At Thornleigh Golf Centre in New South Wales, the use of hot dip galvanizing (HDG) has enabled the combination of modern design and a durable, cost-effective product with proven performance.

Compared to any other protective coating for steel, hot dip galvanizing is unmatched in its superior corrosion resistance, strong and tough coating, proven performance, and lifetime cost benefits.

It also has very high sustainability credentials, with zinc and steel being 100% recyclable, and is immune from UV damage. Hot dip galvanized steel contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) and does not emit ozone depleting gases, but its strength is its length of protection – with many examples where HDG steel has been in operation for over 70 years.

Hot Dip Galvanizing – First and last line of defenceFor further examples of the durability of hot dip galvanizing please visit www.gaa.com.au or scan the QR code.

Master Builders National Excellence Awards recognise the finest from the building and con-struction industry and 2014 is no exception with a showcase of the highest quality achieved by the industry’s best and brightest.

Winners of Australia’s most prestigious building industry and construction awards are recog-nised for projects that are testament to their commitment to excellence.

The National Excellence Awards are drawn from the winners of eight preceding state and territory awards making national winners the best of the best who set the benchmark for the industry nationwide.

Winning projects exemplify inspiration and adherence to the highest standards, bringing to life the vision of clients.

They have conquered challenging locations and conditions, achieved bold and rigorous sus-tainability and workplace safety targets, built homes for people of all abilities and families of all shapes and sizes and provided lifestyle and liveable housing to fulfil the diverse housing needs of everyday Australians.

This year’s winning projects and their fellow national finalists prove that the technical exper-tise and innovation of Master Builders can overcome the seemingly impossible.

Grand visions were also achieved in our built environment with public and private buildings creating more liveable and connected communities.

The opportunity to construct something special that will compel admiration and appreciation from generations to come is a powerful motivator of those who enter Master Builders’ National Excellence Awards.

It is therefore very pleasing to see so many young people appearing in the 2014 awards, not only in the National Apprentice of the Year and National Young Builder of the Year, but also those who excelled in their contributions to award winning teams that produced other nationally significant projects.

They can draw not only on the inspiration of outstanding building and construction projects but on the wealth of knowledge of the national judges who spent countless hours selecting winners from the 5000 best projects built by Master Builders from around Australia whose excellence underpins the calibre of the National Excellence Awards.

The quality of this year’s finalists cannot fail to inspire confidence for our clients that Master Builders deliver the highest quality product for the best value.

Project Fiona Stanley Hospital Project

The 783-bed Fiona Stanley Hospital is Brookfi eld Multiplex’s biggest design and construct project, and the largest building infrastructure project ever undertaken for the Western Australian Government. The hospital’s seven buildings and two decked car parks cover a 32 hectare site. The main hospital is a complex design comprising a service tunnel, three podium levels, fi ve ward levels, associated plant-rooms and a helicopter landing pad on level

nine. The company’s achievement in meeting the challenges presented by the sheer size and complexity of this project is outstanding.

BUILDING HEALTHY PARTNERSHIPSBrookfield Multiplex is built on 50+ years construction experience, coupled with a drive to build healthy partnerships. We are acutely sensitive to the many complexities inherent in health delivery and our expertise is founded on a genuine motivation to determine user needs and ensure precise interpretation of these needs into functional built solutions.

The diversity of our delivery capability in the healthcare sector is well-represented by two award nominations in the 2014 Master Builders Australia National Housing and Construction Awards: Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre (above) and the new Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth (below).

Project Monash University New Horizons Building 82, Clayton

The scope of works for the New Horizons building included an extensive use of structural steel to the entire perimeter of the building. The structural steel members were installed within tight tolerances to ensure accurate bracket installation for the façade boxes. The façade boxes were all manufactured off-site, primarily in two halves for transportation because some were up to 22 metres long. Attached to the top and bottom of the boxes were the sub-framing for the aluminium window system. The Kalzip cladding works to roofing and soffit had to be carried out on site due to

the complex geometry of the building.

Project Melton Library & Learning Hub

Part of ADCO’s scope for this project was to undertake research and development on all building materials to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Green Building Council materials rating tools. Significant time and resources were allocated to this task and the result is that the Melton Library and Learning Hub is only the second project to be awarded a 5 Star Green Design rating under the new rating system. A 48,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank captures all the rainwater from the building’s roof. Highly efficient fixtures and fittings, and the use of recycled

water ensure that reliance on the town’s main water is as low as possible.

Project Graythwaite Estate Stage 1 Works

Originally built in 1833 and one of the oldest remaining structures in North Sydney, this heritage-listed estate has been fully restored for the use of Sydney Church of England Grammar School. In a derelict state prior to commencement of works, the project included demolition of non-historic building elements, the restoration and adaption of three buildings, landscaping, civil and external works including palisade fencing, sandstone walls,

formal gardens and pavements. Meticulously restored to its former glory, the future of this significant historic building has now been assured.

