball or with her off speed pitches. This level will be an adjustment, but we are looking forward to what she can bring.”

Myers played for the East River Falcons where she was an All-Metro Pitcher of the Yea in both 2011 and 2012. “We want to use Brooke as a relief pitcher this year,” said Vanlandingham. “She has great movement and is a true lefty, which is exciting. She can also hit the ball, so we have the option to use her as a DH.” Rounding out the freshman class is Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisc.). Wal-lace was a three-year varsity letterwinner for the Wildcats and was selected to the All-Conference Second and Honorable Mention Teams. “Kelly’s skill set is great, she is a strong hitter and is good behind the plate,” said Vanlandingham. “We want to see her adjust to this level, and can’t wait to see how she grows over the course of the season.”

Schedule

Ohio Dominican opens the 2013 campaign with its annual trip to Huntsville, Alabama for the University of Alabama at Huntsville Ringor Charger Chillout. The Panthers will continue its tour of the South with their spring break trip in Winterhaven, Florida. ODU’s first home game will be on Wednesday, Mar. 26 as the Panthers wel-come North Alabama for a doubleheader at Panther Softball Fields. Conference play will begin the following weekend with trips to Lake Superior State and Northwood. “We play six teams who are currently ranked in the top-25 preseason poll,” said Vanlandingham. “On the first day alone at the Chillout Tournament, we face North Alabama and University Alabama Huntsville. We travel to South-ern Indiana at the end of February for a tournament, which gives us a good look at the competition that is in our region.”

Marcella Vanlandingham, the program’s all-time winningest coach, returns for her 19th season at the helm of the Panthers. Since 1996, Vanlandingham has compiled a career record of 539-424-1 (.559) at ODU, including an impressive conference mark of 245-108 (.694).

Following her arrival at ODU, Vanlandingham quickly turned the softball program into a regional power. Beginning in 2001, she guided the Panthers to a streak of eight consecutive American Mideast Conference titles, includ-ing Region IX titles and NAIA World Series appearances in 2002 and 2005. The Panthers have won 10 or more conference games in 14 seasons under Vanlandingham, including a perfect AMC mark of 14-0 and school record 45 wins in 2005.

Vanlandingham’s players have received numerous honors during her tenure, both on and away from the diamond, including seven NAIA All-Americans, six conference player/pitchers of the year, 36 NFCA All-Great Lakes Region selections, 123 all-conference honorees and 27 NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes. Vanlandingham is a five-time AMC Coach of the Year and in 2005, she and the ODU coaching staff were tabbed the NFCA Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

A 1992 graduate of Asbury College (Ky.), Vanlandingham received a degree in physical education. Upon completing her Master’s degree in Sports Admin-istration from Eastern Kentucky University in 1994, Vanlandingham returned to her alma mater to teach. During her one year at Asbury, she was also the assistant softball and volleyball coach, before coming to Ohio Dominican in the fall of 1995.

A native of Milton, Florida, Vanlandingham served as the AMC softball chair seven times during her 15-year tenure in the conference and was the NAIA Region IX softball from 2007 to 2009. Away from her coaching responsibili-ties, Vanlandingham also helped initiate the Sport Management undergraduate curriculum at Ohio Dominican.

MarCElla VanlanDInGhaM

Amanda Ritzler, a 2005 Calvert High School graduate, went to Ohio Domini-can University, where she played both basketball and softball. She was a four year middle infield starter on the Panther softball team and led them to three American Midwest Conference (AMC) South Division Conference titles. She is currently tied for two hitting records at Ohio Dominican, most hits in a game with four and most doubles in a game with three.

Ritzler finished her senior season leading the team with a .450 batting average and finished with 59 hits, 12 doubles and 28 RBI. Ritzler captured several honors and awards her senior year including AMC First Team, NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete, and Female Athlete of the Year. Amanda also led the women’s basketball team to back-to-back AMC Tournament titles and National Tournament appearances in the 2007-2008 & 2008-2009 seasons. Ritzler earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management at Ohio Dominican and a Master’s in Business Administration from Tiffin University.

OHIODOMINICANPANTHERS.COM

Ohio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 majors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a student-centered approach, with a commit-ment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction.

Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fields and in residence halls, in re-hearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instructors.

ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expectations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of 50 undergraduate major areas of study including those in the arts, sciences, and professions.

Led by a talented faculty dedicated to excellence in teaching and committed to helping students learn, ODU’s student engagement model focuses on serving the whole student through personal attention and assistance in collaboration with the institution’s Divi-sion of Student Development. Ohio Dominican is fully accredited and offers academic programs at the baccalaureate and masters degree levels through five divisions: Arts and Letters; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Mathematics, Computer and Natural Sciences; Business; and Education.

The University is significantly expanding the level of on-campus student extracurricular activities and improving residential life. At the same time, Ohio Dominican has expanded

its extracurricular offerings, providing a greater number of on-campus activities for both residential and commuter students. A central focus has been the addition of a new Student Center and expansion of athletic programs, which attract student athletes and non athletes alike, and foster alumni participation.

Student organizations and activities at ODU offer events and activities that relate to areas of academic interest, student government, artistic performance, multicultural identity, media, athletic, social, honorary, religious and service organizations. Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students.

Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffi n Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall.

In 2011 the students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrated the University’s Centennial anniversary. The Centennial theme, A Century of Transform-ing Lives, reflected on ODU’s Dominican heritage, history and tradition. This celebra-tion encouraged the University community to reflect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Dominican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends.

Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, com-mitted to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. Ohio Dominican is known for its student-centered and innovative approaches to teaching and learning; its commitment to excellence in academic and co-curricular programs; its commitment to service and community responsibility; its outstanding campus facilities and resources; its global outreach in response to educational needs; and its reputation for distinction in values-based higher education.

panther field football, Men’s and Women’s soccer

Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

alumni hall Men’s and Women’s Basketball, volleyball

Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One full-length bas-ketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court.

After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spa-cious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

panther Courts Men’s and Women’s tennis

Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently re-surfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.
