T he Texas Rangers were proud to host the 2014 Major League Baseball RBI World Series August 5-17 in North Texas. The 2014 RBI World Series featured young men

and women competing on baseball and softball teams from 19 cities in the United States, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Tournament and playoff games of the RBI World Series were played on fields at Grapevine’s Oak Grove Complex and Grapevine High School, Colleyville Heritage High School, and Bob Jones Park in Southlake. The baseball championship games were played on Monday, August 11 at Globe Life Park with the Miami Marlins RBI defeating Detroit Arsenal for the Juniors Championship and Jackie Robinson Jersey City RBI beating the Angels RBI for the Seniors Championship. The softball championship game was played at Texas Woman’s University in Denton and the Dominican Republic RBI team from Santo Domingo was victorious against the Houston Astros RBI team.

The entire event began with a special Opening Luncheon featuring Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig in his final visit to North Texas before his retirement. In addition to the games, the participants spent an afternoon at the North Texas Food Bank helping prepare thousands of meals, enjoyed a Texas Rangers baseball game, and heard from former Rangers players including Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, Darren Oliver, Mark McLemore, and Jim Sundberg. The RBI World Series is the international championship tournament of the RBI program, the Major League Baseball youth initiative designed to provide young people from underserved and diverse communities the opportunity to play baseball and softball. A tip of the cap to the cities of Grapevine and Southlake and the Gaylord Texan for serving as wonderful hosts to all of the RBI participants and giving the kids and their families a lifetime of memories.

“RBI TAUGHT ME THAT WHEREVER YOU COME FROM,

AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A DREAM AND A GOAL YOU

CAN ACHIEVE IT. THEY TREAT YOU LIKE PROFESSIONAL

PLAYERS IN A WAY. YOU KNOW, IT’S A GREAT FEELING

BEING ON YOUR OWN, ACTING LIKE A PROFESSIONAL,

GETTING TO PLAY ON THESE AMAZING FIELDS IN TEXAS.”

— MARK VENICE, MVP OF THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