Fairbrother Pty LtdTasmania

Project St Patrick’s College

The project involved the construction of a new two storey teaching centre. The upper level comprises six individual class teaching spaces linked by glazed acoustic operable walls specifically designed to open into a single space. A key challenge involved working within the confines of a fully operational school campus. Site security and safety including traffic management were a priority particularly around school start and finish times.

A high level of skill was required to frame the architecturally designed raking and angled external walls.

Project Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa

The project primarily involved the refurbishment of 167 hotel rooms including suites and villas. It also included the refurbishment of a restaurant and bar, extensive façade works and revitalisation of the hotel entrance. The old bar and restaurant were stripped back internally and tastefully refurbished into celebrity chef Peta Kuravita’s Noosa Beach House restaurant and bar. The challenge of moving materials into and out of a fully functioning hotel

whilst achieving minimal impact on guest enjoyment and hotel operations was overcome by extensive planning.

Aptly named SPLASH by the public, the aquatic centre consists of a new eight lane 25 metre indoor pool, a learn to swim warm water exercise pool and a leisure water centre with play features. The main pool hall is supported on 16 large pre-cast columns with steel framed curved triangular trusses spanning 26 metres between the columns. The compound curves and large spans created challenges that needed innovative solutions and resourceful

sub-contractors, all of which contributed to the outstanding success of the project.

Project Garangula Gallery

The Gallery is sited to follow the natural topography of the rural landscape. The building is both beautiful and functional in its scale and form. The stone for the extensive stone walls was excavated on site, as was the earth used in the rammed earth walls. Substantial quantities of recycled timbers from the old Hornibrook bridge in Queensland feature throughout the building. Reworking of the second hand timbers was an arduous task which required patience and technique to achieve the required effect. Extensive use of Corten steel on the external elevations required careful preparation to produce

a consistent patina. The completed project is highly detailed and the workmanship is outstanding.

The project commenced with demolition of the pre-existing warehouses. The new building comprises seven levels including a car park, a teaching floor, office accommodation, a biomedical research facility and an animal and plant level totalling 9,250 square metres of floor space. The most striking feature is the façade. A concrete lattice shading frame across the building with a contour form provides secondary sun shading based on

Hobart’s topography. Mountain peaks and water formations have been mapped using a combination of steel and colour glazing.

Project SA Health and Medical Research Institute

The use of ‘Building Information Modeling’ and fully integrated solutions solved many of the problems associated with the complexity of this project. The building is visually spectacular from multiple perspectives. The complexity of the geometric shape in the highly curved areas is increased by the large spans of the atrium voids. The design of the innovative and sophisticated Diagrid façade was inspired by the ‘skin of a pine cone’. The structure

spans approximately 30,000 square metres with three levels below ground and six levels above.

Bulk Water AllianceAustralian Capital TerritoryProject Cotter Dam Project

The Cotter Dam project is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Canberra’s history. The enlarged dam has increased Canberra’s water storage capacity by 35%. The new dam was constructed downstream of the original Cotter Dam and at 87 metres high is the tallest roller compacted concrete dam in Australia. Excavation of the foundations for its abutments required an extensive operation on extremely steep slopes at heights up to 110 meters. Construction of the dam required a high level of planning and implementation of complex logistics. The high-risk nature of the project

meant safety was a major consideration and the subject of significant management effort.

Project Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club

The project involved the demolition of an existing dilapidated club building and the construction of a new facility. It is the culmination of extensive consultation between council, state and federal governments, the Aboriginal Land Council and the local Woromi community to achieve a modern surf life-saving club which is sympathetic to the existing environment. The first of the two buildings contains a function room, bar, equipment store, amenities, first aid room, patrol tower and observation deck. The second is the community building containing a café, commercial kitchen and a

caretaker’s residence. The high level finishes include acoustic timber ceilings and polished concrete floors.

Project Marryatville Learning Centre

This project included a new two storey state of the art facility comprising general learning areas and science laboratories, as well as extensions to the gymnasium and the upgrade of the entrance and car park. The main structure is predominantly constructed of precast walls with suspended concrete floors. Externally the building features ‘port holed’ blade walls to north and south elevations. Internally, the high quality timber veneered wall and ceiling

finishes, along with wall fabrics and modern furnishings provide a relaxing environment for the students.

Project Bond University Abedian School of Architecture

Stretching long and lofty, with no dominant façade, the building is a rich hybrid of simple elements. Giant glass windows extend from floor to ceiling, flooding the interior with light. Panes of wood, glass and concrete dominate the interior. All aspects of this 2500 square metre building were constructed on site, with due care taken to avoid interrupting the university’s day-to-day operations. The complex formed concrete scoop structures, bespoke window and glazing systems are Australian construction firsts. Custom designed steel connection plates were required for each connection to the

‘scoops’ to ensure a seamless integration with the curved elements.

CONDABRI AND REEDY CREEK WATER TREATMENT PLANTS: Steel Fabrications Australia Pty Ltd undertook these projects with Leighton Contractors Pty Limited.

Our scope was inclusive of in-house shop drawings for structural steel through to the complete installation of all Structural steel, cladding, rainwater products, operable roller shutters and personnel doors.  The two structures comprised in excess of 52,000 individual items of steel fabricated into approximately 12,700 completed assemblies for installation – with a nil error rate.

To minimise the high risk activity of working at heights the roof steel and associated cladding were pre-assembled into panels at ground level  (approx. 30m x 21.5m) and were installed directly onto the columns in a single lift utilising a 550 Tonne crane.  This innovative method of installation is re ective of SFA’s Zero Harm Policy commitment and our clients’ commitment to excellence in safety.

THIS PROJECT REQUIRED IN EXCESS OF 45,000 HOURS FOR SFA WITH A NIL LOST TIME INJURIES.

Leighton Contractors Pty Limited proved to be a like-minded client, with a high regard for safety, innovation and quality of works.  This synergy contributed substantially to the outstanding success of the two projects.

Please visit our website www.steelfabau.com.au to nd out more, including our innovative method of installation.

Our recent delivery of the state-of-the-art Q Catering base for Qantas at Brisbane Airport has already won local and state award recognition in the Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards 2014 in an industrial construction category. It is nominated for a national award.

The next-generation catering plant is a temperature-controlled, semi-automated facility with airside and

landside operations. It enables Qantas to reduce the time taken to assemble catering requirements for a flight, meaning food and equipment are prepared closer to departure times, leading to a fresher product for travellers.

Stramit FarLap® Roof Lap Joint System

® Trade marks of Stramit Corporation Pty Limited ABN 57 005 010 195. Trading as Stramit Building Products. A member of the Fletcher Building Group. COLORBOND® is a registered trade mark of BlueScope Steel Limited. 31372

This innovative system from Stramit Building Products allows deck roofs to be designed to any length without stepped joints or on-site roll-forming.

With the Stramit FarLap® jointing system, long roof runs can be broken into shorter sheet lengths, with no need for structural modifications. The Stramit FarLap® joint provides a strong, weather resisting joint between lapped sheets of Stramit Speed Deck Ultra® concealed fixed decking.

Shorter sheets means safer work practices, less thermal expansion and contraction, plus lower transport costs and smaller cranes.

For further information contact your local Stramit office.

SUPPLIERS OF ALL TYPES OF BUILDING PRODUCTS

ATS Timber are suppliers of all types of building products. ATS Timber offers a comprehensive range of timber and building products.

ATS Timber is one of Sydney’s largest importers and distributors of timber, engineered wood products and building materials. We offer quality products at competitive prices. This includes: timber for all carpentry applications, formwork material, external decking, timber flooring, cladding, internal lining boards and an extensive range of Tools and Builder’s Hardware.

We are conveniently located in the geographic centre of Sydney and have our own fleet of delivery trucks.

ATS Timber is the largest importer of West Coast Oregon, commonly known as Douglas Fir. This timber is grown in abundance in the West Coast of the United States and Canada. An outstanding building material, it is well known for its strength and durability for Wall and Roof Framing. It is also widely used in the formwork market with green F7 grade. ATS Timber has an exclusive supply of this product, which includes Kiln Dried F8 Oregon. F8 Oregon is well known for its strength and durability and consistency in sizes with metric gauge sizes. It is light in weight making it easy to work with.

ATS Timber is proud to offer a comprehensive range of Engineered Wood Products which includes:

LP™ SolidStart™ LVLDelivering a greater load carrying capacity than traditional softwood timber, LVL provides consistent dimensions, enhanced durability and reduced shrinkage.

An improvement over solid timber, LVL minimises problems that naturally occur as traditional timber dries, such as twisting, splitting, checking, bowing and warping.

All our LVL has SiteCote as standard, a wax-based coating that helps weather resistance on the job site.

LP™ Solidstart I-JoistsStraighter and more uniform in strength, stiffness and size than traditional timber, I-Joists are lightweight and available in longer lengths and deeper depths as well. This means that even large floors can be created with fewer pieces, helping to reduce installation and material costs.

I-Joists can be cantilevered to accommodate different floor framing details, and are also suitable for roof framing. In fact, they’re ideal for creating popular styles like cathedral ceilings.

LP™ FormworkLP™ SolidStart™ Concrete Form Beams.

High grade E12 with a wax SiteCote on all six sides for increased moisture protection and longer service life. For easier and safer handling they also come with eased (chamfered) edges.

Manufactured from 100% plantation certified natural renewable resources they meet with EWPAA Requirements for EO Emissions class.

Australian Engineering certified as suitable for use in all forms of construction in accordance with the Building Code of Australia.
